U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION GRANT
SUPPORTS OUTREACH PROGRAMS
keystone of Tilles Center’s Arts
Education program is the School
Partnership, modeled on the highly
acclaimed aesthetic education program at Lincoln Center. Now in its
tenth year, the Partnership is a comprehensive approach to teaching
and learning about the arts, applicable to all grade levels and academic
disciplines. Teaching artists and
teachers work together to plan and
design projects which encourage

students to explore their own artistic capabilities and gain insights into
the creative process. Attendance at
professional performances at Tilles
Center and viewing art works at
museums is combined with experiential in-school workshops. Through
classroom
activities,
students
strengthen essential skills, including
abstract thinking, teamwork, critical
judgment and problem solving.

The goal of the grant is to foster 21st-century skills
for teachers and students by encouraging creativity and collaboration utilizing the arts in all areas of
teaching and learning.

Suffolk Board of Cooperative Educational
Services (BOCES) has been awarded a four-year U.S.
Department of Education Arts in Education Model
Development and Dissemination Program grant,
“Creative Classroom Collaboratives.” In partnership
with Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, Eastern
Suffolk BOCES will bring the program and residencies to grades 2-4, and their classroom and specialty
teachers in two Long Island school districts. The
program is linked to the New York State and national
learning standards.
RESIDENCY PROGRAMS FUNDED BY THE GILBERT AND
ROSE TILLES ENDOWMENT FOR ARTS EDUCATION
WORKING TOGETHER
Thanks to the generous support of the Gilbert and Rose Tilles Endowment for Arts
Education, C.W.
Post residency programs benefit from
the many worldclass artists who
perform at Tilles
Center each year.
For the 2010-11 season many exciting Shanghai Quartet Master Class
residency programs provide unique opportunities for C.W. Post
students to learn new techniques as well as offer them insights into
the world of professional performance.
In October, the New York Philharmonic worked with C.W. Post’s
Orchestra, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble. The residency
included sectional rehearsals with members of the orchestra, attendance at an open rehearsal at Avery Fisher Hall and the New York
Philharmonic performance at Tilles Center.
In November,
The Shanghai
Quartet coached
students
in
master classes
and ensembles.
Hailed as “a
foursome of uncommon refinement and musiPaul Taylor Dance Company Master Class
cal distinction”,
the Shanghai Quartet has earned a reputation as one of the world’s
most outstanding string quartets.

Members of the world-renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra,
who are dedicated to inspiring and growing audiences for jazz, offered master classes with C.W. Post Professor T.K. Blue and the
C.W. Post Jazz Ensemble. A second residency program targeted
the East Meadow High School Jazz Ensemble and the Long Island
High School for the Arts Jazz Band. A fun, interactive concert entitled What is New Orleans
Jazz? introduced students in
grades 2-12 to the language
and sounds of New Orleans
Jazz. These programs took
place in conjunction with
Tilles Center’s Gala 30 performance by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra .
As the recipient of a Congressionally-directed grant, Long Island
University’s C.W. Post Campus has implemented the Grow Your
Own Teacher Program. The program is designed to accelerate a
college education for a cohort of academically talented and diverse
11th graders from underserved areas on Long Island and support
them in the goal to become mathematics or science teachers in
predominately high needs, local school districts. Dr. Estelle Kamler, Project Director of the program and associate professor in the
Department of Educational Leadership at the C.W. Post Campus, has partnered with Tilles Center to incorporate the arts into
the program. Students will attend several performances at Tilles
Center. Additionally, Professor Paul Kim will be teaching a yearlong music appreciation course. To complement the curriculum,
students participated in experiential workshops with Tilles Center teaching artist Patti Dunham, and then attended Tilles Center
performances of Patti LuPone and Video Games Live, as well as
pre-performance lectures and discussions.

Five young Long Island musicians were named Tilles Scholars, following a competitive audition process that was held
under the auspices of Tilles Center for the Performing Arts.
Each student received partial financial support to attend the
2010 C.W. Post Chamber Music Festival.
Directed by Dr. Susan Deaver, the festival is an intensive
three-week program that focuses on the study and performance of the standard chamber music repertoire.
The Tilles Scholars program is made possible by the Gilbert
and Rose Tilles Endowment for Arts Education.
STUDENT ART EXHIBITS
The Patrons Lounge of Tilles Center is again transformed into an exciting art gallery. A series of exhibits
are highlighting works by C.W. Post Art Department
students and students from local K–12 schools. The
rotating exhibits, on display through mid-June 2011,
are free and open to the public. Stop in before a show
and take a look!

Center, C.W. Post Continuing Education and the Hutton House Lectures, Pilobolus Institute worked
with students from the School of
Management and the Arts, the Dance
Department, and local high schools
in workshops that utilized movement
as a medium to explore elements of
collaboration, decision-making and
leadership. And in an eight-session
Christine Ebersole
community project, Pilobolus led
participants in creating a piece that was performed at a pre-performance event on February 4.
In the fall, theater and music students participated in a master class
with Christine Ebersole, two-time Tony Award winner. Additional
residency programs include C.W. Post dance students working
with members of the Paul Taylor Dance Company and the Alvin
Ailey American Dance Theater.

TILLES CENTER ARTS EDUCATION
Strega Nona the Musical
Art is not what you see,
but what you make others see.
-Georgia O’Keeffe
Arts Education programs at Tilles Center share these common goals: to allow participants
to experience the performing arts firsthand, and to develop a greater awareness of how the
arts relate to our lives and the world. Professional performances by world-class artists are enhanced by in-school artist workshops and residencies, professional development workshops
for educators, and intensive school partnerships. Students who participate in our programs
range from elementary school through college level. Enriching events are also scheduled for
adult audiences. Our programs encourage self-expression, believing that the arts provide insight into the nature of human experience and are essential to every learner, at every age.
