NEW THIS YEAR: We Make Reston community exhibit, part of the global initiative
INSIDE OUT: The People’s Art Project.
Reston Multicultural Festival Mission
The Reston Multicultural Festival is a celebration of the diversity and community spirit that is found in
Reston. This annual event brings together the people of Reston to celebrate our rich medley of cultures.
Family, friends and neighbors are treated to the music, entertainment, dress, food, and cultural treasures
from all over the world that are all right here. This signature Reston event honors the diversity that is one
of our greatest assets. Everyone is encouraged to dress in attire from their own cultural roots and share
the stories that we gather on the pathways of our lives.

We Make Reston:
An INSIDE OUT Project
What does your face stand for? We Make
Reston features large-scale photographic
portraits that showcase our community’s
greatest strength – the multitude of
perspectives and histories people bring to
Reston. We Make Reston was created by the
people of Reston and coordinated by Reston
Community Center and the Initiative for Public Art – Reston. This multi-location exhibit is
presented as part of the INSIDE OUT movement – a participatory art project that transforms
messages of personal identity into giant black and white portraits displayed at various
locations. Everyone is challenged to use black and white photographic portraits to discover,
reveal and share the untold stories and images of people around the world. These digitally
uploaded images are made into posters and sent back to the projects’ group leaders, for
them to exhibit in their own communities. Exhibitions are documented, archived and made
available online at www.insideoutproject.net.
We Make Reston is now on display at the below locations. More than 300 completed
entries were received. One hundred sixty-nine images were selected to appear in the large
black-and-white format throughout Reston. The outside photos will be on display for up to
four weeks depending on weather.

Arts Mirrors Culture

September 3 - November 21
During this three-month exhibit, area artists
are exhibiting 3D pieces in a variety of media,
including ceramics, sculpture, mosaics, stained
glass and wood work, to celebrate the many facets of culture. Artists answered the following
question “How does art mirror culture in your work?” Their answers are revealed alongside
their artwork.

Virtuoso oud musician and composer Rahim
AlHaj was born in Baghdad, Iraq and began
playing the oud (the grandfather of all stringed
instruments) at age nine. Mr. AlHaj won various
awards at the Conservatory and graduated in
1990 with a diploma in composition. He holds
a degree in Arabic Literature from Mustunsariya
University in Baghdad. In 1991, after the first
Gulf War, Mr. AlHaj was forced to leave Iraq
due to his activism against the Saddam Hussein
regime and began his ex-patriot life in Jordan
and Syria. He moved to the US in 2000 as a
political refugee and has resided in Albuquerque,
NM ever since. Rahim became a US citizen on
August 15, 2008.
