Growth in the production of printed materials and fair supplies continues for Fair Publishing.
SINCE 1880, Fair Publishing House has been a part of American
history. The following is a timeline tracking our company’s growth
and evolution as the leading manufacturer of ribbons, rosettes and
fair supplies.
Jay F. Laning, 1880 Founding Owner, The Fair Publishing House
1870 - 1900 Growth of big business in the United States: Carnegie-Steel,
Rockefeller-Oil, Vanderbilt-Railroads, JP Morgan-Banking, WoolworthRetail Chain Stores, Sears and Roebuck-Mail Order, and The Fair
Publishing House!
1880 - 1888 Jay F. Laning creates a unique system for recording entry
and award data for agricultural fairs. His years of experience as a volunteer
inspire him to print the ledgers needed, promoting them to fairs throughout
the Midwest as The Fair Publishing House.
In 1884 Mr. Laning expands The Fair Publishing House product line by
creating the Simplex Accounting System and adding Fair Premium Lists to
the printed services offered.
Fair Publishing House purchases new building, 1891
1889 Fire destroys the original Fair Publishing House building. In 1891
the company moves to a large, well-built brick structure, formerly known
as the Dauntless and Domestic Sewing Machine Works, and continues to
expand its product lines to include lithographed posters and ribbon awards.
Fair Publishing House begins publishing books, early 1900’s.
Early 1900’s Theodore Roosevelt’s administration ushers in the age of the
“square deal”. Business and economical growth is strong and progressive.
The continuing success of Fair Publishing House causes Mr. Laning to
expand his printing services. The Laning Company – American Publishers
provides a wide range of commercial printing, including book publishing.
Further expansion leads to the founding of The Law Abstract Company and The
Central States Railroad Guide Publishing Company. All of the new companies
are housed in the Fair Publishing House facility.
In 1910 Mr. Laning is elected to the State Senate and turns the day-to-day
operations of business over to his executives.
World War 1 impacts the entire Nation.
1917 - 1919 The United States enters WWI in 1917. With the end of the
War in 1919, the U.S. economy continues to struggle. With the 1920’s
introduction of the Henry Ford Model-T assembly line, the population at
large can now afford a car.
Immediately after the War, the Laning Companies are forced into
receivership, but continue to operate under Court Stewards.

1920’s Flappers, Prohibition, Harlem Renaissance, the Charleston, Jazz,
Blues, Movies, Radio, the good life and, The Fair Publishing House.
James E. Doyle, a printer from Cleveland, Ohio and his eldest son,
James E. Doyle, Jr. purchase the Laning Companies and continue to
operate The Fair Publishing House and the Central States Guide Publishing
Company, while establishing a business forms printing company, the Rotary
Printing Company.
In 1929 the “Great Depression” hits the United States, but The Fair
Publishing House and The Rotary Printing Company continue to operate,
offering full employment to many.
Guarantee
1933 - 1941 Franklin Roosevelt and the “New Deal” provide social
programs to help with unemployment. The U.S. begins to slowly recover
from the depression. In 1941 the U.S. will enter World War II after the
bombing of Pearl Harbor.
The Fair Publishing House purchases the B.F. Harrison Showprint
Company and becomes The Fair Publishing House Incorporated.
Fairs in the United States suspend operations during WWII.
1942 - 1946 During the wartime years, American fairs temporarily suspended
operations. The Fair Publishing House continues business operations by
doing wartime printing for the war effort.
New location for The Fair Publishing House, 1950.
1949 Fire destroys The Fair Publishing, B.F. Harrison building, but some
of the specialized equipment is salvaged. Operations are moved to a new
location at 15 Schauss Avenue, Norwalk, Ohio, in 1950.
Kevin Doyle joins Fair Publishing House.
1957 - 1968 Sputnik causes the United States to launch their own space
program. Domestic and International concerns are escalating and in 1961 a
young, energetic Irish Catholic President, John F. Kennedy is elected to office.
Fair Publishing joins the International Association of Fairs and Expositions,
and the Schauss Avenue facility is expanded to 25,000 square feet to
accommodate the expanding business. In 1957 Kevin Doyle joins his father,
James Doyle, Jr. at The Fair Publishing House. His employment is interrupted
by 3 years of service in the Air Force. In 1960 he rejoined the company.
Award Division purchased in 1969.
1969 & Beyond The Award Division of The Los Angeles Stamp and
Stationery Company is acquired by Fair Publishing. Membership continues
in the Western Fairs Association. Kevin Doyle acquires sole ownership of
Fair Publishing House.
The Doyle Family. Five generations of family involvement.
1920 - 2009 Kevin Doyle is proud of the continuous and sustained growth
that Fair Publishing has experienced since the 1920’s. In addition to Kevin,
family management and leadership is now provided by son Charlie, who
joined Fair Publishing in 1991 and is currently Vice President. In 2004,
daughter Kerry joined the company as a Sales Specialist. As Kevin points
out, the unity and commitment of the family is what helps make the original
Fair Supply House, the oldest and largest in the world.

insures the accuracy of your order.
Terms:
Orders will be shipped on open account to organizations which have
established credit with the Company. Invoices to such accounts are
due 30 days after date of invoice. Fairs and Shows may make special
arrangements to pay one week after actual fair or show dates. If
credit is not established it will be necessary to pay by credit card. We
accept Visa, Mastercard and Discover. (Please note: prices for lowest
quantities shown are minimum quantity prices.)
Production Time:
Most orders are shipped within 3 to 4 weeks of receipt of order.
Everything possible will be done to schedule rush orders for quickest
possible shipment. Rush orders may incur special charges. Rush
orders may incur special charges with your prior approval.
Shipping Information:
Our usual shipping method is by United Parcel Service. UPS requires
a street address to complete delivery. If this is not possible shipment
may be made by U.S. Postal Service or common carrier.
A finance charge applicable to previous months unpaid balance
will be applied by computing a periodic rate of 1.5% per month
corresponding to an annual percentage of 18%.
Regular shipping methods require 2-5 days (depending on
location). Rush orders may be delivered in 1 to 2 days at additional
charge.

responsible for verbal orders.
All shipments made f.o.b. factory, with prepaid postage or shipping
charges added to invoice.

it is necessary to add a nominal charge for each change in premium,
prize or class. CHANGE OF SEALS OR EMBLEMS ARE THE SAME

Special:
We will gladly reproduce at a nominal charge any special emblem or
logo you may require. Black and white art suitable for photography
should be furnished to us.We will then make the necessary stamping
die and retain it for use in future orders.
