PechaKucha Night
Hosted By Proof Design Studio
PechaKucha Night will feature presentations on creative
ideas, local projects and musings. Devised in Tokyo by
Klein Dytham Architecture, PechaKucha (the Japanese
phrase for “the sound of chitchat”) started as a night
for creative people to meet, network, and discuss their
projects. The catch: each person gave a presentation
containing only 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds,
for a total presentation length of six minutes 40 seconds.
These constraints challenged presenters to clarify their
ideas and match each thought with the perfect image.
More than 50 presentations have been given at Galway
PechaKucha Nights to date on wide-reaching topics,
from Restoring Castles to Shock Advertising to Hoovering
In Space and everything in between.

Athenry Music School is a not-for-profit, community
music school which aims to develop Athenry as a
centre for outstanding and prolific musical activity; by
fostering an ethos of inclusivity through nurturing and

orchestra’s repertoire has been composed specifically
for the ensemble by the directors, Kevin Brett and Ross

Hay, manifests spontaneous songs, ancient rituals, fake

venues including Project Arts Centre and The Lab Dublin,

Short Story Reading
Nuala Ní Chonchúir
Nuala Ní Chonchúir is an award winning short story
writer, novelist and poet, born in Dublin in 1970 and living
in Galway. Her début novel You (New Island, 2010) was
called ‘a heart-warmer’ by The Irish Times and ‘a gem’
by The Irish Examiner. Her third poetry collection The Juno
Charm was published by Salmon Poetry in 2011.
Nuala will read today from her fourth short story
collection Mother America which is just out from New
Island. Nuala’s story ‘Peach’ from the book featured in
the Winter 2011 issue of Prairie Schooner, won the Jane
Geske Award and has been nominated for a
Pushcart Prize.

Morgan O’Brien is a Galway based freelance artist working

In a stark departure from his more recognizable children’s
illustrations, 2012 Galway Fringe Artist Morgan O’Brien
presents a micro-exhibition of traditional abstract collages.
‘Breakdown’, a body of work which has never before been
seen in public, utilizes found/collected print materials
and through a process of deconstruction/reconstruction
reinvigorates said materials with a new lease of artistic life.

The NUI Galway Societies asked the national school
children of Galway to create works of art inspired by
Galway’s Summer Festivals. Call and see the fruits of their
imagination in an exhibition in NUI Galway.

Jojo Hynes & Galway City Youth Cafe
Public Space Investigations Galway is a collaborative
mixed media arts investigation that will challenge and
inform people’s perceptions of public space. Exploring
notions of place, community, belonging, identity vs.
media, youth culture, the ownership of public space and
the links between the people that occupy it at different
times of the day. Members of Galway City Youth Café will
be creating throughout the fringe so watch out for us on
the streets. On the final weekend we will have a closing
event of our findings with entry by donation. Instigated by
