Round Table Italy-Russia
"Chemical Technologies: Perspectives of Development"
June 4— -7— 2012, Ivanovo (Russia)
From 4th till 7th June 2012, about 30 participants gathered in Ivanovo State University of
Chemistry and Technology (ISUCT), Ivanovo (Russia). Among them, in approximate equal
proportion, were well known and highly respected both Italian and Russian Scientists as well as
Scientists of the Ivanovo State University of Chemistry and Technology. Some officials were
most important, specifically, Prof. Oskar I. Koifman, Corresponding Member of Russian
Academy of Science, Rector of the Ivanovo State University of Chemistry and Technology; Prof.
Pietro Fre', the Scientific Counselor of the Italian Embassy in the Russian Federation; Prof.
Teodoro Valente, President of the National Interuniversity Consortium of Sciences and
Technologies of Materials (INSTM).
The rest of the participants included very much distinguished scientists from Scientific
Centers of both countries in particular: Prof. Anatoliy G. Zaharov, the Head of Solution
Chemistry Institute of Russian Academy of Science named after G.A. Krestov (ISC RAS,
Ivanovo); Prof. Arkadiy M. Kolker, Deputy Director on research of ISC RAS, Ivanovo; Prof.
Salvatore Coluccia, the Vice-Rector of the University of Turin, Prof. Valentin A. Sharnin, the
Vice-Rector on Research Work of ISUCT; Prof. Vladimir V. Rubkin, the Vice-Rector on
Academic Work of ISUCT, Prof. Sergey A. Syrbu, the Vice-Rector of International
Collaboration of ISUCT; Dr. Boris L. Gorberg, the Head of ion-plasma laboratory of ISUCT;
Prof. Elena F. Sheka, the Principal Research Worker Peoples' Friendship University of Russia
(Moscow), Prof. Cesare Camillo Oliva, the Responsible of the EPR Group of the University of
Milan, Prof. Maria Letizia Terranova, the Head of Department of Rome University of "Tor
Vergata".

The Round Table is organized to develop and strengthen scientific and technological
cooperation between scientists of Italy and Russia in mutual interesting directions: advances in
materials science, new porphyrin-based materials introduction and development of chemical
technologies in the textile industry (technologies for fixing of dyes on fabrics by the use of ionplasma processes and designing of the corresponding equipment), technologies of cultural
heritage saving, nanotechnologies, problems of environment preservation, academic mobility in
ecological and chemical education.
Within two day work of the Round Table on the 5th and 6th June 2012, 26 reports on
topics of the Round Table were delivered and discussed. The list of reports is at the end of the
Memorandum.
During the Round Table work the current status of the Italian-Russian collaborations was
reviewed from many different perspectives, it was found to be very much extended, ramified and
proficient. The close scientific ties between the Italian research centers and ISUCT, the Lipetsk
State Technical University and the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (Moscow), bring
considerable contribution into the development of chemistry and chemical engineering for the
mutual benefit.
Yet, there was general consensus that it can be further improved and amplified. This
should occur both by strengthening the financial and logistical support of existing joint ventures
and by starting new ones in new research fields besides those that have been so far the traditional
focus of the common work between the two countries.

Actions and Recommendations
1. At the end of Round Table an Agreement was signed between INSTM and Ivanovo State
University of Chemistry and Technology (ISUCT) in order to establish a reciprocal
exchange of post-doctoral fellows among the signing institutions. It is stressed that this is
the first time that an agreement is signed for the awarding to Western European young
scientists of post-doctoral positions in university closed to INSTM and ISUCT.
2. The attendants recognize the value of the meeting for the improvement and extension of
the existing collaborations among the scientists of the two countries both in fundamental
science and in applications, science and technology driven. It is generally believed that
even such as the present Round Table could take place on a regular basis, involving
disciplines other than physics and chemistry. It would be extremely valuable if the Round
Table appointment would be associated with monothematic schools devoted to young
people (PhD students and post-docs). A permanent committee might be established to
organize these activities provided the financial support is available.
3. It is understood the importance of an exchange of information about the technological
abilities by medium/small size niche industries available in the two countries. It is
proposed that a certified list of such capabilities is prepared and offered by each country.
