President’s Message
It has been an honor for me to serve as Board President for the past two years. I can assure you that our
Board of Directors is committed to helping those in need in Beacon Falls and Naugatuck. Ours is one
of the smallest United Ways in the State of Connecticut, yet we certainly accomplish a great deal. We
serve over 10,000 individuals in our communities through our partner agencies and raise funds through
employee contributions and special events. The generosity of our donors and our event sponsors, the
countless hours donated by our volunteers and the dedication of our partner agencies never ceases to
amaze me. This community is truly extraordinary.
Campaign Chair Allan Monteiro led a very successful campaign. He recruited some new members for
his team and they worked diligently to obtain new contributors and reconnect with previous donors. We
extend a great deal of thanks to Allan and his team for their energy and dedication to our United Way.
Laurie Yelding
President
Our Allocations Committee, led by Stephen Pretto, spent countless hours this winter reviewing applications
for funding. Individual meetings were held with each of our partner agencies to ensure that your dollars met the need of our
community. We are truly thankful for their commitment and time given to this important process.
The Marketing Committee, led by Dorothy Hoff, had another productive year, enhancing the website and Facebook page. This
hardworking committee continues to promote our United Way with informational materials and also focused on United Way’s
volunteers, donors and partner agencies. We are fortunate to have these dedicated volunteers working with us.
United Way also had a very successful year with special events. These events give United Way the ability to connect with the people
of our community in a different way. The Annual Car Show in July, sponsored by Ground Up, and our Golf Tournament both surpassed
our expectations. Our Special Events Chair, Donna Andrew, once again outdid herself with Kentucky Derby Day and the Salem Bus
Trip. Both events were fantastic and well attended. The annual Halloween Gala sponsored by Fitzpatrick, Mariano, Santos, Sousa PC,
Morrissey, Morrissey & Mooney and Diversified Financial Solutions has grown every year and the costumes are always creative. Our
8th Annual Festival of Trees was held in December and brought together businesses, schools, agencies and people both young and
old showing the true message of “community spirit”. Thank you to all the volunteers who help make these events so successful!
We are grateful for the financial support the Naugatuck Partnership for Children (formerly Naugatuck Discovery) continues to
receive from The Graustein Memorial Fund and Connecticut Community Foundation. The Partnership supports a number of programs
in our community such as the Pre K Kindergarten Peer Mentoring Initiative, Breakfast Club (Empowering Naugatuck Children to
Lead Healthy Lives), and Parent Leadership Training. The collaborative continues to explore opportunities to benefit all children in
Naugatuck.
During this past year, the Board of Directors created an Advisory Board which is an ancillary group of the Board of Directors. The
primary purpose of the Advisory Board is to provide the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls with ongoing support and
include a broader representation of the community. Additionally, the Advisory Board serves to engage those individuals who desire
to maintain contact and involvement with the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls, yet are unable to actively participate in
monthly meetings, and other Director commitments. Members will attend four meetings a year.
A very special thank you goes to our Executive Director Lisa Shappy and Finance Director Beth Mongelluzzo for their continued
commitment to our United Way.
I am sincerely grateful to all of you for making my experience with the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls wonderful. I
had the privilege to be Allocations Chair and meet our partner agency staff and clients, head up the annual campaign as Chair and
the honor of working alongside caring and talented individuals who care so much about our community. Thank you to our donors,
corporate sponsors, volunteers, partner agencies and staff. Live United.

Campaign Chair’s Message
Dear Friends,
Allan V. Monteiro, Chair
It has truly been an honor to serve as the 2014 Campaign Chair for the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon
Falls. I would like to thank all who have contributed to the success of this year’s Campaign. I would like to
specifically thank the Board of Directors, Campaign Team, Marketing Committee and the Special Events
Committee for their commitment, hard work, determination and continued focus in keeping the United Way of
Naugatuck and Beacon Falls prominent in our Community.
Thank you to the Allocations Committee who put in countless hours and effort in order to ensure that the
campaign funds are directed where they will most benefit those in our Community. This committee is truly the
core of the United Way.
I am thankful for Executive Director, Lisa Shappy and Finance Director, Beth Mongeluzzo. They keep everything and
everyone organized and on track! Their dedication and passion to this United Way is evident in everything they do. Allan V. Monteiro
Campaign Chair
I would also like to thank those who donated their time and talents to the United Way. Thank you for your contributions to our United Way and
for your confidence in our organization. Without all of you, I would not be able to report that we have reached our goal of $440,000. For over 50 years, the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls has been, and continues to be devoted to
helping our community - Live United!
Sincerely,
Allan V. Monteiro

2014 ANNUAL REPORT
Marketing Chair Report
“Never doubt a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing
that ever has.” Margaret Mead
Mom! Dad! Can you help me? As kids, we were the ones asking for help cleaning up our room or with tricky
math homework, and certainly as parents, we do all we can do to assist our children.
Sadly, some calls do not receive such immediate attention. Some problems are not so easily resolved.
Fortunately, those of us who reside in Naugatuck and Beacon Falls live in towns with incredible community
spirit. The needs of families in Naugatuck and Beacon Falls vary. Calls for help, which cannot so easily be
answered by immediate family, are responded to by several church, school, scouting and community groups,
including agencies which our United Way of Naugatuck & Beacon Falls helps to fund. Whether it is the
American Red Cross after a tragic house fire, Literacy Volunteers helping the unemployed and those trying to
better their skills, or Safe Haven sheltering abused women and children, there are many in our area who work
or volunteer to make life better for all of us.
Dorothy Hoff
Marketing Committee
As we wrap up another campaign year at the United Way, we would like to thank all of our supporters. The Citizen’s News’ Editor Elio
Gugliotti and his staff are amazing, with press coverage for our events, passionate editorials, and advertising assistance. In addition to
the support we receive throughout the year from the Republican-American, reporter Paul Singley serves on our Marketing Committee,
offering his own expertise, advice and time, even creating videos for our use. Several local companies, Flabeg Technical Glass, ITW
Powertrain, Goldenrod Corp, Yelding Inc., Sarracco Mechanical, Ground Up, Naugatuck Valley Saving & Loan, Ion Bank, and Town and Board
of Education, offer their help, not only with corporate grants, donations, and payroll deductions, but also time donated by their CEO’s and
employees, serving on our Board of Directors and various committees, including roll-up-your-sleeves event planning. Most importantly, we
would like to thank each individual donor who contributes through their payroll, even designating money back to Naugatuck & Beacon Falls
from their companies located elsewhere, and those individuals who donate what they can, or attend one of our events, the Sao Paio race,
Halloween Gala, or Festival of Trees, because they know how important it is for us all to do our part helping those in need.
These are not easy times. In what used to be two small towns in the Naugatuck River Valley, with bustling industries employing thousands,
the United Way of Naugatuck & Beacon Falls was born through the insight and dedication of Robert and Anna Lee Van Allan, and their
friends, who saw a need and answered the call. Today, we have become two towns struggling to reinvent ourselves, with most of the big
industrial giants gone, but in their place, many small businesses and individuals who still see the need and answer the call. Thank you all!
With gratitude,
Dorothy Hoff

I would like to thank the Allocation Committee, the presenting
agencies and the United Way Board of Directors for a comprehensive
and successful funding campaign. The dedication and passion UW
volunteers’ exhibit is simply remarkable.

The allocation process in particular gives members an up close and
personal gateway into the lives of those it endeavors to aid. The range
of resources required by our agencies varies greatly, but if one fact is
certain it is that there is a growing need within our community to be
there for those facing adversity and in some cases desperate for help. With new initiatives such as the “ALICE” project we will need continued
ambition to keep pace with Naugatuck and Beacon Falls services. It was a pleasure serving as Allocation Chair the last 2 years. I truly
appreciate the attention, professionalism, and commitment my fellow
committee members demonstrated. I would especially like to thank
Executive Director Lisa Shappy for her guidance and experience over
my tenure in allocations.

While their top priority is raising their four children, Jimmy, Rachel, Matthew and Brian, they 2008 Caren G. Bouchard

He and Susan were coaches for Naugatuck Youth Soccer from 1998-2009. Presently, they are 2011 Kevin M. DelGobbo

helping out at the Bob Veillette Ziti Dinner. School and youth groups have been at the core of
their community service. Susan volunteered many hours at their children’s schools, including serving as Vice President of the Central
