New business invites stories
Silver Room seeks to carry adult storytelling tradition to Hyde Park
By ALEXIS MILLER
Staff Writer
The art of storytelling has long
been passed down within African
culture as a means to share rich oral
history. Later, storytelling passed
onto Blacks in America, who
utilized the oral traditions to
transcend the harsh conditions of
slavery and give voice to the
struggles and triumphs they faced on
a daily basis. Through storytelling,
questions were answered, history
was conveyed and lifelong lessons
were taught and learned. The most
common form of storytelling among
these enslaved people was the folk
tale.
To the African in slavery, the “Brer
Rabbit” story was a source of
information and strategy. The
storytelling was used as a teaching
tool and gave these enslaved people
a vehicle to empower themselves in
the oppressed environment. Today,
storytelling remains a powerful tool
for sharing the joys and tears that
make up our day-to-day journey.
Last Thursday at the Silver Room,
1506 E. 53rd St., Hyde Parkers
embraced the art of storytelling
during the Grown Folks Stories
Event.
Local storyteller Cara Brigandi
hosted no-notes tales by amateur and
professional storytellers. “Grown
Folks Stories” is a gathering of
people from all walks of life, from
all sides of the city, who come
together to tell their story. Differing
from a reading, spoken word or
slam, the Storytelling involved a
people on the mic, one at a time,
surrounded by peers, sharing a part
of themselves.
Brigandi engaged the crowd,
pulling the next storytellers name
from a hat and creating segues
between stories, while fitting in a
few of her own. The stories ranged
from adoption to motorcycle rides,
lost loves to bird rescue. During
“Grown Folks Stories” any story
could be told as long as it stayed
within the five-minute time
restriction.
One of the event attendees and
Hyde Park resident Samira Malik
said that getting a chance to tell her
story within an intimate group of

One of the discussion topics on

Hip-hop pastor wins Emmy Tacos slated for Ribs ‘N’ Bibs
By SAM RAPPAPORT
Staff Writer
Local pastor and hip-hop artist Julian
DeShazier, also known by his stage-name
‘J.Kwest,’ recently won an Emmy for his
role in a short film commemorating the
75th anniversary of the classic Billie
Holliday song “Strange Fruit.”
In late June, DeShazier was one of a team
of filmmakers that received an Emmy in
the category of Historical/Cultural Program
or Special from The National Academy of
Television Arts and Sciences, Lower Great
Lakes Chapter.
DeShazier said he signed on as a writer
and musician for the project, entitled
“Strange Fruit,” after being contacted by
SALT,
a
Christian,
not-for-profit
production company.
DeShazier said the conception for the
short film grew out of the current climate
surrounding police violence in African
American neighborhoods.
“There was this intense racial tension
coming into the spotlight,” DeShazier said.
“The song Strange Fruit also came from
this intense racial moment, we saw a
parallel. We asked ourselves, ‘What is the
artistic response to what is happening
now?’”
In 2010, DeShazier was named Senior
Pastor at University Church, 5655 S.
University Ave., becoming the youngest
pastor in the congregation’s history.
DeShazier said more pastors should form
a deeper connection to the communities
they serve.
“We need pastors that are more deeply
connected to the conversations of the
community,” DeShazier said. “I think
church is a powerful institution. It’s not
about making more Christians, it’s about
what faith can do in a community.”

Fruit” and listen to DeShazier in

The former Ribs ‘N Bibs building, 5300 S.
Dorchester Ave., is currently under
construction and will soon be the home of
the Hyde Park Taco Station. The restaurant
is expected to open in mid-September,
according to restaurant owner Edgar
Vasquez.
Vasquez describes Hyde Park Taco Station
as Mexican fast gourmet street food made
from farm-fresh ingredients.
Vasquez, who was involved in the design
and launch of Harper Court’s Ja’Grill with
Tony Coates, chose Hyde Park as the
location for his restaurant because he said
the neighborhood has “a great sense of
energy.”
Vasquez said, “People in Hyde Park are
friendly, approachable and excited, and I
couldn’t be more happy to be a part of the
community.”
The restaurant will launch this fall, with
BYOB service and a liquor license
anticipated in summer 2016.

Herb Kent to be honored at event
By EMMA HERMAN
Herald Intern
Music abounds in Hyde Park this
summer, with multiple free concerts
happening throughout the neighborhood
each week. Newly added to the roster of
events is a free open-air music series at
Harper Court, co-hosted by the
University of Chicago and Eric
Williams, owner of the recently-opened
jewelry and apparel shop The Silver
Room, 1506 E. 53rd St. The concerts
are scheduled for the last Wednesday of
each month from July to September and
will be held in the courtyard area of
Harper Court, in the same space as the
weekly farmers’ market.
The three events, which will all run
from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., feature both
music and dancing, with a different
genre each month. July 29 is Steppers
Night, with radio host Herb Kent and
DJ Calvin Haynes hosting. At 7:30
p.m., Wallace E. Goode Jr., president of
the Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce,
plans to present Kent with a key to the
neighborhood in recognition of his long
career and other accomplishments. In
2009, the Guinness Book of World
Records certified Kent as the world’s
longest serving DJ. Kent, who is from
the South Side, graduated from Hyde
Park High School and started working
on the air as a teenager before studying
broadcasting
at
Northwestern
University.
The second and third events in the
series will be jazz and salsa/Brazilianthemed, respectively. On Aug. 26, Kahil
El’Zabar will bring his band and play
alongside DJ Duane Powell and on
Sept. 30, Bossa Tres, DJ Kimani
Rashaad and Jose “Papo” Santiago will
each play a set, preceded by salsa
dancing lessons hosted by Roger Noel
from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The
restaurants at Harper Court will be open
and paid parking will be available in the
Harper Court garage as well as in the
lot near Harper Avenue and surrounding
streets.
“A big part of my store is the event
aspect and I’m really happy to be able
to partner with the university to curate
these three events for the community,”
said Eric Williams, owner of The Silver
Room, which recently relocated from
Wicker Park to Hyde Park this past
spring.
In addition to being a retail business,
The Silver Room doubles as an art
gallery and community gathering space.

CPS budget hurts local schools
By SAM RAPPAPORT
Staff Writer
Jesse Ruiz, interim CEO for Chicago
Public Schools (CPS), said in a press
conference on Monday, July 13, that CPS
would lose $106 million in funding from
the state this year. The statement comes as
Chicago schools are presented with
individual budgets for fiscal year 2016.
“We’re disappointed that Springfield has
not partnered with us for a comprehensive
solution to our budget crisis,” Ruiz said.
“No one would argue that these are the
budgets that we would like to be presenting,
but they reflect the reality of where we are
today; a budget deficit of more than $1
billion; the demands of a broken pension
system; and a state education funding that is
near last in the country.”
Kenwood Academy will lose $387,757 in
funding from FY 2015 to FY 2016. Hyde
Park High School will lose $54,870.
Murray Elementary will see its funding
drop by $102,262. Ray and Shoesmith
Elementary Schools have escaped the cuts
and will see their funding increase by
$18,147 and $65,311, respectively.
Wendy Katten, Executive Director of
Raise Your Hand, an organization of CPS
parents across the city, claims that Chicago
families are fearful of what’s to come.
“Parents are in a total panic,” Katten said
over the phone. “They don’t know how
their schools are going to survive. The
notion that cuts won’t hit the classrooms is
completely false. I think parents are
showing disgust and anger in elected
officials.” Raise Your Hand has an active
chapter in Hyde Park that has, among other
efforts, loudly protested the closing of
Dyett.
The announcement arrives two years after
CPS approved the largest school closure in
Chicago’s history. In an effort to balance its
budget, CPS closed just under 50 schools
across Chicago.
Hyde Parkers felt the effects of CPS’s
sweeping cuts after Canter Elementary,
4959 S. Blackstone Ave., finished a phaseout in June 2014.
In Washington Park, Walter H. Dyett High
School, 555 E. 51st St., closed its doors after
finishing a phase-out this past June.
Ruiz cited the “broken pension system” as
the reason CPS must now decide between
funding classrooms and making pension
payments.
“We are trying to keep cuts from the
classroom door, we are not able to keep them
from the schools themselves,” Ruiz said.
In a written statement, CPS revealed that it
plans on unveiling a budget later this summer
that relies on $500 million in pension reform
from Springfield.
According to the statement, if the state fails
to partner on a solution, the district will be
forced to turn to alternatives that will include
a combination of unsustainable borrowing
and additional cuts to balance the budget
before the second half of the school year.
Ginger Ostro, CPS CFO, pointed out that
CPS funding has decreased every year since
2010.
In spite of this, CPS will work to maintain
its student-based budgeting rate from the
2015 fiscal year. The budgeting rate for high
school students this year is unchanged, at

A 40-year-old apology to David Axelrod Locals report on aging conference
By CHERYL KRAVITZ
Sometimes things take awhile. Saying
“you were right” is one of them.
I peaked pretty young. I started working as
a journalist at the age of 18 on the South
Side of Chicago, best known for Bad Boy
Leroy Brown, Barack Obama, and, in many
circles, David Axelrod.
By the age of 21 I was the editor of the
Hyde Park Herald newspaper. The
newspaper was founded in 1882, and always
claimed to be “Chicago’s Oldest Community
Newspaper.” Hyde Park was a double
whammy of the best and worst of Chicagostyle politics, intellectuals on every street,
radicals and the looming influence of
the University of Chicago. I
was at the right place at the
right time.
The staff of the Herald was
all young and enthusiastic.
The grown up was our
general manager Bo, who
knew exactly what he was dealing with. He
left all the editorial work to me, liking
nothing better than to chomp his cigar, sell
display ads and make fun of the Hyde
Park establishment, such as they were. He
was one of the few African American
newspaper general managers in the business
at that time. I didn’t drive and his favorite
thing to do was to pick me up from my
parents’ home on the then-all-white
Southwest Side, honk his car horn and yell
“where’s my woman?” I miss him.
One day our political columnist, Tom, let
us know he was leaving. I wrung my hands
in despair. I was already working with our
stable of Hyde Park freelance writers,
covering all the hard news stories and
researching and writing our investigative
series every few months. I could write color
stories on candidates but had no clue how to
REALLY cover Chicago politics. We needed
a political columnist and reporter and we
needed one who knew what he or she was
doing.
Sort of on cue, Bo came into my office
with a disheveled young man. He had wild
black hair, kind eyes and an eagerness I
recognized. I’d seen it in my mirror. He
introduced me to our new political reporter,
David Axelrod. David was willing to work
for $15 a week. He was 19 and a student at
the University of Chicago. I adored him
from the start.
During that time period I was dating a man
who would eventually become my husband.
He was the head of the Hyde Park Jewish
Community Center. He was erudite, good
looking and swept me off my
feet. He seemed like my
dream come true.
Time passed and there were
little warning signs about him
that I chose to ignore. We
wound up getting engaged.
He was fired from the JCC and offered a job
in Tulsa. David took my apartment and I
headed south. David kept telling me he felt
like something was off. He didn’t need to
move into my apartment, I didn’t need to
leave Chicago, and whatever was wrong
could be solved.
I didn’t listen. I was severely abused. I
almost lost my life. Divorced, I moved to
D.C. for a job and never left. I followed the
trajectory of David’s career. Someday I
would let him know he was right.
Gaithersburg, Md., recently held its sixth
annual book festival. I noticed David was on
the roster of authors. He mentions the Herald
in his book “Believer: My Forty Years in
Politics.” I asked if there was any way I
could spend some time with him. He said
Special letter

Editor’s note: Members of the Hyde Park
Older Women’s League (OWL) and Chicago
Hyde Park Village (CHPV) wrote this letter
sharing their thoughts on this year’s White
House Conference on Aging.
The White House Conference on Aging is
held every 10 years. This year it was held in
Washington, D.C., on July 13 and streamed
by computer connection to 600 sites
throughout the country. Several Hyde Park
representatives from the Hyde Park Older
Women’s League (OWL) and Chicago
Hyde Park Village (CHPV) joined about 30
to 35 others at a “viewing site” at University
of Illinois Chicago (UIC), one of seven sites
in Chicago.
The most striking theme discussed at the
conference
was
the
population
demographics that show
there are now 10,000 people
turning 65 years of age every
day. This is expected to go on
for the next 15 years. This
many
people
entering
retirement and living for
another 20 to 30 years calls for a
reexamination of what retirement really is
going to be.
Several specific issues were raised
regarding caregivers for elderly disabled,
financial planning for a secure retirement,
intergenerational connections, elder justice
and abuse and technology for the aging.
Caregivers are often family members or
low-paid staff workers, who receive little
support, and those who are paid staff
receive poverty-level income. As the elderly
population balloons, attention needs to be
paid to recognizing the importance of
caregivers by giving them a living wage.
Preparing for retirement is often not even
on the radar of younger people, and there
were several presenters discussing how to
make a habit of putting even small amounts
aside in an IRA. The important thing is to
educate young adults to the power of
compounded
interest
from
early
investments.
The
panel
on
intergenerational
connections pointed out that families now
often have multiple generations alive,
providing leadership, support and guidance
for each other. While this is true for
families, we also need to think of ways of
connecting non-related generations. One
panelist noted how tutoring for elementary
grades was one very successful way to use
the knowledge and experience of older
persons.
Elder abuse, both physical and financial,
happens to two out of every 10 senior
citizens. Walgreens had a
representative who talked
about how their clinics are in
a position to screen for
abuse,
and
a
bank
representative talked about
how he trained all his staff to
spot potential fraud/abuse and coordinated
activities with the local police. This banker
said he created a “fraud award” for any of
his staff who recognized seniors being
defrauded and prevented it from happening.
He was surprised that he was giving out
weekly awards, but gratified at the misery
they were heading off.
The technology panel noted that when
technology is at its best we don’t even think
of it as technology and are certainly not
afraid of using it. Microwaves and TVs are
examples of routine technology. Computers
and smart phones are often thought of as
requiring a long learning curve, but the
panel noted that engineers are working to
make them as routine as the rest of
technology we have gotten used to.

enlisted the help of some of the homeless individuals who
frequent the pavilion: using brooms and dustpans stored in
the structure, those who sleep there one night can tidy up
when they leave in the morning.
Thanks to the intensive cleanup efforts, there are now
individuals, families and organizations using the shelter
nearly every weekend this summer. “There’s now a huge
network of people from outside the community who come
on the weekends” to use not only the pavilion, but also other
park spaces that the JPAC has helped to maintain, says
McCurry. Other improvements envisioned for the Iowa
building and its immediate surroundings include a garden
and a public art installation.
Indira Johnson, who holds a masters degree from the
School of the Art Institute of Chicago, is, in addition to
being an artist, a peace activist and nonviolence educator.
One of her projects, titled Ten Thousand Ripples, involved
the installation of one hundred half-buried Buddha heads in
neighborhoods across the city, especially in areas
characterized by violence. Efforts to place two of these
statues at the pavilion, which was the site of a shooting last
summer, are underway.
In addition to restoring the pavilion, one of the next tasks
on McCurry’s agenda is the repair of all the playgrounds in
the area. These projects are not merely for aesthetic value.
As McCurry says, “communities come together around
these parks…communities come together where they feel
safe,” adding “our parks really are where the neighborhood
meets in all the best ways.”
Now with functioning lights and clean floors, McCurry
hopes the Iowa Pavilion will fulfill its potential as one such
safe community space.

Dyett group squares off against pols
By SAM RAPPAPORT
Staff Writer
A Bronzeville community organization is
pitting itself against Mayor Rahm
Emmanuel and Ald. Will Burns (4th) in an
effort to bring an open enrollment, Chicago
Public Schools (CPS)-operated high school
into the neighborhood. Members of the
Coalition to Revitalize Dyett High School
along with Bronzeville residents and CPS
teachers gathered at City Hall, Tuesday, July
14, to speak out against the politicians,
whom they feel have ignored community
consensus.
The event, which consisted of a press
conference and rally, is the coalition’s latest
attempt to keep a contract school out of the
South Side neighborhood. The group has
held a number of protests and sit-ins at CPS
headquarters, the mayor’s office and Burns’
office, since the school board voted to phase
out Dyett in 2012. =
In response to community pressure, CPS
issued a request for proposal (RFP) for a new
high school in Dyett’s place, in December
2014. Currently, the school board is
considering three proposals.
Charles Campbell, the former principle of
Dyett, has offered a proposal for a sportscentral high school named Washington Park
Career Academy.
Little Black Pearl, a non-profit centered in
South Kenwood, introduced plans for a high
school with an emphasis on art and design.
The third proposal, backed by the Coalition
to Revitalize Dyett, calls for an openenrollment, neighborhood school called
Dyett Global Leadership and Green
Technology High School. The coalition
claims that this proposal boasts
overwhelming support from the community
and was the only proposition developed
through engagement with local residents and
neighborhood organizations.

proud of him for that. But for me, his finest
hour came when I was able to tell him I’m

Cool move
Jackson Park restoration moving
By EMMA HERMAN
Herald Intern
The restoration of Jackson Park continues
steadily, with the first phase of restoration
complete and the second in progress.
Managed by a partnership between the
Chicago Park District and the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers, the ecological
restoration aims to revitalize the park’s
various habitats and populations of native
species.
The first phase, which involved the
removal of dead and downed trees, the
draining and clearing of the lagoon and the
removal of invasive species, is complete.
The second phase, the replenishment of
native species, continues. According to a
March project update published by the
Army Corps of Engineers, the five-year
project will ultimately include the planting
of more than 400,000 types of trees, shrubs
and grasses; the grading and stabilization of
approximately eight acres of lagoon
shorelines and the reintroduction of native
fish communities; the paving of pathways
and overlooks throughout the park and the
removal and management of invasive and
non-native plants.
Fences blocking Wooded Isle and Osaka
Garden went up in April and the areas are
still closed. They will continue to be closed
until fall, in order to give newly planted
seeds a chance to grow and establish root
systems undisturbed. A burn to clear out any
trace of invasive species is also scheduled
for the fall.

The Washington Park Farm Stand, where
neighborhood high school students grow
all the plants and produce, has returned this
summer.
The Washington Park Farm Stand, which
is sponsored by the Chicago Botanic
Garden and Windy City Harvest Markets,
is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every
Wednesday through Oct. 7 adjacent to
Dyett High School, 555 E. 51st St. LINK
and WIC/Senior Farmers Market Coupons
are accepted.
“I like the environment,” said Anqwnett
Redmont, high school student and member
of the vending crew, who was referred to
the program through a job listing at her
school. “I’ve been here for three seasons. I
really like the peace, it’s very tranquil
here.”
High school student and farm crew leader
Natasha Coleman said, “My favorite part is
the harvesting. You know, getting to see the
food coming in.”
There are about 30 students and four crew
leaders that tend the farm and operate the
farmer’s market. Students maintain the
garden from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. Monday
through Friday.
Within the garden are rows and rows of
separated vegetable, herb and fruit plots.
The students have their own compost and
beehives as well.
“It’s a lot,” Coleman said. “Some days are
good for the plants, other days
aren’t...Yeah, it’s a lot to do, but here, we
try to do everything as organic as we can.”
Redmont said, “ I’m definitely doing this
again next year.”

Yesomi Umolu has been appointed as the
new curator at the Logan Center for the
Arts. Starting Aug. 3, Umolu will oversee
exhibitions and work closely with the
university and city to develop new art
programs.
“In Yesomi, we have found a curator who
will advance the adventurous, collaborative
and inquisitive approach that has
characterized Logan Center Exhibitions
since its founding,” said Bill Michel,
executive director of the Logan Center. “I
look forward to experiencing the inspiring
and thought-provoking work she will bring

“The money follows the students, where we
see decreases in enrollment, we will see
decreases in funding,” said Ostro.
CPS have already received $31 million less
in this year’s allocations than they did at the
same time last year.
Before Umolu’s appointment as curator,
she was assistant curator at the Eli and
Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan
State University. She has also been a
traveling university lecturer and speaker,
and has been published in various
catalogues and journals.
“I look forward to continuing the ethos of
experimentation and critical discourse
around contemporary art and culture that
the Logan Center Exhibitions program has
established,” Umolu said. “I am thrilled at
the prospect of collaborating with artists,
scholars and community members who
contribute so greatly to the Logan Center’s

In a press release, Ruiz compared
Chicago’s public schools with those of the
surrounding districts.
“No other district has to choose between
making pension payments or funding
educational programs,” said Ruiz. “Chicago
children should not be treated as secondclass citizens in Illinois. They deserve the
same education that students in Winnetka,
Hinsdale and Aurora receive.”

“Kinky Boots”
RECOMMENDED
Where: Cadillac Palace Theatre, 151 W.
Randolph St.
When: through July 26
Tickets: $25-$108

By ANNE SPISELMAN

W
hen I reviewed the pre-Broadway
premiere of “Kinky Boots” at the
Bank of America Theatre in 2012,
I praised the concept, the music and lyrics
by pop idol Cyndi Lauper, David
Rockwell’s scenic design and many of the
performances. But I thought that Harvey
Fierstein’s book for the musical based on
the 2005 film, which in turn was based on a
true story, still needed a lot of work.
Now “Kinky Boots” is back in a touring
version at the Cadillac Palace Theatre,
having racked up six 2013 Tony Awards in
New York ranging from best musical and
best score to best orchestrations and best
sound design. And I still feel pretty much
the same about it as I did the first time
around, except that this production seems a
bit sloppy. At least it did on opening night.
For starters, the small orchestra wasn’t
very good and at times was slightly out of
sync with the performers. The sound mix
was bad enough that I couldn’t make out
close to half the lyrics from where I was
sitting near the back of the main floor. This
was especially unfortunate because
Lauper’s songs further the plot, and several
are quite witty, among them Lola’s “Sex Is
in the Heel” and Lauren’s “The History of
the Wrong Guys.” Most lean towards heartfelt ballads and anthems, such as Charlie’s
“Soul of a Man,” Lola’s “Hold Me in Your
Heart” and their beautiful duet “Not My
Father’s Son.”
That duet lays out the thematic
underpinnings of the determinedly uplifting
story set in Northampton, England. On the
surface, the tale is about how Charlie Price
(bland Steven Booth), who reluctantly takes
over the failing family shoe factory when
his father dies unexpectedly, turns it around
by switching from conservative men’s shoes
to stiletto-heeled fetish footwear for drag
queens. He does this based on a suggestion
from about-to-be-laid-off worker Lauren
(perky Lindsay Nicole Chambers) that he
find a niche market. The specific idea comes
to him after a chance meeting in London
with Lola (very spirited Kyle Taylor
Parker), a drag queen who says that the
women’s shoes and boots she and her
performing “Angels” wear can’t support
their weight, so the heels tend to break.
Charlie enlists Lola as his designer, leading
to predictable friction with the conservative
town and factory workers.
The heart of the matter, though, is how
Charlie and Lola, a.k.a. Simon, learn to
accept themselves and each other. More
similar than they at first appear, both are
very insecure men — and what it means to
be a man gets a lot of play — who had
issues with their fathers. Eventually they
find they can take control of their lives and
accomplish things they never expected.
And, of course, they do this with each
other’s help.
Such a life-affirming scenario is a sure-fire
success, as is anything with singing and
dancing drag queens, not to mention
working-class blokes who defy our
expectations. But the evening opens with a
dull number about how making shoes at
Price & Son is “The Most Beautiful Thing
in the World.” And the script is full of loose
ends and inconsistencies that need to be
fixed, even if they come from the movie
(which I haven’t seen).
For example, Charlie’s initial effort to bail
out the factory involves going to London to
ask the son of his father’s main competitor
to buy a load of unsold shoes, but this
character never appears again. Charlie’s
Lindsey Gavel in The Hypocrites’ production of “All Our Tragic,” adapted and directed by
Artistic Director Sean Graney.
Evan Hanover
self-absorbed, success-oriented girlfriend,
Nicola (Grace Stockdale), wants him to
abandon the shoe business for the life they
planned in London before his father’s death,
but she doesn’t bother to tell him until late
in the game that the factory is in foreclosure
and his father planned to sell it to a condo
developer because he knew Charlie couldn’t
run it. Naturally, they break up —
something we’ve seen coming from the
beginning — and he and Lauren, who’s
morphed from chewing him out to falling in
love, become a couple.
The build up to the big climax is
something of a muddle, too. Charlie’s plan
to present the new boots at a major shoe
show in Milan becomes a make-or-break
deal for no compelling reason. However, the
company doesn’t have enough money, and
producing boots that are up to Charlie’s
exacting standards causes myriad tensions
between him and the employees, who walk
out. Lola’s idea of using her Angels as
models,
rather
than
paying
for
professionals, causes a rift between the two
men, and Charlie unleashes an insulting,
racist, sexist tirade at him. Even if we try to
chalk this up to nerves and fear of failure,
the script offers no previous indication that
Charlie is prejudiced in these ways, so the
explosion doesn’t make sense — except as a
device to set up the reconciliation and
finale.
That finale, alas, remains a letdown, even
if it’s the first time we see the ensemble in
glittering thigh-high kinky boot regalia.
We’ve been led to believe that the Milan
show is an elegant affair, but it turns out to
look rather tacky. The feel-good closing
song, “Raise You Up/Just Be,” gets the
intended enthusiastic response, but I left the
theater thinking that “Kinky Boots” could
have been better.

The Hypocrites’ “All Our Tragic” should

After seeing the world premiere of artistic
director Sean Graney’s mash-up of all 32
surviving Greek tragedies by Aeschylus,
Sophocles and Euripides last year, I was
blown away by the scope of the project, the
way Graney infused the timeless stories
with contemporary humor and the sheer
stamina of everyone involved. Though no
one knows what a Dionysian festival was

really like, sharing 12 hours of theater —
including frequent breaks for meals and
snacks - with strangers certainly created a
communal feeling.
I went to the reprise of “All Our Tragic”
with a mixture of anticipation and
hesitation. The length of the show didn’t
bother me, but I worried that it wouldn’t
have as much of an impact as the first time
around.
I needn’t have. If anything, the production
is clearer and tighter than before. The
staging seems a little smoother, and Alison
Siple’s costumes are even more inventive.
Graney said he made revisions to about a
quarter of the script, especially in “Part 3:
Patriotics,” the section focusing on the
Trojan War. The program now has a page
listing the parts — Prehistorics, Politics and
Poetics, as well as Patriotics — the two acts
within each part, and the plays covered in
each act. There’s also a separate key to all
the plays arranged by author.
In addition, the three Odd-Jobs — Ann
Delaney, Lauren Vogel and Kate CarsonGroner — who function as a kind of chorus,
announcing the scenes and the years in
which they take place — now write the
characters names on a big blackboard and
keep score of the deaths. They also
punctuate the action with music, mostly old
American folk songs that fit surprisingly
well, plus a little opera. The configuration of
the stage and the audience seating have been
changed too, improving sight lines. Seating
isn’t assigned, and in a departure from most
theaters, people are encouraged to take
different seats for different acts.
While the absence of the Greek gods is one
of the most glaring differences between
Graney’s adaptation and the original plays,
one of the themes that struck me most this
time was the loss of innocence. The virtues
of childhood are reflected in everything
from the behavior of Herakles’ children to
the props, such as the little book of heroes
Herakles wants to be in and the teddy bear
Orestes clings to.
As the day and evening progress, human
pride, greed, venality and revenge seem to
prevail more and more. Even the best
intentions lead to bad deeds, and the crimes
escalate, ultimately to matricide. Indeed,
many of the characters kill what they love
most, be it Agamemnon sacrificing his
daughter or an enraged Ajax slaughtering his
sheep. The bodies pile up, along with a
sense of waste. The intriguing — if drawn
out — finale brings a sense of closure but
not much in the way of redemption.
Most of the ensemble remains the same, as
do the standouts. They include Walter
Briggs, whose goofily good-willed but
clueless Herakles is simultaneously
endearing and infuriating, and whose crossdressing Pentheus the Gaunt is very funny.
Ryan Bourque is equally compelling as the
noble Theseus and the weak, tea-loving
Menelaus, who’s no match for Emily
Casey’s Helen. Erin Barlow magically
morphs from an incredibly well-grounded
and admirable Antigone to airhead
Hermione. In truth, though, everyone is
terrific.
My main quibble with “All Our Tragic” is
some of the characters Graney left out or
condensed into composites. Perhaps because
I’m quite familiar with Sophocles’
“Antigone,” I miss her sister, Ismene, who
provides balance in the play. The absence of
King Priam from Troy seems very strange,
as does the way Graney handles the rift
between Agamemnon (Briggs) and Achilles
Erin Barlow and John Taflan in The Hypocrites’ production of “All Our Tragic,” adapted
and directed by Artistic Director Sean Graney.
Evan Hanover
(Breon Arzell). It causes Achilles to retreat
to his tent for years, and the Greeks almost
lose the war. But Graney turns it into an
insider-y joke so as not to undercut the
relationship between Achilles and Patroklos
(John Taflan).
One other little thing: The food, which is
provided by Inspiration Kitchens, is
vegetarian, and beverages aren’t included. I
liked the brownies best.
Oh, and if “All Our Tragic” returns again,
you can be sure I’ll be there.

Leo Fall operetta
falls short
Where: Vittum Theater, 1012 N. Noble St.
When: through Aug. 2
Tickets: chicagofolksoperetta.org
By M.L. RANTALA
Classical Music Critic
L
eo Fall (1873 – 1925) was one of the
great composers of operettas. He got
his early training at the Vienna
Conservatory and once worked as a
violinist in Franz Lehár’s orchestra. He
wrote his first operetta in 1907.
Chicago Folks Operetta, a plucky troupe
which mounts forgotten operettas on
shoestring budgets, has a history of
splendid results not compromised by their
relative lack of funds. This year it celebrates
its tenth anniversary with Leo Fall’s 1922
operetta “Madame Pompadour,” a
lighthearted look at the commoner who
became not only the mistress of King Louis
XV, but one of his most trusted advisors.
Leo Fall’s music is engaging and frothy.
He can conjure big production numbers as
easily as intimate vignettes. The score for
“Madame Pompadour” ingeniously shifts,
like the colors and patterns of a
kaleidoscope, keeping the story moving
while establishing a variety of moods on the
stage.
Fall can turn out charming waltz tunes
both beautiful and memorable, so much so I
find it hard to believe that anyone left the
Vittum Theater on opening night this past
Friday without one of his melodies swirling
playfully in the mind. “Oh, I’m Feeling so
Naughty Today,” “Come with Me Dear”
and “Madame Pompadour” were three
waltzes in this operetta, each as lovely as
the next.
CFO music director Anthony Barrese
leads a 21-piece orchestra, one increment
bigger than the 20-member ensemble he led
in last year’s “Ball at the Savoy” and the
results are excellent. Last year’s intonation
problems in the strings have been
eliminated and the sound from the back of
the stage (the Vittum Theater has no pit) is
joyful. There were occasional coordination
problems between the instruments and the
singers, but these mismatches were always
quickly rectified. The brass was notably
perky and gleaming and the harp was
particularly alluring. Last year Barrese put
down his baton briefly to take up the
accordion and this year he sported a guitar
for the final verse of a humorous number.
“Madame Pompadour” has strong singing,
led by Kimberly McCord in the title role.
She displays both strength and quickwittedness and has a charismatic stage
presence. Her sound is particularly
beautiful in quiet moments where even her
highest notes rest gracefully on the ear. Her
only misstep is at the end of the first act
when she soars above the orchestra and
ensemble in a rather sour money-note. But
she returns for the rest of the opera in fine
voice.
Gerald Frantzen, the artistic director of
CFO, takes on, as he so often does, the male
lead. He’s handsome and creates a wholly
likeable René, a man disguising himself in
order to have some fun slumming in a
disreputable tavern.
Madame Pompadour’s companion Belotte
is given wide-eyed life by Alison Kelly,
who is also the general director of CFO.
She sings with a light touch and a gorgeous
smile.
Erich Buchholz is the lower class poet
Calicot who loves to diss not only Voltaire
but Madame Pompadour herself. He is
equally comfortable singing with bombast
in the opening and with quivering fear when
Calicot finds himself in dire trouble.
Jonah Winston is an admirable King Louis
XV who combines regal bearing with
comedic confusion.
The villains of the piece are a pair of cops
played with delicious wickedness by Robert
Morrissey and Matt Dyson. Rachel Olson
and Nicholas Pulikowski round out the rest
of the major players in the large cast of
characters.
There are powdered wigs galore in this
production directed by Amy Hutchison
which embraces the 18th century setting.
The stage dressing is generally sparse and
inoffensive, with just enough props and
furniture to help move the story along.
With
great
music
and
strong
performances, this operetta has a lot going
for it. But it also has one terrible weakness:
the libretto is larded with repetitive and dull
jokes and an incredibly silly (even for
operetta) plot device to stop Madame
Pompadour and René from doing
something they ought not to do. The
English translation is by Frantzen and
Hersh Glagov, who have paired up for
several CFO translations in the past. This is
without question the weakest effort on their
part I have experienced. Not being familiar
with the original libretto, I can only guess
that they have provided a translation which
is rather too close to the original when, in
fact, the tired and well-worn humor needs
considerable revision and cuts to make it
funny for a 21st century audience. Relying
heavily, for instance, on sex jokes which
would make only 14-year-old boys giggle
explains why the opening night audience
was so cold and quiet when it was clear that
the producers were expecting big laughs
which never materialized.
However, if CFO treats opening night as
merely a second dress rehearsal there is
every chance that in a few performances the
show will be improved by cuts and some
strategic re-writes. For that reason, I can
recommend this show because the music
already makes it a winner.

Tom Huyck, 77
Don Willard, 73
Hyde Park resident Don Willard passed
away peacefully in his home on July 12,
2015, surrounded by family. The
glioblastoma brain tumor that took his life
was discovered on May 3.
Willard was born in Cambridge, Mass.,
in 1942. He served with the US Air Force,
graduated from Boston College in 1968
and came to Hyde Park to study social
psychology at the University of Chicago.
He lived a full and happy life and was
loved and admired for his strong spirit,
optimism and humor. He was also
appreciated by many for his intelligence
and passion; he never committed to
anything without giving it 100 percent and
was selflessly dedicated to improving
communities and the lives of others.
In his personal life, his moral compass
was very strong, and ethical values drove
his every life choice. He left academia in
the 1970s to become one of the earliest
stay-at-home dads. However, he remained
a lifelong scholar, enriched by the
university community.
Willard’s love for children was a primary
focus in his life, and he influenced the
lives of thousands through his dedication.
As coach of the South Side Stars swim
team, Willard grew a small team of 25
swimmers into a nationally recognized
team of more than 150, all along
encouraging young people to achieve their
personal best. His efforts led to a
community
of
strong,
confident
swimmers, many of whom went on to
become part of champion teams at
Kenwood Academy.
For his own personal fitness and wellbeing Willard maintained a daily routine at
Ratner Gym from its opening and
Call for
Open House
developed friendships
with a large group of
“regulars.”
More
recently, he enhanced
his joy of swimming by
his involvement in a
group known locally as
the Point swimmers
and
swam
competitively for the
first time at age 70 in
Chicago’s
Big
Don Willard
Shoulders Open Water
Swim Classic. The time
he spent with those two communities
nourished him greatly.
For years Willard volunteered much of
his time in service of William H. Ray
School, assisting in his grandsons’
classrooms and on field trips, serving as
the community representative to the Local
School Council, and on the Gardening,
School
Improvement
and
Safety
committees. He also volunteered regularly
unloading the food truck for the Hyde Park
and Kenwood Food Pantry.
Willard is survived by Barbara, his wife
of 50 years; his daughters Meredith (Cris
Barrett), Robin (Bevis Pardee); his son
Chris (Courtney Prokopas); his grandsons
Gabriel, Luke and Liam Barrett, and
Auden and Ashleigh Pardee; his sister
Ellen; his brother Bill and a host of nieces,
nephews, cousins and friends.
A celebration of Willards’s life will be
held at the Hyde Park Union Church, 5600
S. Woodlawn Ave., from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.,
Sunday, Aug. 2. In lieu of flowers, the
family requests that donations be mailed to
“Friends of Ray,” at Ray School, 5631 S.
Kimbark Ave., Chicago, IL 60637.
Long-time Hyde Park resident and
lawyer, William Thomas “Tom” Huyck
passed away peacefully in his sleep July 10
after a long illness. He was 77.
Huyck was born in Des Moines, Iowa,
and attended Dartmouth College before
becoming a graduate of the University of
Chicago Law School. He practiced law in
Chicago for almost 50 years, in both public
and private sectors. Huyck was a prosecutor
for both the U.S. Department of Justice and
the U.S. Attorney’s office before going into
private practice. In 1984, Huyck
successfully argued the case Liparota v.
United States before the Supreme Court.
His clients appreciated his determination,
kindness and skill.
Huyck was also passionate about civil
justice, particularly civil and women’s
rights. His eloquent language made him an
early and strong advocate for justice of all
people.
Huyck met his wife of 54 years, Margaret,
while the pair were in high school. They
started dating in college while she was
attending Vassar. In 1961, they both moved
to Hyde Park to attend the University of
Chicago, him for a law degree and her for a
DYETT
from page 6
spoke on the coalition’s willingness to work
with community organizations.
“The Coalition to Revitalize Dyett
actually came to Hyde Park and Bronzeville
meetings,” Hamilton said. “The mayor and
the alderman need to stand with us.”
Jayme Robinson, a spokesperson for the
Kenwood-Oakland
Community
Organization - a member group of the
Coalition to Revitalize Dyett - contrasted
the school reform efforts of South Side
parents with those on the North Side of
Chicago.
“While white, North Side parents are
heard, our voices are thrown to the
wayside,” Robinson said. “This is about
disinvestment in Black and brown
students.”
Marc Kaplan, chairman of Northside
Action for Justice, echoed Robinson’s
claims.
“White, middle-class parents have gotten
immediate action from the board,” Kaplan
said. “The Noble Charter school proposal
was killed two to three weeks after it was
submitted.”
Robinson and Kaplan’s assertions are in
reference to the Uptown neighborhood’s
successful campaign against Noble
Academy’s proposal to move a charter
school onto Irving Park Road. Noble
Academy withdrew its proposal in June,
after meeting fierce opposition from elected
officials and the public.
Phillip Cantor, a CPS science teacher of
12 years and member of Teachers for Social
Justice, attended Tuesday’s event because
he believes that Dyett Global Leadership
and Green Technology High School could
function as a model for future community
schools.
“We think kids, wherever they are,
deserve good schools,” Cantor said. “But
the way that CPS has been restructuring has
doctorate
in
psychology. They have
lived here ever since.
Huyck was actively
involved in the arts,
and loved music in
particular. He was
often at the theater or
at concerts, and served
on the boards of the

Children’s
Choir and Chicago a

capella. He also loved
biking, and often biked
to work downtown. Huyck loved to travel
and give visitors tours of the city.
Huyck is survived by his loving wife
Margaret, daughters Liz and Karen,
granddaughter Madeline and countless
friends and family who will miss his gentle
spirit and unfailing sense of humor.
There will be a memorial service at 1 p.m.

5650 S. Woodlawn Ave. His family asks
that instead of flowers, contributions to

been to redistribute resources to wealthier
neighborhoods.”
Jitu Brown, an education organizer with
the
Kenwood-Oakland
Community
Organization, argued that the fight for Dyett
High School has implications beyond the
Bronzeville neighborhood.
“This is bigger than Dyett,” Brown
explained. “This is about who deserves
public services. Parents in affluent
communities have not had to advocate as
much as we do.”
Brown went on to denounce the
privatization of Chicago’s public schools.
“We want to revitalize public education in
Chicago,” Brown said. “That’s not going to
happen with charter and contract schools
where the goal is profit in the marketplace.”
Brown contends that the issue of
privatization marks a strong divide between
Burns and the Coalition to Revitalize Dyett.
“Our issue with Burns is that he has no
interest in representing low-income
families,” Brown said. “His policy has been
to push privatization. We have a
fundamental disagreement.”
Prentice Butler, director of constituent
services for Burns, said, “This is an open
RFP process. Anyone who wants to submit
a school proposal may do that.”
In response to the coalition’s criticisms,
CPS spokesperson Bill McCaffrey issued
the following written statement:
“Chicago Public Schools is committed to a
community driven process that will identify
a high-quality education option for the
former Dyett site. We continue to review
applications garnered by the 2014 RFP, and
look forward to receiving further feedback
at the upcoming community hearing to
inform a decision that will best serve the
students and families in this community.”
The Board of Education will decide on a
proposal by Aug. 26. The next community
hearing for the three proposals will take
place Aug. 10 at the CPS Loop office, 42 W.
Madison St.
