one of three Republic of Ireland winners in

“My nominated project aimed to help stop

Abbeydorney National School, where the
school children will design the road signs
to appeal to people to stop dumping,” said
Dermot. Speaking about his reason for

choosing an art competition to help combat
fly dumping, Dermot said: “This is an issue I feel
passionate about as do most people who live
in our community. I believe we need to raise
awareness of the issue to protect our beautiful
countryside. If the campaign is a success it will
benefit the community by stopping the fly
dumping. It will also bring the community
together by including the children of our local
school in the process. We will in turn reach out
to parents and generate greater awareness of
this problem.”

IT IS TIME TO THANK, VALUE AND RECOGNISE
KERRY’S VOLUNTEERS
The Kerry Volunteer Centre are encouraging the public to take part in
National Volunteering Week from the 12th to 18th May. There are over
34 events scheduled to date, ranging from coffee mornings, information
sessions, open days and hands on Volunteering projects. The message from
Kerry Volunteer Centre and captured in all events is very clear, Volunteers
deserve to be thanked, valued and recognised.
The Kerry Volunteer Centre in Tralee will host a ‘Valuing Volunteers Coffee
Morning’ on Friday 16th.
The ‘thank you’ initiative of the Kerry Volunteer Centre is simple, clever and
effective way of shining a light on those who, across the length and breath
of Kerry, are making Kerry and Ireland a better place for all of us to live in.
Echoing the thank you message locally is Kerry Autism Action’s secretary,
Hannah Lane: “Without the tireless efforts of all of our volunteers who
give up their time so generously, Kerry Autism Action and all our activities
and services to our families simply would not exist. So volunteers, during
National Volunteering Week, take some time to give yourself a pat on the
Kerry Volunteer Centre staff Geraldine Sheehan (Manager) and Linda McCarthy

back and take credit for being an inspiration to us all and for making such an
impact on Kerry Autism Action. Thank You Volunteers.”

The fourth episode of the top rated TV3 series,

In episode 4, aired on last Thursday night, Neville
travelled to Gurrane in Firies to surprise the Lynch’s,
Caroline and Colm and their three daughters Anna
(10) Jane (7) and Ruth (5). Caroline nominated the
spare room of the house for a makeover. One year ago
Caroline and Colm became foster parents. They take
in children between the ages of 5 and 12, however
they do not know if it will be a boy or a girl coming
to them. They wanted to create a gender neutral space that the
children could enjoy, however they found it difficult
to come up with the right design. Neville created a
happy bright and colourful space that will bring joy
to those who are fortunate enough to use it.

ALL IRELAND SCHOOLS
BASKETBALL GLORY FOR
MILLTOWN PRESENTATION
May started on a bright note for top hoop stars
in Mid Kerry when the Milltown Presentation 1st
Year Boys won their All Ireland final in UL.
In the semi final against Presentation de La Salle
College, Bagenalstown, the Milltown boys played
great basketball as a team and pulled away in
the final two quarters to run out 30-17 winners.
In the final Pres. Miltown met Colaiste Na Sceilge
of Cahersiveen who they had previously beaten
twice this year. Colaiste Na Sceilge were coached
by former Tralee Tigers legend John Teahen.
Milltown only came within two points of Colaiste
Na Sceilge in the first 3 quarters and were down by
as much as 10 points at one stage. The 4th quarter
was definitely the most exciting of the match.
Miltown finally began to push the pace and run
the ball with Shane Callaghan and Barry Keane
trying to break quickly at every opportunity. The
Cahersiveen boys appeared to tire in the fourth
quarter, and John O’ Rourke, Gabrielus Savickis,
Shane Burke and Gearoid Murphy started to show
their strength under the
boards. Sean Coffey also
began to come into the
game running the base
line and using some very
intelligent passing of the
ball.

“In addition, in a town with a
growing population and with a
higher than national average
unemployment rate, sports clubs
such as Austin Stacks are now
filling very important social as
well as sporting roles within our
community. Developing our off
the field offering and catering for
changing social demands is a key
goal for our club over the coming
year which we hope would be
good for the youth of Tralee as
a whole,” said Aidan O’Connor,
Chairman of
Austin Stacks GAA Club. To cater for
this significant juvenile demand,
the club is buying and developing
‘The Nun’s Field’ in Connolly Park at
a projected cost of €250,000. “This
work will begin in the coming
months and to defray the cost we
are holding a major Fundraising
night at the Kingdom Greyhound
Stadium on Friday May 23rd. We are
asking the businesses of the town
to help support us in this venture
by buying an advertisement
in our program on the night.
Your company’s logo will go on the
Austin Stacks GAA Club’s website
for the next 12 months. We will
promote supporting companies
amongst our large membership
and on our social media which
has a link to over 5,000 facebook
members. If you would like to help
us in our quest, please contact any
club officer or Aidan O’Connor on

HUMPY’S BACK!

Quest to retain Tidy Town Gold
Medal underway as Tralee
prepares to welcome summer
ONE hour per week for only six weeks is what it will take to help
Tralee retain the lucrative Gold Medal status in this year’s Tidy Town’s
Competition. The campaign to win the three-in-a-row is underway
since the 1st of May and local people have been invited to volunteer
to take part in the weekly clean-up events between 7pm and 8pm
every Thursday in May and June.
The CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Kieran Ruttledge, said: “The hard
work and dedication of the people involved in the volunteer effort to
move towards a better Tralee has paid off in recent years and we are
fully behind the campaign to climb the Tidy Towns ladder in 2014.
It was a wonderful achievement to win consecutive Gold Medals in
2012 and 2013 and to be shortlisted in the Top 10 Tourism Towns
Awards in 2013. This year we have an added incentive to make sure
our town is looking its best when Tralee represents Ireland in the
Entente Florale Competition. A tidy Tralee will also go a long way
towards helping businesses in the tourism sector to attract more
visitors this year.” Tralee Chamber Alliance has already taken steps to
help frontline hotel and tourist sector staff with all the positive familyfriendly attractions on their doorstep.
Over 50 people, including the volunteers who will work in the Tourism
Kiosk in the Town Centre took part in a familiarisation tour of Tralee
ahead of the upcoming summer holiday season.
Organised by Tralee Chamber Alliance and the Tralee Hotel Group,
the participants enjoyed an educational and entertaining tour of the
town’s key tourist and beauty spots including the Town Park, Kerry
County Museum, Siamsa Tire Theatre, Blennerville Windmill and
Tralee Bay Wetlands. “Everyone can do some simple things to approve
the appearance of their premises such as wiping down the paintwork
and cleaning the windows but it needs to be done regularly. If we all
work together we can make Tralee a better place. A more attractive
town is good for business, so let’s help Tidy Towns achieve the Gold
medal,” added Kieran Ruttledge.
For more information on how to volunteer, please contact Joan
O’Regan at the Tralee Chamber Alliance Office, 18 Denny Street,
Tralee, email [email protected] or phone 066 7121472.

COUNCILLOR JOHN BRASSIL
ON EDUCATION MATTERS
I have been faced with many issues
of concern over the past number of
months whilst out canvassing, one of
the biggest concerns I have faced on
the doorstep is the abolition of the
Junior Cycle in its current form.
I realise that this is not normally
an issue associated with the Local
Election but it is an issue that I feel
strongly about, as a parent of three
school aged children and as Chairman
of Causeway Comprehensive School,
and in response to the concern I
have experienced from parents and
teachers alike I feel I must take this
opportunity to voice my concern.
The Minister, Ruiri Quinn is proposing
to abolish the Junior Certificate
exam based cycle and replace it with
a continual assessment model that is
less focused on end of year exams.
While I agree that there is some scope
for continual assessment I believe
the current Junior Cert exams are an
opportunity to give every student
the appropriate preparation and
experience of sitting state exams
before their Leaving certificate. The
Minister is also proposing that schools
would be self assessing, this is not
viable, and students need their work
to be externally and independently
24
15.05.14
moderated to ensure consistency
and fairness across the board with a
national grade standard maintained.
If teachers had been properly
consulted in the process then those
with the most knowledge and
experience could have influenced
towards better reforms but this has
not been the case and the views
of teachers has been continuously
ignored throughout the process. If
re-elected to Kerry County Council
I will campaign and lobby for the
Fianna Fáil party to have as it’s core
proposal on education to abandon
this misconceived policy.

PEOPLE BEING ASKED TO PAY
3 TIMES FOR WATER- Pa Daly
Speaking after the Government
announced details of the water
charges, Sinn Féin Tralee Town
Councillor and local election
candidate Pa Daly has once again
reiterated his party’s continued
opposition to domestic water
charges
and
household
metering.
He accused the Government of
merely moving figures around to
try and save face before the local
elections in just over 2 weeks.
“People will in effect be paying
three times for their water. Not
only are water charges being
levied but the Local Property
Tax is going to provide €486
million in subvention to Irish
Water instead of supporting local
services as it was claimed. On top
of that a considerable amount of
money has already been given to
the new entity from the Central
Exchequer. This is outrageous.
“Sinn Féin is opposed to the
introduction of domestic water
charges. It is unjust, unfair
and simply another cost to
Irish taxpayers who have been
burdened with the responsibility
26
15.05.14
of paying back billions of Euro of
banking debt.
“I do not believe that the €240
average charge estimated by
the government is plausible.
It is suspiciously close to the
€238 average charge that was
contained in the Fine Gael
manifesto, and opposed at the
time by Labour, and I do not
believe that it takes account of
the actual costs of establishing
and running the new entity.
“Fianna
Fáil proposed
to introduce an average charge
of between €400 and €500.
These figures were arrived at by
the troika and were based on the
costs of administering the Irish
water service, and the EU Water
Directive which insists that all
of the costs of water supply are
recovered through charges.
“How then can the Government
assure us that the average
cost will be €240, including
exemptions and allowances?
“It is very likely that the waiver
scheme will disappear after a few
years just like it did with the bin
charges. Workers on low incomes
and the unemployed are among
the categories of people who will
not benefit from it.
“The abolition of the standing
charge doesn’t mean anything
given that the government have
committed to collecting an extra
€530 million from water charges.
They will achieve this by charging
a higher rate on the water used
in excess of the free allowance
given to householders.
“I fear that any apparent
commitment on water charges is
simply a fig leaf to hide Labour’s
embarrassment at reneging on
yet another election promise,
and solely designed to get the
Government parties over the
coming elections.
“We have to wait until August
for the true cost of water charges
to be announced, conveniently
after the local elections.”
Tommy Collins Independent candidate for Tralee area rural
and urbanwith his daughter Aoife and two supporters
Kerry and Bano.

COUNTDOWN TO THE 2014 LOCAL ELECTIONS

15.05.14
When nominations for the 2014
Municipal Elections formally closed
last Tuesday, 14 candidates declared
their intentions to run for the 9
electoral seats in the Tralee area.
When the county last went to the
polls in Local Elections in 2009, seven
seats were up for grabs in Tralee. As
a result of the abolition of the Town
Council Tralee has been awarded
two additional seats, and the extra
areas of Brosna and Knocknagoshel
have been added to the Tralee
Municipal area. Issues such as job
creation, education, the condition
of local roads, the continued doubts
about the future of rural post offices
are major areas of discussion in
these local elections.
Of the seven candidates that were
successful in 2009, six are seeking
re-election, namely Toireasa Ferris
(Sinn Fein), Jim Finucane and Pat
McCarthy (Fine Gael), Terry O’Brien
(Labour), and Norma Foley (Fianna
Fail).
Labour’s Gillian Wharton-Slattery,
who was co-opted to the Council
in 2011 following the election of
Arthur J Spring to the Dail, is also
defending her seat, while Cllr Anne
McEllistrim, who was elected for the
Tralee area in 2009, is seeking reelection in Killarney.
The party conventions of Fianna Fail
and Fine Gael created controversy.
In Fianna Fail’s case, former TD
for Kerry North, Tom McEllistrim
is seeking election in Tralee. Mr
McEllistrim who lost his Dail seat in
the 2011 General Election is back
on the campaign trail. Fianna Fail’s
ticket is very strong with outgoing
County Councillor Norma Foley a
daughter of former TD Denis Foley
and a proven worker in her own right,
and Ted Fitzgerald, an outgoing
member of Tralee Town Council for
over 40 years. Another Tralee Town
Councillor, Johnnie Wall, who had
sought the Fianna Fail nomination
but was unsuccessful, is standing
as an independent, following his
decision to quit the party.
It remains to be seen what effect Mr
Wall’s decision will have on Fianna
Fail’s overall share of the vote. A
number of Fianna Fail grassroots
members were critical of the party’s
decision to run just three candidates
in the Tralee area and believe that
with 9 seats available the party
should have run four.
Fine Gael, too had some internal
difficulties at their convention where
the party imposed a gender balance
to the ticket which resulted in the
selection of Tralee Town Councillor
and former Mayor Grace O’Donnell
from Oakpark, who joined outgoing
Councillors Jim Finucane and Pat
McCarthy.
Cllr O’Donnell’s selection left Tralee
Mayor Pat Hussey out in the cold
and he subsequently resigned his
membership of the party.
Sinn Fein are running outgoing
County Councillor Toireasa Ferris,
and Tralee Town Councillor Pa Daly,
an excellent contributor at Tralee
Town Council meetings.
Labour are expected to face a
backlash from the public following
the performance of the party and
party leader Eamonn Gilmore in
government; their ticket consists
of sitting Councillors Terry O’Brien,
Gillian
Wharton-Slattery,
and
Graham Spring, a brother of Arthur
Spring and the latest member of
the Spring dynasty to enter Kerry
politics.
Apart from Johnnie Wall, there are
two other Independent candidates
in Tralee, Tralee Town Councillor
Sammy Locke who is well-known
for his community work in the town,
and Tralee environmentalist Tommy
Collins who ran in 2009.
In 2009, the total electorate was
29,305 which made for a quota of
2,180. With the additional areas
added into the new landscape, the
quota is expected to be in the region
of 2,300 this time.
Many seasoned observers of the
Kerry political scene believe that
Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and Sinn
Fein will each take two seats when
the votes are counted, Labour are
guaranteed one, and will fight it out
for the last two seats with Fianna
Fail and whichever Independent
candidate remains in the race.
Sinn Fein’s Toireasa Ferris is widely
expected to top the poll given the
party’s current strong showing
nationally and locally.
When the polling stations close,
all ballot boxes will be taken to
Killarney where the boxes will be
sorted and checked. At this stage,
the European Election votes will
remain in Killarney while the Tralee
and Listowel Area Council votes
will come to the new John Mitchels
Complex in Tralee where the count
proper will take place.

OUTLOOK ON THE STATE EXAMINATIONS
Good exam techniques will improve your grades
Consistent study sets you up nicely for the
state exams. However, it’s also important to
prepare your answering strategy. Candidates
who adopt a planned approach to answering
the question papers will be successful. Begin
with a detailed study of the exam timetable.
Obtain a personal copy and highlight the
days and times when you are due to sit for a
subject.
Each subject is answered in an A4 style
covered booklet. Write your exam number,
the subject and tick whether you intend
answering through Irish or English. Read
the directions on the back cover before you
write anything. Each page of the answer book
contains two margins. Only the number of
the question and each sub-question should
appear in the left-hand margin. The righthand margin is for the corrector’s use only.
Write your answers between the margins and
work neatly down the page. Write clearly and
legibly. Keep your answers well spread out
for easy reading. Number each question and
sub-question clearly in the left-hand margin
to make it easier for the corrector to follow
your work.
Don’t split questions by answering a part of
a question on one page and then the other
part a few pages further on. If you are unable
to completely answer a question leave a page
blank to which you can subsequently return.
Use diagrams, sketches and illustrations if
they enhance your answer. Small drawings
aren’t helpful and may be difficult to interpret.
Use decent size diagrams, as they are quicker
to draw and allow greater inclusion of detail.
While the presentation of your answering
won’t merit extra marks, a well-presented
script will make a favourable impression on
the corrector.
The core of any exam is the quality of your
answering. The content of your answer
to each question must be relevant to the
question asked. Read each question carefully
before deciding which ones to answer.
Tackle a good question first to settle you
down. Before answering a question list the
key points around which you will build your
answer. Be concise, accurate and relevant.
Don’t be long-winded or wordy. Waffle and
repetition will not impress the corrector.
Be familiar with the format of each paper well
before the date of each exam session. Know
how the paper is presented. What topics
are examined? How many questions must
be answered? What styles of question can
you expect on any exam paper? Familiarise
yourself with the choice available on the
paper. Is one or more question compulsory
or is there an unrestricted choice available
to you? Be particularly careful about a paper,
which is subdivided into subsections. Without
prior knowledge of such a paper you could
easily fail to address the relevant number of
questions. Over the next few weeks, as you
do past papers, and again at the exam, read
the instructions carefully. It’s a good idea to
handle a recent past paper in each subject for
physical familiarity.
Doing well in any exam involves not just
knowing the course material but also in
presenting your answers within the time
allowed. Be determined to attempt the
required number of questions. If you don’t
attempt a question you can’t possibly earn
any marks for it. Be aware of the marking
scheme for each paper and work out in
advance the approximate time you can
afford to devote to each question. The time
allocated to each question should be in direct
proportion to the marks available for that
question. Let me reemphasis that the student
who attempts the required number of
questions is the one who has the best chance
of maximising her/his grade in that subject.
So work out in advance, and write down,
the approximate time
at which you should
be completing each
question.
When your exam paper
is handed to you read
the instructions in case
there is a change in
format. Then spend
about five minutes
reading the entire
paper. This preliminary
scrutiny of all the
questions gives you
the feel of the paper
and allows you to settle
down and gather your
thoughts. Stick to your
own pre-prepared
answering plan and

competition at the IT Tralee.
once you have made
30
15.05.14
your choice of questions, start with a question
you can answer well. As you warm to your
task, you will be pleasantly surprised at the
font of information that comes to mind, as
you need it.
When you have finished each question,
reread it to ensure you haven’t omitted any
part. Allow at least five minutes at the end of
the exam to read back over your answers and
to check your enumeration and your overall
presentation.
In the next article, I will have some advice for
parents of exam candidates.
Checklist
• A planned approach to answering leads to
success
• A well-presented script makes a favourable
impression
• Number your questions clearly and write
neatly and legibly
• Leave some blank space at the end of each
question in case you wish to revisit it
• Read the entire paper before deciding which
questions you will answer
• Keep your answers concise, accurate and
relevant
• Familiarise yourself with the logistics of each
examination paper
• Be careful with a paper which is subdivided
into subsections
• Handle a recent past paper for familiarity
with its physical appearance and colour
• The time spent on a question must be in
proportion to the marks for the question
• Proper allocation of time will enable you to
attempt the required number of questions
• Reread the question when you have
answered it to ensure you haven’t left out a
part
• Examination timetables are available on

GEARING UP FOR THE
RING
OF KERRY CYCLE
(By Cora Carrigg, Kerry Recreation
and Sports Partnership)
WEEK 5 – Week Beginning May
12th – Basic Skills
Another 90km in the week
completed, if not more….Did you
ever imagine 5 weeks ago that you
would be cycling 90km in a week?....
Congratulations!!!
The focus of this week’s column is
some basic bike skills that should be
acquired and mastered, which will
help you to feel more confident with
your bike.
Looking Behind - Practice looking
over each shoulder until this can be
done without wobbling. This skill
should really become second nature
to you.
Hand Signals – Practice giving
these signals without wobbling or
loosing control. It is critical to signal
when slowing down, stopping or
turning left or right, so that drivers
and other cyclists are made aware of
your intentions.
Left Turn – extend left arm straight
out in the direction of the turn
Right Turn – extend right arm
straight out in the direction of the
turn
Stopping/Braking Signal – extend
your right arm directly out to the
right horizontally with palm facing
down and slowly wave the extended
arm up and down. Very many cyclists
also call “braking” or “stopping” when
doing this, especially if cycling as part
of a group where not all participants
can see your hand signal.
Braking – Practice using the brakes,
both together and separately. Be
aware of the different braking styles
needed in different situations, e.g. in
wet weather, avoid using the back
brake only, as this will cause a skid.
Changing Gears – Over time one
should become familiar with the
gear changes. It should become an
automatic reaction to change down
quickly through the gears before
stopping, as this will allow you to
move quickly on restart.
Water Bottle Pick Up – It is
important to be able to drink while
cycling, rather than lose momentum
by stopping the bike to drink,
especially on a 180km trip! Spend
time getting comfortable taking
one hand off the bars while shifting
your other hand closer to the centre
of the handle bars. Next make sure
you have enough speed so that you
can coast as you reach closer to the
bottle. Your leg closest to the hand
with which you reach for the bottle
should be fully extended while you
reach downwards. Try to keep the
motion smooth, as a jerking action,
may well cause you to miss the
bottle and affect your control of the
bike. So master the skill of reaching
downwards towards the bottle.
This
week’s
cycle
training
programme, according to the Ring
of Kerry Cycle Training programme
is below. A total of 100km to be
ridden….you know you can do it…
and if you can do more mileage fair
play dhuit!

BREAK THE HABIT
OF BEING YOURSELF!
It’s an odd title, I know, but it comes from
the work of Joe Dispenza (neuroscientist
and author). He believes that we can re-wire
our brains and bodies to make long lasting
changes in our lives. If you have continued
to do things in your life that you constantly say you don’t want to
do anymore you may find my Life Lounge on Wednesday May 28th
interesting, if not illuminating! If you can get the “old” you out of the
way, the path ahead becomes clear for the “new” you to emerge! It’s
exciting stuff!
My special Life Lounge guest this month will be Joan Barrett. I will be
chatting to her about how our childhood shapes our formative years
and how we can change our old worn out “stories” of the past.
To make long lasting changes you have to stop being the YOU that
continues to play out old behaviours and patterns. The great news is
that you already have exactly what you need to do this – your mind!
One of the ways in which we can begin to do this is to create an inner
reality that becomes the place from which you live your life and make
your decisions. Once you are no longer simply RE-acting to life but
making conscious choices based on your desires, you experience
LIBERATION, FREEDOM and HAPPINESS!
Join Joan and myself on Wednesday 28th May – this conversation will
only happen once! I can’t wait! Reserve your place NOW by calling
066 9766374 or emailing me at [email protected].
Entry is €15.00 – payable on the night! (Refreshments included!).

We travelled to Ardfert on Wednesday last
and were defeated by the home side. Missing
quite a few regulars and being at a numerical
disadvantage for almost the entire game, this
was a creditable performance by our lads.
We trailed by four points, 0 – 7 to 1 – 8, at half
time. Top scorer on the night was seventeen
year old Eoin Ross who finished with a tally of
0 – 7. Other players to get their name on the
score sheet were Thomas O`Rourke 0 – 3, Daniel
O`Carroll 0 - 2 and Martin O`Connor 0 – 1.
Our next outing is in the North Kerry
Championship in Ballyduff on this Friday May
16th when we take on Causeway in the Quarter
Final. Throw in is at 7.30pm
The following fifteen players lined out for
Lady`s Walk in Ardfert.

Sympathy: A dark cloud passed over the
parish last Sunday afternoon when news filtered
through of the passing of Jimmy O’Sullivan. A
gentleman of the highest order, Jimmy will be
sorely missed in these parts. A farmer by trade,
Jimmy, along with wife Joan, ran a successful
guesthouse for many years. He had a keen interest
in Kerry football and he paid a particular interest
in St Pats football. His three sons Seamus, Tommy
& Derek were members of the 1994 winning
Junior Championship team and twenty years on,
Derek is still playing senior football with Jimmy’s
grandson Michael! He loved conversation and
had a huge interest in young people and was
always on hand to help or to advise. His main
interest was greyhounds and he has good success
down the years with numerous dogs with the
“Derrymore” prefix to their names. On behalf of
everyone in the club, we would like to extend
our deepest sympathies to his wife Joan, sons
Seamus, Tommy, Derek, his daughter Anne and all
his grandchildren and extended family. The club
would also like to sympathise with the family &
friends of Brendan O’Connell from Curragraigue
who died tragically whilst performing his duties
as an outrider for the Cycle Against Suicide last
week.
May They Rest In Peace.

Keel GAA:
Keel played Glenflesk in the fourth round of
the County league in wintery conditions in
Keel on Saturday evening. Mike O’Connor
scored the opening point for Keel before
Glenflesk responded with two fine points
from Jeff O’Donoghue. The game was evenly
balance for the rest of the first half with Aaron
Cahillane, Shane Prendiville and another from
Mike 0’Connor being matched by two frees
from Dara R...oche. Jeff O’Donoghue and Dara
Roche kicked the last two points of the half and
Glenflesk led by 0-7 to 0-4.
Keel brought on Liam O’Shea at half time but
Glenflesk continued their dominance. Another
point from Dara Roche and two from Lee
O’Donoghue extended their lead to six and
the home side looked in trouble as their wide
count was rising. Tom Ladden and Martin Burke
were starting to get on top in midfield and a
Mike O’Connor free, two points from Gary
Sayers and a point each from Liam O’Shea
and Martin Burke cut the deficit to a point. Lee
O’Donoghue scored Glenflesk’s first point in 18
minutes to push it out to a two point game but
Keel were in ascendancy around the middle of
the field and Liam O’Shea scored his second
point to again leave a point between the teams.

they deserved but unfortunately time ran out
on them. Keel 0-10 Glenflesk 0-11

Coiste na nOg: U12 (A) Boys: Ballymacelligott
5-22 Milltown-Castlemaine 5-5.
Played on Sunday evening 11/05/14. The boys
were competing in their final game of this
league. They were chasing their fourth win in
a row and tore into the game from the throw
in. Darragh Leen was impressive in mid field
and lay the foundations for many scores. The
boys were very dominant in every position and
led 5-10 to 1-4 at half time. Jon Lowe had an
impressive game at half back and we had the
luxury of making positional changes such was
our dominance. The final score showed the hard
work the lads are putting in. Well done to all.
U12 – Boys. Ballymac Gold Team 5-21 Milltown/
C’maine1-00
Played in Ballymac last Sunday evening we
were too strong on the night and came away
with a comfortable victory.Phase 2 of U12’s
begins next Sunday evening, no fixtures to date
but keep an eye on web-site.
Our u 12s travelled to near neighbours Currow
on Sunday 4 May in round 4 of the county
league. Currow A 1-7 Ballymac A 5-19.
A comprehensive victory for the boys who ran
our deserved winners. Conditions were windy
and the lads played with the breeze in the first
half. They soon got to grips with conditions and
played intelligently throughout. The pass and
run game employed paid dividends with some
great scores. Half time Ballymac 3-9. Currow 0-4
We expected at sterner test from Currow in the
second half but in fairness to the lads they didn’t
leave Currow get any foothold in the game.
Again some terrific passages of play from the
boys who are improving with each game. Jack
Tobin is becoming a very competent keeper
and Bryan Godley showed some good finishes
in front of goal. All in all 1 to 13 can be proud of
themselves.
Currow B 5 -6. Ballymac B 5- 10. Another fine
display by our younger team. The training is
paying off and they are putting some great
plays together. Our defence was well on top.
And the forwards made Currow pay time and
again. Great link play is a feature of all the hard
work these boys are putting in every Tuesday
and Friday A great squad display from the
boys Well done to all !
ACADEMY: Well done on a great performance
by all our rising stars at Academy on Sunday
morning. The U6 boys who performed
particularly well included Ryan Harper, Seadhna
O’Briain, Shane Brosnan, Conor McCarthy,
Gearoid O’Connor and Daniel Moriarty. The
U8 boys were also in action with Jack Joy,
Martin McKivergan, Gearoid Healy and Ciaran
O’Connell displaying some great skill and
enthusiasm. A fantastic effort was also made
by all the girls in attendance. Keep up the great
work.
Our U10 boys took part in the first Go Games
Castleisland District Blitz hosted by the
Desmonds. We had two teams taking part
playing games against Desmonds, Cordal,
Scartaglin and Currow. Those who impressed
on the night were Donal Daly, James Kenny,
Sean Rice, Aidan Horgan, Maurice O Connell
and Niall Collins. . Ballymac U10’s & U8’s travel
to Ardfert next Sunday at 10.45 to play them.
U8’s will travel to Castleisland this Thursday
night at 7pm in Round 1 of Castleisland district
blitz.

windy and add into the mix tough opposition
and you have a hard nights work ahead of
you. But fair play to the girls they battled hard
and never gave up. Final score Causeway 1-5
Killmallock 4-4. The girls should be very proud
of themselves as they won their 4 league
matches to top their group. Causeway 3-7 to
Galbally 1-5, Causeway 7-6 to Na Piarsaigh 2-2
Causeway 5-9 to Treaty Gaels 3-5
Causeway 5-5 to Ballybrown 2-11
This is a fantastic achievement by a great bunch
of girls both on and off the field. All of these girls
are U16 again next year except for our brilliant
captain Olivia Stack. This time last year we had

pupils from the Spa national school on the occasion of thier first holy communion
Fenit samphires: U17s had another match in the league last
weekend after our U16 cup semi final on that day had to be postponed.
Our opponents were Castlegregory on a desperately windy day. A very
strong westerly wind blew in from the sea down the pitch and we had
the advantage in the first half. We had a number of chances but until the
30th minute we failed to convert. Eventually we scored when Thomas
Dwyer scored after their keeper parried a ferocious effort from Bobby
O’Regan. Bobby was dangerous from long range efforts but after 40
minutes it was Sean Higgins who put us 2 nil up at the far post from a
good cross from Thomas Lenihan but that was it (2-0) at half time. The
second half was completely different from our point of view and we had
a lot more defending to do. With 10 minutes to go a ball fell to one of
their midfielders outside our box, he connected perfectly, kept it down
and it rocketed into our net leading to a few minutes of real pressure
which we just about handled – In the end we won 2-1 so well done to all
the 14 players on the day for their great efforts in galeforce conditions.
Thanks too to the Castlegregory team and mentors for such a good
game.
Junior Championship Quarter Final Replay: Churchill made
the long trip to Dromid to take on the locals in the replay of the Junior
Championship quarter final and came away empty handed. Whether it
was the long trip, or the heavy pitch, Churchill never got going in the
match, save for a 10 minute purple patch in the second half. If truth be
told the match was over at half time, as Churchill failed to trouble the
scoreboard operator for the entire first half. In fact, it took Churchill 37
minutes to register their first score. In their defence, they were playing
into a very strong wind and Dromid used the wind very wisely, by
playing quick ball in to Declan O’Sullivan, who lined out at full-forward
and ended up as their top scorer with 1-5.
Full Time score: Dromid Pearses 1-07 Churchill 0-06
Thanks: The club would like to thank its supporters who made the
long trip to Dromid for the match. The vocal support was very much
in evidence. Thanks also to the Churchill U8s (and their mentors) who
took part in a very entertaining half time match against their Dromid
counterparts.
Communion:The club would like to extend its congratulations to all in
the parish who made their First Holy Communion last weekend.
U-14 Division 1 Semi-Final: Churchill emerged victorious after a
nail-biting Co. League Semi Final in JP O’Sullivan Park, Killorglin last
Wednesday evening. Just like their Senior counterparts on the previous
Saturday, extra time was required, but on this occasion, the Churchill
boys produced a Lazarus-like performance to ensure a replay wouldn’t
be required.Final Score: Churchill 5-9 Laune Rangers 3-12 after extra
time
Churchill probably just about deserved the victory, and their neversay-die attitude was a sight to behold. They gained revenge on their
conquerors from Feile in what was a very sporting game. Both teams left
the pitch to well-deserved applause.
The team now plays Austin Stacks in the Division 1 Co. League Final in
Blennerville on this Wed, 14th May at 7:30. We ask as many people as
possible to come along to show their support for the team.

Christina O Shea, Priests – Fr. Michael Hussey PP castlegregory and Fr.
John Buckley PP Annascaul.
GAA: Annascaul defeated Ardfert in great sporting conditions at home
last Sunday on a score-line of 0-16 to 2-09.
The scoring opened with a point from Ardfert’s Cian Hussey in the
first minute of the game, followed with a free from Annascaul’s James
Crean. Further points were exchanged from Ardfert’s John Galvin and
Annascaul’s Jason Hickson, and a superb save from the home side goalie
Tommy Pierce left the sides level at the end of the first quarter mark.
Annascaul’s James Crean pointed from a free in the sixteenth minute
before Ardfert’s Cian Hussey gave the away side a two point lead from
a goal. Annascaul dominated the remainder of the quarter with points
from Aidan Crean, Fionn Coakley, James Crean, Emmet Kennedy and
Jason Hickson. During the two minutes of injury time Ardfert’s Cian
Hussey and Darren Wallace narrowed the margin to leave the half- time
score of Annascaul 0-8 to Ardfert’s 1-04.
An exciting entrance to the second half ensued with a penalty awarded
to Ardfert in the opening minutes converted by Michael Moloney to put
another goal on the board. Brandon Barrett quickly followed with a point
for Ardfert before a change was forced when Ardfert’s Michael Moloney
was black carded and replaced by Brian Moloney.
A free for both sides saw John Galvin and Jason Hickson slotting over,
before a shrewd pass from Annascaul’s James Farrell to James Crean
saw the ball over the bar. With five minutes to go and three points up
Annascaul would have thought they were home and dry but a hungry
Ardfert looking for a share of the spoils slotted over three points to level
the game at the final stages. However, a Jason Hickson free insured
Annascaul’s victory on the day with the full time sore of Annascaul 0-16
to Ardfert’s 2-09.

take full advantage and should have being
leading by more than 4 points at half time. Half

This game turned about ten minutes into this
half, when with an attacking free which went
very wrong resulting in a Skellig Ranger goal.
We had a player sent off shortly after this with
a second yellow. Try as we might we could not
get the scores that were needed to win the
match. S. Rangers did enough to see them over

SOCCER GIRLS UNDER 12 & 15
On Sunday, we had the U12 & U15 Girls Soccer
County Finals in Mastergeeha Soccer Pitch.
In the Under 12 Girls we had three teams
who played in round robin format with both
Kenmare & Listowel defeating Duagh/Lyre & in
the final game Listowel retained their county
title to win the gold medals with victory over
Kenmare who received the silver medals &
Duagh/Lyre the bronze.
The U15 final between Beaufort & Duagh/
Lyre produced a classic with plenty of goals.
In first half Duagh/Lyre playing with the aid of
strong wind to lead at half time 5-1 & in the
second half Beaufort scored 5 goals to lead
with 5 mins left. From the kick off Duagh/
Lyre equalised from penalty spot & with 30
seconds left a brilliant shot gave Beaufort the
county title & gold medals on a score line of
7-6 with an unlucky Duagh/Lyre side getting
the silver. There was excellent displays from
all the players on both sides so well done to
all for giving us such an epic final & best of
luck to Beaufort who will represent Kerry at
the provincial finals & also Listowel in the U12

REPORTS: (U13) Kerry Cup Semi Final ;
Park Fc 1-0 Listowel Celtic,
On Thursday evening our u13A team played
Listowel Celtic in what was a very competitive
cup semi final.Great credit must go to both sets
of players as this game was battled for in the
best way possible, that is that soccer was the
real winner. Both teams played some very nice
periods of soccer with possession maintained, and
creative and imaginative scoring opportunities
resulting from, patience and intelligent build
up play. Although chances were frequent only
one goal was scored due to excellent and brave
goalkeeping from both keepers. The goal when it
came was an end product from a great Park team
move. The final pass was slipped through from
Fergal to Sebastian, ”Seb” not unlike a young
Messi did the rest, skill, control, technique and
class finished into the bottom corner of the net.
. Bravery and skill were his contributions to win.

Best of luck to the Kerry U21’s who commence
action this weekend in the Aisling McGing
Championship. This is the second year of the
U21 competition with Kerry fielding also in 2013.
Kerry’s first game is a tough assignment away
to Cork on Sunday at 2.30, venue TBC. Cork are
the current champions defeating Galway in the
final last year. Both teams also met last year in
the group stages in Beaufort with Cork pulling
away in the last 15 minutes of the game. Kerry
will be looking to strong & experienced players
such as Eilis & Brid O’Connor, Kate O’Sullivan to
shore up defence. Senior stars Marie Quirke &
Megan O’Connell are versatile players who can
play midfield & forwards which will give Kerry an
added dimension. In addition Aoife & Deirdre
Geaney & Claire O’Sullivan will give depth to
the Kerry attack. Kerry will be captained by
Deirdre Geaney & are managed by Connie
O’Connor ably assisted by James O’Connell,
Joanne Brosnan & Paudie Moroney. Kerry have

LEARNER DRIVERS - SIX MONTH RULE
How long you need to hold a learner permit before
you can apply for a test?.
What is it?.
First-time learner permit holders (in certain
categories) must wait six months after the date
of issue of the particular licence category before
they can sit their driving test. In the past, some
people took the test shortly after getting their first
learner permit and research has shown that the
more practice and experience a person gets, the
better a driver they become.
This is particularly important if you have added a
licence category to your permit as it is the date the
category was added that is relevant not the date
that your permit was issued.
It is your responsibility to ensure that
you have checked your permit details and that
you are eligible to sit the test. If you apply and turn
up to sit your test and you are not eligible then
you will lose your fee and have to re apply. Who does it apply to:
It applies to first-time learner permit holders for:
Cars, motorcycles, works vehicles (eg, tractors,
JCBs)
Exemptions: Where you opt to take Progressive
Access (where you have held the lower category
for a minimum of 2 years) from category A1 to
A2 or Category A2 to A and wish to take a driving
test, you do not need to wait six months to sit the
driving test.
A holder of a current full driving licence from
another country (jurisdiction) for more than six
months is exempt from this requirement, provided
you forward a current original driving licence and
a letter of entitlement from the relevant licensing
authority in that country to the:
Customer Service Manager Driver Testing Section, Road Safety Authority,
Moy Valley Business Park,
Ballina, Co. Mayo
[email protected] , 1890 40 60 40
Applicants are advised to forward their original
licence by registered post.
A letter of entitlement refers to a copy of a driver
record with details of name, address, date of birth,
driver number, date of expiry of licence and class
of licence to include details of what that class
refers to.

How do I know when my six months are
up??
If you look at your learner permit you will see
the code 991 on the restriction column and then
also the date that the permit was issued for your
particular licence category - You need to add 6
months to this date of issue.

THE MIRACLE PRAYER
Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours. This time
I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus
and place it within your heart where your Father sees it.
Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine.
Amen.
Say this prayer three times for three days and your
favour will be granted. Never known to fail.
Must promise publication of prayer.
