“Don’t be afraid to take a big step if needed. You can’t cross a chasm in two
small jumps.”
Anonymous
Well by now I hope you’ve heard the New Mexico District is joining forces with Region F for a joint Rally in Albuquerque, NM
to be held at the Marriott Uptown from May 27-29, 2016. We are looking forward to seeing you all there to share good times
with all your old friends and with the friends you have yet to meet.
There will be twice as much FUN to be had, because you get 2 Rallies for the price of one. With the Rally being on New
Mexico’s home turf we are planning on showcasing the area with some of the can’t miss things to do when you get some
down time from all the events and activities at the Rally. We are planning rides, some guided some self-guided, cool places
to see, like the Balloon Museum, the Nuclear Museum and maybe a ride on the world famous Tram, as well as a chance to
experience some of the stellar food establishments in the area.
I can’t begin to tell you how excited we are to be able to team up with Region F for what is sure to be an epic good time. We
are all looking forward to everyone coming to Albuquerque so we can showcase our great city and the surrounding area. See
you in May, make your reservations now.
Reflecting on the opening quote brings to mind another quote I’ve often heard and try to live by. “No Risk, No Reward” We
can all skate through life without upsetting the apple cart, but honestly where’s the fun in that. Do you think Sir Isaac Newton
discovered gravity by sitting back and relaxing under a tree, oh wait, that is kind of how it happened. We didn’t just fall onto
the moon, we had to take risks, and imagine the reward of that adventure.
The Risk/Reward situation is alive and well in our District and our Chapters. We’ve got people stepping up and stepping out
in an effort to increase the Fun, Safety and Knowledge for our members. We’re planning a ride to WingDing, a huge Motorist
Awareness event, a ride on the Green Chile Cheeseburger trail, a DQ statewide eat-a-thon, and ways to get more people
involved with the fun.
You may be thinking to yourself, my ideas will never work, or maybe I’ve got great ideas, but how do I implement them. Remember no man is an island, we are all here to work as a Team. Get out and visit other Chapters, States, and Regions, see
how and what they are doing and bring some ideas back to your Chapter and put your spin on them. To loosely quote Ray
Garris ‘Once you get 5 miles from an event, the idea is up for grabs’. This is good advice, take it. If you’re not sure how to get
that idea that’s banging around in your head share it with someone, they may be able to help you succeed. The only people
who never accomplish anything are those that never try anything. So come on JUMP!

PMS
What does that mean to people?? I’m sure some of my lady readers know what it means to them, whether they suffer it now or
previously in their lives ! Men may also have their own understanding of what that means too, having lived through it with a
loved one.
But, I was enlightened as to a whole new meaning on a group text I was included on last weekend!
PMS stands for PARKED MOTORCYCLE SYNDROME, and that is something I am sure a lot of us are suffering everyday of
this Winter. Some of us can’t ride as we have had surgery, others like myself have no rider available as they have other commitments. I have told Gary that I keep going out to the trike and patting it saying “there there”, and that we will be back on the
road soon. Don’t want it to think we have forgotten it. Not riding is very weird !
There is going to be a lot going on in the District with rides and everyone needs to keep a close eye on this newsletter as announcements are made about rides during Region/District Rally (May 27 th-29th, Memorial weekend). There will be a Poker Run
too at Rally with a” local theme”.
There also is to be an organized ride to Billings, Montana for Wing Ding, which is Labor Day weekend. Gary is working on that
ride, all I know is we plan to leave Albuquerque on Saturday August 27 th.
Chapter W has announced its DQ competition in their last month’s newsletter and that entails a lot of riding (or driving if you
prefer). Check it out .
All in all there is a lot going on and the weather is warming up so stop that PMS feeling and get out there!! Be safe

February is here! This means GWRRA members are gearing up for spring, warmer weather and many awe-inspiring adventures. Phil and I, along with six other Chapter C - NM members, just returned from a month stay in Ehrenberg, Arizona. We
left New Mexico after the December blizzard and were able to enjoy somewhat warmer temperatures and the beautiful Colorado River. Trailering our trikes, we traveled to Arizona by RV. Finding the mountains and desert beautiful, we rode our
trikes along the Colorado River. Lake Havasu is breathtaking and the London Bridge is a marvel.
Now that we are home, we plan to channel all of our energies into promoting the District Membership Enhancement Program. We are particularly excited about the 2016 combined New Mexico District and Region F Rally. This is a perfect opportunity for members to support their Couple, Individual and Chapter of the Year candidates, both at the District and Region
level. Let them know how proud you are of their accomplishments, they’ll appreciate it.
Until next month…ride safely and have fun!

Level Up
As most of us are aware and appreciate, GWRRA (Gold Wing Road Riders Association) has a comprehensive and impressive range of training and recognition programs available to members through the Rider Education Program. The intended
purpose is to make the motorcycle environment safer by reducing injuries and fatalities, as well as increasing motorcyclist
skills and awareness.
One such program is the Levels Program and below is a summary of each of the four Levels.
Level I: Safety by Commitment
Also referred to as Safe Miles, this Level is simply one where the Rider/Co-rider are committed to safe motorcycle operation
and express an interest in furthering their rider education.
Although there is no mileage requirement to enter Level I, safe riding miles can be tracked since joining GWRRA. Level I is
recognized by the below patches and accident free miles are accumulated in increments of 5,000 miles. Mileage pins are
available in 5,000 mile increments and may be updated annually. Rocker patches are also available reflecting 100,000,
200,000, etc. Safe Miles.
Level II: Safety by Education
Level II is also referred to as Tour Rider. This Level represents the Rider and Co-Rider’s commitment to be safer and more
knowledgeable riders by taking approved riding courses at regular intervals. Courses that fall under this category include the
Motorcycle Safety Foundation programs, United Sidecar Association course, Canadian Safety Council programs, and
GWRRA’s Advanced Riding courses, including the Trike Riding course.
Completing one of these courses along with 5,000 safe miles qualifies the member for Level II. Within our District, most people seem to take the Advanced or Trike Rider courses which are great fun and build skills and confidence. Please remember
that you will have to retake these courses since they expire after 3 years.
For the Co-Rider, there is an excellent Co-Rider seminar and "Two Up" programs to assist in their role in safe motorcycle
operation.

Level III: Safety by Preparedness
Level III is also referred to as Certified Tour Rider/Co-Rider. It represents the commitment of the Rider/Co-Rider to be prepared in the event of an accident to give aid and possibly save lives. This is done by being knowledgeable in First Aid/CPR
and carrying a first aid kit on their motorcycle at all times.
The member must also take a Motorist Awareness seminar to qualify for Level III and be current in Level II.
Level IV: Safety by Enhanced Commitment and Preparedness
Level IV is the most prestigious of the Levels and is referred to as Master Tour Rider/Co-Rider. The Master Level commitment
is shown by a demonstrated history of safe miles and current certification in both First Aid and CPR. Additional requirements
include being current in Level III for one year and have 25,000 Safe Miles, as well as being committed to riding with “Proper
Riding Gear” at all times.
Additional recognition for the Master Level includes:
Senior Master (5 years from year of Level IV)
Grand Master (10 years from year of Level IV)
Life Grand Master (15 years from year of Level IV)
I hope this summary gives members a better idea of the requirements and benefits of each Level. Also, I encourage members
to view their GWRRA online training record to see if any of their training is approaching expiration or is already expired. For
those already participating in the Levels, I am sure many will see that their particular Level is not active due to expiration of
some course or for other reasons. Your Chapter Educator can help you sort through this and keep you moving forward on
your Levels and overall training goals.

Why should I go to Conventions?
This question has been asked of me more than once so I decided to put my answers to paper.

Camaraderie - getting to meet other GWRRA members from your District, Region, and the nation and if you’re real
lucky some from other countries plus seeing old friends just like a big reunion but with people you like.

Learning opportunities – The number of classes that are available. At most District convention you will have Advanced Rider Course (ARC) Trike Rider Course (TRC), First Aid/CPR, and a multitude of Rider Education Classes. At
region you will have these, plus Officer Certification Program (OCP), University Trainer Development Program (UTDP)
and Leadership Training Program (LTP) Classes just to name a few. At Wing Ding you will have these and more.

Bike and Light shows – you don’t have to enter to have fun watching and looking at some great looking bikes and to
see a great light show of what some of our members have done with their bikes.

The ride to and from the convention

Venders from near and far with some Great Deals

Games, on bike games and some off bike games

Mascots viewing/saving (HINT)

Awards, Couple of the Year (COY), Individual of the Year (IOY) and Chapter of the year just to name a few.

FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN
This is only a short list but I hope this answers your question of “Why should I go to Conventions?”

40 to Phoenix Ride
Have you ever been on the 40-To Phoenix Ride? Have you ever wanted to go on the ride but didn’t because you didn’t
know anyone who was going? Or perhaps you felt like you wouldn’t really be part of the ride since Moriarty is the last stop
before Phoenix. I know it doesn’t sound very exciting to ride from Moriarty to Phoenix in one day, but we did it last year and
had a great time. Since we joined the ride when there was only a day remaining and all the groups were already assigned,
we rode with our own Chapter members which was very familiar and comfortable. That is until we left on the optional ride to
Chula Vista and down the Baja to Ensenada Mexico. Our other chapter members only rode as far as Phoenix then went
elsewhere to visit friends and family, so we were plugged into an existing group, which was a perfect match for us. What a
fun ride! In fact, we had so much fun we’re going to do it again in April, only this time we’re joining the group in Conway Arkansas so we have the full benefit of the ride, well almost, since the ride starts in Wilmington two days before we join them
in Conway. I know a lot of people aren’t comfortable riding with people they don’t know, but we’ve had great experiences
when we’ve left our comfort zones and ventured into the unknown. Last year we rode to Chula Vista with John and Julie
from Florida, Orman from South Carolina, Greg from Pennsylvania and Bill and Cheryl from South Dakota. What a nice
group of people! We became friends very quickly and have stayed in contact through Face Book and e-mail. Unfortunately, due to family commitments Orman and Julie and John won’t be joining the ride this year, but we look forward to seeing Bill and Cheryl and others that we met that weren’t in our riding group. We are also excited about meeting the new people in the group in which we have been assigned in Conway.
We would like to invite anybody that wants to ride to Conway with us to please let us know and go the following
link and register for the ride. To register "Click" here. (http://utility.gwrra.org/40-to-phoenix-registration/)
You may only want to ride to Conway and back to Moriarty, it doesn’t matter! What matters is that if you want to join the
ride, you pick a spot where you want to start and where you want to stop! It may be El Reno OK, or Amarillo or Moriarty.
Ride the ride according to your own schedule. Russ Schaeffer, the ride coordinator will send you all the information you
need for hotels and meals after you register. Although the registration deadline is over, there are people who are cancelling
so there is a good chance there will be a spot for you. If you have never toured “The Home office” in Phoenix and met the
staff you will be in for a treat. There will be a reception, a tour of the building, door prizes, pins and patches, rides to various
attractions in the area and an optional meal with the group in the evening.
We are looking forward to visiting the GWRRA store at the home office and seeing all the products that are available for us
to put in the District Goodie Store. If you have visited the store on line and have seen anything you would like to see in our
Goodie Store, just give us a holler and a shout! So with that said, think about joining us for a ride that you will always remember and hopefully will want to repeat next year. In the meantime, have fun and most of all be safe where ever you
choose to ride.
