W
elcome to the latest edition of the
Laureus Magazine, your window into the
world of Laureus.
As you turn the pages, you will see how the work of Laureus
now reaches 34 countries and embraces more than one-anda-half million young people. In the stories that follow, you
will meet some of those who have benefited.
In a significant development this year, the 15th edition of
the Laureus World Sports Awards comes to a new venue in
the exciting and forward-looking city of Kuala Lumpur in
Malaysia - the first time the Awards Ceremony has reached
out to South East Asia.
The Awards Ceremony, attended by the greatest living sports
legends, is the premier honours event in the international
sporting calendar and generates funds which directly benefit
the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
In 2013, of course, we lost our Patron, the great Nelson
Mandela. He will be missed as our inspiration, but we
continue our work with even greater resolve to perpetuate
his memory and do our best to use sport to change the
world as he wanted us to.
The Foundation never sleeps. In November, Laureus World
Sports Academy Member Ian Botham completed a weeklong trek across Sri Lanka, from north to south, to raise
funds, and a month later the US Coach Across America
programme, supported by Laureus, opened up in Seattle, its
15th city. To date, the whole programme has impacted on
almost 100,000 young people. Just two highlights of a busy
year for the Foundation.

WE BELIEVE IN
SPORT FOR GOOD
Some thirty years ago, whilst living in New York City, I had
a black friend who was a true sports superstar. He was
constantly mobbed for autographs. I noticed that he took
extra care giving signed posters to white kids. I asked him
about the apparent favouritism. His answer: “Johann, if
a white kid has my poster in his bedroom, he can hardly
discriminate against the black kid in his class”. How true.
Whether it’s in the Olympics, Soccer World Cup or Super
Bowl – on the playing field everyone is equal. The German
national soccer team is a prime example. On our 2010
World Cup squad we had players with roots in nine different
countries: Poland, Ghana, Nigeria, Tunisia, Spain, Brazil,
Bosnia-Herzegovina, Turkey and, of course, Germany.
The entire country cheered its “international team” on –
regardless of the players’ skin colour, religion or origin.
Ever since then we have strived to create and promote crosscultural heroes. In South Africa we helped start Institutes
and Sports Academies to promote sporting excellence.
As a South African I have also witnessed first hand the
profound role that sport can play in nation-building and
reconciliation. When democratic South Africa was accepted
into international sport over a decade ago many believed
it would take years for us to be integrated. Since then we
have confounded the critics, won major championships and
hosted others. It is this same belief that led me to propose
that Richemont help found Laureus and the Laureus Sport
for Good Foundation.
That shows a common goal unites. I’ve experienced the
same at Daimler. When it comes down to it, building cars
is also a team sport. Our Mercedes star team is made up
of colleagues from more than 140 countries. Team spirit,
mutual respect and fair play are equally key to our success.
Sport promotes these qualities: That is why the “Laureus
Sport for Good Foundation” and Daimler are a perfect
match. Laureus has brought the integrative power of sports
to bear for 15 years. As co-founders we’re proud to work
together with 150- plus prominent Laureus Ambassadors
and have supported millions of children and youths with
difficult backgrounds. Laureus projects help these young
people discover their talents, develop attributes such as
discipline and determination, and find their place in life.
That opens up new opportunities for them in sports and far
beyond.
Laureus Sport for Good Foundation believes that sport can
change the way people look at the world. The true values of
sport can bring together families, friends, nations – and on
occasions, the whole world – in a way that no other human
activity can.
Laureus’ passion is based on a simple truth: whoever you
are, wherever you live, whatever your background; sport can
give you the chance to be a better person tomorrow than you
are today. In a world of increasing tension between cultures
and religions, we believe that sporting heroes can bridge
the gap that other leaders of society are either unable or
unwilling to do.
That’s why we look forward to continuing our support!

he Laureus World Sports Awards is celebrating its
15th year with an exciting move east. The venue
for the 2014 Awards Ceremony is the dynamic city of Kuala
Lumpur in Malaysia – the first time the Awards have been
staged in South East Asia.
The globally televised Awards Ceremony, attended by living
legends of sport, honours the achievements of the greatest
sportsmen and sportswomen each year and, equally
importantly, raises funds which benefit and underpin the
work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
Malaysia is a diverse mix of vibrant cities, tropical islands,
remote villages and rain forest landscapes, and Kuala
Lumpur, with the bustle of Chinatown’s markets, elegant
historic buildings of Merdeka Square and the Petronas
Towers, which dominate the skyline, is a fitting location for
the high profile event.

Guests attending the Awards Ceremony have included His

dwin Moses admitted afterwards that it was one of
the most unusual photo sessions he had ever been
involved in. Sitting in the bleachers, surrounded by
some of the brightest young footballers in Malaysia, is not
something he normally does, especially in 30-degree heat.
Then, to end a very unusual day, he was invited to join a
group of drummers for an impromptu recital. “Amazing!”
was how he described it.
Piala Mamee 1Malaysia, a football tournament for Under19s, is organised by Malaysian charity Yayasan Rakyat
1Malaysia (YR1M), and was the perfect place to launch an
innovative tie-up between Laureus and it’s CSR Partner YR1M.

Edwin said: “We are not just here for the Awards. We want to
work with YR1M to develop social programmes in Malaysia
which will use sport to help young people.”
YR1M is a charitable foundation dedicated towards
benefiting Malaysians from all walks of life. Ung Su Ling,
Chief Executive Officer of YR1M, said: “We look forward
to working with Laureus to bring its extensive know-how
and network in this area to Malaysian sports bodies and
grassroots organisations to enable them to implement
more sports programmes to address social issues among
Malaysian youths.”
A few days later, three more Laureus Ambassadors, French
World Cup winner Marcel Desailly, top football coach André
Villas-Boas and five-time world motor cycling champion Mick
Doohan, visited the tournament.

The inaugural Laureus World Sports Awards took place in
Monaco that year when the winners included Pelé, Serena
Williams and Tiger Woods. But the star of the show was
the surprise guest of honour, Nelson Mandela, who was to
become Patron of Laureus.
Double Olympic 400 metres hurdles champion Edwin
Moses, who has been Chairman of Laureus since day one,
said: “When Nelson Mandela came to Monaco, I think you
can say that our prime interest was the Awards, but that’s
not the case anymore. Now the Awards and the work of
the Foundation go hand in hand. The Awards is a showcase
for the Foundation and generates funds which financially
underpin it.”
He uttered the words that have become the driving force
for the Laureus Movement. He said: “Sport has the power
to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the
power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks
to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create
hope, where once there was only despair.”
The first community project to be supported by Laureus was
the Mathare Youth Sports Association, based in one of the
largest and poorest slums in Nairobi. Disease is widespread
and AIDS is a serious problem. The project uses football as
a tool to encourage co-operation and raise self-esteem in the
young people of the community.
Thus was born the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, its
work in those early years focusing on helping young people
overcome challenging social issues including poverty,
juvenile violence, drug abuse, discrimination and HIV/AIDS.
Fifteen years later, Laureus still supports Mathare but also
supports more than 150 projects in 34 countries, and
Laureus Academy Members travel thousands of miles each
year to offer their support.

To make the visit even more unforgettable, Michael
Johnson, the greatest 400 metres runner of all time, and
double Olympic gold medal winner Moses took part in an
impromptu race with pupils.
In Shanghai in 2003 came one of the truly memorable
visits. Cymbals crashed and balloons flapped in the wind as
a hundred children shouted out their welcome Chinese-style
as Edwin Moses led Sebastian Coe, Nadia Comaneci, Yaping
Deng, Kapil Dev, Michael Johnson, Franz Klammer, Robby
Naish and Daley Thompson on a visit to a school established
by Special Olympics – the world’s largest sports organisation
for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

By 2005 Academy Members were taking an increasingly
proactive role in visiting problem areas to see for themselves
how Laureus could help.
When Swiss tennis star Roger Federer received the first of
his four Sportsman of the Year Awards, he told the audience
in Estoril – “I’ve received many awards over the years, but
this one is the one I really wish for”.

Edwin Moses and Hollywood action hero Jackie Chan, a
Laureus Ambassador, visited Northern Cambodia, one of the
most dangerous places on Earth after almost three decades
of war. As a result of the visit, a landmine awareness project
was launched.
While this was happening, Academy Member Nawal El
Moutawakel, now a Vice-President of the International
Olympic Committee and one of the most influential women
in sport, founded an innovative fun run for women and girls
in Casablanca, Courir Pour La Vie (Run For Life), which
attracts more than 25,000 participants each year.
Also Ian Botham visited Sri Lanka in the aftermath of
the Tsunami Disaster to assess what assistance Laureus
could give, and identified a suitable project in the village of
Seenigama, near Galle, which focused on sport as the way to
rebuild community spirit.

Nawal has championed women’s rights in Morocco, and in
2007 fellow Academy Members Marvelous Marvin Hagler
and Daley Thompson were at the event to support her. She
said: “Courir Pour La Vie helps youth to find the best path in
their life, away from drugs, poverty, exclusion and violence.
I want to thank all my Laureus friends who came to Morocco
to support me in this.”
Yelena Isinbayeva, whose pioneering efforts have made
women’s pole vaulting a blue riband event, was celebrating
winning the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award.
Isinbayeva’s reaction explains what Laureus Awards mean
to those who receive them. It was her third nomination and
she said: “I’ve been so disappointed for the last two years
because I was sure I would win, but this time I’ve done it.
Winning it was always a dream of mine and now this dream
has come true.”
While one great sportswoman was helping the next
generation in her home country, in the same year another,

Over 400 children currently benefit. Marcel said: “I have
been overwhelmed by what I have seen. This is a classic
example of how sport can make a big difference to the lives
of so many young people.”
As Laureus grew, national foundations were established in
Argentina, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, South Africa,
Spain, Switzerland and the United States, and Academy
Members knew no limits in their determination to succeed.
In 2008 France's World Cup winner Marcel Desailly returned
to Ghana, the country of his birth, to visit the Laureussupported Sport and Skills project, run by OrphanAid Africa,
to help orphans, deprived children and young people in the
juvenile justice system.

After receiving the 2009 Award, Bolt performed his
trademark lightning bolt celebration and said: “It’s an
honour to succeed such greats as multiple winner Roger
Federer, Michael Schumacher and Tiger Woods.”
Another highlight came a year later, following the Beijing
Olympics where Usain Bolt became the first man in history
to win the 100 metres, 200 metres and 4x100 metres relay
gold medals in world record times in the same Olympiad.
Bolt received the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year
Award from Academy Member Michael Johnson, whose 200
metres record, ironically, Bolt had broken.

Two years later it was Rafael Nadal’s turn. He celebrated
his Laureus Award in a very different way, playing a game
of table tennis on stage at the Awards Ceremony with
Hollywood star Kevin Spacey.
Nadal described his Sportsman of the Year accolade as
the “the most important Award in sport” – but he remained
diplomatically silent about Spacey’s ability at Table Tennis.

The man of the year at the 2013 Laureus World Sports
Awards was undoubtedly Michael Phelps, winner of a
record 22 Olympic medals, 18 of them gold. His visit to
Rio de Janeiro for the Awards Ceremony showed again how
interconnected the Awards and the Foundation are, as he
took time out on the eve of the Awards to visit the deprived
Rocinha neighbourhood, where he swam with the favela kids
in their own community pool.
Later he was presented with a new Award – the Laureus
Academy Exceptional Achievement Award – and said: “I woke
up with a dream as a kid to be the best that I could be. It
has been an amazing career and it is crazy to think that it is
over. But I will continue to be a part of sport and help grow
sport. That is a goal of mine and a passion of mine.”
And that is a goal which Laureus too shares and will
nurture as we move towards the next 15 years.

rand Central Terminal is one of the great
landmarks of New York City. Each day
more than 750,000 people pass through its
impressive concourse.
In January, however, the buzz of the commuters was
complemented by the distinctive sound of squash balls
thudding against the walls of a squash court as the J.P.
Morgan Tournament of Champions came to the heart of
Manhattan.
During the event it was announced that Nicol David and Nick
Matthew, the No.1 squash players in the world, were to be
Ambassadors for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
At the same time, Laureus and the Professional Squash
Association (PSA) announced a unique partnership which
will see Laureus becoming the PSA’s official charity partner.

Malaysia’s Nicol David, who went on to win the tournament,
is the dominant player in women’s squash and the first
Asian woman to reach No.1 in the world rankings, a position
she has held since 2006.
She said: “Laureus is dedicated to improving the lives of
people in disadvantaged areas, which is something I support
strongly, and I am looking forward to joining them in their
mission to promote healthy living through squash and
sharing my passion for sport with others.”
Laureus and the PSA will now work together and collaborate
with squash charities on a range of initiatives to help young
people and foster the growth of the sport.

TAKES
THE LEAD
IN THE SPORT FOR
DEVELOPMENT MOVEMENT
W
hile continuing its role as a funder,
Laureus is also acquiring a significant
and leading voice in the sport for development movement.
In November, for example, Laureus World Sports Academy
Member and Brazilian Formula One legend Emerson
Fittipaldi made a keynote speech at the UNESCO Conference
on Sport and Human Development in Rio de Janeiro.
He told the delegates that the world needs to use sport
more to resolve social problems, particularly global
conflicts. The two-time world champion urged authorities to
invest in grassroots sports programmes as a core element
of building bridges and removing the causes of tension
between communities and individuals.
Laureus Academy Members, by nature of their celebrity,
are able to open doors and make governments and opinion
makers listen. In the past there have been presentations
made on Capitol Hill in Washington, at the UK House of
Commons in London and with the French Sports Minister.
This ‘advocacy’ approach can work because of the global
nature of Laureus, which now reaches out to over 34
countries.

With this worldwide network comes other benefits,
Project leaders are regularly brought together to share
knowledge and ideas, undergo training and develop joint
initiatives. The most recent was in Bern, Switzerland, in
August when 100 young leaders from Laureus-funded
projects across Europe took part in workshops that
promoted fair play, peace building and health education.
Laureus has also taken the lead in recent years in developing
a background structure which helps its projects to operate
more effectively.
Funding has been used to develop a broad package
of training on how sport can be used to combat crime
prevention and juvenile violence and to assist employability
and conflict resolution. The leaders that are trained are then
able to go out and become role models in their community
whilst advancing the methodology of the organisations
that are trained. Indeed, this training has now helped to
strengthen over 100 organisations in more than 30 countries
across the globe.
Laureus has regularly published research, in co-operation
with universities and other centres of sport science, which
shows that community sports projects, such as those
supported by Laureus, are highly effective when it comes to
tackling youth crime and anti-social behaviour and can save
governments money.
When projects are up and running, a ground-breaking
monitoring and evaluation system developed by Laureus
enables them to see if they are working effectively; if not,
the system helps them to make changes. A total of 28
organisations from 16 countries have now been given the
ability to actively measure the impact of their work, and
many more will receive this support in 2014. The statistics
and impact that this and the research provide give greater
strength to the voice of the Laureus Academy when
advocating the role of sport in contributing to resolving
global social issues.
When Laureus was first established in 2000, there was little
understanding of how the power of sport could be used
to change society and improve young people’s lives. Now,
thanks in part to the efforts of Laureus, there is awareness
among governments and international agencies that sport
has a significant part to play.

rilliant young Formula One racer Nico Rosberg
from the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS team was
named a Laureus Ambassador at the Italian
Grand Prix at Monza in September 2013.
Hugely popular German driver Nico made an immediate
contribution to the work of Laureus by hosting a visit to the
Italian Grand Prix for young leaders from Laureus-supported
projects in Italy who were treated to an unforgettable
Formula One moment, walking the paddock, having lunch
in the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS motorhome and sharing
stories and experiences with Nico ahead of the worldfamous Monza race.
Mercedes-Benz has supported Laureus since its creation in
2000 as a Global Partner and is delighted that the work of
the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation has convinced Nico
to join the Laureus Movement.
Nico, who has won three Grand Prix since he joined
Formula One in 2006, believes passionately that sport can
combat social problems and bring people together. “The
work Laureus does around the world is amazing and I look
forward to be being able to do what I can to help,” he said.
Nico was welcomed to the Laureus Family by German
football legend and Laureus World Sports Academy Member
Franz Beckenbauer. Franz said: “Nico is a brilliant driver with
a wonderful future ahead of him. He is also a man who cares
passionately about young people. The future of sport lies in
the hands of people like Nico who know that not only do you
have to be the best in your chosen sport, but you have to
understand how important it is to help people less fortunate
than yourself.”
And what he started in Monza in September Nico continued
for the rest of the year inviting more children from Laureussupported projects to the Grand Prix in India in October and
Brazil in November.

In India he had a special surprise for the young people
from the Laureus-supported Magic Bus project, personally
welcoming the 20 youngsters in their bus as they headed for
the Buddh International Circuit. He also donated footballs
which were loaded into the bus for the youngsters to take
back to the project.
Since its inception Magic Bus, which originated in Mumbai,
has reached out to 250,000 children. Through activitybased learning on issues such as gender equality, health
and hygiene, the programme aims to build a poverty-free
future for children. The project works with children and their
communities for up to ten years on a journey from childhood
to livelihood. Their work helps to ensure that they create a
new generation of economically independent citizens who
are fully equipped to participate in, contribute to and even
shape tomorrow’s India.
Nico was massively impressed with what he saw. He said:
“The work Laureus does around the world to support
projects like these is wonderful and I was pleased I was
able to meet the guys and talk to them. I certainly found it
moving listening to some of their stories about what life has
been like for them and how they have been given support
and direction by the project and now have much more hope
for their future.”

showed to him the precious IWC timepiece – a Portuguese
Yacht Club Chronograph in characteristic Laureus blue.
Hasanga’s excitement was evident as the young swimming
enthusiast, together with his proud parents, took the watch
into their hands to feel the black rubber strap and touch the
fine engraving on the back of the case.

In early November, IWC Schaffhausen travelled to Sri Lanka
to present to 12-year-old Hakkini Hasanga Sandumal De
Silva the limited edition watch that carries an engraving
of his very own drawing. The judges of the annual global
children’s drawing competition were impressed by
Hasanga’s creative way of capturing the Olympic spirit and
illustrating the theme ‘Time to move’.
“It’s a brilliant idea to use sport as an instrument of social
change. This is a universal language which every human
being understands, regardless of origin or education,”
is how Georges Kern summarizes the Laureus recipe for
success.

So firm is Georges Kern’s faith in the power of sport
that IWC Schaffhausen founded the Laureus Foundation
Switzerland in 2007 and has been a driving force behind its
projects so far.
The ‘Laureus Charity Night’ is the most important
fundraising event of the Foundation and an inseparable part
of the social agenda of Switzerland. Attended by Laureus
World Sports Academy Chairman Edwin Moses, more than
600 guests from sporting, business and political circles
came together in November last year at the exclusive gala
event to support the Laureus Foundation. They experienced a
unique evening in the presence of national and international
sports celebrities and Olympic champions from among the
Academy Members.
“The solidarity with disadvantaged children in Switzerland
is amazing,” says Georges Kern. “With the generous
commitment of the Charity Night guests, an overwhelming
donation amount was collected, which will go in full towards
the Foundation’s projects. IWC is proud to be associated
with the Laureus Foundation Switzerland and is looking
forward to another wonderful year.”

IWC Schaffhausen supported the glittering event by
sponsoring the show act and by auctioning a precious
timepiece. A unique Portuguese Minute Repeater in platinum
by the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer was among
several lots under the hammer. As a total of the proceeds
of the admission fees, the auction and the raffle, Laureus
ambassadors accepted on behalf of the Foundation a
donation cheque for the record amount of CHF 595,000.

A YOUNG GIRL TACKLES THE HURDLES AT
PARQUE SARMENTO, BUENOS AIRES
N
awal El Moutawakel is one of the most influential
people in sport. In addition to being a Laureus
World Sports Academy Member, she is a Vice-President of
the International Olympic Committee, Chair of the Rio de
Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games Co-ordination Commission
and of course the first African and Muslim woman to win an
Olympic gold medal.
For them the vivacious woman taking part in impromptu
hurdles races was just having fun and chatting to them
about their lives and their hopes for the future. They
probably had no idea that almost 30 years ago she was the
talk of sport as she won the Olympic 400 metres hurdles
gold medal in Los Angeles.
Nawal said: “Sport changed my life and it only took 54
seconds (in the 400 metres hurdles final in Los Angeles),
and I’m sure it can change the lives of many young children
around the world, because of its power. I think this is the
beauty of sport and the message that is spread around the
world by Laureus.”
An impressive resumé, but this meant little to 100 children
who enjoyed an athletics session at the Parque Sarmiento,
Buenos Aires, hosted by the Fundación Laureus Argentina in
September.

Joining Nawal were three other athletics giants and Laureus
Academy Members – Sergey Bubka, the greatest ever pole
vaulter, and legendary Olympic track champions Sebastian
Coe and Kip Keino.
All four were in Argentina for the IOC Congress, which chose
Tokyo as the Host City for the 2020 Olympics, but they still
found time to join children from deprived areas for a sports
activity session organised in collaboration with the City of
Buenos Aires by Laureus Academy Member Hugo Porta,
Chairman of Laureus Argentina.

In Madrid in November, autistic children who are benefiting
from a Laureus-supported project in Spain met two football
greats, Luis Figo and Juan Mata, and went for a bike ride
they will never forget.
Laureus Ambassadors Figo and Mata shared a day with the
children and joined them on a tandem bike ride, then played
a fun game of mini-football with them.
Juan Mata said: “I just want to make these kids smile, the
most important thing is to try to make them happy.”
Figo, who played for both FC Barcelona and Real Madrid in
a stellar career, said: “These children are the real heroes.
Children with different abilities for whom each day is a
challenge. Today has been a very special day for me because
I have seen the excitement in their faces.”
The young people who joined Figo and Manchester United
and Spain star Mata came from the Pauta Foundation,
winner of one of the scholarships from the Laureussupported ‘For our Heroes’ programme, created in cooperation with the Alex Foundation. The project provides
financial scholarships for individuals, teams or groups of
people who participate in sport but are in need of support
to further develop their abilities.

Also in November, a group of South African rugby players,
including Laureus Ambassador Bryan Habana and
Springboks captain Jean de Villiers, took time out from
preparing to face Scotland to challenge a team of Edinburgh
youngsters, from the Laureus-supported Street League
project, to a penalty shootout.
The youngsters won 3-2 and Habana, one of the greatest tryscorers in history, said: “It has been great fun meeting the
kids, but maybe next time we will take them on at kicking
penalties between the posts with a rugby ball rather than
soccer goals.”

ormer world and European champion Zinedine
Zidane joined forces with Ronaldo and other
legends of football in a charity match where
children across the world have become the true winners.
The crowd on the night were treated to a game of real thrills
and spills before it ended with the 8-6 final score.
Also playing at the Stade de Suisse was Laureus Ambassador
Luis Figo, Paolo Maldini, Michel Salgado, Pavel Nedvěd and
multiple Brazilian football world champion Marta.
Zidane and his team were playing at Stade de Suisse, home
to BSC Young Boys, in front of 20,000 spectators. Zidane
led his team to an 8-6 victory over the Young Boys and
Friends team. The focus of the match was on helping make
a positive change to the lives of children across the world.
Proceeds from the game went to the reconstruction of the
Philippines and following typhoon Yolanda to the Laureus
Foundation Switzerland.
Among the prominent visitors was UEFA President Michel
Platini. The Laureus Foundation Switzerland, who are charity
partners of BSC Young Boys, were joint beneficiaries of
the match along with the United Nations Development
Programme.

Funds raised from Beefy’s Big Sri Lanka Walk, staged with
the backing of SriLankan Airlines and Sri Lanka Tourism,
will go to help sports-based community projects, including
those operated by the Foundation of Goodness in Sri Lanka,
with the support of Laureus.
ir Ian Botham crossed the finishing line at the
Seenigama Cricket Ground in Sri Lanka, raised his
arms to the skies and celebrated the end of his
greatest ever charity walk.
His epic trek from Kilinochchi in the north to Seenigama in
the south, in tropical heat where temperatures approached
30° centigrade, raised more than €175,000 for the Laureus
Sport for Good Foundation and showed once again the
fighting never-say-die character of one of Britain’s greatest
sportsmen.
He said: “It’s all over and it’s been terrific. The reception
in Seenigama was magnificent, especially having all the
children here. I am delighted we have raised so much for
such a good cause.”
Over the period of the walk, many great cricketers such
as Australian captains Allan Border and Steve Waugh and
Indian and Sri Lankan stars Muttiah Muralitharan, Sourav
Ganguly, Sunil Gavaskar, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar
Sangakkara, plus rugby legend Morné du Plessis, have
joined Ian at various stages to support him.
After the tsunami of 2004, which devastated parts of the
country, killed 35,000 people and displaced over 500,000,
Ian went to Sri Lanka, on behalf of Laureus, to assess the
situation and see what could be done to help. He saw how
the creation of a sports-based project in the village of
Seenigama could play a significant role in the rebuilding of
the community.
Since then Laureus has worked with the Foundation of
Goodness in Sri Lanka by providing funds and expertise to
help build sports facilities and supply coaching for young
people in the rural communities. Seenigama Sports has
helped the region to recover its community spirit and rebuild
lives, especially through the love of cricket.

The Laureus World Sports Academy Member had maintained
an average pace of 20 miles a day for eight days to reach
his goal, and his joy as he crossed the finishing line, cheered
on by children in their school uniforms lining the track and
waving flags, was clear to see.

Now, many years on, following the ending of the country’s
civil war, Laureus, working again with the Foundation of
Goodness, is supporting the creation of a second project,
this time in the town of Mankulam, in the north of the
country, helping children from the two communities to play
sport together and to learn to live in harmony.

IN SEATTLE
I
t was a case of being Sleepless in Seattle for countless
youngsters the night before Felix Sanchez came to town.
The two-time Olympic 400 metres hurdles champion
was in Seattle to announce his support for an innovative
programme, supported by Laureus, that trains coaches to
work in sports-based youth projects in disadvantaged areas
of the city.

For the boys and girls from Seattle Parks Teens Youth
Sports, it was one of the best days of their lives, and many
had stayed awake the night before in anticipation of meeting
such a great sporting champion.
Sanchez won the Olympic gold medal in 2004 in Athens
and again eight years later in London, in exactly the same
time of 47.63 secs. It was a feat which won him the Laureus
World Comeback of the Year Award.

One in five children in South Seattle are classified as
overweight or obese, while 19% of all youth live in poverty.
More than 130 different languages are spoken. Felix Sanchez
understands the problem, which is why he wanted to visit. He
says: “As budgets for school-based programmes decrease, it
is essential to invest in training and support for coaches to
fill these gaps and support the community’s youth.”
In 2012, Laureus USA announced its support of the Up2Us
Coach Across America programme, backed by MercedesBenz USA, which places coaches in sports-based youth
development projects around the country. To date, the
programme has impacted almost 100,000 young people in
15 cities.
