Smoot History
Founded in 1822 in Alexandria, Virginia under the name J.H.D. Smoot.
Smoot Building Solutions has been through many changes over the years,
including name changes such as W. A. Smoot, Smoot and Co. and Smoot
Lumber. The company sold lumber, coal, sand, gravel, salt and plaster over
the years, with the mainstay being high-end millwork and mouldings.
Over the years Smoot has worked with such entities as the White House,
Capital, Smithsonian, and Mount Vernon along with individuals from
Congress and the Supreme Court.
Smoot assisted with projects such as:
• Building the windows for the George Washington National Masonic
Memorial. This project lasted from 1922-1932 and required over 100,000
board feet of Idaho White Pine lumber to complete.
• Providing the lumber to build the bleachers for John F Kennedy’s
funeral procession.
• Rebuilding the arched windows for the Smithsonian’s Arts & Industries
Building in the late 1980’s.
• Running all of the mouldings for the Ice Cream Room in the Museum
of American History.
• Replicated mouldings from Mount Vernon for the Mount Vernon
Ladies Association.
