THE REGGIO APPROACH Reggio Emilia philosophy is based upon the following set of principles:
• Children must have some control over the direction of their learning;
• Children must be able to learn through experiences of touching, moving, listening, seeing, and hearing;
• Children have a relationship with other children and with material items in the world that children must be allowed to explore and
• Children must have endless ways and opportunities to express themselves.
Let’s keep dreaming. Keep dreaming big. It is very exciting. Are you ready to jump in!
"When we look in a mirror we see ourselves and when we look at the practice and pedagogy of the Reggio Emilia schools we find a provocation to challenge our assumptions and question our
practice. Pedagogy is a matter of choice, choosing from many possibilities, a process that is informed by continual questioning, reflection and research." Loris Malaguzzi” Founder of the Reggio
Approach
ST MEL’S PARISH EDUCATION BOARD (PEB) Our P.E.B. is an active group of people made up of school and kindergarten parents, who along with St Mel’s Parish, work to build St Mel’s
community. Meetings are held once a month to actively work on leading our learning community.
Our PEB is made up of the following governance:
Fr. Joven Lustre: Parish Priest
Dom Poppa: Principal
Wendy Baldwin: Deputy Principal
Miriam Stewart: Kindergarten Director
Leanne Cator: OSHC
Kellie Raymer: Administration
Current chairperson: Carl Byrne
Meetings are held on the 3rd and 8th Thursday of the term from 7:30 pm – 9pm. Our Annual General meeting is held in Term Three with officer
bearers and new committee members being elected.
To raise issues of a more general nature, or to provide suggestions on the running of the school or other like matters, contact the Principal, the Parish
Education Board Chair or any member of the PEB.
ST MEL’S PARENTS SOCIAL CLUB (PSC)
The aim of the Social Club is to ‘raise funds, while creating fun’. As a group of parents and friends the Social Club organises many events such as
the Easter Egg Raffle, Mother’s Day Stall, Father’s nights, Winter Market and so on. They meet once a month, or as the need arises (see St Mel’s
Newsletter for dates.)
The following executive roles are held: President, Assistant President, Secretary and Treasurer, with general committee members to support
organizational issues. The current is Sarah Maloney. Executives role are called for at the AGM in Term Three. All
Welcome
At St Mel’s we believe that all people who participate in our school life have the right to feel safe and be safe. With that safety comes the sense of
belonging, being happy and the opportunities to succeed. It is also our responsibility that we make others feel safe.

Refer to your St Mel’s Parent Handbook which can be found on our website www.smshepparton.catholic.edu.au in the enrolment downloads
section.
HOME LEARNING
Our home learning expectations require families spending time together each school night. The following guide is for
weeknights and it is up to each family to decide the best way to support and enhance school learning. Doing family chores is
a great home learning experience.
Early Primary Years
Child reading to an adult / adult reading to the child for approximately 15 minutes
Lower Primary Years
Reading for approximately 20 minutes, spelling and number facts, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems, practice.
Upper Primary
Reading for approximately 30 minutes, spelling, number facts and possible project work. Organisation skills are taught in class to develop time
management and independent study skills.
These skills should be reinforced at home e.g. No TV, computer game or electronic devices after eight o’clock or at least an hour before bedtime.
PARENT CONCERNS
Any parent or guardian who has concerns about their child should contact the classroom teacher. If you are unhappy with the way your concerns
are dealt with, or if in your opinion the concerns are very serious, please contact the Principal.

2016 the Year of Mercy
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ,
you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father,
and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him.
Show us your face and we will be saved.
Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money;
the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things;
made Peter weep after his betrayal,
and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.
Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman:
“If you knew the gift of God!”
You are the visible face of the invisible Father,
of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy:
let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified.
You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness
in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error:
let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God.
Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing,
so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord,
and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor,
proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed,
and restore sight to the blind.
We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of
Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.
The logo and the motto together
provide a fitting summary of what the
Jubilee Year is all about. The
motto Merciful Like the Father (taken
from the Gospel of Luke, 6:36)
serves as an invitation to follow the
merciful example of the Father who
asks us not to judge or condemn but
to forgive and to give love and
forgiveness without measure (cfr. Lk
6:37-38).
Amen.
