Principal’s Message
“We Are …. A People of Christ”
Welcome Back Everyone
Blessings to You All As our New Year Begins
How wonderful it is to begin another school year here at St. Patrick’s School. Teachers and staff have been
very busy getting the school ready to welcome both our new and returning students to an exciting new year.
We also welcome new staff to our school community here in Southridge.
How appropriate it is that our school year begins with the canonization of Mother Teresa. Her incredible
example of caring for so many is a wonderful model for us all. Seeing Christ in every face, seeing the blessings
of all of our students and staff, and acting with Christ in our hearts is what we strive for each and every day in
our Catholic school system.
This year also begins with recognizing the blessings that we were given over the summer holiday. Many of us
had the chance to spend time with family and friends both near and far. Many had the chance also to appreciate
the gifts of our outside world given to us by God. Some families camped, enjoyed sports and leisure activities,
and took time to rest. And now again we receive the gifts that our Catholic school offers to our students and
staff. We will have the blessing of bringing Christ into our classrooms, our assemblies, our school days, and
into our hearts as we begin another exciting year here at St. Patrick’s School.
Welcome to our school where Christ lives.
God Bless
Staff of St. Patrick’s School
AGENDAS
Students in Grades 1—5 will be provided with agendas. Please be sure to browse through our
student handbook at the front of the agenda, with your son or daughter regarding important
school related information. Included in the handbook is the Division Calendar including all
Professional Development days which students do not attend classes. If a student loses their
agenda , a replacement can be purchased from the office for $8.00.
Message from Vice Principal,
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all staff, parents, and students for the many warm welcomes to St.
Patrick's School. As well, I'd like to wish my previous school community (Notre Dame Academy) best wishes
of success for the new school year. It is hard to believe summer has already gone by and that we are back to
school. I hope your time with family and friends was rewarding with laughter and lasting memories.
We are very excited to meet the new students of St. Patrick's school and to see how others have grown over the
summer break. As well, thank you parents for your trust in allowing us to celebrate and introduce Christ into
the hearts and minds of your children. May God bless all of you through the journey of our new school year.
Back To School Prayer for Students
Heavenly Father, I ask for help as I begin this new school year.
Allow me to experience your presence in the many blessing you put before me.
Open my eyes to the new challenges and exciting opportunities that this new school year brings.
Open my heart and mind to friends and new teachers.
Open me a generous spirit to become enthusiastic with my studies and courage to accept new opportunities.
Help me to be attentive to my teachers and family and to experience your presence in my new friends.
Heavenly Father inspire me to do my best this year. Amen
Dwayne Unreiner (Vice Principal)
Absences and Lates
We ask that parents phone the school by 9:15 AM when their child is absent or late.
If we don’t receive a phone call, we will call to check on the absence. We thank you for
cooperation; our concern is for your child’s safe arrival at school. We would also like to
remind parents that you can phone the school at any hour and leave a message on the
answering machine if this is more convenient for you to report these absences. Just a
reminder that if your child arrives late to school please have them check in at the office
to pick up a late slip. Students can then go to their classroom on their own. It is not
necessary for parents to accompany them to their rooms.
Students Arriving at School in the Morning
We ask that all grade 1-5 students go directly to the playground area at the back of
the school upon arriving in the morning. Supervisors will be there to greet and watch
them beginning at 8:40 until the bell rings at 8:55. Students should take all of their
belongings with them to the back playground area and not enter the school to drop off
backpacks. Thank you for your cooperation with this matter.
Parent Council Needs You
Each year our Parent Council sponsors a great variety of activities and programs for
our students. We are looking for parents who would love to take part in a small or big
way in making this year a wonderful experience for their children. Please consider
helping in a small way by coming out to our first Parent Council Meeting Thursday,
September 22nd at 7 pm. Help us make a difference in your child’s school experience.
God Bless
Student Accident Insurance Forms
Are provided for your convenience. These were sent home the first day of school.
Please return forms to the insurance company and not to school.
Safety & Learning First
Visiting in our Building
Important ways to ensure both:
1.
For safety Reasons doors inside our front
foyer will remain locked
2.
All parents & visitors involved in an
activity outside of a child pickup
please sign in at the office.
3.
Parents / Guardians picking up their
child are asked to wait in the front
foyer until the doors are opened.
4.
With over 100 parents dropping off and
picking up their children each day,
please do your best to be silent in the
hallways. Little hard working brains get
distracted easily with noise.
Thank you
We would like to thank our custodians Clint
Stojke and Shirley Straub for the outstanding
job they have done in getting our school ready
for the upcoming year.
They take great pride in their work and it
shows!!

Superintendent of Schools
Welcome Back Message
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to our community of Catholic schools. I trust the summer has provided an opportunity to relax,
rejuvenate and to spend time with family and friends. To those new to our Division I extend a special welcome and a
reassurance that you are part of a learning and faith environment that is committed to excellence. To those families
and students returning a sincere welcome back. Our schools are your schools. I encourage parents to become
actively involved in their school community and the education of their child (ren). Our Catholic schools are rooted
in the gospel values and it is through this lens that we provide hope to the students and families entrusted to us.
These are exciting times in our Division as we continue the modernization of Monsignor McCoy and begin the
construction of our newest school, St. John Paul II. Our facilities are well cared for and loved but they represent the
structure of who we are. Community within the walls of these buildings is at the heart of why we exist. In partner‐
ship with the family, school, and parishes we strive to create this sense of belonging, of community. Your children
attend our schools for a reason. They are where they need to be.
For the 2016‐17 school year, we will continue to focus on a comprehensive strategic plan for our Division. The
overarching focus is to engage our students. When students feel empowered in their learning, success occurs. It is
through this meaningful involvement that we witness the passion and curiosity in every child. The Board of
Trustees has worked closely with all stakeholders to develop strategic priorities. We are committed to these
priorities and will continue to align them with the Alberta Education 3 year plan. The Division priorities for 2016‐2017
focus on:
OUR FAITH, enhancing the identity of our schools,
INCREASE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT by fostering relationships between students, parents, parish and our
community,
FINE ARTS, enhancing and fostering a love of the Fine Arts,
TECHNOLOGY, to support student learning,
Providing a welcoming, caring, respectful and SAFE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT,
Enhancing student learning through actions that reflect the values of INCLUSIVE EDUCATION and,
Fostering the CATHOLIC SPIRIT of Athletics.
As we embark on a new school year our administrators and staff are committed to providing faith filled quality edu‐
cation where students are engaged learners, with curious minds and hearts. On behalf of the staff and trustees of
the Medicine Hat Catholic School Division I would like to thank‐you for your continued support of Catholic
education. As our Motto states, we are committed to Showing the Face of Christ to All. We understand this commit‐
ment and will strive to attain it. We look forward to the year ahead and to providing a quality, faith‐filled education.
Blessings,

Parent Newsletter
September 2016
Healthy Fundraising = Healthy Rewards
Most schools choose to fundraise. There are many options for
fundraising and choosing healthy fundraisers sends a message to children
that health and wellness are important. Children need healthy environments,
like playground equipment, healthy food, and a welcoming environment to
learn and develop, so think about how fundraising can contribute to the health
of students, staff and families. Here are some examples of what you can
suggest to your school for healthy fundraising ideas:
Reminder: At the beginning of
September, routine immunization
consent forms for all Grade 5 and Grade
9 students are either sent home with
your child or mailed home.
Please complete the consent forms
within one week and either return them
to the school or mail them to your local
Public Health office using the enclosed
stamped envelope.
* Bowl, bike, walk, skip‐a‐thon
* Art showcase
* Sell items that promote physical ac vity (e.g. water bo les, gym passes, pedometers)
* Car washes
* Plants, flowers, seeds, and bulbs
* Fruit and vegetable boxes, baskets or bundles
* Talent night
Parents are an important part of the school environment. You can play an active role and help your child’s school by attending School Council meetings,
sharing ideas you have about healthy fundraisers, and be a positive role model
by making healthy choices. For more information about how to help visit:

Walk Safe
The new school year means many of you will be walking with your child to school. Walking has many benefits, like
physical activity, quality time together and familiarity with your community and neighbours. Even if you live too far
from your school to walk there from your home you can still give your child the walking experience by parking five to
ten minutes away from the school.
Walking with your child and negotiating neighbourhood streets with them provides an experience and opportunity to
develop traffic safety awareness and to practice safe pedestrian behaviours. Until they are at least 9 years old, most
children will need supervision to walk to school. Did you know that 26 judgement skills are required to cross a street
safely and that many of these skills have not fully developed in a young child? For example, they may think that a car
can stop instantly or that if they can see a car, the driver can see them. Children are also often easily distracted and may
underestimate dangerous situations. Make it a rule to:
* Only cross the street at pedestrian crosswalks or corners, and to cross railway tracks at designated crossings
* Always walk on the sidewalk or as far away from the street as possible, facing traffic.
* Never play on the street or around or between parked cars.
* Point, Pause and Proceed:
*POINT acr oss the r oad with your ar m to tell dr iver s that you ar e r eady to cr oss
*PAUSE until all vehicles stop and you have made eye contact with dr iver s
*PROCEED with your ar m out, and keep looking both ways as your cr oss For more information on pedestrian safety and childhood injury prevention visit:
