- Welcome to Winter 2016!
As a Falls Creek veteran recently confided
to me, “Stu... all winters are great, some
just have more snow than others.” I
couldn’t agree more, winters are GREAT!
But boy, wasn’t summer an absolute
cracker, and next year is already shaping up
to beat it (Congrats to the marketing and
events team!).
Insofar as Winter 2016 is concerned, we’re
not hedging our bets, but rather we’re
pumped for a cracking season! A very well
researched and balanced meteorological
forecast for the upcoming season stated
“Don’t get too excited by early snowfalls,
or indeed sell your skis if winter starts with
no cover: two of the best seasons on record
- 1956 and 1981 - had no snow at all at
the start of June, while two of the poorest
seasons - 2006 and 1965 - had 20cm and
60cm, respectively, of snow on the ground
before the Queen’s Birthday weekend.
Early-season cover isn’t always the guide
we might think it is. But... there are always
exceptions to the rules.”
The schedule of events this season is
nothing short of block buster. There’s
something for everyone, just check out the
Events schedule at www.fallscreek.com.au.

in the Wombats Rambler… gunning for
the trophy. Don’t forget to check out the
new food and beverage options across the
mountain. If early indications are anything
to go by - Falls Creek restauranteurs have

the ‘foodies’ mountain, bar none!
Look out for the new signage. Installations
include new road signs, shuttle stops and
information that can be gleaned from the
new shuttle shelters at the Village Bowl and
Slalom Plaza, then integrated into the User
Guide. The interactive web based service is
linked to the signage program and provides
‘in resort’ guests (and locals) the opportunity
to have at their finger-tips, either via 4G
or downloadable through a PDF, access to
everything there is available in the resort. Go
to www.fallsuserguide.com, save the site to
your home screen (via a smart phone). The
application will load with the Falls Creek
icon and you’re covered. When in resort, all
signage has QR (Quick Response) codes,
that via either ‘wallet’ on iPhone (or QR
reader apps), or with Android phones, use
Google Play with its scanning options, or
use the built in scanner, to get immediate
information on your location. Just scan the
QR… you’re in business.

all the way through to processing, via a
major upgrade to the waste water treatment
plant. The completion of our new waste
recycling facility will see an unprecedented
increase in recyclables and reduce landfill
being taking taken off the mountain.
I’ll take this opportunity to recognise
the great work of the Infrastructure and
Mountain Response division in achieving a
tremendous outcome for the village.
The season will kick off with the “Snow

SNOW-CAPPED COMEDY
Queen’s Birthday
Weekend
T
he traditional Queen’s Birthday
weekend has always been a hoot.
The skis were tuned; last year’s outfit
dragged out of the cupboard and the chains
- “now where did I put those chains? - they’ve
got to be in the shed here somewhere!”
Anyway, we got organised and headed
up to the snow - for the first slide of the
season. It was always a good weekend
- catching up with old friends and meeting
the new team on the mountain. Lots of fun
and laughs over a coldie or a red.
Well, not much has changed. The fun
continues and you can bet your bottom
dollar that the team will be making as
much snow as they can and everyone will
be getting ready for what is sure to be a
good season. Then, as a bonus we have a
Melbourne International Comedy Festival
Roadshow event, Snow Capped Comedy.
Pack your fluffy ears and granny’s thermals
and prepare for some après-ski madness on
the Queen’s birthday weekend with three
raucous shows featuring comedy’s coolest
comedians.
The first show will take place Saturday
evening. On Sunday afternoon there will
be a kids’ show and then another show on
Sunday evening - all taking place at The
Man. NB: Licensing regulations require all
children to be accompanied by an adult.
Add to this entertainment some fabulous
pre-show Tapas Tasting at Diana Lodge,
or a scrumptious pre-show dinner at Elk
or either of the other great restaurants in
town and we have all the makings of one
of those great fun-time Opening Weekends
we are all used to.

IT’S PARK TIME
Pre-season Write-Up
T
he weather is getting colder and
in any other part of the country
you would be curled up next to the
heater cursing the cold outside… but not
here. There’s a certain excitement in the
air at Falls Creek as the temps are starting
to drop and the snow is starting to surface
in the forecast. The Park Rangers have
woken from their summer hibernation and
are chomping at the bit to build or rake
something.
Falls Terrain Parks is excited to introduce two
new full-time and one new-part time members
to the team! Shane Doyle is already a weapon
on the park rake as he has had three years of
practice as a Falls Creek Ski Lifts operator and
filled the 2015 part-time role. Eugene Campbell
is no stranger to the Terrain Park as a seasoned
snowboard instructor and freestyle competitor,
showcasing his talents in last season’s Storm
the Castle Slopestyle competition. Meagan
Ferguson, also a past Falls Creek Snowsports
instructor, is helping the crew out part-time
this season and representing the freestyle skiers
out there. Marcel van der Veer and Travis Tait,
both returning Park Crew, complete the team
both having recently arrived back in Australia
after fine-tuning their skills working in Canada
(lucky guys!).
The Falls Freestyle Series has some new
and exciting things in store for the season,

along with our banging line up from last
season. 2016 will showcase some of the best
Terrain Park building that Falls Creek has
seen with returning veteran park builder
Bailey Mitchell and Falls Creek newcomer
Brett Nakamoto. Both builders spent our
summer behind the wheel of a Park Cat at
Whistler Blackcomb.
The Falls Terrain Parks team are looking
forward to providing an outstanding
product tailored specifically towards safety
and progression with the introduction
of new features, innovative design and
professionally maintained parks.

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK Winter 2016 Edition ONE
DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA
A Song of Svens and Ice
W
inter is coming… I’m sure you’re
sick of hearing this, but I had to
say it. With the cold weather in
Melbourne last weekend and reports from
the ski resorts about what’s going on up in
the Alps, it’s safe to say, we’re super excited
about some snow! Alright, I’m done.
2015 was such a great year for Disabled
Wintersport Australia (DWA) which makes
us even more excited for 2016. With new
staff starting in Falls Creek, Mt Buller and
NSW we’ve got some exciting times ahead.
That being said, our longest standing staff
member Sven Erikson has gone missing.
Some reports say that he is hanging out at
the Sweetwater Brewery; others say that
he is camped out in a tent somewhere out
the back of the Big Hill Mountain Bike
Park. Who knows, maybe he got taken by
a White Walker?
After a long journey through DWA starting as a
Volunteer to becoming a seasonal staff member,
to being the National Program Coordinator
for a number of years, Sven has decided that his
time as lord commander of the nights watch is
over. And now his watch has ended.
Sven has been an integral part of the culture
and operations at DWA for almost a decade.
Many of you will have had interactions
with him in the past, and it is quite easy
to say that he is one of the reasons that
DWA has grown into such a successful and
well recognised organisation in ski resorts
all across Australia. Sven and his young
family are now residents of Mount Beauty
so they’re are certainly not out of the loop,
and we look forward to having him and his
partner back in the team of local volunteers.
From the whole team at DWA we send out a
sincere thanks to Sven for his overwhelming
dedication to the organisation, and wish
him well on his future adventures. We
Sven Erikson has played a significant role in DWA and will be sadly missed. Here (on the left) Sven is pictured with previous local DWA co-ordinator, Tom Mitten as they receive a cheque (for $10.7k) from the International Skiing Fellowship of Rotarians
via members of the local club, Jenny Flower, Ken Bell and Bob Flower. Pic - Courtesy of the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty..
understand that Sven has taken a role with
local government in the area.
Next week we will be able to announce our
successful applicant for the Resort Services
Coordinator at Falls Creek. This is an
exciting time for DWA and Falls Creek,
the Resort Services Coordinator role is new
to Falls and we’re excited for what is to
come. This person is going to be a valuable
resource for the Resort and our members!
The new coordinator and I are going to be
working together to develop a Disability
Access Guide for Falls Creek. Phil Knight
(Hotham Resort Services Coordinator)
worked with Mt Hotham last year to
develop the first Disability Access Guide,
and it has become a great resource, one
that we aim to have at all Australian resorts
in the near future.
We’ve got our fingers crossed that we
keep getting cold weather systems come
through, and with rumours circulating that
the El Nino has broken up, we may be in
for a good season. So burn your old ski’s as
a sacrifice and pray to the one true god, the
god of snow! See you soon Falls Creek. •

FALLS CREEK CFA
Celebrates 21 Years
F
alls Creek Fire Brigade is proud to
announce it is celebrating 21 years of
operations this year. The station was
officially established by the CFA in 1995.
The Falls Creek Fire Brigade’s primary
purpose is to protect the Falls Creek village
from fires though-out the year, including
the winter seasons and to provide support
to those attending to surrounding bushfires
and beyond. Currently the Brigade has 23
year round volunteers.
To celebrate the 21st year of CFA operations,
the Falls Creek Brigade is organising a range
of events to acknowledge this milestone.
The first being this weekend, the Queen’s
Birthday weekend. There will be an Open
Day where all Past and Current members,
Falls Creek visitors & Falls Creek community
members are being invited to visit the station
and share in a BBQ lunch. This will be on
Sunday 12th July from 1 - 5pm.

The snow and the environmentally
sensitive alpine environment demands a
range of very specialised equipment and
operating conditions for the Falls Creek
CFA. The Brigade is a ‘no foam’ Brigade
due to the sensitive alpine environment;
all hydrants are specifically designed for
freezing temperatures to ensure water
does not freeze in the hydrants when it
is needed. Members are required to turn

The 2003 fires had a major impact on Falls
Creek where the village and ski fields were
directly threatened and if not for the quick
thinking and dedication of local CFA
members the results could have been a lot
worse for the village and associated snow
infrastructure. Other historical fires in
1939 and also more recently in 2006 have
threatened the Falls Creek area also but not

to the extent of the 2003 fires.
Captain Danny Lucas says the crew is an
integral component of the village and has
been invaluable in protecting the village
from fires including those mentioned
earlier. “We continue to train weekly to
ensure we provide a high quality of skill
level to service our unique community.”
The Brigade has a long-term member,
Rock De Marchi, who has been with the
Falls Creek Brigade Since 1998 totalling
18 years of service to the community. Rock
is a great wealth of knowledge and assisted
in both the 2003 - 2006 wildfires that
threatened the Village.
Falls Creek Resort Management CEO
Stuart Smythe (also a Local CFA volunteer
member) says;
“All great communities have at their core
a group of volunteers whose service to
that community usually goes unheralded.
Community based volunteer emergency
services are essential, never more so than
in times of crisis. The Falls Creek CFA
and its members are a key part of that
front line. Our local CFA are at the ready
and prepared to protect lives, the village
and surrounding areas when needed and
have a tremendous track record of bravery
and service. They are the embodiment of
what the CFA stands for and the values

hang your hat on them. The real
stuff won’t be far away.
Last Wednesday, the 1st of June saw the
traditional Ice Plunge take place around at
Rocky Valley Dam. As well as continuing
a tradition gleaned from our Scandinavian
neighbours in northern Europe, this Ice
Plunge also goes a little way towards paying
homage to the Snow Gods. Although, if
you saw some of the bodies in their winter
tans, the Snow Gods may not have been too
impressed. But it happened anyway and was
a lot of fun. About 60 brave souls donned
costumes, from full dress up to ‘budgie
smugglers’ to hit the icy waters of Rocky
Valley right on 10am - including Tom and
Olly - personalities from Star FM in Albury.
The fabulous part of this plunge is not only the
great team that do it, but the amount of media
Chris Hocking and the resort are able to garner.
The resort had footage to air on Channel 7,
Channel 9, Channel 10, the ABC, Win and

HALF MARATHON WEEKEND
The Longest Triathlon
I
t began at 10am on Saturday 21st
May at the Mount Beauty Secondary
Oval, and finishes in late October in
Hollonds Street, outside the Bakery.
In the meantime participants will have run
ten or 21 kilometres, skied over seven, 21
or 42 kilometres and mountain-biked over
55km - taking in the sites of the Kiewa
Valley, the Bogong High Plains and the
Mitta Valley and Scrubby Creek.
It is billed as the longest Triathlon in
the world - taking almost five months to
complete. It’s called The Great Alpine
Challenge and the first leg - held back in
May was a great event. The Mount Beauty
Half Marathon attracted 402 entries. 102
entered the Half Marathon; 149 ran in
the 10km event and 151 took to the 3km
course around the lake.
Winners of the 3km were: Simon
O’Shaughnessy (1), Nicholas O’Brien (2),
Declan Burke (3). Among the girls it was:
Sarah Egan (1), Madeline Rochow (2),
Rose Foulston (3).
In the 10Km it was Ben Derrick (1), Phillip
Bellingham (2), Paul Hill (3). Among
the ladies it was Freya Clarke (1), Laura
Gillard (2), Lauren Preston (3). Results for
the 21km in the Men were: Ian Franzke
(1), Damian Gillard (2), Michael Hill (3).
Among the ladies it was Taryn Heather (1),
Toy Thomas (2), Lisa Sawyer (3).
Events like this are not easy to run, and
it seems the bureaucracy is getting more
heavily involved - for safety sake! Putting out
approximately 50 Traffic Management signs
- and bringing them back in has already seen
some event volunteers fall by the wayside.
But, thanks to a committee of basically
three people, and help from many
community minded members saw the
event go ahead and achieve a great result.
A great group of guys, about a dozen or
so from the Mount Beauty Men’s Shed
chipped in to man (I can say that) the
drink stations along the way, as well as
organise parking in the event area around
the sports stadium.
About eight or nine local Rotarians (with
Traffic Management qualifications) put
out and retrieved the required signs as well
as staffing the necessary intersections.
As usual, the St Johns volunteers arrived
and provided any and all of the necessary

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK Winter 2016 Edition ONE
OUR NEW MUSEUM
Re-Birthed
I
n 2012, a dedicated group of community members established the Falls Creek
Museum in the Snowlands Building.
With it came a wonderful collection of
memorabilia, photos, articles, interviews
and more that highlighted the unique and
fascinating history of Falls Creek and the
Bogong High Plains. Falls Creek was a true
pioneers’ playground.
After losing that space, the museum collection got packed up with the hope that a
new venue would become available. After
a short period of time Falls Creek Resort
Management came to the rescue and made
a space available to the museum committee. Again, the community came forward
and over a few working bees, lots of individuals came together to renovate the space
and turn a blank canvas into an interesting
and welcoming place.
With the 2016 Snow season upon us, there
is a new attraction to visit in Falls Creek.
The Falls Creek Historical Society has been
working extremely hard over the summer months to re-establish the Falls Creek
Museum in its new home. Housed in the
Panabode Building on Slalom Street (the
building adjacent to the Falls Creek Express
Lift), the museum will celebrate, through
displays, exhibitions and audio-visuals, our
vibrant past. Dating from the mountain
cattlemen, the avid recreationalists of the
early twentieth century, the workers on the
hydro schemes and to the men, women and
children who have shared a passion for the
alpine area. Our objective is to preserve and
share the rich and varied history of Falls
Creek and the adjacent Bogong High Plains.
This winter will be showcasing the 21st
birthday of the CFA in Falls Creek, paying tribute to our home-grown Winter
Olympians with an Olympic wall of fame
and highlight the importance of Ski Patrol
on our mountain. In addition to these
special attractions, we have a wonderful
collection of bindings from the 1940’s to
today, a small theatrette where visitors can
watch our fabulous history and even a 1972
snowmobile for the kids to sit on.
There are many ways you can support the
museum. First and foremost, take some
time on your trips this year to drop by and
say hello. You can also:
• Donate publications, memoirs, photos,
equipment and vintage clothing to add to
our collection of artefacts.
• Volunteer your time to help us have the
museum open to the public and/or assist
in managing our collections or developing
exhibitions.
The museum will be open this weekend,
Saturday and Sunday from 10am - 4pm
and Monday 10am-2pm. Our official
opening will be Saturday at 2pm.
Take a look at our Facebook page at Facebook/Falls Creek Museum. Email us on

COMMUNITY NEWS
World Elder Abuse
Awareness Day
J
une 15th 2016 is the UN designated
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Mrs
Terri Hopper President of the Alpine Independent Aged Care Advocacy Service
Inc. believes that “this is a day to remind
our community that human rights do not
diminish as people get older, and that everyone
has the right to live with dignity and respect.”
To recognise and increase community awareness
to Elder Abuse, Alpine Health, Alpine Shire
Council and the Alpine Independent Aged
Care Advocacy Service Inc. will be holding
community information sessions with Mr
Gary Ferguson from Seniors Rights Victoria
as the guest Speaker. The sessions will also
include morning or afternoon tea.
The events are scheduled to take place at:
Bright RSL Hall, Wills Street, Bright. 10am,
Thursday 16th June.
Lakeside Community Health Centre, Mount
Beauty. 2pm Thursday16th June.
Myrtleford Savoy Club. 10am Friday 17th June.

they know and trust, such as a family member
or friend. The abuse may be physical, social,
financial, psychological or sexual and can
include mistreatment and neglect. Elder abuse
is vastly under-reported but the World Health
Organisation estimates that up to 10 per cent
of older people worldwide are affected. It is a
symptom of both the ageism and sexism that
are rife in our society.
The latest figures compiled by the National
Ageing Research Institute of Seniors Rights
Victoria show that financial abuse and
psychological/emotional abuse together are
the most common forms of abuse reported
by older Victorians (81.82%).
Victims are most likely to be female (72.5%),
and the perpetrators are 60% male and
40% female. 92.3% of abuse is perpetrated
by persons related to the older person or in
a de facto relationship: 66.8% of abuse is
perpetrated by a child of the older person.
Susan Ryan, the Age Discrimination
Commissioner, has called for a co-ordinated
national approach to countering elder abuse
- one that involves the government and
community sectors and which ‘empowers’
older people through a human rights-based
approach to seek help or to speak out.
At the Victorian Royal Commission into
Family Violence, elder abuse organisations
identified a long list long list of barriers limiting
older people’s access to justice and services, and
made a number of recommendations.
Warning signs of elder abuse may include
an older person seeming fearful, anxious or
isolated. There may be injuries, or an absence
of personal care. Disappearance of possessions,
unexplained financial transactions, and changes
to a will, title or other documents are also of
concern, as are arguments with a caregiver.
Given that most elder abuse occurs behind
closed doors, it is important for loved ones to
watch out for signs, listen and offer help.
To guard against elder abuse, older people
should make sure their financial, medical,
legal and other affairs are in order. They
must also be empowered to recognise signs of
elder abuse, and speak out.
Older Victorians experiencing elder abuse can get
help by calling Seniors Rights Victoria on 1300
368 821 Monday to Friday, from 10 am to 5 pm.
The website is www.seniorsrights.org.au.
Alpine Health, Alpine Shire Council and the
Alpine Independent Aged Care Advocacy
Service Inc. invite the community to become
more aware of elder abuse and participate in
the community event in your local township.

PROPERTY OF THE WEEK
Chinook
T
his is an extremely rare opportunity to

Chinook has a long alpine head lease of 32
years. It is currently listed in the Alpine
Luxury rental pool - however can be used
solely for private use should the lucky buyer
decide to do so.

bathrooms and comfortably accommodates
between eight and 12 people over two levels.
The entry level features a foyer, large ski/
drying room, separate laundry, large utility
room with desk & TV, spacious bedroom
with excellent natural light and bathroom.

resort’s finest dining establishments.
As an all-year-round resort and holiday
destination, Falls Creek has a lot to offer.
World class mountain bike trails have been
constructed in the resort and more will be
opened up in the next couple of years. This
has led to lots of fun for locals and adds
amenity and attraction for visitors.
We then have the fully sealed Bogong High
Plains Road giving access to the fabulous
high plains, the Mitta Valley on the other
side - including the Blue Duck and Payne’s

12°C cooler temperatures on those stinking
40°C summer days in the city.

LOCAL TALENT
Charlie Brown
I
t would be pretty well understood
that many aspects of those close to us
get taken for granted. This paper has
been fortunate to have access to absolutely
fabulous photographers (and their
images) over the years - which have been
instrumental in providing what we trust is
a publication representative of the quality
of this resort, this area and the people in it.
One of those photographers, Charlie
Brown, while continuing to live in the
area, won’t be doing as much local work in
the future and therefore the decision was
made to have a chat with him and find out
what he has been up to.
KB: So Charlie you’ve been around these
parts for quite a while now.
CB: Yeah I’ve been around for a bit,
although I’ve only been living in Mount
Beauty full time for the last five years. I
was working up at Falls for 20 winters,
then going home to Sorrento, on the
Mornington Peninsular for the summers.
KB: So what inspired the ‘tree change’?
CB: I think the relaxed lifestyle of the area
and the mountains. I’ve always thought
you’ve got to live by the ocean or by the
mountains and I’d lived by the ocean
for most of my life and it was time for a
change. The mountains were calling!
KB: Photography, have you always been a
photographer?
CB: I’ve been interested in photography for a
long time but it wasn’t till 1990 that I really
started getting serious about it. Actually it
was a skiing accident that changed my plans.
16
Charlie’s exhibition in the Boardroom at QT this weekend. Pic - Courtesy Charlie Brown.
I was being photographed skiing at Mt Buller
and I stuffed up and broke my back. That
was about the time that I thought, “Hmmm,
maybe I should be on the other side of the
camera” After recovering from that accident
I went back to Mt Hotham to try my luck at
making it as a ski photographer, shooting a bit
of stuff for the resort and the odd magazine
and various other things, there was no internet
back then, it was a whole different ball game.
KB: When did you start up at Falls Creek?
CB: I started up at Falls in 1999, the Lift
Co asked me to come over and shoot their
brochure, for the first couple of seasons I lived
at Mt Hotham and worked in Falls, I’d come
over to Falls for a couple of days shooting then
go back to Hotham for a week or so and just
ski, haha, it was a pretty good set up.
Then the snow show guys (remember the
‘Snow Show’?) Mark and Marcus - they
asked if I’d like to move to Falls and do
some snow reports for the radio and TV so
I made the move, although my TV career
didn’t last very long. I’ve got a much better
face for radio, ha ha.
KB: You started off as a ski photographer, when
did the landscape photography come about?
CB: I started getting all arty farty when I
moved here. There’s something about the
alpine area that’s really inspiring.
KB: So you’ve even started entering into
some art shows?
CB: Yeah, I was recently asked to enter
some work in the Canterbury Art Show in
Melbourne which was a great experience
and I’ve just entered some pieces into the
2016 MAMA art prize, which would be a
fantastic one to win, fingers crossed.
KB: Any exhibitions coming up?
CB: Well glad you asked, I’ve got one on at
Falls Creek on the Saturday and Sunday of the
opening weekend in the QT conference room.
There you have it folks. A little bit of
background on one of our talented
photographers. This weekend, check out his
exhibition in the QT Boardroom, mid-level
above the FoodWorks and below Stingray.
And thanks to Charlie for his time and his
fantastic images. •
