ROLL OUT — A 15-year-old Bowie girl suffered serious injuries in a wreck Friday afternoon just north of Decatur. Above, medics transport her from
an ambulance to a helicopter to fly her to Cook Children’s in Fort Worth.
2 children injured in rollover
By BRANDON EVANS
Two children sustained serious injuries
in a one-vehicle rollover on U.S. 287 just
north of Decatur near Bono’s Chophouse
and Saloon Friday afternoon.
Shortly after 2, a van driven by Tonya
Sanders, 34, of Bowie drove off the road and
rolled several times.
“She was going northbound and there
was an 18-wheeler in the inside lane that
came into her lane,” said state trooper Russell Reid. “She tried to avoid it. She ended
up in the ditch and rolled several times.”
Her two daughters suffered serious injuries in the crash. Her 15-year-old received
air transport to Cook Children’s Hospital
in Fort Worth. Her 5-year-old was driven to
Wise Regional Health System in Decatur.
The mother was uninjured in the wreck.
She rode in the ambulance with her 5-yearold daughter.
Decatur firefighters used extrication tools
to pry the doors off the van to get to the girl
in the backseat.
MOTHER’S DISTRESS — Wise County medic
Phil Sams consoles Tonya Sanders, 34, of
Bowie after her two daughters were injured
in a wreck.
Wayne Miles, of Dallas, was southbound
in a tractor-trailer when he saw the wreck.
He slammed his brakes and rushed to the
scene.
“It was flipping in the air over and over,”
Miles said. “I was the first one to get there.
I saw the little girl in the back seat with a
lot of blood coming out of her head.”
“Why did this have to happen? Why?”
Sanders said over and over as medics
worked to remove her children from the vehicle.
Wise County medic Phil Sams eventually
calmed her down.
Sanders and her daughters were headed
home to Bowie after a trip to Walmart when
the accident occurred. Canned foods, soda
cans, potatoes, raw drumsticks and other
groceries lay scattered and crushed across
the gravel driveway where the blue van
came to a rest.
Although the extent of injuries are unknown at the time of this report, emergency
responders on scene expect the girls to survive.

For years, Ashley Clifton, 90, of
Decatur did not talk about his service in World War II.
“He never talked about the war
much until about the 50th anniversary,” his daughter, Adrienne
Faulhaber said. “Then we began to
learn more about it. I didn’t know
he was in the Battle of Okinawa
until a few years ago.”
When Clifton began to talk about
his years serving in the Pacific,
he told of playing poker, his liquor
“stores,” the mail buoy and his pet
monkey – the things that kept his
mind off the fear and horror of war.
These are the images that Clifton’s son-in-law, Dewey Faulhaber,
carved into Clifton’s walking stick.
“They’re kind of like story poles,”

STRONG MEMORY — Ashley Clifton says his memory is still intact and that
he can remember traveling in a covered wagon as a 2-year-old. Clifton has
begun sharing his memories of World War II with his children, and his son-inlaw carved a walking stick with images from those memories.
Adrienne said. Her husband has
made several of the walking sticks
for family members, each carved
with images representative of their
owner.
Clifton’s walking stick, made
over a four-month period, reflects
the stories he has told over the
years. The handle is the bow of the
LST-744, the “landing ship, tank”
that Clifton served on through
the last half of his military career,
including in the Battle of Okinawa.
Immediately under the handle is
a young Clifton, called Cliff by his
shipmates. Dominoes and cards are
shown throughout the artwork, and
Clifton’s monkey is shown holding
the ace of spades.

Mayor wants kids reading this summer
Between dips in the pool and
slumber parties, Chico Mayor J.D.
Clark hopes children in Wise County will dive into a good book over the
summer.
Clark recently announced a community reading initiative, encouraging children and adults to read
during the summer months.
“Being a teacher, I’m in the
unique position of having the summer months off. I’m in city hall a lot,
and I’ll be there this summer during the budgeting process,” Clark
said. “I was thinking of something I
could do during the summer to combine what I do as a day job with the
mayor position.”
The program will culminate with
a reception and drawings for prizes
for kids who read at least six of the
books on Clark’s list, which includes
books specific to each grade level.
However, children are not required
to read books within their grade
level.

skills sharp, too — he is asking participating children to send a halfpage summary of each book read.
Clark’s list for adults includes
some of his favorites.
“I read a lot, and I thought I could
put together a list that really impacted me,” he said. “They may
disagree — they may think it’s a
terrible book. But it will get them
talking about it.”
Clark plans to have discussions
about the adult list on his Facebook
page.
The program begins June 1 and
will conclude with the beginning of
school. In its first year, Clark is hoping to have enough response for the
initiative to continue next year.
“I would like to try to do some kind
of reading encouragement,” he said.
“I feel it’s so important for whatever
they want to do later.”
The program is open for kids and
adults throughout the county.
The reading lists are available on
the municipal website, www.cityofchicotexas.com.

OPINION
OUR VIEWS
Politics could drive postal delivery debate
By PHIL MAJOR
The effort to end Saturday mail
delivery is the subject of a nationwide series of hearings by the
Postal Regulatory Commission,
including one recently in Dallas.
The PRC scheduled rare field
hearings in order to get a better
view of what’s being considered
– ending the universal service
mandate of the postal service by
stopping all Saturday deliveries
except to post office boxes.
While the PRC will not have
a direct impact on the decision
whether to cut back delivery to
five days a week, its opinion of the
USPS’s request could have a big
impact on the final arbiter, the
United States Congress.
The fact that the PRC called
for field hearings shows the five-

the average cost of a postal employee is $84,000 a year. I don’t
know many businesses that could
operate like that without losing
money.
The sad part is that business
decisions will not likely drive
this debate. It will most likely be
political. The Democrats control
Congress. Labor supports Democrats (and Saturday delivery).
Add two and two and see if you
think Saturday mail delivery will
end.
Perhaps the postmaster general, who is forging ahead with an
all-out campaign to convince the
country that Saturday mail needs
to go the way of the Pony Express,
is pushing this issue to help get
the unions back to the bargaining
table for wage concessions.
We will continue to watch and
wait, and if it appears Saturday
mail is dead, we’ll start transition
plans to other means of delivering our weekend edition to Wise
County residents.
The USPS has recommended we
could just change our publication
date. That won’t happen. We told
the PRC we would no longer be
the post office’s largest customer
in Wise County, if Saturday delivery goes away. We’re not sure they
really understood that prior to the
hearing. Now they know. Whether
that has any impact on the final
outcome is anybody’s guess.
We figure we won’t have to pull
the trigger before next year, if at
all. Until then, we’ll just have to
see how it plays out.

many of our present day military personnel receive

Questions raised
about streets
First, I would like to give God all the praise and
glory. I prayed for the right words in every letter.
Also, I would like to thank the city for the immediate response to the street repairs on the west side of
Bridgeport and hiring an outside company to do the
work. It’s not that our own employees could not do
the work, it just worked out this way.
I have just a few questions. Where did the extra
funding come from? Why are you not going all the
way down Critterdon Street? Is it because it’s a dead
end, and no one will see it?
Well, there are folks who live down there and deserve to get the same benefit as the rest of us.
When will the much needed drainage begin? If not
soon, the work being done now will be a huge waste
of money. It would be a shame to get this far and
have to start all over again.
Mayor McComis: thumbs up. You have already
jumped in with both feet and are taking your job very
seriously.

Remember those who sacrificed for freedom
By MARTHA RANDOLPH CARR
It’s time once again to remember
those who have sacrificed their lives in
the service of our country so that the
rest of us can argue over the details
and then go home to dinner with our
families.
Originally, there were separate dates
for Memorial Day. The Southern states
chose their own individual dates, while
the rest of the country chose late May.
After World War I, we let go of some of
our past grievances as a country and
compromised. The South also now recognizes the last Monday in May as the
official date and then has additional
days set aside to commemorate the
Confederate war dead.
While the holiday has since been
taken over by lawn and garden sales,
pool openings and backyard barbecues,
the tradition is supposed to be to visit
the graves of fallen soldiers from any
generation, spruce them up and leave
behind flowers, particularly poppies,
and a small American flag. Poppies
can also be worn in the lapel as a sign
of remembrance and gratitude.
Poppies were first used in the early
20th century and really caught on
when the Veterans of Foreign Wars
started selling them in 1922. A small
flower would be refreshing after the
sea of ribbons and rubber bracelets.
In 2000, a resolution was passed
asking all Americans to pause at 3
p.m. local time, “To voluntarily and
informally observe in their own way a
moment of remembrance and respect,
pausing from whatever they are doing
for a moment of silence or listening
to Taps.” The resolution was signed
by President Clinton with a special
request of gratitude for how well the
country was doing that year, economically.
OK, things have changed quite a bit
in the past 10 years. There’s been 9/11,
a war in two foreign countries that’s
dragging on and a Great Recession.
So that’s all the more reason to take
a moment and recognize what a few
have made possible for the rest of us.
The United States is still here.
That’s the gift. We can come together
in a moment of gratitude to remember and thank those who knowingly
stepped out onto a battlefield to give
the rest of us a chance to continue on
in a democratic state.
No soldier ever asks for those they
defend back home to agree with them
on political or religious issues. They
don’t demand celebrity salaries or
even seek fame for going into armed
combat. Imagine if your job description included ducking from enemy fire
or keeping watch for roadside bombs.
We’d at least want our neighbor to give
us the bigger burger off the grill.
Lately, it’s seemed like those who
work along Wall Street have been
the rocks stars in America, but we’ve
gotten a great reality check in the
past two years about how to recognize what’s really important. People
who make piles of money for moving
around other piles of money should
never be on the list. We have worshipped the Dow long enough and can
stop behaving as if the stock market is
the heartbeat of our country. It’s really
just Vegas on a small island.
Our real rock stars are teachers,
police and firemen and women, civil
servants and parents who raise not
only their own kids, but others as well.
However, at the front of the line
is always going to be the men and
women who join the armed services to
protect our right to free speech, free
assembly, swift courts and quite a few
other freedoms that other countries
can at least dream of because there
is America as an example across the
oceans.

The Wise County Sheriff’s Department is
investigating a claim by a bicyclist that she was
intentionally hit by a vehicle.
The incident happened Thursday morning on
County Road 2690, about three miles northeast of
Alvord.
A bicyclist had just started her ride when a
female neighbor approached in her vehicle. Sgt.
Barney Graham with the sheriff’s department
said that words were exchanged between the
women, and the bicyclist claims that the driver
then intentionally hit her with the vehicle.
The driver left the scene, and the bicyclist
called 911.
The bicyclist was taken to Wise Regional
Health System with minor injuries.
No arrests have been made, and the department is investigating the charges as an aggravated assault.

U.S. is
spiraling to demise
For some time, we have watched as America is being destroyed, and especially now with enormous debt under our
current, socialist-leaning president, Barack Obama.
Surely we Americans have come to the conclusion that
Obama, his administration and most Democrats, as well
as some Republicans, are to be classified as socialists and
are determined to put into place a socialist-type government. Those who oppose this system must put some walk
to their talk and concerns. Those in Washington who will
not listen or act on the requests and will of the majority
must be voted out of office. We will take back this country
if we unite and act. We do not want a European-type government, global economy or currency.
This will lead to the deceptive one-world government
of the Antichrist. Already the spirit of the Antichrist is
at work in the White House, Washington and much of
America. Preachers of the pulpits, where are you and what
say you? What about the 13-story training center/mosque
being built next door to Ground Zero?
Space is not allowed to name a few who have a socialist
mindset and work endlessly to get this goal accomplished.
Never forget Obama’s words: “We will fundamentally
transform America into a system we can believe in.”
Healthcare reform is hot off the press. It is socialist-
type governmental program that when implemented will
destroy our healthcare system.
Yes, I know a large percentage of you support and are
shouting about this. Where will your shout be when you
have to wait for an extended period of time to see a doctor?
You may be having a heart attack or have cancer and need
chemo, but there will be a long line. Your shout will turn
into screams. If you think the Obama government will
provide, then think on. It isn’t going to happen.
Maybe you should consider moving to Canada, England
or maybe Greece. They all have these government-run,
socialized medicine systems.
Greece is hot in the news today. It’s bankrupt because
of the entitlements to their people, and now the country is
being bailed out by the International Monetary Fund. And
in case you didn’t know, we, the American taxpayers, are
the largest contributors to the IMF. Your money is bailing
out Greece.
They are shouting, screaming and fighting in the streets,
even destroying their own country, yet the system has
failed.
America, I ask you – do you want this socialist-type of
government? God help us. May we turn to God with a pure
heart.
We have a choice and time is short, so let’s draw a line in
the sand and take our positions.

Reception draws attention to treatment
By DENNY DEADY
Dr. Haroon Siddique looked
around the room full of people
Thursday and admitted with a big
smile that he was being upstaged
by a dog.
The psychiatrist who heads Wise
Regional Health System’s Behavioral Health Services program,
Dr. Siddique watched as Maggie,
a 3 1/2-year-old Pembroke Welsh
Corgi and certified therapy dog,
became the center of attention at a
reception in recognition of Mental
Health Month.
The tri-color, people-oriented dog
with short legs and no tail greeted
guests warmly and accepted all offers of snacks at the reception on
the west campus of Wise Regional
Health System in Decatur.
“Next year, no dog,” laughed Dr.
Siddique.
The personable health care professional has been medical director of the Behavioral Health Services program since its inception
two years ago. As the reputation
of the program has grown, he has
seen an increase in patients and
services. Maggie is part of those
expanded services.
Jennifer Jarosz, program therapist in the Behavioral Health Intensive Outpatient program, owns
and handles Maggie. They visit patients once a week.
“They love her,” Jarosz says of
the patients. “I’ll often ask them
what the best part of their day has
been, and a lot of times it’s her visit. A lot of them are missing their
own dogs.”

Regional, the majority of patients
are geriatrics who are dealing with
losses, said Dr. Siddique.
Many think their ailments are
just part of the grieving process
over the loss of a loved one.
“They are withdrawn, isolated
and they think it is normal that
they are losing weight so they
don’t get help,” said Dr. Siddique.
“But when you treat depression,
often the memory will improve.”
Also, physical ailments will also go
away.
“There are definitely strong links
between body and mind,” he added,
noting that cardiac problems may
develop from depression, and depression may develop from cardiac
conditions.
“If they don’t seek help, it can
lead to other problems, such as
family problems like divorce,” he
said.
Dr. Siddique is proud of the reputation of the program and its staff.
“We have wonderful therapists,”
he said. “We get very good feedback all the time. We are now getting patients from McKinney and
Southlake. They’ve heard about us.
They’ve tried other places and now
want to try this place.”
A group has been organized at
the center for families of patients.
They meet once a month.
Dr. Siddique is the only psychiatrist officed full-time at the center,
but two other psychiatrists also
see patients.

director, at (940) 626-0145 or [email protected].

Dr. Siddique is intent on removing the stigma from mental health.

South closes 30-year banking career
By DENNY DEADY
With four children, eight grandchildren and a beautiful home
with a spacious yard, it’s doubtful
Mary Nell South will be bored in
retirement.
Besides that, bored has never
been part of her lifestyle.
When South left her teller’s job
at the South Branch of Wells Fargo
Bank in Decatur on Friday after a
reception in her honor, she closed
the door on a 30-year banking career that began in her hometown
of Bryan. She leaves with no regrets and with the knowledge that
it is time to retire.
“I’m excited,” she said. “I do feel
good about it.” She was quick to
add, “I’m gonna miss the people I
see daily.”
Banking has been good to South.
She has had an opportunity to
meet people from all walks of life,
people she says she wouldn’t have
met otherwise.
“I’m really thankful to Jimmy
Cunnius, who called me and offered me a job,” said South of the
former officer of the First National
Bank in Decatur.
“I was working in the office at
church when he called. He gave
me a chance,” she said.
That was 1983, and South
worked as a teller at First National. When the South Branch opened
in 1986, she opted to be part of it.
She retired from that location, although the name of the bank has
changed twice over the years.
In an atmosphere of change in
bank ownership and management,
South remained the constant. Her
familiar face and friendly manner
offered stability for longtime customers.
Those customers thought so
much of her that they voted her

“Best Teller in Wise County” several times over the years.
South has a long list of things
she wants to do in retirement.
First and foremost is time with
her grandchildren. All three of her
daughters live close by, and all are
teachers. She wants to be available to help out when needed, like
times when the kids are sick and
mom needs to be at school.
Her oldest daughter, DeDe Diaczenko, and her two children live
with her. Daughter Sonja and her
husband Davey Edwards live in
Alvord with their two boys, and
daughter Holly and her husband,
Dr. Jeff Harrison and their two
girls live just west of Decatur.
Son Bill and his wife live in Pilot
Point with their two children. Bill
is a fireman in McKinney.
South also wants to travel. She
and her two sisters love to travel
together and try to go somewhere
together twice a year. This year the
three Paula Deen fans are headed
for Savannah, Ga.
“I’ve been volunteering at the
hospital and arranging flowers in
the gift shop at night,” said South.
“Now I’ll be able to do that more.
“I’ve also always wanted to take
part in a morning Bible study.”
As an afterthought, she laughs
and adds, “And this whole house
needs to be cleaned and painted.
I really don’t think I’ll ever get
bored.”

Sales tax rebates increase for first time in months
For the first time in 14

Combs announced the

up 1.4 percent compared to
April 2009. Retail trade saw
almost a 5 percent increase
in collections, and gains also
occurred in the manufacturing sector. Declines continued in the oil and natural

Call

Grant will provide

By KRISTEN TRIBE
Wise County commissioners ran through an agenda
of standard business Monday.
Dr. Keith Argenbright,
with the Moncrief Cancer
Institute, reported to commissioners about grant
money the institute received
for breast and colon cancer
treatments, services and
screenings for patients in
Wise, Denton, Hood, Parker
and Johnson counties.
“We want to come in and
work with you so we can increase screenings and find
breast cancer in Wise County because it’s curable,” Argenbright said. “We need
you to understand the program and hopefully support
it by getting the word out.”
According to Argenbright,
Wise County is in an area
with one of the largest incidences of breast cancer in
the state.
He said there is enough
money to maintain the program for two years, but they
plan to work with local hospitals and doctors to ensure
the program can continue
beyond that.

NEWARK
Council to discuss
information request,
city employees
By BRANDON EVANS
The city of Newark called
a special meeting Friday
night to discuss a public information request made by
a resident.
Bonnie J. Neal, a former
city council member and
candidate in the last election, filed an open records
request on May 21. She requested all copies of city correspondence via e-mail and
city cell phones between
council members Matt Newby, Laura Pixler, Bob Wells,
Chana Massey, Doug Anderson, Bandy Hicks and mayor
Matt Newby between Jan. 1,
2009, and May 21, 2010.
The council was to discuss
the request and possibly
take action on it.
According to the “Texas
Freedom of Information
Handbook,” once a “governmental agency has received a written request for
a record, the agency must
promptly make it available
for copying or inspecting.”
And under the statute, “the
officer for public records has
no right to ask the intent or
purpose of the person seeking access to records.”
In executive session during the meeting, the council
planned to discuss the city
secretary position. City secretary Tabitha Tucciarone
turned in her resignation
Monday. Her last day is
June 18.
The council also planned
to discuss the duties of several city employees, including the police chief, police
officer and the court clerk.
The meeting was to be
held at 7 p.m. at the Newark
Library Building, after the
Messenger’s press deadline
for Sunday. Go to www.wcmessenger.com for coverage
of the meeting.

Members of the Wise
County Health Group/Forum got a preliminary look
at results from the Community Health Survey Thursday.
Consultant Greg Eastin
said the timing is good for
the study, because the national health-care reforms
focus resources on community health centers. The information will be helpful in
Wise County’s attempts to
establish such a health center.
A more comprehensive
look at the study’s results
will be forthcoming at a
meeting set aside solely for
that purpose.
The data is tailored to be
useful in the application for
a health center, Eastin said.
The involvement of the
health group will also carry
a lot of weight in the application scoring, he said.
Susan Sodek with Cook
Children’s Hospital briefed
the group on the Communitywide Children’s Health
Assessment and Planning
Survey, which looks at children’s health issues in the
six-county region served by
Cook.
The study identified the
primary health-care issues
faced by children and outlined plans to form community coalitions to set
priorities and implement
solutions.
Tanya Davis reported on
surveys of vendors at the
annual health fair in April,
with most of the responses
favorable, and 100 percent
agreeing to participate in
the fair again next year.
The group discussed the
need for a comprehensive
directory of public healthcare services and agreed
that grouping such information in the Wise County
Messenger’s annual Medical,
Health and Wellness Directory each spring could serve
that purpose.

Understanding
What We Read
“Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus,
but to trust and obey.” This is the chorus of the song “Trust and
Obey,” out of an old hymnal entitled Songs of Truth. How true are the words to this
song if we will just abide by them. Probably one of the hardest things for a lot of us
to do is to put total trust in God. In other words, trust what his word tells us to do
and believe it is right. There is great comfort and reward in trusting in God. “But let
all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou
defendest them…” (Ps 5:11). “O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the
man that trusteth in him” (Ps 34:8). “Blessed” is translated from the Hebrew word,
“ashar;” meaning happy or relieved. Think of our everyday burdens that will be lifted
off of us just to put our trust in what God speaks to us thru his word. We should let
God’s word guide us: “Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall
bring it to pass” (Ps 37:5). What is the reward for those that trust and obey? “Trust
in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land…” (Ps 37:3). Trust in what
he says and do what is right according to the word and, as a result, the word says
you will inherit eternal life in the new world to come. “Trust in the Lord with all thine
heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him
(or know him), and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5, 6). How do we know
him? Let the word answer who the real God is, he is not a Trinitarian god: “…that
ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he (one not 3 in one):
before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me” (Is 43:10).
Look at what benefits there are to obeying the word: “…Obey my voice, and I will
be your God, and ye shall be my people and walk ye in ALL the ways that I have
commanded you, that it may be well unto you” (Jer 7:23). Trusting and obeying our
guidebook will bring us happiness and do us well.

ily, and I played poker,”
Clifton said. “Most of the

Dewey heard me talk
about.”
Clifton was drafted Jan.
26, 1942, into the Army at
22 years old, but he was
swayed to join the Navy
at the advice of an Army
colonel.
“He said, ‘If I were you,
I’d join the Navy. You’ll
have a dry bed as long as
you’re floating. In the Army,
you never know how many
nights you’ll spend in a wet
foxhole,’” Clifton said.
Clifton spent the first
14 months of the war in
Australia. After coming
home for an 18-day vacation, he went to Washington, D.C., to start classes.
During class one day, an
officer came in and asked
if anyone was interested in
volunteering for “amphib.”
“No one knew what an
amphib was,” he said.
But, he raised his hand,
and soon the whole class
had volunteered to serve.
The “amphib” was an LST,
a vessel designed to carry
vehicles, cargo and landing
troops directly to shore. The
vessels were able to land on
unimproved shorelines and
unload tanks, other vehicles
and troops.
As a second class gunner’s mate, Clifton was a
target of enemy fire from
land and from the air. Kamikaze pilots and torpedoes
routinely set their sites on
the LST-744.
Under the strain of trying
to make it through the day
alive and without injury,
Clifton turned to liquor to
ease the stress.
“The only thing that
kept me going was liquor.
I drank a fifth of bourbon
every day,” he said. “If it
hadn’t been for that whiskey, I would have been nuts
when I got out. I did that
because I was scared.”
Clifton was on a busy
ship of 120 enlisted men
and officers.
“We didn’t have time
to get acquainted. I was
acquainted with the guys
in my division,” he said. “Of
course, I was always friends
with the cooks and the bakers.”
As proof, Clifton said he
weighed 140 pounds when
he went into the Navy and
came out almost four years
later at 180.
Clifton does have some
happier memories of his
time in the Pacific, including those of a monkey he
acquired in Saipan.
“I traded a hot case of
beer for that monkey on
Saipan,” he said. “I didn’t
know a thing about monkeys.”

HISTORY AS ART — Ashley Clifton’s walking stick is an artistic interpretation of his stories
from his time serving in World War II. With images highlighting Clifton’s interest in poker and
his liquor “stores,” the walking stick took four months to complete.
became a pet to Clifton
and his shipmates. He
would ride on the Skipper’s
shoulder as he walked the
deck. Clifton laughed as he
talked about the monkey
taking his tools and climbing overhead so he could
drop them on people walking underneath.
Sadly, the monkey was
thrown overboard several
months later, but with no
proof of who did it, no one
was punished.
Clifton also had several
liquor storage spots on the
vessel that he called liquor
stores. He bought the bottles for about $25 and sold
them for $50. The officers
were loyal customers.
He also has a fond memory of the mail buoy.
“The last trip we went
out before Okinawa, we
had a bunch of kids. One
kid wrote home every day,”
he said. “One day, he asked
me when they would get
a chance to mail those letters.”
Clifton responded that
the ship would run across a
mail buoy, where they could
drop off their mail. The
young man believed him.
But the jokes and moments of fun were overshadowed by battles, and
Clifton saw many fellow
seaman and soldiers die in
the war.

“I had an angel or something riding on my shoulder
the whole time I was over
there,” he said.
The images of war have
never left him, and he still
has the occasional nightmare. For years, he couldn’t
hear a firecracker without
thinking of gunfire.
With death a close
companion for almost four
years, Clifton said that the
death of family members
doesn’t affect him as much
as people who haven’t experienced war.
“When my wife died, it
didn’t hurt me like most
people because I’d seen too
many people die,” Clifton
said.
But he is comforted by
the appreciation of others. His walking stick is a
conversation starter and
gives him a chance to tell
his stories.
“Young men will stop him
on the street and thank him
for his service,” Adrienne
said. “It’s nice to know that
people still appreciate the
service.”

EARLY HONOREE — Brandon Jones looks over his awards after the Decatur High School
honor ceremony Tuesday.

“I’m just glad I could do
something for my parents,”
Brandon said. “She had
been so upset all week not
being able to go to graduation. When I walked up to
my mom tonight she was
bawling and crying.”
“Now I can go,” Mrs. Jones
said of the trip. “I’m ready.”
Lia will be the fifth child
in the family. Brandon has
two older brothers and a
younger sister.
“It was Brandon’s idea,”
Mrs. Jones said. “We thought
about it for a while and
prayed about it, and God
just led us to the decision.”
Brandon learned about
another family in his church
that had adopted a Chinese
child. He learned more and
felt it was the right thing to
do.
China’s one-child policy
restricts urban couples to
one child. The country also
has a long tradition of preferring sons to daughters.

Coach injured in wreck
By RICHARD GREENE
Decatur volleyball coach
Claire Rose suffered minor
injuries and was taken to
Wise Regional Health System for treatment after a
two-vehicle accident Thursday morning in Decatur.
Rose, 29, of Paradise, was
stopped at a red light on
Farm Road 51 at Preskitt
in her Cadillac when a Ford
F-150 driven by Terry Shero, 28, of Alvord, struck her
from the rear at 6:15 a.m.
“She was stopped at the
light, and he thinks he may
have dozed off and hit her,”
said Decatur Officer Robert
Cain.
“She was stopped in the
right lane, and he hit her
and drug her 246 feet until

they came to a rest.”
Rose’s vehicle stopped in
the left-turn lane north of
Preskitt. Shero’s truck came
to rest in the northbound
ditch.
The impact of the collision
broke Rose’s car seat in half,
said Cain.
Decatur Athletic Director
Kyle Story visited Rose in
the emergency room.
“She has a few aches and
pains,” Story said. “Her
shoulder, left hip and cheek
bone are sore.”
He said Rose’s x-rays and
other tests revealed no broken bones or other injuries.
Rose led the Lady Eagles on an undefeated run
through District 5-3A in
the fall to claim the league
crown.
Cain said Shero refused
treatment. He likely will be
cited for failure to control
speed.
The accident shut down
northbound traffic on FM 51
for nearly an hour. Traffic
was diverted onto Preskitt.

BASEBALL
It’s a hit
Wise County youth baseball players wrapped up their regular season Thursday
night. Decatur Baseball will start its postseason tournaments next week.
The Decatur Red Sox won the 11/12 division going 14-0 and will be the No.
1 seed in the tournament. The Red Sox’ Noah Rios, top, hit a grand slam in the
team’s 15-2 win Thursday. He is welcomed at home plate by teammate Ryan
Durdon. Red Sox third baseman Ismeal Godoy, left, stops a ball at third as a
member of the Alvord Bulldogs slides in.

The Alvord Lady Bulldogs
will make their bid for a third
straight trip to the softball playoffs next spring without Jenna
Barthold on the bench.
Barthold announced this week
that she is taking next year off
from coaching. The Lady Bulldogs’ coach is due to give birth
to twins in early November.
“I’ll have my hands full with
two,” Barthold said. “It’ll be very
hard leaving the girls behind,
but I plan to go see them when
I can.”

SCANNING THE FIELD — Boyd quarterback Jared Cate looks for a receiver to get open during the
Yellowjackets’ 7-on-7 game against Bridgeport Thursday night.
Boyd quarterback Jared Cate appeared cool and calm about taking
over for last season’s District 9-2A
MVP Thursday night in the Yellowjackets’ opening 7-on-7 game
in the Wise County League.
Cate, who will be a junior, completed his first seven passes as the
Yellowjackets flew past Bridgeport
in the touch-foootball game that
relies solely on passing.
As Boyd split its games with
Bridgeport and Decatur, Cate finished the day 29-for-45 with nine
touchdowns.
Cate is looking forward to the
challenge of following in the footsteps of Tim Fleming, who delivered a district championship from
under center.

Cate
tries for
passing...
Continued from page 1B
“I’ve been ready for it
and living to play on Friday
night,” Cate said. “I know expectations are high because
of Tim and our tradition.”
The new quarterback will
be trying replace Fleming’s
967 yards passing and 1,091
rushing along with a combined 19 touchdowns.
Cate is not the bruising
and versatile runner that
Fleming was. He is expected
to move the ball through the
air more.
“I’m not going to be as much
of a runner,” he said. “I know I
will need to get my foot speed
up to be able to scramble if I
need to.”
As a sophomore, Cate led
Boyd’s junior varsity to an 81 record.
In Thursday’s first game,
Cate came out and took just
four plays to get the Yellowjackets into the end zone. Behind Cate, Boyd scored on its
first five possessions. He went
15-for-19 in the span. He finished the contest 17 of 25.
Cate spread the ball to six
different receivers with five
players hauling in touchdowns.
“That’s what we try to do,
spread the ball around,” he
said. “We have a good set of
receivers. We’d like to get several with 500 yards.”
In the second game against
Decatur, Cate connected on
his first 10 throws and led the
Yellowjackets to three quick
scores. The third touchdown
was a 40-yard connection
with Junior Whatley.
But after the hot start, the
Boyd quarterback cooled.
He connected on just two of
his final 10 passes. One of
those connections was a 40yard touchdown pass to answer Decatur’s Tyler Hodges,
strike to Dillon Quinn.
Down by a score, Cate got
the ball back with two minutes left. He missed on four
passes to end the game.
“When they caught up, I
tried to go deep more,” Cate
said. “I need to stick with the
shorter routes.”
SOFTBALL
Barthold
to take
year off ...
Continued from page 1B
Barthold plans to only be
away from the bench a year.
Her assistant, Ron Holson,
will take over managing the
team. Barthold, who has been
at Alvord for three years,
served as an assistant under
Holson before taking over in
2009.
“I’m leaving them in good
hands,” she said. “He knows
what I want done.”
Alvord will return all but
one starter next season, including pitcher Harley Hooks.
The Lady Bulldogs finished
second in District 9-2A this
season, going 19-12.
“Hopefully the girls keep
working hard,” Barthold said.
“They know what to do.”
In two seasons under Barthold, the Lady Bulldogs are
35-24 with two playoff appearances.

OFF AND RUNNING — Bridgeport’s Gabe Huerta runs away from a Paradise defender
during the Bulls’ 7-on-7 game Thursday night. Huerta was one of several young
Bridgeport backs and receivers to get work in the game.
The Bridgeport Bulls rode
a passing game that averaged 233 yards per game
last season to a District 53A title.
The Bulls and quarterback Cody Henson are trying to retool that aerial attack without two of their
top targets from last year
— Jordan Daniel and Austin
Blevins. The graduating duo
hauled in 114 passes and 15
touchdowns.
Bridgeport hit the field for
its first games of the Wise
County 7-on-7 league Thursday, looking to get its group
of young receivers work.
With the team’s third-leading receiver from last year,
Jace Hudson, out because of
off-season surgery, the Bulls
took the field with only one
player — Trent Schuett —
with more than 10 catches
last season. Schuett caught
15 passes for 225 yards last
year.
The young receivers and
Bridgeport’s three quarterbacks, including Henson,
had trouble getting on the
same page in the first game
against Boyd Thursday. The
Bulls completed just eight
of their 41 passes with an
interception.
Bridgeport
scored on only one of its
seven drives in the loss to
Boyd.
Henson, who threw for
2,795 yards and 28 touchdowns last year, went 4-for14 with an interception and
a touchdown.
Bridgeport
rebounded
against Paradise in the second game of the evening.
The Bulls’ quarterbacks
were 19-for-27 with five
touchdowns in a win over
the Panthers. Henson went
19-for-27 in the contest with
three scores.
“We’ll get it worked out,”
Henson said. “Guys have to
step up. This 7-on-7 gives us
a chance to get familiar with
everything and work it out.
It mainly gives us a chance
to get out and compete.”
Schuett and Garrett Mullins showed the ability to get
open and make plays in the
open field.
Mullins, who had five receptions last season, flew
past a defender and caught
a 40-yard touchdown pass
from Henson against Boyd.
He also scored in short yardage against Paradise.
Schuett hauled in two
scores against the Panthers.
“Garrett and Trent are
fast and have good feet,”
Henson said. “They have
a year more of experience
which will help us.”

Three Wise County schools will try to
qualify for this summer’s state 7-on-7
tournament this weekend.
Decatur, Bridgeport and Boyd will compete at Saturday’s state qualifier at Prosper against some of the region’s top 3A
and 2A schools beginning at 9 a.m.
The Wise County schools will join Prosper, Lovejoy, Sanger, Pilot Point and others to battle for two spots into the Division
II 7-on-7 tournament July 8-9 at Texas
A&M University in College Station.
Teams will have the opportunity to
qualify at other tournaments in the area
later this summer.
