Practical Information

➢ It is the main building where administration offices are located.
➢ It holds most of the classrooms (8 classrooms in total, 2 lecture rooms and a computer room) and offices
(Director‘s office, Career & Professional Development Center, Academic Department , External Relations
Office, Administration and IT offices).
The buildings in Trafalgar Street are open the whole school year, from September to July, and closed
during Christmas, Easter and bank holidays

Accommodation
Finding accommodation in Barcelona is quite easy but nevertheless, we advise our summer school
participants to start looking for accommodation as early as possible. The international office will try and
help you find appropriate housing. The nearest areas of Barcelona to our campus are: Bario Gotico,
Eixample and Borne.

STUDENT RESIDENCES LOCATED NEAR THE SCHOOL:
Residencia Onix:

The exact location is Carrer Sardenya 101-137. The nearest metro station is ARC DE TRIOMF (walking
distance: 5 minutes). Marina station is also very closed (7 mins aprox), both on the red line. There is also
Tetuan (purple line) that is about 10 minutes away.
Every room in Residencia Onix has a kitchen. There is no restaurant in the Residence and no meal services.
There are vending machines available 24 hours for snacks. The location is secure and since it is located in a
residential area, all main services are available in less than 5 minutes walk (food stores, gym, bus…)
Residencia Roca: www.residenciaroca.com – A little far away from ESEC – good location
and good value for money
The exact address is c/ Ciutat de Balaguer, 65, Barcelona. It is located very near Plaza Bonanova. The
nearest metro stations: PUTXET, AND TIBIDABO – are about 5-10 minutes walking, and there are bus stops
of several bus lines that connect to Plaza Urquinaona at only two minutes from the Residence.
The Residence provides complete food service: bed and breakfast, half pension or full pension, but clients
are not allowed to use the kitchen. There are several refrigerators for the use of the residents (one in each
flat). Summer 2011 prices based on one double room per person (+ 8% taxes and + 4, 74 euro / day for
every option below for a single room):

Residencia San Marius: www.sanmarius.com - Not very easy to access from ESEC
The residence is located on Travasera de Gracia 22, near the Casanovas intersection, next to Diagonal and
the plaza Frances Macia. (Entrance of Diagonal) The closest metro stop is: HOSPÌTAL CLINICO (five minutes
from the residence and 10 minutes from the Urquinaona place).
The residence has a capacity of 18 rooms and 32 places. The group price is 20 Euros per person and per
day, plus 6 Euros for meal service. It is a little far away from the school but offers good value for money and
a good location.

first-class services & facilities offered
The residence Melon District Marina is located in Sancho de Avila, 22, and the nearest metro station is L1
MARINA, same line (red) as Urquinaona. Accessing the residence is quite closed from the school and is a
little difficult to access but with the possibility of using public transports.

Rooms are grouped into Melon Flats. Each Melon Flat includes 10 rooms with en-suite bathrooms and a
shared Cooking Lounge. The Cooking Lounge is to share with 10 flat mates, and offers a convenient, wellequipped multifunction space: private space in the fridge, electric hob, freezer
microwave, electric oven, flat screen TV 42", air conditioning, heating. ..
Different types of accommodation are offered: single room, twin room, single studio, superior studio,
duplex with prices starting at 50 Euros a night (please check their website for group prices and additional
information)

Be extra careful if staying in either of these hostels because of their location
(Barrio Gotico) especially at night time.

USEFUL ADVICES:
Please note that in some districts of downtown Barcelona tourists have to be extra careful. We would
advise you to use a lot of caution when visiting the following neighborhoods and districts at all times and to
preferably go out with friends and stay together especially at night time:

Barcelona Safety - Learn and Apply The Safety Guidelines
1) Pick pockets prefer to choose easy victims - if you look like you're paying attention and don't have any
valuables on show it's less likely that you will be pick-pocketed.
2) Only carry around as much money as you need for that day no more. Leave valuables that you aren't
going to use on the day in the hotel safe.
3) Do not carry around a rock-sack on your back - be especially aware of this on the metro. Pickpockets
have been known to steal from rock-sacks on people's backs when on the metro. If you have a rock-sack
wear it the other way around with the bag in front of you.
4) Do not have a camera slung around your neck (or any other expensive items like video cameras)
5) Keep any valuables out of sight.
6) If you need to look up anything on a map go into a Café and sit down rather than look up your
destination in the streets. This is like advertising that you are new to the area and a tourist and that is
exactly what pickpockets are looking for.
7) In Cafés and restaurants pay attention to your bags/purses and wallets
8) Pay particular attention at metro/bus and train stations. Stations are hotspots for pickpockets and
thieves.
The tip here is to keep your purse / wallet out of sight. Keep your tickets separate from your purse or
wallet. If you can obtain your tickets in advance of your arrival in Barcelona (see the tip below) that way
you do not need to take out your purse or wallet to pay for tickets.
Buy a transport pass that covers all your transportation needs before you arrive in Barcelona e.g
the Barcelona Card. This way you do not need to handle money to pay for tickets when you are travelling
on the public transport in Barcelona and it will also mean you are much less of a target.
9) Pick pockets work very fast. One second they are there and the next they're gone. Just be aware of the
people around you and pay attention to what they are doing. Pick pockets are often looking at one thing tourists and tourists bags - they are not interested in anything else around them except maybe the police.

If you keep your eyes open you will become more aware of when to keep your guard up. The most common
place for pickpockets is Las Ramblas and in particular at night there are pickpockets that are posing as
prostitutes.
10) Take out a travel insurance policy - make sure that you meet the terms of the policy before you leave
(some policies require that you can prove your belongings are worth what you say they are worth).
11) Keep your passport safe and make copies of it. Spanish law requires that you have photographic
identification with you at all times although a photocopy of your passport is often seen as sufficient.
12) Do not be fooled by fake policemen or "undercover" police
13) Emulate the dress code of the Catalans. You will be seen as a savvy tourist and also much less likely to
stand out from the crowd. You will also have an excellent excuse to buy some new clothing!
14) Avoid walking in dark isolated back streets, especially if you are alone.
15) When on the beach do not leave your belongings unattended. If you're going to do some sunbathing
etc ensure to leave any valuables locked up in the hotel safe.

A favourite of the famous Spanish chef – Ferran Adria. The tiny bar
specialises in tinned seafoods of the highest standards.
Different Names for Tapas Dishes In Barcelona:
Tapas: This is the general name for small dishes of food that are served to be shared. They can vary widely
and cover anything from a bowl of almonds or olives to a plate of grilled
prawns.
Raciones: On menus you will often see the dishes marked with two
separate prices – one for tapas and one for raciones. This will simply be
the same dish, but a bigger portion of it – ideal for when you’re really
hungry!
Pinchos. This is a concept that originates from the Basque region of
Spain. Pinchos are like mouth sized tapas – always served on top of
pieces of bread. They are also sometimes called ‘Montaditos’ (this is
what they are called in Quimet y Quimet).
Platos Combinados: This is the name often given to what we might call
‘meat and two veg’ – an entire meal on a plate. However, it sometimes
also relates to tapas. In Quimet y Quimet a Plato Combinado is a larger
plate containing a variety of the tapas that are on offer.
