Six Rules for Managing Credit Card Debt
The recent economic downturn was driven largely by an imploding
housing market. For the first time in decades, homeowners lost
value and entire communities saw massive declines in property
values. But now, at last, that tide has turned in many markets.
That means there’s an inventory of houses available for sale—at
excellent prices—as well as an unprecedented sustained lowinterest rate environment.
If you want to be the master of your credit card debt load,
follow these key rules:
If you’ve been renting and waiting, now is a good time to make
your move.
A number of industry analysts predict that interest rates will rise
slightly over the year, while continuing to stay very affordable.
Home prices are also expected to rise, now that more buyers are
again competing for houses for sale.
But rental rates are rising and expected to continue to rise even
more—as much as 20% in some communities—making it smart
and cost-effective for first-time buyers especially to consider home
ownership. Real estate website Trulia found it is cheaper to buy
than to rent in each of the nation’s 100 biggest metropolitan areas.
If you’re thinking about making the big move, do this now:
• Check your credit reports for accuracy. Go to
annualcreditreport.com and request your free credit report.
If you find errors or omissions, fix the problems as soon as
possible.
• Review your savings. You will need money for a down payment
as well as for the transition expenses of moving and setting up
a new house. If your savings aren’t up to snuff, make that your
priority for the next several months.
• Talk to a TMH Federal Credit Union home loan officer
about prequalifying for a loan. This is the step just ahead of
preapproval—it makes it possible for you to begin shopping for
a house with your eyes wide open about what you can really
afford.Your loan officer can help you prepare for the home
buying process and help you line up your finances for success.

1. Take inventory. How many credit cards do you have? What’s the
balance and minimum monthly payment on each? What’s the total
balance? If it’s more than you thought or can afford, it’s time to pare
down.
2. Check out the cost of your credit cards. What’s the interest rate
on each card? What’s the annual fee? Does your card offer a grace
period? If the card doesn’t have a grace period, or if you carry over a
balance, or take a cash advance, you’re usually charged interest right
away.
3. Get one low-fee or lower-interest card and use it wisely. Make TMH
Federal Credit Union your first stop when starting your search. Check
to see if you can transfer existing debt from your various credit cards
to your new lower-interest credit card.
4. Make the largest monthly payment you can afford. Even though
you may not be able to pay your balance in full, paying the monthly
minimum may do little more than cover the accrued interest.
5. Watch out for “teaser rates.” Your mailbox may be brimming with
unsolicited credit card offers that promise attractive low-interest
rates. But if you read the fine print, you’ll see that after six months or
so the issuer may double the low introductory rate.
6. If you get in over your head, don’t bury it in the sand. If you’re
having trouble making your monthly payments, contact your
creditors before they contact you. If you’re already screening calls
from bill collectors, or refusing to open your mail, you need help.
Contact TMH Federal Credit Union at 850.402.5301. We’re here to
help you get your finances back in order.
If bills have gotten out of hand, consider speaking with a BALANCE
counselor who may be able to arrange a Debt Management Plan.
BALANCE negotiates with creditors to reduce interest and fees so
you can pay your debt quickly and efficiently. As an account holder of
TMH Federal Credit Union, the program’s monthly administration fee of
$35 is waived.
To use the BALANCE program, simply call 888-456-2227. Counselors
are available Monday through Thursday, 5am to 8pm, Friday, 5am to
5pm, and Saturday, 8am to 5pm (EST) or visit www.balancepro.net
for more information.

National Medical Laboratory
Professionals Week April 22-26
National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week was founded in 1975
and will take place April 22-26. YOUR Healthcare Credit Union
would like to acknowledge the 300,000 laboratory professionals around
the country who perform and interpret more than 10 billion laboratory
tests in the US every year. The field was developed in the 1920s and
today the clinical laboratorian is a key member of a health care team. The
theme for National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week 2013, also
known as Lab Week, is “Get
Results.” During this week-long
celebration take a moment to
remember the people behind
the “medical” scene.
To show our appreciation
during Lab Week, April 22-26,
TMH Federal Credit Union
will be giving away pens to
laboratory professionals while
supplies last.

In honor of the dedication, commitment,
and tireless effort of the nearly 3.1 million
registered nurses nationwide to promote
and maintain the health of this nation, the
ANA and TMH Federal Credit Union are
proud to recognize registered nurses
everywhere on this particular

provide seven days a week,

What kid wouldn’t want to
throw on a trench coat, dust
off an old magnifying glass
and slap on a play mustache
to become a detective for
a day? Children everywhere
are intrigued by the thrill
of mysteries and the
detectives that solve them.
Little do these kids know
they also have the ability to
tap into detective mode by
investigating ways to save
and becoming a credit union
savings sleuth during the month of April at the credit
union.

On May 6, 2013, TMH Federal Credit Union is joining the American
