Fanzones, Cube, & Kick Wall at Octagon
Good to see the DCC get behind FIFA’s U20 World Cup
tournament in Dunedin. A Fever Pitch Fanzone will be set up
in the lower Octago, where a “Cube’ four sided entertainment
centre will enable folk to become involved, and meet mascot
Wooliam plus Ambassador Mike McGarry.
There will also be theme days to reflect the Culture of
the overseas teams taking part, and a chance to show soccer
skills in a ‘Kick Wall’, and a novel Walking Bus will go from
the Octagon to the Stadium for each game.
I remember at the All Whites versus Mexico Internat.
in Wellington, where spectators
strolled en masse up the CakeTin
concourse to the game, and it set up
a brilliant atmosphere prior to the
overall event, with Latin bands, live
Tango dancers, and great bunches of
trumpeting, singing, Mexican fans - it
was brilliant.
With some imagination you
can visualise a similar mob, led by a
pipe band of course, heading for the
Stadium.
And you can’t ignore the social side
of these occasions... On the Wellington Wharf, I had a thirsty beer, and who did I join in
the bar but NZ’s big Trio, John Adshead, Steve Sumner, and Allan Jones, and all of them
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
were keen to know how things were in Otago... PR men par excellence..
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
And,looking at my pic of Tommy Smith scoring against New Caledonia in
Dunedin, hey, that was a pretty special evening too. The big man timed it well - a
booming header in Injury time to win 2-1, and the crowd went bonkers....
Were you there ? That was in March 2013, a long time between drinks mate, so
make sure you top up your memory banks in the FIFA U20s in only a few weeks now....
and of course I don’t have to
ask....

Ellis Park
Big week for Tyrrell with a call
up to the Cook Islands national
team - incredible achievement.
In an effort to obtain an
international cap of his own for
whichever nation will have him,
the jealous Fraser Cameron is
about to embark on a global trek
that will see him farewell the club
he’s represented since he was
in his nappies, all the best Fras.
It was a tough lesson
for the Prems up against the
table-topping Caversham side at
Ellis Park. Wal’s boys battled
well for most of the match but
eventually went down 0-4 as
Cavvy were just too strong. Blair
and Tyrrell worked hard
throughout and Mr Cameron
picked up player of the day in
Ellis on
his send-off match.
Sunday
The ‘Melton Mowbray
Maradona’ Andy Lyndom gave
himself a birthday present with a
goal in the Seconds 5-4 win over Cavvy. This was a huge result for Peewee’s lads
against a team unbeaten in 27 matches. Peewee played it cool after the game but no
doubt he’ll be dancing on the tables at Brimstone tonight. Other goalscorers were Irish,
Woody with another 30 yard screamer, Fraser Hunter, & the veteran Damo courtesy of
his trusty shin.
The Thirds weren’t too bad against Northern and created plenty of chances but
went down 2-3. Malcolm McIver and Christian bagged goals, Pete was solid as ever in
goals, and Mal Furlan was POD.
It was boys up against men with Cavvy too strong for the young 4th Blacks side up at
Brockville. They conceded a bundle early but showed a good attitude throughout, with
John Madden in the midfield and Owen on the right flank fighting hard the whole match.
The 4th Blacks also went down, 1-2 in a shoddy match at Bayfield against a
cocky Melchester. The effervescent Hayden Baker scored the only goal for Lippy’s
boys. It was ugly for the Chargers at de Carle park against an athletic Tech team new
Page 4
to the grade, conceding in the first minute
and letting in another bunch in the first 30
minutes. Things tightened up a bit but a 0-8
scoreline wasn’t pretty. Tech even managed
more referee changes than goals. There
were some bright spots for Foz’s troops,
especially seeing the Browny class apparent
in recent recruit Andy.
The Stallions also had to stomp
around de Carle and lost to a sharp Tech
side 1-2. The opposition keeper kept the
Stallions at bay until Jason scored a belter.
Jono was a rock and picked up player of the
day.
Up against the Hobbits, the Originals
were in trouble early when their keeper went down with a season ending injury. In
stepped Nathan and he had a great game although he couldn’t prevent defeat - he wasn’t
helped by his team mates sneaking a couple past him. The Colts had another high
scoring thriller, ending 4-4 against Mosgiel on the Postage Stamp. Matt scored a brace,
Andrew scored again, and Gribs nabbed one too. No one could say exactly what Gaz
managed to do, but it must have been something decent as our esteemed El Presidente
picked up player of the day. The Moas didn’t concede - will stay unbeaten for at least 13
days after a strong bye performance.

Real Madrid fans had to pay €111 face value for crappy nosebleed seats for El Clasico.

direct free-kick taker in the world. Rarely misses, it's as good as a penalty.
Steven Thompson, captain of St Mirren, said he was "mortified" after a training ground

Southland Football
Latin Flavour for Invers...
The first weekend of May brings back the
Junior Competition to Southland Region.
Early morning Turnbull Thompson Park was
ready to receive the young players and
coaches from Southland clubs.
The turf was set up to Fun Football and
Youth Football, and Mini Football was played in
the grass.
Starting whistle at 9:30am, for Fun and
Mini football and Youth match at 10:30am.
There was a morning full of football, fun and
talent with total of 42 teams and 21 games in
the region – Old Boys, Thistle, Winton,
Southend, Waiopai, Queens Park and Junior
Wanderers.
We could see great surprises, with lots of talented payers, lots of goal, saves
and most important than everything for the day 1, a superb atmosphere all around. It’s
important for us to see those people committed with football, supporting their sons,
coaching, helping and creating “passion for Football”.
It´s part of our job, make it happen, so we are just getting ready to help coaches
and clubs with useful information so that we can find always more players, more
coaches, more referees, more talent and more

Promotion Relegation in the Scottish Championship
In response to questions regarding the above : The 10 clubs play 36 matches. The
champions are promoted to the Premiership and clubs in 2nd, 3rd and 4th enter twolegged play-offs. The winner of 4th v 3rd plays 2nd, with the winner of that tie up
against the club finishing 11th in the Premiership. The bottom club is automatically
relegated and the 9th-placed club goes into a play-off with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed
clubs from the League One.

Well Done Auckland, Champs Again...
Auckland City FC 1,
Team Wellington 1
(Auckland win 4-3 on penalties)
Auckland City FC have
qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup
for the seventh time after beating Team
Wellington 4-3 on penalties in the OFC
Champions League final in Suva.
Auckland, who won the
Champions League for the fifth straight
year, will now travel to Japan in
December to try and improve on their
incredible third place finish last year
where they brought home $3.22 million
in prize money.
At left happy Jake Spoonley, with Oceania Trophy, and
yes Neil, he’s another Milk Cup lad that did good...
Meanwhile, also in the World Club Cup, the minnows are biting in
CONCACAF, where a humble MLS side Montreal grabbed a surprise
first leg away 1-1 draw against Mexican giant, Club America in the huge
Aztec Stadium in front of 100,000 rabid fans. Montreal did well to get
past Alajuelense in the semi in Costa Rica, despite lasar attempts on
their keeper from the large volatile crowd.
Scots youngster Callum Mallace ( pic ) plays for Montreal,
and hopes that a record 60,000 Canadian fans can spur his side to a
result against the Mexican super-pros in the return leg, at the Olympic
Stadium. (I’ll bet that Auckland would like 60,000 fans behind them... )
Mallace, who hails from Torphichen, near Bathgate, and is an Airdrie supporter, has been
blown away by his time in Montreal, his home since 9 years old.
Playing alongside Nelson Rivas, Matteo Ferrari, Bernardo Corradi and Marco Di Vaio then
came World Cup winner Nesta.
The former AC Milan stopper is
now 36 but Mallace insists he’s still a
TV pundit, Nicol
class act and can’t wait to learn more

Green Island Premier Team versus Mosgiel. Once
again we took on the Plainsmen after a great
game five days ago. A tough ask for both teams
to repeat the Chatham Cup game but if you were
watching you would think it was just another two
half’s of Monday's game.
A very tough 1st half for both that a goal
would have settled either side but it was not to be.
Half time 0 – 0. Second half and more of the
same apart from we scored two goals, one to
Reid and the other to Ben. A problem occurred
when the Mosgiel crowd said there was a player
offside and we agreed but as we all know in
football, players, coaches and supporters don't
make the decision and you should always play to
the whistle.
The next whistle was a penalty when the
man in front was taken down in the box. Result 2 – 1 to GI. With three minutes to go
Mosgiel scored which resulted in a 2 all draw. A great game well played by all involved.

The Division One team
(Fletcher Cup) The second team turned up on Saturday
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
looking to go back to back for the first time in ages but after conceding a weak goal in
the first few minutes it looked like we might be in for a long day.
Todd, Tom and Sean worked hard to turn our good defence into

4-nil win
Premiers took on Roslyn at a
sundrenched Ellis Park.
There weren't a lot of clear cut
goal scoring opportunities for either
team in the first 75 minutes but for a
solitary goal to Seamus Ryder. The
2nd eventually came after a good run
down the right by Michael Hogan
eventually laying it on a platter for our
Finnish heart throb Viljami to score his
debut goal. A further 2 were dinked in
in the final minutes to make it 4 goals
to nil.
The Seconds suffered their
first defeat in 27 game going down to
Roslyn in a high scoring affair. We
played some good football at times
and unfortunately came down to som
weak defending at profligacy at the
other end. We'll pick up our socks and
move on to next week in the
knowledge we've better ability than that
we showed in the weekend.
The 3rds beat Roslyn White 12 nil at altitude in Brockville. Great effort and we
will look to push on again next week preserving an unbeaten record.

Northern AFC
The Gardens
Northern vs Grants Braes Fletcher Cup tie :
The Oval, Saturday
We played Grants Braes at Forrester and it
was a cracking game full of goals. Was a great
game to be involved in and definitely wasn't a
boring game with the game ending with a
Northern win 7-4.
Both teams were very attacking
through out the game. We started off very poor
for once and was punished early when we
conceded the 1st goal of the game. We then
found our feet and got back into the game with
3 goals to make it 3-1 at half time.
The second half was much the same
as the first with both teams playing attacking
football, and in the end there was another
seven goals scored. I was very impressed with
the boys on the attack, we have struggled in
front of goal in recent weeks so it was good to be so clinical in front of goal. Was very
encouraging to see things we practiced in training pay off and get us goals
Once again hard to give man of the match. Ross McGregor was very good in
midfield all day as usual, Will Shaw and Jo Wesney were a big threat going forward. But the
two best players were Tim Graham at left back who produced three assists and Louis
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
Peyroux yet again who got himself a hattrick. Grants Braes also played somevery nice

football in the middle of the park.

three Woman's teams had
wins last Sunday with the
Premier ladies finishing their
first round undefeated with a
1-0 win over Roslyn,the
Swans had an emphatic win
over Varsity B 4-3 and the
Senior woman beating GI at
De Carle park 2-0.
Premier men were at
the Caledonian up against
University. Aaron was
enthusiastic about being able
to select from a full strength
squad. The Caledonian
surface was in perfect
condition for good football.
Tech went one up
and continued that way
though the day. Tom made a
clearance high in his own half which went straight to a Varsity forward who took his
chance to chipTom to pull a goal back and the game ended 6-2 to Tech.
The 2nds played the early game against Varsity. The boys had all the chances
in the first half and could quite easily have been two up in the first 20 minutes but it
was Varsity who hit the net first from a crossed ball that got in behind the defence 1-0
Varsity. Tech hit back early in the second half to go 2-1 up, then a penalty awarded to
Varsity made it 2-2 but Tech had the last say in the 88th minute to finish the game off
3-2.
Craig's 3rds played GI and looked to continue on their winning streak at
Culling Park. The 3rds have been on fire and today was going to be no different. Four
goals from Chris Goodship set the standard with goals coming thick and fast. Final

Stu's 4ths had a tough game up
against Green Island at Sunnyvale lots of
goals and points shared with a 4-4 draw.
Both Tech 5th teams had good wins with the
Scarfies scoring 8 against Roslyn at De Carle
Park and the Young 5ths down at Balclutha
recording their first win of the season 5-2.
Colts were also at De Carle park up a
against old foes the Stallions. The Colts also
on form this season undefeated so far knew
this was going to be no easy encounter. Colts
went one up with in form striker Gerry Finnie
nudging one over, then the Stallions pulled one
back early in the
Second half. The Colts continued to
pressure the Stallions goal and eventually
managed to score one more when Finnie
converted again to make the score 2-1 to the
Colts.
The Frotters were on number 2 At Culling and unfortunately were the only Senior team
at the club not to get any points this weekend going down to

The Roslyn Women Premier side welcomed
Dunedin Tech to the home of Football this week at
Ellis Park. On paper it was the top of the table clash
and it truly lived up to the hype.
Tech had the much better first half but couldn't
put anything past our player of the day and keeper
Catlin Taylor-Lynch. Going into the half the score
still sat at 0-0 and we felt lucky. Second half was
rather different, we had a lot of the play in which we
were able convert from getting a lovely Una Madden
goal.
This put us in the lead with 25 minutes left on
the clock. After injuries truly testing our bench, we
had to shuffle around a bit sadly conceded 2 goals
in the last 10-15 minutes. Full credit to both teams,
it’s a fixture we look forward to next time round. Uni
next week in the Knock Out cup.
A classy performance from the Women's
reserves this week against Northern. With our full
squad available for the first time this season it was good to see what we are capable of
at full strength.
The girls passed the ball around really well and created many chances early.
12mins in and Kim Fraser netted herself a Hat-trick! Things were looking good.
A flurry of first half goals followed scored by Lily Robin, Jess Harwood, KerriAnn Jones,Beth Fitchett and Emma Cooper, and two more for Kim Fraser. The Second
half produced goals from Kelli
Skipage and one more each for Beth Fitchett and Kim

Fraser. 13-0 the final tally, with

Page 24
DCC Long Term Plan – Football South Submission
Football South is the
governing body for football in the lower
half of the South Island from Timaru to
Invercargill. We are a not for profit
incorporated society body affiliated to
the national governing body, New
Zealand Football(NZF). NZF is one of 11 country members of Oceania Football
Confederation (OFC), and in turn a country member of the world football
governing body, FIFA. Currently our Head Office is housed with Sport Otago, at Logan
Park in Dunedin.
Football South has a playing base of approximately 8500 paying members, of
which around 4500 are based in Dunedin.
Football is now the largest participation sport in Dunedin. Football is played
from 4 years to over 50 year by males and females and is continuing to grow.
Football South would like to thank the Dunedin City Council for their initiative in
starting a conversation in conjunction with Sport Otago, late last year, around the current
use and future needs at Logan Park.
This facility is becoming increasingly popular and used by multiple sports and
this is now putting pressure on this area. We support the plan by Otago Cricket to
“Light Up the Oval” as part of an integrated, multi-sport plan for the whole Logan Park
precinct. The redevelopment and continual upgrade of Logan Park should be viewed as
an important component of the Council’s Economic Development Plan.
We had always hoped that we would be able to create a home of football within
Logan Park, utilising FIFA development money to help with this. We are now taking a
slightly different attitude to this. Following discussions with council staff and Sport Otago
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
and hearing the plans that other
sports codes have for developing their sport at Logan
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
Park, it is our feeling that Logan
Park may not be able to cater for all the growth that is
anticipated, alongside so many other potential developments. We have started
discussions about other possible options that will benefit both football and Dunedin
City.
We have been undertaking consultation with our clubs and key stakeholders
and from this work we now believe that we may be best able to help ourselves and other
sports codes by making the decision to move our sport hub away from Logan Park to
another part of Dunedin.
Football South’s number one priority is growing and developing football in the
city. We see that if we could utilise current FIFA Goal Project development funds
(US$600,000 : NZ$790,000) to help develop an artificial surface area alongside multiple
fields on one site, with on-site facilities, it would lead to a resource that would be
cost effective, efficient and well utilised.
We have identified the following:
A dedicated all year round Home of Football Centre would offer a community focal point
with quality surfaces ( one artificial pitch is equivalent to approx. 6 natural grass
pitches). Football has become an all year round sport with much development work
Page 31
Page 25
taking place during the summer, but
with limited access to grounds and
most goal posts being removed.
Winter would have fewer cancellations
– typically a few weekends and many
midweek practice nights are lost with
weather disruptions on the existing fields. Last year was particularly bad.
Dunedin is now one of the only major centres in New Zealand that does not have an
artificial football turf. These are seen as tactical assets in other regions. We project
thousands of additional users will benefit annually if we had a dedicated home of football
in the city.
An artificial turf can be used for futsal, school and community based
programmes. In Term 1 2015, 385 teams (approx. 2700 children) took part in our Futsal
School Leagues at Edgar Stadium and we understand that the Edgar Centre is nearly
reaching capacity.
More people stay involved in football and this benefits the community and
society through the health and lifestyle benefits of exercise, activity, and socialisation as
described by SPARC. (now Sport New Zealand)
A home of football would provide options for players and for DCC as pressure
would be taken off fields during wet weather. It could also lead to the potential
rationalisation of some current parks, reducing maintenance and upgrade costs for
DCC.
We know from our club’s feedback that some grounds have long term
maintenance issues, some have clubs constantly competing for time, with other codes
and it is difficult for clubs to get year round playing space in the city. Our concept could
help address some of these difficulties.
The purpose of this submission to keep DCC informed and indicate our desire
to work with council as we progress this concept further.
Football South, together with New Zealand Football, FIFA and Sport NZ, would
like to work with the DCC to promote a closer working relationship between football and
the council, and to coordinate the needs of football into the future by exploring a possible
home of football as a possible future partnership.
We are asking that the concept of a home of football goes into your long term
plan and are seeking a commitment from Council to help Football South work with DCC
on a rationale for the future utilisation of Tahuna Park or other possible sports field
options .
We wish to express our willingness to work alongside DCC to achieve best use
of sports facilities in the City. A commitment to this long term project would enable robust
discussion and a partnership to develop to ensure best outcome for the city and football
in the South.
