FEBRUARY 2016
CLUB
NEWS
Dear Members,
We want to wish you and your family a Happy and a Healthy
New Year.
The December Holiday Season just keeps getting better and
it was wonderful to see all of our families and friends enjoying
the club facilities. Food and Beverage saw its fifth busiest day
since the inception of Gleneagles topping 1400 meals on
December 27. A big thank you to our staff for the wonderful
Ralph Winer
job of keeping our member and guest services at the wonderful
bog president
level that they have come to expect.
The Gleneagles Masquerade New Year’s Eve Party looked
stunning. We had a wonderful evening at the club to ring in the
New Year, both at the Masquerade Ball and at the casual New
Year’s Eve dinner in the Grille Room. Both celebrations were
well attended and received rave reviews from the membership.
The Healthy Lifestyle Initiative has been well received by
our membership. Our lectures included Medicine Awareness,
Techniques to Reduce Stress and Improving Movement with
Kraig Spina
Less Pain. Our Nutritionist, Maureen Buchbinder, has been
general
working with both our members and staff to assist in healthy
manager
options from both the buffet and our a la carte menus. The
Fitness Center has numerous activities including Moonlight Yoga and Walk, Meditation,
Nutrition workshops and 5K training that have all been tremendous successes.
The Board, Committees and Leadership staff continue to work on the Phase II
initiative which includes the Fitness Center, multi-purpose venue, pool and pool
Surrounding area. As information becomes available it will be communicated to our
membership. Architectural conceptual renderings of the proposed Fitness Center and
pool area will be the next update.
Don’t forget, the Board of Governors election ballots are due by 5:00 pm on February
22. On February 23, we will hold the Annual Membership Meeting at 8:00 pm in the Legends
Dining Room where we will announce your 2016 Board of Governors in addition to annual
reports from the Club President, Ralph Winer and the Club Treasurer, Richard Hotz.
Committees are a very important part of Gleneagles Country Club. As such, we
are making our best efforts to afford all members who desire to serve on a committee
an opportunity to do so. This is accomplished by establishing a protocol for serving
on committees which limits the amount of time a member may serve on the same
committee. We encourage all members that have an interest to apply for a committee,
and for those that may be ending their term on one committee to consider applying
for another committee of interest. Committee application forms will be mailed to all
members in early March and are to be returned to the club by March 16.
Round Table Breakfast meetings will continue through February to discuss the
upcoming Renovation and other relevant club events. Contact Varto Hairanian at 4983606 ext. 131 or [email protected] to inquire about available dates.
Respectfully yours,
Ralph Winer, President
Kraig Spina, General Manager
BOARD MEETING • Thursday, February 18 at 2:00 pm
Open to all members. Members may speak at Board Meetings for no longer than three minutes about
any items on the agenda. A sign-up sheet will be available at the Concierge Desk after the agenda is
posted, and a sign-up sheet will be available in the meeting room prior to its start.

Food for thought...
The holidays were a huge success again and after a fun filled
New Year’s Eve party, we ended with an incredible array of
culinary marvels on our New Year’s Day hangover brunch, along
with our famous bloody mary and mimosa station.
The season is going by at a rapid pace with Passover not that
many weeks away, so hang on to your hats and get ready for an
action-packed February!

The Valentine’s Dinner Dance is on Saturday, February 13 in the Legends Dining
Room, so make your reservations to dance the night away to the sounds of the Jeff
Taylor Trio. Dress code is evening casual and it is Members only. For those not planning
on attending the dance, we are offering a Pasta Buffet in the Grille Room that night.
Presidents Week kicks off with the Poolside BBQ on Sunday, February 14 and runs
through Wednesday, February 17. For dinner on Presidents Day (Monday, February 15) we
are offering a Pub Night in the Grille Room followed by Kids’ Bingo in the Waterfall Room.
We end the month with Music Under the Stars on Saturday, February 27 on the
Veranda and Seafood Night in Legends Dining Room. Both events are not to be missed.
As usual, we look forward to seeing your friends and families during this busy time.
Please help us by informing them of our dress codes and rules so we may make it a
memorable visit.
Thanks to the Food and Beverage committee for their hard work, suggestions and

Cheers!

JOE DeMINO, pga
director of golf
We are already deep into the season and it has been a great start to another fabulous
tournament program here at Gleneagles! The turnouts have been incredible. We want
to thank everyone for their support in all the events, we could not be successful without
your overwhelming participation. The month of January brought some great nail biting
events such as the Ladies 9 and 18 Hole Ryder Cup, Men’s Governors Cup & the Men’s
9 Hole Ryder Cup! Our Ladies Interclub Match with St. Andrews Country Club was
really a big success and we look forward to the next round in February. Don’t forget to
sign up for some great events in the month of February – from Play for P.I.N.K. to the
Men’s 18 Ryder Cup, Mixed Couples, and yes, we will be offering Junior Golf Clinics
during the Presidents Week holidays for your visiting family members.
Our golf orientation video has been a big success and to date, approximately 80%
of the golf membership has watched the video. This video was successful at opening
a dialogue between the members and the professionals, and we appreciate the many
great questions and even suggestions. We appreciate your dedication to ensuring the
golf experience is enjoyable for all.
Make your plans to invite a friend to our Men’s & Ladies Member Guest events that
are held in the month of March! These are signature events for our club and they fill
up fast, so pick up an application in the Golf Shop.
The golf staff is always here for you! If you have any ideas for a fun event or just want
to chat, please stop in and see us.
PAUL CRESPO, pga
head golf professional
I hope everyone enjoyed our first Golf & Fitness Clinic in
January. If you were not able to attend, we will be having another
one on March 11 at 4:00 pm. Please mark your calendars for this
great opportunity to work with our Golf Professionals and our
Fitness Team to improve your golf game.
Our next Demo Day is February 26 from 11:00 am – 3:00
pm. Please stop by and try out the existing lines and the newly
released clubs from companies such as… Callaway, TaylorMade,
Cobra and many more! If you have any companies that you
would like to have at our Demo Days please let me know and I will see what I can do.
As a reminder, all members must attend the Golf Orientation Seminar prior to next
Golf Season. There are two more dates this spring, January 21 at 4:00 pm and February
11 at 4:00 pm in the Waterfall Room. If you have any questions please let me know.

PRO GOLF TIP
PUTTING
“Oh boy!” That is what many of
us say when someone mentions
putting. We all seem to have trouble
in putting, whether we hit it too
hard or too soft, have trouble
getting the feel for the day, or it
seems we are just reading it wrong.
The length of the stroke on both
sides of the ball is so important
to our speed and our direction of
the putt. Remember that if you do
not have the proper speed, the
direction really doesn’t matter.
A good thing to do is try and use
the width of your feet to determine
the length of your putting stroke.
For example, for a small putt put
your feet closer together, for a
medium putt spread them out a
little, and on a longer putt spread
them out even more to provide for
balance and also the length of the
stroke for both sides of the ball.
Always remember, soft hands and
try to eliminate the use of your
wrist in putting. It is all arms and
shoulders. Hope this tip helps you
eliminate some three-putts! Stop in
and chat golf if you have any further
questions. – Joe

GLENEAGLES COUNTRY CLUB
Another month has gone by and
the season is going great. I have been
very busy regripping clubs. I have been
noticing during lessons the need for
new grips and more importantly the
need for having the proper size grip.
Grips are not one size fits all and should
be fit accordingly by one of the golf
professionals. Please come see us with any questions regarding
grips.
Tee time requests and recurring requests continue to come
in at a steady pace. Members have the ability to control these
requests either through the Pro Shop or on their computer
through the Gleneagles website. For help accessing the website
and doing requests on your own, please come see me and I
would be more than happy to teach you.
We want to make sure everyone is posting scores to their
handicap. If you have any questions, please stop by and see me.

It is appropriate that Pickleball takes center stage in the Tennis
column this month, since we have completed four beautiful new
courts at the Tennis Center. There are still 21 tennis courts since
Court #1 has been transformed to a hard court but there are now
two Pickleball courts on either side of the tennis net with movable
Pickleball nets. The court has been constructed of asphalt with
an independent drainage system and an extra layer of Laykold
Cushion Plus on the surface to produce a court softer and easier
on the body than a regular hard court. The color of the exterior
court is Tournament Green and the Pickleball playing surface is
Bimini Blue. There are both tennis and Pickleball lines on the
surface with Pickleball sporting the predominant white lines with
MIKE PUC,
muted purple lines for the tennis lines.

The Tennis Calendar of Events continues to chug along as February has two marquee
events beginning with Dancing Under the Stars, Thursday February 4. Cocktails will be
served on the Veranda followed by dinner and dancing in the Legends Lounge to the
sounds of The Prime Time Band. Pick up your table registration forms at tennis or the
main clubhouse. The always entertaining and popular Jai Alai Tennis returns Saturday
February 27, 3:00 – 5:00 pm. Watch, wager and win with our funny money while enjoying
complimentary wine and cheese. This year’s event benefits the Gleneagles PAP Corps and
we invite all Gleneagles membership categories to bring their friends and family to support
this worthy cause. Register in advance in the Pro Shop and pay $10.00 at the door for a
night of great tennis, great friends and great prizes.

PRO TENNIS TIP
FIVE IN A ROW
The Guinness Book of World
Records has a new record. Two
teaching Pros hit over 30,000
volleys in a row over 5 hours
of play! Now that is some
consistency.
Putting the ball in the court
should be your #1 strategy to
winning. Too many mistakes
are made on the first three hits
in a rally, depriving players of
rhythm and confidence. Make
the serve, return and first hit,
and you will gain momentum
and concentration. To improve
concentration, try counting 5 hits
in a row over the net. You may
not break the Guinness record,
but if you consistently make 5
returns over the net, you will win
many matches.

HOW'S YOUR POSTURE?
Tuesday, February 16
4:00-5:00 pm at Strathearn
Your posture has a dramatic effect on your health. When you repeat
poor posture every day, your body’s structure slowly changes and
adapts to it, resulting in misalignment and pain. Miri Inquer, owner
and physical therapist of Absolute Rehab Therapy, will address
the toll poor posture can take on your health. Miri approaches the
problems she sees from the source rather than just treating your
symptoms. To attend, please call the Fitness Center at 495-2806

How about becoming a volunteer instructor and sharing your knowledge? The greatest
satisfaction in life is to assist others. Just speak to any Board member or send an email
to [email protected] with the details.
Our season continues with a number of new workshops scheduled for February,
March and April. Every month new devices or operating systems are being introduced
in the digital world. Keeping up with technology, the Computer Club has purchased a
WIN10 system, an iPad Air2 and a Chromebook (demonstrated at Dec. 21 meeting).
All members are encouraged to ask for a 30 minute demo of any of these systems
before they buy (or afterwards) to learn the how’s and how nots. It’s easy, just send a
request to [email protected].
The Computer Club is run by our Board of Directors, consisting of eleven volunteers,
who are elected annually at the March Meeting. We welcome your interest and at our
open meeting February 15, we will ask for nominations. Any member in good standing
is eligible and can even nominate themselves. No expertise is necessary, simply the
desire to assist others. Compensation is the SATISFACTION of helping others.

GLENEAGLES COUNTRY CLUB
Greetings Gleneagles!
by ralph perfetto, director of security
My name is Ralph Perfetto. I am your new Security Director.
I have been employed at Gleneagles since early December 2015.
I was a Deputy Director at St. Andrews Country Club for a brief
time while awaiting this opportunity. Prior to that assignment, I
enjoyed a 21 year career with the NYPD and retired as a Lieutenant. I lived in Manhattan
for many years which allowed me to become diversified in many cultures. Although I
am here to provide you with a safe environment to live in, please feel free to contact me
with any other concerns that you may have. I look forward to meeting and working with
all of the residents here at Gleneagles Country Club! Here are five important safety tips:
• Be aware of your surroundings! Many auto accidents occur while simply not
paying attention to the road in front you. Talking on the phone and texting
are two prime examples.
• Be attentive when backing out of a parking spot! Be aware of waiting cars and
others who might be backing out at the same time as you.
• Park in well-lit areas! If lighting is inadequate, please notify Gleneagles
management.
• Always come to a complete stop at a stop sign! We have many residents,
members, employees, etc. that may be waiting to cross the road. They could
be on a golf cart, running, or simply just walking.
• Always roll up your car windows and lock your car doors!

Fun!
February is here and there is no shortage of great events to
participate in. Kicking off the month of February is Capitol Steps
on February 2. We then have our new favorite past time with
Piano in the Lounge on February 3 followed by Saxophone in
the Lounge on February 10. On February 11, our Live Lecture
is not to be missed, as we hear about the Comedy of Sid Cesar
with Ira Epstein. Our Valentine’s Day Dinner Dance will be on
February 13.
We then kick off our Presidents Day with a Pool Party on
February 15 and our traditional hit with Kids’ Bingo that
evening. Complimentary Piano in the Lounge is on February 20.
We then take you to Brazil for a Night in Brazil with The Beatriz
Malnic Trio in our Lounge on February 24. Hear the beautiful
rhythms of Latin and Brazilian music while enjoying a dessert
or cocktail in the lounge. Enjoy your February and as always, I
look forward to seeing you having fun here at Gleneagles.

The Comedy of
Sid Caesar
At the Bridge Table by marilyn rubinstein
By the time you read this article Gleneagles will be enrolled
in the Common Game Service. What is the Common Game? It
is a free service for local clubs which provides bridge players
the opportunity to compare their results with players at other
clubs, playing the same hands across the country. You must
be a member of ACBL and voila! Results of any sanctioned
game you play in will appear in your email. Results include:
Matchpointed Results, Pro Analysis, Individual Play Analytics,
www.The CommonGame.com.
Men’s Duplicate Game is Monday 12:30 (except the third Monday of the month)
at Strathearn. The director is Aaron Simon. Come and play - the results will be on
your email! Our Open Social Bridge on Sunday nights is very popular. Social players
looking to learn duplicate and have a fun time
without the intimidation? This is the game for
you! This game is meant to be a fun and social
game that gives you the basics and confidence
to gravitate towards the duplicate games that
we also offer. No reservations necessary.
We are looking forward to the Ladies
Bridge Member Guest on February 22. This
event is famous in South Florida and will be
sold out again. Thanks to our committee,
Claire Belfer, Florence Friedland and Joyce
Kates.
Bring me your Bridge News: A new
Life Master, Win a Knockout, Have a high
percentage game, etc. We will make you
famous! See you at the tables!
