This TellTales report is the last I will be writing as
Commodore, as I am completing my term and
will be writing my TellTales articles and sitting on
the Board next year as Past Commodore.
It has been an exciting year with a lot of work
done by the various officers and their
committees. Of particular note is the significant progress on the
Finger Replacement Project, the stellar results of the Juniors in
the sailing regattas they entered, and the many happy kids, parents
and grandparents that were involved in the Sailing School.
We had several well-attended special events, most notably the
standing room only talk by Jeanne Socrates on her single-handed,
unassisted circumnavigation of the world. The feat was amazing,
but the fact that she was the oldest woman ever to complete it
really added to the accomplishment. Thank you to all the club

members that put together the greeting and
presentation on such short notice, and did our
club proud by being such good hosts.
November 2013 NOTICE This year’s Round Saltspring Race was another
great success. All net proceeds were directed to
the Junior program, and it had the biggest surplus
we have ever had. I look forward to an even
better race next year, as Mark Strongman has sent
out a survey to this year’s participants that
yielded some interesting suggestions.

would have been ideal, but the ones that
happened were enjoyed by all that attended. I
encourage everyone with a boat they can go away
on for the weekend to come to the cruises next
year. They are a good reason to get out on your
boat, if you need one, and a great way to get to
know more people. For novice cruisers they are also a great way to take away some of the
concern about trip planning, and you are sure to
get as much advice as you want from the more
experienced cruisers.

Thanks to Lynn Clark and her crew, as well as
Emcee Bob Jones. And we still have the annual
Christmas Party & Boat Light-up to look
forward to before the calendar rolls over to 2014.
Back to business. The AGM will be on Tuesday
November 26th this year. Among other things,
this is when we have our elections for next year’s
Board of Directors for the Sailing Club. The
Agenda for the meeting has already been emailed to members and is reprinted on this page. Please
be sure to attend. Also, on the next page of
TellTales is the slate of nominations developed by
the Membership Committee. You will note that
we still do not have a volunteer for the position of
Fleet Captain Dinghy. Please consider volunteering for the position, or suggesting someone to
Derek Castle, who is heading up the Committee.

Board of Directors Nominations 2013-­‐2014 The following Members have been nominated by the Nominating Committee to serve on the Board of Directors of the Club for the next year in the positions stated. They will be proposed at the Annual General Meeting to be held at the Lions Club Hall, 103 Bonnet Avenue, on Tuesday, November 26, 2013. A big thank you also goes to
Susannah Devitt, who is stepping down after
years of dedicated and excellent service as the
Clubhouse Booking Coordinator. I’m happy to
announce that this role will now be ably filled by
Candace Brochmann. ■

The waiting list for moorage at
the club is heavy in the 48-foot
range with another boat at 41
feet. We have many variable
length slips available on D dock
which are side tie. Side tie slips
on D dock tend to be smaller
boats where beam is a
consideration. We still have 30 foot slips available
as well as a 34.

The Oktoberfest Pub Night on
October 18th was ably hosted by
Karen Laidlaw, Victoria
Skinner, Aly Markert and Diane
Lugsdin in my absence. Some 45
members enjoyed delicious
homemade canapes, dips and
other nibblies, along with
German beer provided by Patrick Beattie.
We actually had two Fall Work Parties this year.
The rainy original on Saturday November 2nd
drew about 55 people in their rain gear. Diane
Lugsdin and Karen Laidlaw were stellar
organizers of the coffee, juices, fruit and muffins
served mid-morning (no lunch this time). Many
thanks go to Kim Laidlaw and all the other
outdoor crew who pitched in to set up tables and
chairs. A second work party returned next day on
Sunday – about 15 landscapers and Bob Jones’
group – and were served by Victoria Skinner and
Lynn Clark. And still another group including
David Questo, Heinz Vitovec and Don Rose
arrived to work on slips.

entire weekend. Some of Bob Jones’ dock crew took advantage
of dry weather on Friday, while others turned out on a sunny
Sunday to do foreshore tasks or grounds work. Still, many
intrepid volunteers showed up on a stormy Saturday and tackled
both indoor and outdoor jobs. Thanks to one and all! ■

A few odds and ends for this
month.
NOTICE: SEASONAL WATER SHUT-­‐OFF ON DOCKS I found our dock carts on sale
at Buckerfields so brought four
of them. We now have nine
carts of the same type, however
this still means that they should
be returned clean to the storage area after use.
The water will be shut off for the winter season on the Sailing Club docks on or about November 19th, unless a cold snap requires earlier shut-­‐off. During the shut-­‐off season, please follow these fire safety directions … IN THE EVENT OF A FIRE: For some weeks now a Gentle Genie has been
clearing the docks of shells and debris – our
docks always look so good. I can now report that
our Genie is Les Price who has been seen on the
docks with his blower. Thank you Les for all
your efforts.
The notice regarding the water system on this
page can also be found on the gate. Please check
and remember the locations of the main valve,
the hydrant vaults and the hose cabinets and be
guided accordingly.
This year’s Fall Work Party on the docks was a
protracted affair. Norman Rothwell read the
weather well and turned out on Friday afternoon
to drill and pound a hundred spikes on C Dock.
We abandoned the heavy rain Saturday and
returned Sunday with three competent teams to

at Saltspring Island Sailing Club Pleasure Craft Operators Certificate (PCOC) Nov 13, 20, 27 This basic course will prepare boaters to get the required Personal Watercraft O perating Card, and is a prerequisite for the Boating Essentials Course to be held January to March, 2014. Course fee of $50 includes materials and registered PCOC card. If you’re unable to attend the course on these dates, call for information o n future courses to be offered. Arne and Barb Hetherington, who moved here
earlier in the year from Kelowna, and their
sailboat Dixey-Rose
Douglas and Kim Woolcock, who are also
relative newcomers to Saltspring, and their sailboat
Gitano II.
Radio Operator’s Certificate Maritime (ROC-­‐M) Dec 10, 12, 17 Sunshine Wilde, who was an Associate member
and has upgraded her membership to Regular
status. Sunshine has moved her sailboat Sweetheart
into our docks.
Completion of this course will earn the required Radio Operator’s Certificate Maritime (ROC-­‐M) for operating a VHF radio transmitter onboard your boat. Call for details. To register, call Laura Dafoe 250-­‐537-­‐8804 Anthony Brogan who was formerly a Member
several years ago and is now reactivating his
membership. Tony sails his J-30 Radiant Heat,
which will be familiar to Round Saltspring racers.
Please make a point to welcome these new and
not-so-new newcomers to our Club and on the
docks.
With these new memberships minus the usual few
resignations at year end, our membership now
stands at 180 Regular, 14 Associate and 24 Junior
members.
As the end of this month will mark the conclusion
of my two-year term as Secretary and a Board
member, I would like to take this opportunity to
thank all those who have been of great assistance
to me during this time. We are very fortunate to
have a great body of talent and expertise in the
Club and it has been a pleasure to have been a part
of it. ■

The afternoon workshop with

was well received. Twenty-two
attendees, including three ladies,
received good advice about
mechanical matters. Thank you to
Maggie Snee for arranging to bring Charles across
the water and to Duart Campbell for helping
Maggie out.
Saltspring Island Sailing Club is proud to present Cookie Cutter Chronicles
Homeward Bound: The Last Leg Peter McMartin and Connie Morahan Don’t forget our great cruising event on Saturday,
November 30th, with cruising speakers Peter
McMartin and Connie Morahan, “Cookie Cutter
Chronicles.” This should be of interest to all,
whether you’re considering a blue water cruise or
just want to hear a great sea tale.
The next Club cruise is a self govern New Year’s
Eve gathering at Montague Harbour on Galiano on
December 31st. The cruisers will return to the
Sailing Club for the usual annual Happy New Year
Club Social and Hot Rum Race.
Peter and Connie recently returned from a 10 year voyage around the South Pacific, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. They undertook this voyage on their Peterson 36, Cookie Cutter. Join them on their final leg as they sail from Kudat, Borneo, through the Philippines and Japan, and across the North Pacific from Hokkaido to Vancouver Island. Their presentation will include glimpses of undersea life, scenic Hong Kong and details of weather patterns underway. Everyone welcome, refreshments available. To the Board of Directors and the membership,

our club by keeping our reciprocals up to date on

The club’s finances remain consistent with earlier
reports to the membership. In the fiscal year just
ended, lower than expected moorage revenues and
quicker progress on the finger replacement project
than originally estimated have created a modest
shortfall from budget. A complete report of the
2012-13 cash flow results will be presented at the
AGM later this month.
Projections now are that the line of credit will be
(very briefly) paid out in November 2017 when
2017-18 dues are collected, with net debt incurred
for the dock and dredge project retired by
November 2020. ■

Two SISC racers made the trip to Hornby Island
for the Western Canadian Championships in
October for a weekend shrouded in fog and
marked by stiff competition. The Friday practice
was in light wind and with fog so dense that
Denman Island was invisible. Racers who had
planned to fly in from points east were unable to
get flights that could land and missed the event.
Race day saw good wind and lots of lumpy
water. The very well prepared Hornby fleet
dominated. Ole Anderson found his tuning for
the lumps and pressed the leaders at times. The
highlight of the day for the Saltspring crew was
when Ole rounded the first mark in the lead with
me hot on his tail in second. It was not to last
however as we were eventually hunted down
with Ole being literally knocked out of the lead at
the last windward mark by a starboard tack

win. Finally a lucky
wind shift on the last
leg allowed me to
notch my second win
of the series, passing
my brother just at the
finish line. Ole also had a strong
last day and we both finished in the top half of
the fleet, 4th and 7th. Bob Lewis, from
Vancouver, brought his unfinished Brit Pop, to
the event for us all to ogle. Brit Pops have won
the last two World Championships. Ole was
totally impressed with the carbon fin on the
boat and we are going to be building new
molds and investigating vacuum bagging
during our building program this winter.

my boat and tune to a
“T”, and I managed a
first and a second before
the race course was again
moved outside the
breakwater. At the end of
the first day the first
three spots were solidly
in the hands of the locals. The Dive Lodge where
we were staying was right on the regatta site in
Ford’s Cove and they provided all the meals so
the whole fleet sat down to dinner together. We
were a very convivial group and well fed.
Also this winter we are going to be calling on
the racing group for help on the water. As a
fleet we need more practice in crowded
conditions, so be prepared to help us in the
bump and grind of an afternoon starting
practice and some short course races. If we are
going to win we are going to need your help so
stand by for the call! ■
Day two dawned with less wind but plenty to
race so were back at it again. With slightly less
lumps I was able to move up the fleet, helped by
a series of good starts including one port tack

My term as Fleet Captain is
ending and I’d like to report on
our activities and say thank you
to our many volunteers, the
Juniors, our instructors, the
maintenance, sailing and Junior
coordinators, the parents and
club members. All of you can
take pride in having supported a top-notch
program. Some of the 2013 key events …

Junior Room was organized and the sails and
equipment are put away ready for 2014, with
new shelves.
Docks were cleaned and pressure washed,
dinghies tied down for winter, Opti’s on dinghy
rack.
Safety Boat Tabasco on the dock, likely its last
year as it is getting old and well worn and tired.
White boat and Dr Dre in parking lot and shed
– thanks to Philippe Erdmer.
Dinghies were bought. One new club 420, one
new Opti and one used Opti, sails and rigging.
The club also sold two old yellow Lasers to
Junior members. Spring repairs to dinghies and
ongoing maintenance, boats are now put away
for the winter – thank you Work Party
volunteers.
Funds were raised by Round Saltspring in
2013, in the form of cash and sails from UK
Sails. Some of the funds were used to pay
coaches and remainder is left for next year.
Applications for Federal Employment
Subsidies, Parks and CRD were done but we
were not successful in receiving funds.
Fundraising at the Swap Meet Junior table,
Bottle refund from Round Saltspring, and other
generous club member donations.
The Sailing School this year had five instructors
(six in 2012) returning to teach and all would
like to return in 2014, except for Hannah. After
seven years teaching for us, Hannah is moving
to other employment – thank you Hannah!
Sailing School courses in 2013 were offered
from first week of July to end of August.

Safety activities included marine safety kits for
chase boats, safety training, Junior code of
conduct, incident document forms and a sail
safety plan. The result was a safe year with
little damage to boats and a good paper trail.
The Vancouver Island Secondary School
Sailing League (VISSL) this Spring was the
second event. The club provided the boats and
the kids self-funded the rest. This is a source of
Juniors for the club and is well received by the
community.
At the Tuesday and Thursday night Fun Sails
and August Junior Week, the Juniors learned
race skills. A big thanks to Greg Slakov and
Martin Herbert, the coaches and the club
volunteers
Regattas attended included the VISSL, Spring
Victoria and the September event at Mill Bay.
Our club performed very well.
A final thank you to all the supporters of this
important program, which allows the club to give
back to the community. The Junior program is a
source of new sailors and ultimately new club
members.
Juniors were the start of our club and I am fortunate to have been a part of the 2013 program. ■

But once in a while, I have to give you a challenge. A
few hints should help … this light is very close to
home on an island with no ferry service. Most of you
have passed it many times. From this point you can
see Galiano, Mayne and Pender Islands, and the
point itself shares a name with a non-waterfront
Saltspring park. Get out your charts, and for a $25
gift certificate to Louise’s great gear stash, name the

Editor’s Log
Well, the bunk linens and summer jackets and uneaten potato
chips have been off-loaded from the boat, and it’s time to dust off
our winter task list for maintenance and upgrades. Even if we don’t
cruise or race throughout the year, every season is still boating
season – it’s just that some seasons are for playing and others for
working and dreaming (the folks who put on the off-season boat
shows have that one figured out)!
The lively Commodore’s Banquet was a wonderful kick-off to the
season of longer nights and festive get-togethers, and the December
TellTales will feature lots of photos of the banquet
and club awards. Meantime, I hope to see lots of
members out for our Annual General Meeting
and Christmas Party.

that at this time last year we had our Christmas Boat Light-up on
our shiny new docks for the first time. At our 2011 Christmas
Party, the marina was dark and empty – what was left of it – and I
really missed the festive lights. Our traditional Boat Light-up is a
fun way to get into the spirit of the season, and I encourage
everyone who moors at our beautiful marina to celebrate by
decorating your boat. Let’s see the marina sparkle this year!
