A Hale and Hearty WELCOME to the
first Bootsie Blog of The 2016-17 Time To
Shine Season!
It is always my pleasure, and I look
forward to sharing timely thoughts regularly
with you, the precious members of our
TTS Family. Lately a word has been on
my heart that means so very much to ALL
of us traveling this journey o' life together.
That word is TRUST. This simple, yet ever
so important word represents a substantial
part of who and what we are in this day and
age...who can you truly trust? Our goal is
to instill your trust in us. To that end, I
would like to let you in on a few little-known
operational secrets of your Performing Arts
Center.
First and foremost, every single teacher
and member of our staff at Time to Shine
wants every single parent to know how
much we appreciate the TRUST you put
in us each time you bring your child to
class and leave them in our professional
care. At the beginning of The Season, it
is so encouraging to see cautious parents
skeptical of leaving their youngsters with
us at first, turn into trusting partners as
together we witness and strengthen ongoing
development of the beloved Children of
Time To Shine. We are fully cognizant of
the changing times of our world, and take
every precaution available to us to ensure
Safety at The Center. The live video feed
that you see moving from class to class for
your viewing pleasure is actually recording
all rooms being monitored twenty four
hours per day, seven days per week, whether
the power is on or off. We do perform a
Background Check on all of our faculty,

and maintain up-to-date references and
addresses. Additionally, we have an active
alarm system with instant access to the
Police if ever needed, and sometimes they
have shown up when the alarm has been set
off accidentally so we KNOW it does indeed
work and we are indeed connected to the
authorities!
We are positively tenacious when it comes
to insisting that children wait INSIDE until
their designated driver comes to pick them
up, and then letting us know that they are
leaving. We would like to stress that if
you do drop off (which is fine and dandy),
students must be picked up when their last
lesson of the day at The Center is complete
in a TIMELY FASHION as spelled out in
the Student Handbook. When parents are
actively engaged in Center activities, they
are our best ally! Keep up with us at www.

us on Facebook for the latest pertinent
information. We are always available
between 3:00-6:00 should you require help
of any kind.
Leaving your child in a new place, or
ANY place during these crazy times
in which we live may not be easy, but
hopefully you will see how seriously we
take responsibility for the TRUST you have
placed in us. We will continue to work
diligently to earn that trust, while keeping
the JOY of learning The Arts ALIVE and
WELL at Time To Shine The Center for
Performing Arts.

Born: October 11, 1918
Died: July 29, 1998
Jerome Robbins
was one of the 20th
century's most popular
ballet and Broadway
musical choreographers,
known for gems like
West Side Story and
Fiddler on the Roof.
Background and Early
Career
Jerome Wilson
Rabinowitz was born
on October 11, 1918
in New York, New
York. Decades later his
family legally changed their last name to
Robbins. The young Jerome initially studied
with his sister’s modern dance instructors
and was planning to major in chemistry
at New York University. After leaving
school due to economic hardship with his
father’s business during the Depression,
Robbins chose to make a career in dance,
eventually going on to work in musical
productions and dance for Ballet Theatre
(later known as American Ballet Theatre).
Renowned Choreography
The choreographer worked with upand-coming composer Leonard Bernstein
to create "Fancy Free," Robbin’s first dance
for a ballet company. The piece made its
debut on April 22, 1944 to an ecstatic
reception. "Fancy Free" would be turned
into the stage musical "On the Town" by
the end of that year.
Robbins went on to serve as
choreographer and/or director on a
number of Broadway productions that
would become part of the American stage
canon. Some of his projects included Billion
Dollar Baby (1945), High Button Shoes
(1947), for which Robbins won his first Tony,
Miss Liberty (1949), The King and I (1951),
and Peter Pan (1954).
West Side Story
Fall 1957 saw the Broadway debut
of West Side Story, with Robbins
creating, directing
and choreographing
a modern New York
update of Shakespeare’s
Romeo and Juliet. The
production was turned
into a 1961 movie musical
with Robbins serving as
co-director. West Side
Story became a revered
cinematic experience
and went on to win
10 Academy Awards
in the spring of 1962.
Robbins and Wise were
both awarded statuettes for their directing
work (with two directors winning jointly a
historical first), while Robbins was also given
an honorary Oscar for his achievement in
film choreography.
Fiddler on the Roof and Later Projects
After Robbins served as production
supervisor on Barbra Streisand’s Funny Girl,
September 1964 saw the debut of Fiddler
on the Roof, an esteemed musical and one
that connected to Robbins’ Jewish heritage.
He won both choreography and directing
Tonys for the show, which became a 1971
film. Robbins later received his fifth and final
Tony for directing 1989’s Jerome Robbins’
Broadway, an anthology of his work from
various productions.
After the mid-1960s, Robbins chose
to focus on creating ballets, and in fact
chose the world of classical dance over
more popular productions. After George
Balanchine’s death in 1983, Robbins
succeeded his fellow choreographer and
served as co-artistic director of New
York City Ballet along with Peter Martins.
Robbins held the position until 1990.
Jerome Robbins died on July 29, 1998
at the age of 79 after suffering a stroke,
leaving behind a monumental legacy that
continues to be performed and honored.

Elizabeth has acted as a wonderful assistant
with the Ballet I class and is always very well
dressed and there to set a good example
for the younger dancers. She is open minded
and willing to learn new ways to make ballet
technique work best for her and her body.
She has a strong sense of discipline
and a great respect for the art of
dance, but knows when to keep
things light hearted and fun, so
that her love for dance
really shines through.

orchestra. She is leading
the first violins and learning
how to play some syncopated
rhythms. She enjoys a challenge
and applies herself to learning new
violin skills. She has been setting a
very good example in orchestra.

Austin is in the Tuesday Art class.
He is the oldest of three siblings
that are new to Monet's Loft. All
three siblings are a joy to have, and
Austin made sure to set a great
example with his positive attitude.
Austin shows a love of Art and has
a wonderful creative mind. He is
always excited to start a lesson and
supportive of the other students.

Kylie Thompson almost has both her
right and left cartwheels. Way to go,
Kylie!
Jordyn Dickens is a joy to have in Miss
Kathy's Jewels class. She always is ready
to dance.
Risa Solis is really nailing her illusion in
Advanced Lyrical!
A big welcome to Maddie Meggs in
the Wednesday Art class. She loves art,
and it shows in her work. Maddie fits
right in with my returning students..
Chloe Tamuty's grand battements look
great in Miss Carley's Thursday Jewels
class.
Center Company Dancers are showing
great improvement in remembering their
dances now that we’ve employed the
usage of dance notebooks!! WOWZA.
Accomplishing so much more!!
Dillon Mackey came to Mr. Ryan's
guitar lessons with some previous guitar
knowledge, and we have only amplified
his skillset. Recently we have been
working with improvising over a chord
progression using pentatonic scales and it
is apparent to me that he has a natural
ear for the music.
In Jazz 1, Olivia Charles does a
wonderful job listening and being
prepared for traveling combos.
Morgan Mc Henry loves a new tap
challenge and always ready for freeze
dance.
Laura Bone has a great attitude while
dancing in Tap 2.
Gracie Kimmons is really determined
to get her fouettés in Turns class. Keep up
the hard work!
Lauren Bolton really excels in tap!
Andrea Atkinson has been doing
wonderful, having just completed her first
guitar duet "Au Claire de la Lune."
Christian Pabst always does a superb
job in Miss Lisa's ear-training game!
The entire Ballet 2/2A Tech Class
has improved greatly at remembering
combinations at the barre in the past two
weeks.
Jordyn Dickens remembered how many
noises a shuffle-hop-step made in Miss
Carley's Jewels class! Great job!
Makenna Aperauch is showing
great improvement in her pirouettes in
Company!
Ashley Ruth Carrier is doing an
exceptional job with her arms, body
placement and timing in the maneges in
the Company Jazz dance: Under
the Big Top.
In only a few short weeks, Ady Hall
has learned how to play "Twinkle, Twinkle"
from beginning to end on the guitar. This is
an important building block in her musical
education as it is the first full melody she
has been given.
Sydney White executed an awesome
QUAD pirouette in Jazz 4!
Miss Lisa is so proud of Jonah
Orehosky for focusing well and working
hard to coordinate hands together!
Thank you to Natalie Firestone for just
being in the Tuesday Art Class. She is a
delight to have and works hard. I think
she is doing great things in Art.

Natalie Dezarn whipped off a triple
pirouette in Ballet 3!
Miss Kathy simply adores Chloe
Burgos's sparkly personality. She has really
caught on to new tap steps.
Audrey & Andrea Atkinson passed off
on all their songs in Mr. Daniel's piano
class. Great job!
All the violin orchestra students
have successfully played three part
arrangements. They really are starting to
"Boogie, Woogie."
The acting class discovered their
emotional availability by opening up to
their classroom.
In Beginning Lyrical, Evelyn Spain is
doing a super job of picking up a new
style very quickly! Proud of this dancer!
Annie Taylor has met every goal I've
given her to near perfection. We have
been focusing on music theory lately and
she is learning very quickly. Keep up the
great work, Annie! —Miss Katie
Ashton Banuelos is doing great in tap
class and really picks up new combinations
quickly.
Caden Crow has made phenomenal
progress and has already learned
several challenging pieces in
Miss Lisa's piano class!
Miss Liz can always count on Margaret
Schultz to be ready and waiting at the
barre when class starts for Ballet 2/2A
Tech.
Logan Bowers and Austin Firestone
are wonderful guitar students that always
come with questions and curiosity, a trait
every instructor longs for their students to
have.
In Miss Carley's Jewels class, Addy
Johnson was such a GREAT friend to
Peyton in class! Thank you, Addy!
Piper Berkley is a joy to have in the
Sparkles ballet/acro class. She loves to
lead and do new tricks in tumbling.
In Jazz 4, Risa Solis has AMAZING
balance in her pirouette prep!
Bryanna Benefield has a great
attitude in tap class.
Miss Tanya is so pleased with the
work that Zach Firestone is completing
in Tuesday Art class. There is so much
potential in Zach, and I look forward
to seeing what he creates each week.

Heino and Carley Lambert on getting
their Pre-Pro solos set and done! They
are going to be lovely on stage!
Margaret Schultz always has a great
attitude and enthusiasm in class.
Emma Rappa's third position of the
feet in Ballet I has turned out and looks
more natural!
In guitar, Josiah Lewallen has been
improving greatly on reading tablature
notation. Last week I had him go back
and read through music he hasn't played
in a few weeks and he played them
perfectly.
Ella Snakenburg has improved so much
in tap. Love her confidence.
Emileigh Grice and Ashley
Ruth Carrier did an amazing job
choreographing "Yorktown" from
Hamilton for the acting class!
Raelynn Hall is a joy to have in class
and really loves to tumble.
Avica Spencer is using her manners
and being a great listener in Miss
Carley's Thursday Jewels class.
Alison Winslow's bunny jumps look
fantastic in Thursday's Sparkles class!
In Crystals, Francie Thompson always
listens carefully to directions, quietly
pays attention and is ready to dance.
A wonderful role model for the rest of
her class.
Rhys Hoyt hit a high F in her voice
lessons!
Kinley Fowler is a free spirited little
dancer. She loves to twirl about and
play freeze dance.
Daniel Bone has recently started
playing with his church's worship band,
reading multiple chord sheets each
Sunday and playing new music each
week!
Maddy Leddy's ability to remember
the combinations and learn choreography
in Ballet 2A is impressive!
Miss Kathy loves Cambree Smedley's
energy in ballet and tap. Her enthusiam
really shines while she dances.
Sydney White is becoming a master of
improv and emoting in Advanced Lyrical!
Jessica Mann is constantly challenging
herself with her pointe work and
flexibility in Ballet 4!
Peyton Weekley put her tap shoes
in her bag all by herself! Great Job,
Peyton!!
Caden Etheredge is making great
progress learning how to read music in
Mr. Daniel's piano class. Keep it up!
Mason Brabham is always ready to
do circle time in ballet.

the blues! The past few weeks we have
conquered the 12-bar blues form which is
a staple concept for every guitarist.
Madison Harris is tearing up the floor

Alyssa Brown has been flying through
her primer piano book. Miss Katie is very
eager to introduce more challenging

In Tap 3A, Taylor Heim is fun to
challenge with new wings or even time
steps. Her happy expressions of mastering
them are so fun!
Lindsey Richard is new to the Jewels
class but she is already catching on to
new ballet and tap steps. Quick learner.
Katie Hilliard is rocking her extensions
and lines in Ballet 4!

acrobatics and already getting stronger.
