As president of Emporia State University, I want to thank you for your role in making a quality
educational experience accessible to our students. More than 6,200 students took advantage of the
academic and extracurricular opportunities at ESU this past year – opportunities made possible in
part by ESU alumni and friends like you.
Your assistance comes at a critical time. Even after inflation is taken into account, today’s
students pay ten times more for tuition than students who first attended the Kansas State Normal
School in 1865. The rising cost of tuition is indicative of the funding challenges universities and
colleges face today. As state fiscal support declines, ESU must find ways to maintain the quality of
education. It is our responsibility to ensure the next generation is prepared to govern, teach, lead and
contribute to the future. Tuition increases have helped, but our students should not shoulder the
burden alone.
Every year, students tell me they chose to attend ESU because we offered them scholarships.
Scholarships are an important tool in recruiting and retaining students. Yet the highly successful
Presidential Academic Awards scholarship program is primarily supported through an annual spring
drive. You can imagine how intensely we watch the gifts coming in each spring to ensure we have
adequate funding for the fall!
Scholarships are the key building blocks upon which the success of our students and our
university rest. During the next few years, our goal is to endow the Presidential Academic Awards
scholarship program as well as raise funds for other programs that will recognize academic
achievement, leadership, and athletic and artistic talent. Thanks to you, we are already on our way to
accomplishing this goal.

The primary purpose of the Foundation is to promote the development and welfare of ESU and the
education and welfare of its students, faculty and alumni. Moreover, the Foundation was created to
provide for the improvement and development of the capabilities of the individual.
It is not just the wealthy who can make a difference by taking part in Foundation activities under
the banner of University Advancement. Smaller gifts over time can and do make a large difference
in the number of ESU students and faculty the Foundation programs are able to reach. If a new
graduate were to give $100 during the first year he or she is employed, and then increased that gift
by $100 per year, by the tenth year he or she will have contributed $5,500. If all 800 members of
his or her graduating class were to do the same, by the tenth year that class will have contributed
$4.4 million and the annual earnings on those contributions will fund more than 100 student
scholarships.
If the Foundation is to meet its goals, it is essential that the alumni and friends of the university
give of their time and talents, as well as their money. Consider the other contributions you can
make. Maybe you could help plan an ESU or Foundation event in your hometown or simply attend
an event and “talk-up” ESU and the Foundation. You can always help by advising ESU’s admissions
office of a talented high school student in your neighborhood who might be interested in learning
more about the opportunities ESU has to offer.
Consider the gift of leadership. The ESU Foundation Board of Trustees recognizes that ESU
alumni and friends possess a variety of talents and skills and, therefore, strives to identify a new class
of Trustees each year such that the Trustees will bring diverse backgrounds and special talents and
abilities to the Foundation and ESU. Trustees are regular contributors who support the growth and
development of the Foundation and university and take an active role in the Foundation governance.
They are also generous role models for others and typically contribute enthusiasm, knowledge,
intelligence and expertise to the programs and projects of the Foundation.
I hope you will consider what you can do for Emporia State University through your active
participation in the programs and activities of the ESU Foundation.

Fiscal Year 2004 could be called the “Year of the Corky.” At
Homecoming, community members unveiled ten decorated life-sized
fiberglass Corkys for the first annual Corkys on Parade. Corky hit the
road when Kansas began producing the official ESU Corky license plate.
A Corkys on Parade Gala and Auction was held, and the limited edition
bronze Corky maquette was introduced. A bronze statue of Corky was
installed in front of Plumb Hall.
Our 71-year-old mascot has done more than inspire fun. This year’s
Corkys have celebrated tradition and the pride alumni and friends
take in Emporia State University. These Corkys also demonstrate the
community’s strong support for ESU students. Each of these projects
– the parade, the maquettes, the Corky license plates – raises funds for
the Presidential Academic Awards scholarship program.
This year, the ESU Foundation awarded scholarships to one-third of
our students. This was possible only because of the generosity of ESU
alumni and friends. More than $3.6 million was raised during Fiscal
Year 2004, and the number of alumni and friends who are giving has
reached a five-year high. As a result, the market value of the Foundation’s
total assets has grown to more than $50 million. You have demonstrated
to students how much they are valued and how strongly we believe
in making a quality education accessible to them. I am proud to be a
Hornet. Thank you.

MS 1952) came to ESU on the G.I. Bill and found
his niche in biology. After teaching a freshman
biology laboratory, he knew he was hooked.
Ratzlaff completed his Ph.D. in limnology at the
University of Kansas and made his home at
Millersville University in Pennsylvania, where he
served as a faculty member until he retired in
1988. He has established the Ratzlaff Research
Fund to honor the impact ESU has had on his life
as well as help students interested in ecological
and organismal research by providing funding for
supplies, travel, publications and other expenses.

Brothers Lewis and Ernest BrAun have tremendous respect for public education. Their father taught while
still in Germany, as did several of their older siblings here in America. The World War II Navy veterans still
farm their land, have proven to be brilliant investors and have generously shared their wealth to help students
pursue their education. The BrAun brothers created the Lewis J. and Ernest A. BrAun Scholarship Fund at
Emporia State University to support students interested in education, nursing, or pre-medicine.
It began several years ago when a group of friends got together at a barbecue to share ESU memories.
Today, the Emporia Connection is an official alumni chapter working to strengthen ties between
African American alumni, current and prospective students, and the university. Coordinated by Mark
(BA 1975) and Patricia (White) Sevier (FS), the Emporia Connection includes six decades of KSTC,
EKSC, and ESU alumni who live on both coasts and everywhere in between. This dynamic alumni
chapter is building a powerful connection with the next generation of African American Hornets by
establishing a scholarship.
Nettie (Hartman) McPheeters (TC 1932, LC 1936) taught at several one-room schoolhouses in Western Kansas
until she married Wayne McPheeters in 1941. Though married women weren’t allowed to teach in public
schools in those days, she continued to work with children through Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.
McPheeters remembered struggling financially through school and wanted to help others.
McPheeters died in 2003. Her legacy and love for teaching will live on in the form of the
Nettie (Hartman) McPheeters Education Scholarship Fund for elementary education majors
from Western Kansas.
John Carlson loved three things: math, teaching and ESU. His aunt,
wife and son are all ESU alumni. Carlson himself joined ESU’s math
department in 1970 as an instructor, and rose to division chair
of mathematical and physical sciences by the time he left in 1988.
Career opportunities took him to South Dakota, but his heart was
still in Emporia. Graduate student funding is one of the keys to a
strong mathematics program. The family hopes to keep Carlson’s
memory and love for mathematics alive and growing by awarding
The John W. Carlson Graduate Award in Mathematics to students
pursuing master’s degrees in mathematics.
When you had such a terrific experience in school, you want to share that experience with everyone in your
community. Such is the case with Jaime (Alter) Chase (BS 1933, MS 1937), a lifelong resident of Eureka, Kansas.
Chase taught until she married in 1939, and her students still remember her as being an excellent teacher.
She wanted to share her love for ESU with future generations of Greenwood County residents. Chase died
in 2003. Her interest in education will live on through the creation of the Jaime E. Chase Scholarship Fund for
outstanding students from Greenwood County.
Andrea Mock, a sophomore psychology major, is a recipient of a scholarship for Greenwood County high school graduates.
The opportunity to take part in extracurricular as well as academic
experiences are key to a well-rounded education.To help support
talented student-athletes who compete in varsity athletics, five new
scholarship funds have been established. The Troy Derley Scholarship
Fund and Charlie Rogers Track & Field Scholarship Fund support
student-athletes passionate about track and field.The Earl “Shorty” and
Lavergn Bastin Scholarship supports women’s basketball players. Men’s
basketball players will benefit from the Chuck W. and Doris A. Hanna
Endowed Men’s Basketball Scholarship. The Avis Jacob Memorial
Fund will provide athletics scholarships in honor of Avis Jacob,
an ESU alumna and former staff member.

Corky the Hornet, created by Paul Edwards (BSE 1937), has been a
part of ESU since 1933. Now, you can have Corky in your home or
office.
ESU alumnus John Forsythe has created miniature bronze
replicas of Edwards’ carved walnut Corky. The nine-inch tall
maquettes are cast in silica bronze using the “lost wax method”
to ensure the highest levels of detail and quality. Each of the 100
numbered bronzes is mounted on a cherry and enameled wood base.
As an ESU alumna, alumnus or fine art collector, you will want
one of the limited-edition bronze maquettes for your collection.
The most prized and limited production numbers in the series, one
through ten and ninety through one hundred, are $500. Numbers
eleven through eighty-nine are just $350 each.
By purchasing a Corky maquette, you’re not only acquiring a
valuable ESU collectible, but also ensuring that scholarships will be
available to another generation of Hornets. All proceeds will benefit
the Presidential Academic Awards scholarship program, a vital tool in
recruiting outstanding new freshmen and transfer students.
