The Groundbreaking Ceremony was held on January 22, 2013.
There will be 2 phases of development. The first will include baseball
fields, concession stands, and tennis courts to name a few amenities. Completion of Phase 1 is expected December 2013. Future amenities
include a jogging track, basketball courts and community center.
In an age when people are more tax-resistant than ever, the citizens of Youngsville stepped forward in November 2011 to approve a one-cent sales tax dedicated for
the purposes of constructing a place where sports tournaments can be held, kids can play and people of all ages can engage in activities together. The land itself will
be donated by one of the most community-committed businesses in the city, Young’s Industries.
The plans and design were approved by the Youngsville City Council in February, state grants have been applied for and a decision on those is expected in April. The
City plans on forging ahead with the new sports complex regardless of the outcome of grant approval and the project is scheduled for completion in the spring of

It’s a great place to retire. But it’s a great place to grow up, too.
Sugar Mill Pond, a traditional neighborhood development in Youngsville,
has made Where to Retire magazine’s short list of the 50 best masterplanned communities in the country, the publication announced Tuesday.
The complete list will be published in the July/August issue, which will be
on newsstands June 18.
Part of the development’s lure is affordable homes for both retirees and
young families and life that “revolves around an 8-acre lake with a halfmile jogging trail,” the magazine wrote. It reported only 200 of some 1,850
homes have been built on the community’s 509 acres. Home prices range
from $175,000 to $600,000.
Selections for the top 50 were made in 17 states — most were located in the
Sunbelt — but only Sugar Mill Pond made the short list from Louisiana.
Youngsville Mayor Wilson B. Viator Jr. said Sugar Mill Pond residents
include a “mix of retirees and young professionals” with a “very good crosssection of people looking for that type of living environment.”
“You can walk almost anywhere. Houses are close to the street. People tend
to visit with each other,” he said.
Teddy Beaullieu, who represented Sugar Mill Pond during its communications with the magazine’s review process, which took almost a year, said the development broke
ground in December 2004 and is in its third phase of construction. Eventually, he said, there will be 1,500 single-family, detached homes and 400 multifamily residences.
According to the magazine, the process began with more than 100 master-planned communities under consideration. Beaullieu said there were many back-and-forth communications between the development and the magazine. Selected developments varied in style and price. Half were “active-adult” communities, where minimum-age
standards were in place.
Chosen neighborhoods ranged in starting price from $80,000 for manufactured homes to single-family homes in the $120,000s, the magazine wrote.
The July/August issue is the “eighth biennial honor role” involving master-planned communities for Where to Retire, which has published six times annually since 1992.
