AL April Newsletter
September 2015
As we approach our second anniversary as a community, I am filled with gratitude for our residents,
their families, and our team members. Together we have become the community of choice in
the Newport Beach/Costa Mesa area. It is fitting that National Assisted Living week is honored in
the month of September. The quality of life the model brings to retirement enhances all aspects
of one’s well-being. Vivante has the added benefit of fantastic amenities and cuisine, beautiful &
spacious apartments, and a robust activities program offering a vast array of social, recreational
and educational opportunities. Thank you to all of our wonderful residents for recommending
Vivante to your friends. Your satisfaction is our greatest accomplishment, and you continue to be
our best source of referrals.
Always the first Monday in September, Labor Day, also appropriately called the “workingman’s holiday”, is dedicated to
everyone in respect and appreciation for the work done in or outside of the home. True to tradition, we will celebrate with
an end of summer barbeque and live music. In commemoration of 9/11, and in honor of first responders, we have invited
the Costa Mesa Fire Department to enjoy a barbeque lunch at Vivante. Please join us at both events as we acknowledge
and honor the dedication and service of so many.
Mark your calendars for Sunday Brunch on September 13th from 11:30 a.m to 1:30 p.m., and The Rosh Hashanah Dinner
on Monday, September 14th at 5:00 p.m. Reservations can be made at the host station in The Mélange. The events page
in this addition of the Vivante Voice highlights many additional events and outings for your enjoyment this month. I wish
health and happiness for all as we enter into Fall and embark on our 3rd year as a Vivante family!
This lovely lady was born in Connecticut and spent winters in Manhattan
and Philidelphia. She went to Lincoln School on the Columbia University
campus, Buckingham Friends School in Lahaska, PA and West Philadelphia
Friends School in Philadelphia, PA. Her family moved to California in 1942
when her illustrator/painter/cartoonist father joined the Marine Corps.
When WWII ended, the family remained in California, where her father
became a sketch artist for 20th Century Fox.
After graduating from the Bishops School in La Jolla, she went on
to get a BA degree from UCLA. She and her late husband Hal were
married in 1950 and moved to Lido Isle in 1958. They raised their
son Greg and daughter Bridget there. Among other projects, she
served on the Orange County Grand Jury, volunteered as a therapist
in the Crisis and Suicide Prevention Center in what was then the Orange County Medical Center’s Mental Health Department, worked for
ENSIGN, the Santa Ana Register, the Daily Pilot, and published her own
magazine called Gentry. She is still active in many volunteer organizations, including the OC Museum of Art and Planned Parenthood.

This month we feature Jerry Turner who is a pioneer in the sports shoe business and has a wealth of fun stories
about his interaction with famous athletes. Jerry was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1935. He attended Omaha
Central High School - which was considered the best school in the state. He got his undergraduate degree at
Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. After graduation, Jerry joined the army for two years and
was fortunate enough to do duty as a Quarter Master in times of peace. From there, he went on to earn his
Masters degree at UC Berkley. At Wharton, Jerry met his wife who was the daughter of Michael Goldenberg,
the founder of Brooks Shoes. After graduation at Berkley, Jerry immediately moved to Baltimore to work for
his father-in-law at Brooks.
He recalls that he first thing he discovered about Brooks was that the company was nearly broke. At the time,
Brooks only products were shoes built with sporting hardware such as cleats or skate blades. Realizing the
company needed a wider market, Jerry was eyeing the running market as there were no specialized shoes
for this type of athletics. He was introduced to famed runner, Marty Liquori who also had ideas for creating
running products. As a runner, Marty had good ideas for shoes, but no idea how to proceed. He and Jerry
Jerry Turner
teamed up to create a new genre of shoe. At the time, sporting shoe soles were made from ‘blown rubber,’ a
heavy product with no ability to absorb the impact of running. Marty explained to Jerry that he needed a shoe
that would absorb the impact and give him some ‘recoil’ to help with long distance running. Jerry called a chemist at the Monarch Rubber
Company to explain their ideas. As it happened, the chemist was already experimenting with something similar. He created some sheets of
material made from Ethylene Vinyl Acetate or EVA. Jerry took the sheets, made shoes and provided them to Marty - who wore the shoes
and liked them so much that he brought in other famous runners to sponsor the Brooks shoe. Today, EVA is used in a myriad of sporting
products such as shoes, bicycle seats, ski boots, boxing gloves and fishing reels.
Brooks became the #1 running shoe company in the world. Jerry determined that celebrity endorsements were a great way to build brand
awareness and sell shoes. This took Jerry to the ballparks where he worked to gain shoe sponsors by working the clubhouses. He can tell
stories of his adventures in those clubhouses for hours. He favorite was when he was granted a chance to talk to Ted Williams. Ted was
sitting at his desk and rose to greet Jerry - wearing only his jock strap. All six-foot three and three hundred pounds. Another was how he was
rejected several times by Rod Carew - until Jerry’s three year old son Johnny was found flipping through a Playboy magazine with Carew.
“This is your son?” Carew said. “I’ll try your shoes.” He wore Brooks for the rest of his career. as did another famous ballplayer, Mickey Mantle.
With perseverance and hard work, Jerry managed to win over an entire ball club - the Pittsburg Pirates, who wore he shoes when they won
the World Series. He wrote down the sizes of every ball player on the team and built shoes for each player. As a shoe manufacturer, he
was able to make the shoes with the right team colors and do it quickly. Through this type effort, Brooks became the leading baseball shoe
company as well.
Unfortunately, Jerry’s success attracted the attention of somebody else, Phil Knight at Blue Ribbon Sports - the founder of Nike. Phil came to
Jerry, asking for Brooks to build him some shoes. Jerry shares that Phil soon asked him where he built his spikes for cleated shoes. Knowing
Phil would figure it out eventually, he told him. Within weeks, Jerry got the call from his manufacturer that Phil was in his waiting room...
When Brooks first built their running shoes, the athletic shoe market was 3% of all footwear sales. Today that market is nearly 80% of the
market. Between the severe financial demands of growth and years of copyright battles with Nike, Brooks Shoes ultimately went bankrupt.
Jerry went on to join a Chinese trading company who hired him to develop several successful new brands of shoes. He met his second wife
there and stands as a prime example of perserverance and determination. Jerry has three children. Susie Turner who is a top pro-bono
attorney in Washington, DC., Bobby Turner, a finanical advisor in Santa Monica who partners with Andre Agassi to build the nation’s top
charter schools and Johnny Turner who’s a market research professional in Charleston, SC. Glad to have you in the community Jerry!
Lets talk telephone! Several residents have received solicitations from AT&T
with offers to “save” them money if they switch to AT&T’s Uverse phone service.
The pitch is that they can reduce your monthly costs and provide a year of free
Internet by converting to their ‘digital’ service. First off, please understand that
we discourage the use of this service here because it requires a modification
to the wiring in your apartment. Not only that, you already have free Internet
from Vivante that is at least 20 times faster! Next, that low price they promise
is just a first year offer. The second year includes a $45 a month bump for the
Internet you’ll never use. If AT&T calls with a great offer to reduce your phone
costs, just say NO! That savings will cost you a lot in the long run. If you feel
your phone is costing too much money, please contact Mark Thompson for a
review of your phone service and a list of alternatives that might be available.
We are also hearing more reports about scam artists who are calling to claim
that your ‘transaction’ is missing important information about your bank account. The scammer tries to convince you that money is being sent to you and
they need your banking information to complete the transfer. Please NEVER give
away banking information to anyone who suprises you with a call like this. Before
doing anything, double check with everyone with whom you do business with
and with family members. Remember, when somebody on the phone or online
offers help, it usually means they’re trying to help themselves to your money.
Ask questions and get help from people you trust before doing anything!!
Vivante’s residents hold a meeting once a month to
discuss community issues in the absence of staff. You
are invited to ask questions, make suggestions, speak
freely with Council Members and our Ombudsman.
Staff is invited to join at the Council’s request and
may share updates within the Community, answer
questions and more. The meeting is located in the
CRO’s Nest.
You are encouraged to attend the next meeting on
Wednesday, September 16th at 2:00 p.m.
Our current council members are: Don Borthwick,
Georgiana McLeod, Bob Woodward, Catherine

Lizette Flores, Health Services Coordinator
Our employee of the month is Liz Flores. She is the
oldest of three children. Liz’s mom and dad immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico in the early 70’s. Her
mother is a special education assistant and dad is
a granite restoration expert. He recently worked on
The Tiffany Company’s store on Rodeo drive and
surprised Liz with a gift – the piece of granite with
Tiffany’s name engraved on it!
Liz was born in 1984 in Santa Ana where she’s lived
for most of her life. She was an avid softball player
growing up and went on to play varsity softball all four years at Saddleback
High School. After high school, Liz took a job in the banking business and
worked as a loan processor for nearly five years before choosing to move on
to something she enjoyed. She earned her LVN degree at the Pacific College
of Costa Mesa and took a job as a private duty care nurse.
Liz currently lives in Anaheim Hills with her boyfriend Daniel and their two
year old son, Sebastian. The two met when she was only eighteen. They
have known each other for thirteen years and have been together as a
couple for the past eight. Asked what happened after five years of friendship, she tells us that Daniel was a good friend with whom she confided in
regularly. They went out one night, talked for several hours and ultimately
discovered their love for one another.
She and Daniel are working hard at saving money for a new home. They’ve
tried a couple times to make a purchase, but tell us it is a struggle because
the affordable homes are selling in a matter of days. Together, she and her
family enjoy their opportunity to have play dates where they visit Disneyland, museums, kid parks and other hiking and sightseeing locations.
Liz came to Vivante after discovering our help wanted ad on Craigslist. She
first took work covering weekends part-time in the shores. As our needs
grew, she took extra shifts and grew into the job. Recently she was promoted
to Shores Health Services Coordinator and now works full time. Liz, you do
a great job and we truly appreciate your hard work. You certainly deserve to
be our Employee of the Month.
New Yoga Class - Please join us in welcoming Kathleen
Poulos to Vivante. For the next three months she will be offering a chair yoga class every Friday beginning at 9:30 a.m.
in Motion Fitness. She will be working alongside LeeAnna
to offer a well rounded hour of fitness and fun.
Water Aerobics - Lisa Alder offers a class at our beautiful
Splash saltwater pool every Tuesday and Thursday beginning at 10:30 a.m. Sally will be teaching on Friday at 10:30.
All are welcome. (We do offer a lift chair should you need
assistance with getting in and out of the pool). Please join
us. The deepest part of the pool is four and a half feet and
there is always someone in the water with you.
Reminiscence Wall for September - You may have noticed
the hallway just outside the Artist’s Palette and the changing exhibits from time to time. We are currently seeking old
family photos that you may wish to share. We are hopeful
to feature photos from the 20,’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and 60’s.
Please contact the activities office if interested in sharing.
The Cro’s Nest - Vivante offers a beautiful lounge setting on
the third floor. Each Thursday and Saturday, please join us
for a variety of live music. The Cro’s Nest is open from 4:00
p.m. - 6:00 p.m. and the live musicians perform from 4:30
p.m. - 5:30 p.m. We offer a full bar and complimentary appetizers. We have been bringing in some new musicians
and would love your feedback. We hope to see you!

Update on the Orangewood Backpack Project - We would like to thank
our residents for contributing to the backpack project that provided
50 new “return to school” backpacks for the Orangewood Children’s
Home in Orange. The backpacks were filled with new crayons, markers,
paper, pencils, pens, highlighters, water bottles, flash lights, scissors,
glue, calculators, and more. We appreciate your time and contribution
to the project and hope that we will offer an outreach into our local
community on a quarterly basis or as the needs arise. Thank you, thank
you everyone.
The Fun Zone and Pool - We are very fortunate to have a lovely area
equipped with two large wall mounted televisions, two computers, an air
hockey table, Xbox, Wii, games, puzzles, art supplies, books and more for
your visiting family members. The Fun Zone is provided for the visiting
children of the residents . We are hopeful that if there is a young child
visiting that they will be supervised. The pool is available for use by visiting guests however children under the age of 12 may not be unaccompanied as there is no lifeguard on duty. The pool is four and half feet at the
deepest point and a changing room and showers have been provided for
your convenience. (We suggest that you bring a towel with you.)
