J Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time SISTERS AND BROTHERS IN THE LORD Page 1 Parish of the Holy Spirit Well, it has been quite a week here where the Spirit is Alive and Faith keeps growing; a week of summer weather and beautiful flowers blooming thanks to Garden Angels. As we enter the month of July, the height of summer vacation has begun. After being in a northern parish of our diocese, I can appreciate people supporting the parish they attend Mass in the summer. Do not forget to support financially our parish throughout the year. Many have made supporting the parish easy and convenient by doing online giving which makes a steady donation weekly or monthly. Contact our parish office to learn how to do this or go to our parish website to get started. As we continue this Jubilee Year of Mercy, our parish act of Mercy for July is called “Give drink to the thirsty.” If you participate in or donate to a parish mission trip or Haiti Mission trip that provides clean water where clean water is a premium, put that act of mercy on one of the pink hearts in the narthex and drop it in our Works of Mercy container. If you read Pope Francis’ document: “Laudato Si”, write that note on a pink heart and place it in our Works of Mercy container. As we do at the end of each Month of Mercy, the bulletin details the Acts of Mercy we as a parish have completed. When we show Mercy to others, Mercy shall ours. July is usually a busy month for weddings in parishes. This year the busy month was March and there are many Fall weddings. July we have only two scheduled. As you may have noticed at Masses in June, there are many anniversaries of sacramental marriages that have taken place in June over the years. I am still amazed with our culture of convenience that there are so many faithful married couples who celebrate 50 + years of marriage. God really does work in our lives if we are open to his grace with humility and love for another. Happy Anniversary to all our married couples and continue to pray for those responding to God’s grace in responding to the vocation of marriage. See ya in Church Fr John Quote of the day – “Suffering from truth decay? Brush up on your Bible.” Prayer of Pope Francis for the Jubilee Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with His anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. One benefit of this is that I get a different worship experience, and I have to say that between Fr. John, Joe, and all the volunteer ministers we have a pretty good thing going here at Holy Spirit! One thing that is difficult to do while attending another church is making sure that my financial commitment to Holy Spirit continues to be fulfilled. That is why I have enrolled in the online giving program at the parish. Currently we have 280 families that have chosen this method to support the parish. It is quite simple to activate an independent account through the parish website, but if you are a little apprehensive about all this technology “stuff” we can manage your account from the parish office. Just call the parish office at 453-6369 and in most instances I can set up an account for you over the phone. Enjoy the relaxation that summer brings, but don’t forget who makes this all possible. Here is the thought for the week…”If a hearing impaired child signs naughty words does his mother wash his hands with soap?” Have a blessed week and be generous in everything you do. No matter how many times you come to the community of Seguin, you always receive a warm welcome and people are happy to see you. My 6th trip has almost come to an end, as we are safely awaiting the last fight back home. Leaving Seguin is never easy. There are tears of joy from all that we have accomplished and tears of sadness because we must leave all my friends and Seguin children. This year The Team was exceptionally productive and we left the village much better off than we found it few days ago. From my point of view the community (especially younger generations) is catching on caring about their health and many of them are asking for dental cleanings in the hope of saving their teeth. I was very happy to perform almost 80 cleanings and as many protective sealants. I could not have done it without the support of my hard working fellow team mates. Thank you for the prayers and good wishes that we received from many of you. After intense 8-9 hour days, we needed those prayers to go on. Hoping for a good and healthy 2016 and God’s guidance. ~Anna Babkowski, January 15, 2016 453-1591) We are in need of faith-filled individuals to be catechists and catechist assistants in the coming school year for our Wednesday night program. If you are willing to share your faith with our young people, please contact the Religious Education Office for an interview. Training will be provided and is available online over the summer months. Attention all parents of children entering the First Grade at a public school in the fall. Now is the time to register your child for Religious Education so we can be sure to have enough resources available when classes start in the fall. Do you know someone interested in becoming Catholic or learning more about the faith? Contact the Religious Education Office now so they can begin their journey and will be ready to partake in the Rite of Acceptance in the fall. Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 5 Holy Spirit School Praying, Serving, Learning, and Loving With the Spirit Kudos to our students who exceeded the Diocese of Grand Rapids schools' average in 19 of 24 categories on the national MAPS test. Our students also exceeded the diocesan schools' average in 7 of 8 categories on the national ACRE religion test. We are very proud of the outstanding efforts of our students and teachers! Parish of the Holy Spirit Walking With The Spirit Save the Date: Friday, September 16th This year we are kicking off our Community Festival Weekend under the Big Tent with our 9th annual Walking with The Spirit Walk-a-thon fundraiser! This event encourages students to embrace exercise as healthy and fun, but also provides an opportunity for the students to be involved in raising money to improve their school. Please consider partnering with Holy Spirit as a sponsor in this year’s event. In addition to supporting a valuable cause, your donation results in excellent visibility in our local community. If you would like to take advantage of one of our sponsorship opportunities, please contact Kelly Clancy at [email protected]. Our Holy Spirit Educational Foundation Auction Committee has been well under way with their preparation for Auction 2017! Please save January 28, 2017 for our next auction date. The donation committee is putting together fabulous donations from across our Parish! The donation packages value anywhere from $300 to $5000! If you would like to donate an item, please contact Cathy Kubiak (616-340-2810), Sarah Lake (616-299-6262), Lauren Lenz (616-490-3480), Mandy Tuttle (616-366-6076) or Colleen Roth (616-304-0575). We'd love to have gift certificates for places in Traverse City, Grand Haven, Chicago, Mackinac Island or even Cedar Point. Other gift cards for local restaurants, Meijer, Family Fare or Speedway make great donations too! (We use them in packages or during the "gift card frenzy" portion of the auction). You may donate gift cards directly through the Holy Spirit Scrip program or they may be dropped off at the church office. This year, over 40 families are sending their children to Holy Spirit School or our Religious Education Program— thanks to grants funded by your Holy Spirit Education Foundation. Beautiful but pious sisters Martine (Birgitte Federspiel) and Philippa (Bodil Kjer) grow to spinsterhood under the wrathful eye of their strict pastor father on the forbidding and desolate coast of Jutland, until one day, Philippa’s former suitor sends a Parisian refugee named Babette (Stéphane Audran) to serve as the family cook. Babette’s lavish celebratory banquet tempts the family’s dwindling congregation, who abjure such fleshly pleasures as fine foods and wines.
