Poor Mans Poison
Wednesday
The four-member group plays a
mixture of Folk, Americana,
Country and Rock.
After drummer Dustin Medeiros
was diagnosed with tinnitus, it
became apparent that he would
have to resign, not only from his
band Done For Good, but also from
loud music. After just one album
together, the group would part
ways.
Former Done For Good members
Ryan Hakker and Mike Jacobs
continued working on more
acoustic music, eventually arranging a show at a place called Lush in
Hanford.
It was then that Medeiros shifted
gears, borrowing a stand-up bass
and expecting nothing more than a
one-off show. Then, on the second
day of practice, former Done For
Good guitarist Tommy McCarthy
arrived with a borrowed mandolin.
“After he played that first hook
melody,” says Medeiros, “we knew
we had a band and it was out of our
hands.”
With Ryan Hakker and Mike
Jacobs, Poor Man's Poison was
born. Since then, the group has
accomplished far more than any of
their prior endeavors and in far
less time.
A major accomplishment for the
group was becoming the 2012
National Winner of the Texaco
Country Showdown, the largest
and longest running country
music talent search in the nation.
The recognition as best in the
country came with a check for
$100,000.
Poor Mans Poison will perform
September 11 on the Budweiser
stage and is free with fair admission.
Tower of Power
Thursday
Tower's musical odyssey actually began in 1968 when Emilio
Castillo met Stephen "Doc" Kupka
in July of that year. When Doc
auditioned during a band
rehearsal at Emilio's house,
Emilio's father called him into the
kitchen and offered the following
advice: "Hire that guy, he's got
something."
Doc and his signature baritone
sax sound were now in the band,
and on August 13, 1968, Tower of
Power, as we know them today,
began playing gigs, and soon
became very well known in the
area.
After playing at a Tuesday night
audition at the Fillmore in 1970,
Tower was signed to Bill Graham's
San Francisco records and their
first album, East Bay Grease, was
recorded. All of the compositions
were original tunes written by
Castillo and Kupka.
Their album, “Bump City,” was
recorded on the Warner Brothers
label, and this led to a string of hits
and memorable albums that
include many of the songs that
TOP fans come out in force to hear,
even to this day.
Over the years, the Tower of
Power Horns have recorded with
hundreds of artists as diverse as
Aerosmith, Elton John, Little Feat,
Phish, Santana, Heart, and many
others, forever infusing the radio
airwaves with Tower's musical
DNA.
Since the beginning, Tower of
Power has never stopped touring
and recording. Always in demand,
the band never fails to entertain
and amaze their fans. Tower is
truly blessed to have a dedicated
following that often travels to see
the band, and in many cases fans
will plan their vacation or work
schedule around an appearance of
TOP.
Prestia, Stephen Kupka, and
David Garibaldi are four of the
band's founding members. Their
dedication to the music, their
creative writing, and their original
vision still guides Tower of Power.
In 2009, they went into
Graham's studio and began
carving out what would be their
debut project. Along the way, they
connected with long time friend
and vocalist, Joy Sampson, who
would perform two duets on the
project along with a plethora of
background vocals.
At one point, the duo became a
trio for a short time until Sampson
became pregnant with her fourth
child and opted out of life on the
road. Nonetheless, the project took
on a very distinct sound with the
addition of Sampson's vocals, and
all three decided her vocals would
stay.
Lucky Ned Pepper will be performing Friday, September 13 on
the Budweiser Stage and is free
with fair admission.

TRUE 2 CRUE: Motley
Crue Tribute Band
Saturday
Lucky Ned Pepper
Friday
Rick Russell and Josh Graham,
former members of the
Bakersfield-based country group
Smokin' Armadillos, teamed up to
form one of the hottest new acts in
country music, Lucky Ned Pepper.
In the 13 years Russell spent
fronting the Smokin' Armadillos,
he and acoustic guitarist Josh
Graham took pride in the solid
relationships they built along the
way in Nashville.
With Graham's musical ability to
work behind the recording studio
board, Russell approached his
former bandmate to see if he would
be interested in helping an old
friend out.
In 2005, the two went back into
the studio to begin work on
Russell's solo endeavors. With the
musical fire once again burning
deep down inside both Russell and
Graham, they went forward and
decided to call themselves Lucky
Ned Pepper.

Farm Bureau Membership Has Value!
By: Steve Godlin,
Tulare County Farm Bureau President
As you enjoy this year's Tulare
County Fair, I would like to thank
you for being a member of Tulare
County Farm Bureau, and if you
are not a member, please take a
moment to consider joining our
fine organization.
The Farm Bureau is the oldest
and largest general farming
organization in Tulare County
representing local farm and ranch
families since 1917. Our mission
is to promote and enhance the
viability of Tulare County
agriculture. Farm Bureau's goal is
to speak with a united voice on the
issues that impact agriculture,
work for solutions to the problems
impacting our rural communities
and address the challenges
farmers and ranchers face.
Membership is paid annually to
your local county Farm Bureau,
and can be one of the least
expensive ways you help protect
your business, farm or ranch!
For just a small dues payment
each year, you are provided with a
host of resources, discounted
insurance programs and an array
of agricultural news. Members
receive a monthly TCFB news
publication, weekly Ag Alert®
newspaper for producers, travel
deals, and a network of more than
2,500 members and allies in
agriculture.
Our local team works on a
variety of issues here in the county
and region, as well as work with a
team of dedicated professionals
Steve Godlin, Tulare County Farm Bureau President
based at the California Farm
Bureau and the American Farm
Bureau Federation.
We
continuously work on
regulations, legislation, taxes,
fees, animal and livestock issues,
crop protection, and much, much
more.
Also as part of our outreach, we
also support youth leadership, 4H, FFA, and education programs
in our communities. One of our
partnerships you can see right
here at the fair this week as we
serve lunch to support to the
buyers at the junior livestock
auction on Saturday.
Farm Bureau works to solve
problems, advocate for growers,
and promote education and
outreach to the public about the
importance of agriculture. Your
membership dollars are spent
locally supporting numerous
programs, events, and advocacy
efforts to tell your story and
protect your business from
harmful fees, regulatory impacts,
and over-taxation.
California is a tough place to do
business. It's especially tough to
farm in with today's business
climate and regulatory
compliance requirements very
stringent. Consider joining Farm
Bureau and lending your support
to the work that we do on behalf of
all of agriculture.
As a small minority of
California's population, saving
our farms and ranches from overregulation along with protecting
the heritage of our agricultural
community is very important to
Farm Bureau. We hope you will
help us by becoming a member
today. Call the office at 732-8301
or join online at www.joinfb.org.

Young Farmers and Ranchers Continue Farm to Fork Program
Farm Bureau's Young Farmers
and Ranchers (YF&R) Committee
are looking forward to taking part
in a long time local tradition, the
county fair. YF&R will be out in full
force at the Tulare County Fair this
year with their annual Farm to
Fork project, volunteering at the
Livestock Auction and sponsoring
the buyers lunch.
Farm to Fork, which began in
2010, is a favored philanthropy
event where the YF&R committee
purchases animals at the Junior
Livestock Auction and in turn
donates the meat to local rescue
missions and food banks. The
group works in coordination with
local meat processors and the fair
to get fresh locally grown meat to
needy families in the county.
“Farm to Fork is a great
opportunity for YF&R to support
local youth programs that educate
about agriculture as well as give
back to the community,” says
Dusty Ference, YF&R Committee
Chair. “It's a simple concept and a
great program that reaches out
and affects so many.”
The group plans to dedicate one
animal to a sponsored dinner at
the Visalia Rescue Mission, to
uphold the tradition of the first
Farm to Fork dinner in 2010. But
they also plan to expand their
efforts to reach all of Tulare
County by donating the other
