FOREWORD
Several Reasons of
Choosing DongCheng
NO.1 A Feast for Eyes along
Central Axis
The urban spatial distribution of ancient Beijing is a
centripetal zygomorphy with royal palaces as the core.
The most outstanding achievement is the 7.8 kilometer
axis that stretches all the way from Yongdingmen at south
to Drum and Bell Tower at north. Mr. Liang Sicheng, a
top Chinese architect, once highly praised it: “the longest
and greatest south-to-north axis in the world about 8
kilometers through the city creates city’s exclusively
splendid order”. The axis serves as a basis of the uneven
in the back and forth and median zygomorphic figure or
spatial distribution, with its consistent south-to-north
scale, making Beijing’s grand and magnificent spirit.
NO.2 The History Engraved
on the Emperor City
Passing through the gateway of the Forbidden City,
a gust of ancient royal sense will blow against your
face. When you are smitten by the magnificent
imperial complex, the excellent stone inscription
and wood carving, you might wonder the agitation
and changeable situation in the palace. Dongcheng
District is dotted with magnificent historic relics,
such as Imperial Ancestral Shrine, Altar of Land
and Grain, Temple of Heaven and Temple of Earth.

Dongsi Street
A commercial street stretching from Dongdan to
Dongsi, it gathers fashion brands from across the
world and thus features a high concentration of
exotic clothing cultures. There are specialty stores
of Chinese and foreign famous sporting and casual
clothing brands, boutiques selling avant-garde Korean
clothes and accessories, and stores dedicated to import and export clothes, as well as shops dealing in
personalized apparel and ethnic costumes. Each store distinguishes itself from others in decoration and
commodities. Even a glance at their distinctive facades is an amazing enjoyment.

Youngor
As Youngor’s flagship store in Beijing, the
three-floor shop features a pleasant shopping
environment and provides a complete range of
clothing products. The first and second floors
sell ready-made clothes like Western-style
suits, shirts, leather jackets, and pants, while
the third floor offers tailored costumes. It
offers various options in terms of fabric, both
Chinese-made and imported, and its products
feature regular style, high quality, and
affordable prices. Therefore, it has become the
primary choice for many who buy Westernstyle suits and shirts.
Dongsi Street was called Cross Road during the Yuan

Dynasty (1271-1368). Later, four wooden archways

were constructed at the four corners of the Cross Road
Station
in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Because the street
nestled east to the Imperial Palace, those archways
were collectively known as Dongsi Archways (Four Archways in the East), and the area was thus called
Dongsi. Today, Dongsi refers to the block where Dongsi South Street, Dongsi North Street, Dongsi West
Street, and Chaoyangmennei Street meet. As a protected historic block in Beijing, it still maintains some
well-preserved hutongs and quadrangle residences. Scrolling down the street, one can often encounter
old residences and mansions that initially belonged to aristocrats and princes. Meanwhile, along with
the development of Dongsi commercial area, countless modern shopping malls and boutiques have been
found here. Traditional culture and modern commerce coexist harmoniously in one block, and perhaps
such a scene is only commonplace in Beijing.
Tanmujiang
Tanmujiang products boast unique, exquisite
designs and are popular especially in modern
times when people advocate greener, environmentfriendly lifestyles. Its wooden combs, crafts, and

Theaters and theatrical performances are significant indicators of the prosperity of a country’s cultural
construction. Over a long period of development, a variety of theaters have been established in
central Beijing’s Dongcheng District. The most famous include Poly Theater that focuses on classical
performing arts, Capital Theater, a cradle of Chinese drama, and China Children’s Art Theater tailored
for kids. Besides, those less-known theatrical establishments such as Dongcheng Library Theater and
NTC Pioneer Theater are also where the audience can enjoy the charm of arts.
Poly Theater
Known as a time-honored theater in Beijing, Poly
Theater is considered a shining gem in local culture
market. The elegantly-decorated theater demonstrates
an indescribable dignity. Despite their old ages, its
lighting and audio facilities remain brilliant and
impressive. No wonder such a tasteful theater focuses
on classical performing arts, such as symphony, ballad,
opera, drama, and large-scale evening parties. Due to
the high-end artistic environment, cultural activities, and considerate services it provides, the theater has
won high praise in Beijing’s performance circle.

of Chinese drama. Despite its location in
downtown Beijing, the theater enjoys a
tranquil environment and features a quiet but
meaningful ambience. So far, it has become
a milestone of Beijing culture. Over the past
decades, numerous classical dramas, such
as Teahouse , The Thunderstorm , and The
First Building under Heaven , were staged
in the small theater imbued with a Soviet
Union architectural style. The theater has
realized countless achievements in the history
of Chinese drama and made remarkable
contributions to the development and

winning itself the reputation as a “state-class

Life in Elegant Teahouses
According to The Classic of Tea by Lu Yu, a scientist in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), Shennong, a legendary
monarch during prehistoric period, was the first to make tea a drink. This proves that it has been a long
history since Chinese people began to drink tea. Along with the prosperity of commerce, teahouses gradually
won popularity in ancient China and became an important part of the nation’s tea culture. Back to the Qing
Dynasty, Beijing concentrated countless teahouses. People from all walks of life, including princes, aristocrats,
descendants of privileged families, and ordinary people, liked to relax themselves at teahouses during spare
time. There, they not only drank tea, but enjoyed their lives.
Wuyutai Teahouse
Established in 1887, the time-honored teahouse
has had a history of more than a century. As
soon as one steps into the traditional-style
teahouse, he can smell the light fragrance
of tea. A variety of tea, including flower tea,
green tea, and oolong tea, are placed orderly

of many elderly Beijingers. They often soak
some jasmine tea with a big teapot or jar and
spend their daytimes drinking tea in leisure.

Imbued with artistic ambience, the coffee shop

sipping coffee. Particularly, in the rear of the café
is a reading room that provides a plethora of books.
Customers can either read them in the coffee shop or
buy them back home. Luckier guests may encounter
celebrated writers who frequent the café. This
explains the popularity of the small coffee store.
Nestling in a nondescript hutong, Treescape
Gallery is a coffee shop without eye-catching
signboard and neon sign, but just stands quietly
alongside a century-old locust tree. However,
its inner space looks enormous and is elegantly
decorated, with a strong artistic atmosphere. The
coffee shop is often packed with customers, but all
of them lower their voices to avoid disturbing others. There, one can kill his afternoons reading a book,
surfing the internet, or merely staying in a daze.
