NILS MŐNKEMEYER viola
VADYM KHOLODENKO piano
We are thrilled to announce our signing of Nils
Mönkemeyer (UK, Scandinavia ex Fin, Australia).
Winner of the International Yuri Bashmet Competition
in Moscow (2006) and the Parkhouse Award in London,
he is renowned for his artistic brilliance and innovative
programming and is energetically engaged with
expanding the repertoire; commissioning new works,
championing contemporary pieces and unearthing
neglected gems.
We warmly welcome 2013 Cliburn winner Vadym
Kholodenko for worldwide management. The 28-year
old triumphed at the quadrennial competition; not only
winning First Prize but also prizes for Chamber Music
and “Best performance of a new work”. His exhilarating
and powerful performances “showed the guts of a true
superartist” (San Francisco Classical Voice) whilst his
virtuosity and honed technique belies his age.
A committed chamber musician he is a member of
the Julia Fischer Quartet with whom he has performed
extensively in Europe. He comes to London twice in
Irène Zandel
the spring for performances at the Wigmore Hall: on
10 April with the Heath Quartet and on 14 June for quintets with Baiba Skride,
Brett Dean and Alban Gerhardt. Other chamber music and double concerto
partners include Julia Fischer, Vilde Frang, Alina Ibragimova, Veronica Eberle,
Sabine Meyer, Nicola Benedetti and Augustin Hadelich.
Current solo highlights include a European tour with the Yomiuri Nippon
Symphony Orchestra/Cambreling performing the Bartók Viola Concerto,
following performances in Tokyo earlier in the year.
An exclusive Sony Classical artist, Nils Mönkemeyer has already released
five critically acclaimed, award-winning CDs: “Mönkemeyer shows an
understanding of Bach’s music that is obviously born of the study and reflection
of many years.” The Strad (“Bach und Mehr”).

“The gold-medal winner, Vadym Kholodenko, sealed his triumph with a stunning
performance of the Prokofiev Third Piano Concerto and an elegantly detailed
Mozart Concerto No 21…The music was both boldly and elegantly shaped.
Kholodenko’s own cadenzas were replete with witty side steps of melody and
harmony” Dallas News

During his long tenure as Chief Conductor and more
recently as Artistic Director of Chicago’s Grant Park Music
Festival, Kalmar has shaped its artistic vision making it one Jay Moreau
of the most pioneering US festivals. This season he highlights
twentieth century American and British composers including George Antheil, Randall
Thompson, David Diamond, John Adams, James Macmillan and conducts a world
première by Kenji Bunch and Elgar’s Oratorio The Kingdom.
Kalmar’s passion for American repertoire is explored in his latest CD for Pentatone
of works by Copland, Walter Piston and George Antheil, recorded live with the
Oregon Symphony where he is Music Director.
He celebrates the RTVE Symphony Orchestra’s 50th season where he is Music
Director, conducting works by Shostakovich (Symphony No 10, Song of the
Forests) and Verdi’s Requiem.

EUGENE TZIGANE
Regularly praised for his insightful interpretations,
Tzigane achieves a high rate of re-invitation. This
spring he makes a keenly anticipated return to the
Lahti Symphony to conduct Strauss Ein Heldenleben
and conducts his fifth programme with the Tampere
Philharmonic.
He is Artistic Partner of the Fort Worth Symphony
Orchestra, a three-year residency which includes
Van Cliburn
performances and recordings of a Prokofiev Piano
Concerto cycle for release on Harmonia Mundi. Kholodenko’s busy North
American schedule has included concerts with the Philadelphia Orchestra,
Indianapolis Symphony and at the Aspen Music Festival, whilst further afield
he performs with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra/Harth-Bedoya (SaintSaëns), Malmö Symphony/Han-Na Chang (Mozart), RTVE Orchestra in Madrid/
Harth-Bedoya (Beethoven) and Tchaikovsky Symphony/Fedoseyev in Zurich

Philharmonic Orchestra for the third time including a performance at the Royal
Festival Hall with Pinchas Zukerman. First time invitations see him conduct the
Adelaide Symphony, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and the Grant Park
Music Festival.
Meanwhile at the helm of the Solistes Européens Luxembourg (Chief
Conductor), he brings the orchestra back to the Cologne Philharmonie for a
programme including Schumann Symphony No 4 whilst other performances in
Luxembourg focus on Brahms with soloists Gerhard Oppitz, and Renaud and
Gautier Capuçon.

QUARTET
Haydn disc is Gramophone
Editor’s Choice
Adding to a host of recording accolades, the Doric
String Quartet’s exquisite double-CD of Haydn Op
20 Quartets has been greeted with enthusiasm in
the press: “Thoughtfulness is uppermost. Allied to
precision in articulation is a flexibility in the scansion
and shaping of phrases, of notes timed through a George Garnier
remarkable understanding of rubato, of a range of
expressive resilience that gives even the smallest of episodes in a long line
their own character without distorting structure or disturbing flow… Hold your
breath for the rest” Editor’s Choice Gramophone.
The Quartet is featured in two concerts at the Aldeburgh Festival along with
performances at the Ryedale, Carinthischer Sommer, Hitzacher, Delft and
Zoom! Festivals. Recently returned from their annual North American tour, the
Quartet travels to Israel and the Musica Viva Festival in Australia.
Stefan Jackiw travels to Australia
in May for a 9-concert tour with

His recent US recital tour included performances in Chicago and Washington,
drawing high praise from the Washington Post: “Jackiw threw himself into the
music as if nothing else mattered and turned in the kind of playing you always
hope for at a concert but rarely hear. It was an absolutely spectacular
performance, run through with urgent and often unsettling beauty.”
AVI AVITAL
Artist-in-Residence at Zurich Opera, de la Salle’s
latest instalment of her Rachmaninov Piano
Concerto cycle saw her perform Concerto No 4
under Fabio Luisi, and she completes the series with
Concerto No 3 in July.
VIENNA PIANO TRIO

CHLOË HANSLIP tours with the

conducts a triumphant Salome in Bonn
Guest conducting engagements include the Orchestre
National de Belgique, Norwegian Radio, a tour with the
South Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra including a
performance at the Concertgebouw (5 April), and a
return to Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música
for a typically eclectic programme of Schreker and
Weill Symphony No 2.
Chloë Hanslip’s ongoing pursuit of lesserknown works of the violin repertoire sees her
follow a recent performance of Delius’ Violin
Concerto in Tokyo with Mohammed Fairouz’s
Violin Concerto ‘Al-Andalus’ in the USA.
Veerle Vercauteren
In his seventh season as Chief Conductor of the
Beethoven Orchestra Bonn, Blunier continues his survey of Mahler Symphonies with
No 3 in May. With Beethoven ever their core repertoire, the partnership records the
third Symphony for the next instalment of their cycle for Darbringhaus und Grimm.
On the opera front, Blunier conducts the triumphant new production of Salome in
Bonn, “an almost divine Richard Strauss – transparent, modern with brilliantly expressive
fortissimo... a 5-star evening without equal” Der Operfreund.
“Hanslip clearly loves this music, for hers was a strong and passionate
account.” Wigmore Hall Recital Classical Source
Brautigam’s cycle of complete solo
works by Beethoven for BIS continues to
collect superlative reviews. BBC Music Marco Borggreve
Magazine recently favoured Brautigam’s
interpretations on fortepiano in a comparison of Beethoven cycles: “There’s no
point making a list of highlights as there are no weak performances here, just
choose a favourite Beethoven Sonata and hear it refreshed, revitalised and
illuminated…these performances are far too good to be pigeonholed as ‘for
specialists only’”.
London audiences have a chance to hear Ronald Brautigam on fortepiano at
LSO St Lukes on Thursday 22 March when he performs a programme of Haydn and
Beethoven sonatas in the BBC’s “Haydn Plus” series.
Adam Walker
performs with the
Baltimore Symphony
Following performances with the Seattle
Symphony in January, virtuoso flautist
Kaupo Kikkas
Adam Walker returns to the US for concerts
with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra
under Marin Alsop. He revisits Kevin Puts’ Flute Concerto; a piece he premiered
at the Cabrillo Festival in 2013 and will also record the work for release on Naxos.
European highlights include a recital at the Newbury Spring Festival in a new
collaboration with harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani, as well as concerts at the
Utrecht Chamber Music Festival.
ANOUSHKA SHANKAR coming “HOME”
Her latest recording venture features Indian
classical ragas and sees Anoushka Shankar in a
reflective mood, returning to her roots by infusing
her own improvisations and compositions into
classical ragas created by her father. HOME is
released on Deutsche Grammophon in May.

In December the Sitkovetsky Trio was delighted to welcome British cellist Richard
Harwood to the ensemble. The Trio is excited about this new stage in its career
and looks forward to a very busy spring. A major highlight of the coming months
is a debut tour of the USA which includes concerts in Washington DC and San
Francisco and a performance with the Friends of Chamber Music Lincoln Center
in New York (24 April). Forthcoming European highlights include returns to the
Wigmore Hall and the Hamburg Laeiszhalle as well as performances at the Auditori
Barcelona, Wiltshire Music Centre and the Frederiksværk Festival.
ROBERT SPANO
conducts Danish National
Symphony
Passionate in his exploration of contemporary
music, Robert Spano returns to Europe to
conduct the Danish National Symphony in
the world premiere of Søren Nils Eichberg
Symphony No 3 together with Beethoven Piano
Concerto No 1 (Stephen Hough).
As Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony
Orchestra, Spano is tireless in his quest
to broaden audiences and has created Angela Morriss
imaginative settings in which to present music,
such as the “Theater of a Concert” format involving lighting and stage
direction. This setting will be used for the world premiere of Christopher
Theofanidis’ ambitious new piece, Creation Oratorio in April. Atlanta season
soloists include Midori, Lynn Harrell, Jessica Rivera, Jean-Yves Thibaudet and
Bronfman.
Spano has devised the 2015 Aspen Music Festival where he is Music Director
around “Dreams of Travel”, celebrating musical works enriched by other
cultures. His own programmes include contemporary operas by Stephen
Stucky and Christopher Theofanidis along with a semi-staged performance
of Aida, whilst orchestral repertoire features Mahler Symphony No 6 and
Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade.
MIGUEL HARTHBEDOYA conducts
Higdon world premiere at
Santa Fe Opera
Following his memorable performances at Santa
Fe Opera of Golijov’s Ainadamar, Miguel HarthBedoya returns to the house this summer to
conduct the world premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s
Cold Mountain based on Charles Frazier’s awardwinning novel set during the American Civil War
(1, 5, 14, 17, 22 Aug).
Bell Soto
In his second season as Chief Conductor of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra
Harth-Bedoya conducts a Brahms cycle and continues to record more
South American repertoire (Naxos). He returns to the Helsinki Philharmonic
where he is a regular guest and to the RTVE Orchestra in Madrid closing the
season in an all-Beethoven programme with Vadym Kholodenko as soloist.
Harth-Bedoya has maintained a unique relationship with the Los Angeles
Philharmonic since his first visit in 1998. This was clearly recognised by the LA
Times in his recent concert of Prokofiev Cinderella Suite and Chopin Piano
Concerto with Emmanual Ax, remarking on their “special chemistry”.
