Grade 10 Student Reflection
Welcome
Easter
The road to graduation
Editor in Chief: MS. Deborah H B Nyberg
Read our student reflection
Sander has been part of our AIS community for
years. As the time to move on grows closer, we
have taken the opportunity to know more about
him, his thoughts on school life and his experiences with the wider community. See page 2
When we think of the word service, we might automatically
think of providing work for pay. However, service can also be
the act of helping others with no expectation of pay or a returned favour in mind. We can be of service to each other, as
a local, national and global community, simply because it is a
positive and helpful thing to do.
We hope you all had a great Easter vacation! Easter can be seen as a time for thinking and reflecting.
One of our students wanted to share what the Easter holiday means to them. See page 3
When was the last time you provided a service for someone,
with no expectations?
COMING IN APRIL!

Mad About Japan
Our students are exposed to many different
cultures. One of our 6th grade Newsletter
Crew members, Amaris Beate is intrigued
by the Japanese culture and our 5th grade
crew member, Tomoko, comes from Japan.
Together, they will provide some fun info
connected to the Japanese culture. Read all
about it on page 5.
Amaris and Tomoko
We’re mixing our grades!
AIS is going to restructure its grades. As it is now,
there are grades 1 - 10, however, after the summer
vacation, each grade will be mixed with students
from grade 1 - 10. Bente Pedersen, the Principal,
says the children, ages 6 - 16, will be able to learn
from each other. Of course, they will have different
work, but they will be working side by side, in a
team environment! Read more about our new
grade system on page 4.

Road to graduation - sander:grade 10
Sander has just turned 16 years of age. He started AIS in 2nd grade, left to
go to a Norwegian school when he was in 5th grade, but returned to AIS in
the 6th grade. His main reason for returning was that AIS had more to offer
and his English skills were too advanced for the Norwegian school he attendKickboxing Training

rapidly and now has 6-7

● Sander considers himself
more of a boxer than a
kickboker since lots of kicks
seem unnatural to him.
● He uses more boxing in the
ring and has started to train
a lot of boxing lately.
● He would rather compete
in boxing as he thinks this is
his strength.

Life Lessons
Kickboxing teachers him
self-discipline. He only uses
it as a defense - not for
fighting. It is only used to
neutralize a situation.

There is a national team meet up in
April, in Bergen.
Role Model
Sander’s role model is Sylvester Stallone, in his
movie role as Rocky, the boxer. Sander says,
“The films are inspirational as they teach you
that you can achieve what you want, no matter
what.” Rocky is considered one of the greatest
sport films ever made. The film has 6 sequels.

April fool!
AIS is NOT going to restructure its grades with students from grades 1 - 10 in
each grade !
Don’t know April Fool means? Read below!
April Fools' Day is celebrated every year on 1st April by playing practical jokes and spreading hoaxes. The
jokes and people who believe them are called April fools. People playing April Fool jokes shout “April
Fool” after they have completed their prank. Some newspapers, magazines, and other published media report fake stories, which are usually explained the next day or below the news section in small letters.
Although popular since the 19th century, the day is not a public holiday in any country.

Mad About JAPAN
Tomoko, grade 5
What do you miss about the Japanese culture? I miss the New Years celebration. We eat a special meal called "Osechi" and the parents , grandparents, aunts and uncles give the children pocket money, which is called
"otoshidama".
Are you an anime fan? If so, how long have you been an anime fan? I’m
not really a huge anime fan, but have liked it since I was in 2nd grade
What is your favourite anime movie? My favourite anime movie is "Summer Wars"
What is your favourite Japanese TV series or book? My favorite TV series is a anime called "Doraemon"
(it might be available in English on YouTube).
Who is your favourite Anime character? My favorite anime character is Doraemon.
Where have you lived in Japan. Are there other cities you would like to live in? I lived in a city called
Kobe. I want to live in a place called Okinawa because Okinawa is really warm.
What does your name mean in Japanese? My name Tomoko means knowledgeable.
Amaris Beate, grade 6
What do you like most about the Japanese culture? The anime, the language mostly everything!
How long have you been an anime fan? Since I was a toddler. I’ve grown up with
Studio Ghibli movies.
What is your favourite anime movie? Summer wars
What is your favourite Japanese TV series or book? The Hyouka TV series and the
Fushigi Yuugi book series.
Who are your favourite anime characters? Kazuma and Kirito.
What city would you like to visit first and why? Tokyo, because it’s the biggest city and its looks so interesting. There is a mini city there called Akihabara that is FULL of anime!
What is your favourite Japanese name and why? Kiriyoshida because it has a nice sound to it. It kind of
sounds like a name for bravery.
What is your favourite Japanese food? Sushi and Pocky!
Nowadays, Akihabara is considered by many to be an otaku cultural center and a shopping district for video games, anime, manga, and computer goods. Icons from popular anime and manga are displayed prominently on the shops in the
area, and numerous maid cafés are found throughout the district.

Film Review
Created in 2015 by John
Wells(Director)

Steven Knight
In the role of Adam Jones we
have Bradley Cooper.
Recommended age limit: 10

Kristoffer Hedman
Grade 9
Adam Jones is a chef who destroyed his career with drugs and diva behavior. He
cleans up and returns to London, determined to redeem himself by spearheading
a top restaurant that can gain three Michelin stars. Burnt is an emotional roller
coaster with Bradley Cooper in the lead role. It is however a movie unsuitable for the
younger ages under 10. When watching this movie what revealed itself to me was
that they managed to portray Adam Jones’ role in such a way that even the audience members that had nothing in common with the role could relate to him and
the story. The movie is full of love, despair and treachery - perfect for a friend gathering or for public events. It got 3 stars but I would give it 5 stars.
