VIEW FROM THE RECTORY
By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he
rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he
rested from all the work of creating that he had done. Genesis 2:2-3
Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded you. Six
days you shall labour and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your
God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or
female servant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor any foreigner residing in
your towns, so that your male and female servants may rest, as you do. Remember that you
were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand
and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the
Sabbath day. Exodus 20:8-11
The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. He said
to them, ‘Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.’ For many were
coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a
deserted place by themselves. Mark 6:30
We’re fast approaching the time of year when schools are out, summer is here, at least in
theory, and many people are looking forward to holidays, getting away from it all, leaving all
your worries behind, recharging the batteries. So much pressure seems to be loaded onto a
couple of too short weeks in the summer. There isn’t really sufficient time in the break to
make up for the rest of the year. And for many people the thought of rest, of doing nothing
can be almost frightening, we gain our sense of who we are through the work we do and the
goals we reach – through our achievements. We are afraid that sleep and rest will rob us of
the joys of life and work:
“How long will you lie there, O sluggard?
When will you arise from your sleep?
A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest,
and poverty will come upon you like a robber,
and want like an armed man.” Proverbs 6:9-11
And when I wrote in April, I spoke of all the work we are preparing for and that we seek to
achieve with the help of God. It could seem as though that is a battle cry to constant work.
Yet when God created - he then rested. We need to take time to be re-created by spending
time in quiet with God. This is not about sitting back and doing nothing but rather about
finding active rest – spending time being refreshed in our spirits as well as our bodies.
I’m sure we can all find some spaces to “be still and know that I am God” but I confess that it
is one of the things I find hardest in this world – so during the next two months let’s see
what we learn as we allow God to re-create, refresh and renew us so that we are equipped to
serve and to grow together.

St Gregory's Church. – There is a wedding in church at 2pm tomorrow and on Sunday there
will be a BCP Holy Communion at 8am followed by the 9.30am parish communion. The service
will be followed by refreshments in the Chantry Hall. There will also be a compline service at
6.30pm. Holy Communion is also celebrated at 8.30am on Monday with a BCP holy communion
at 10am on Thursday.
Christian Fellowship. – There will be a Gospel service in the Chantry Hall on Sunday between
3-4.30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

the Chantry Hall. This will be followed at 1pm by the baptism of Rowan Moore conducted by
the Rev Stewart Shaw Padre RAF Leeming. Evening Prayer will be at 6.30pm on Sunday. Holy

Thursday.

Mothers’ Union. - The next meeting is on Monday when Elizabeth Blackwell will be speaking.
Elizabeth looks after MU enterprises and she will have her stall of goodies for sale. In
addition on July 23 there is another members evening at Leeming Lodge. The annual church
visit is on August 10 when we are to visit St Andrew’s Church at Aysgarth. Details will be
confirmed nearer the time.
Town Council. - The town council meeting takes place in the drawing room of Bedale Hall on
Monday at 7.30pm.

AMUSING STORY
A minister told his congregation, "Next week I plan to preach about the sin of lying. To
help you understand my sermon, I want you all to read Mark 17."
The following Sunday, as he prepared to deliver his sermon, the minister asked for a show of
hands. He wanted to know how many had read Mark 17. Several hands went up. The minister
smiled and said, "Mark has only sixteen chapters. I will now proceed with my sermon on

MOTHERS’ UNION
The MU in the not so new Diocese, is taking shape. Our Diocesan president from 2016 is Jean
Thurman, our episcopal area trustee Nicky Holliday and our president is Josie Barley. Josie is
already booked for 2016. In fact, next year’s programme is taking shape.
Our next meeting is on July 13 when Elizabeth Blackwell will be with us. Elizabeth looks after
MU enterprises and she will have her stall of goodies for sale. In addition on July 23 there is
another members evening at Leeming Lodge. The annual church visit is on August 10 when we
are to visit St Andrew’s Church at Aysgarth. Details will be confirmed nearer the time.
The branch very much enjoyed Stewart Ridley’s insights into hospital chaplaincy for which
your prayers are much appreciated. Meanwhile we are looking forward to visiting our partner
branch in Wythar in Leeds.
As ever your support and encouragement are much appreciated as we continue to seek ways to
fulfil the MU core purpose of Christian care for families.

FROM THE EDITORS
As I write this I am nursing sore legs after our 146 mile sponsored bicycle ride from London
to Amsterdam in the Football League annual event to raise money for Prostate Cancer. We
lost a very dear friend to this illness last year and along with his son and others including
Simon Grayson, the manager of newly promoted Preston North End, we completed the arduous
ride raising £41,066 in the process plus an additional 25% in gift aid and this figure keeps
going up as more donations come in. David Garbett, the son of the late Steve Garbett actually
raised the most money by an individual of just over £4,030 and our team came second behind
Ipswich Town whose team of 70 riders raised £55,000. I was amazed to have raised
£1,169.67 myself. The first day of the ride was quite arduous riding from central London
through the leafy Essex countryside (very hilly) on the hottest day of the year but the 60
miles in Holland on flat, cycle routes with the wind behind us was brilliant. At the finish line
we were quite emotional with lots of hugs and tears at a job well done and our fond memories
of a very dear friend.
By the time you read this magazine, the bumper double-issue, before we resume in
September, Lynne and I will be gearing up for the wedding of our son Jonathan to his
beautiful fiancé Jessica here in St Gregory’s on Friday July 10 at 12.30pm. It will be the
proudest day of our lives and then it will all be repeated on Saturday April 1, 2017 here in St
Gregory’s when daughter Sarah marries her fiancé Michael. We are saving up already. We
wish you all a happy and peaceful summer holiday.

Charity CD. – David Hewison has produced a CD which is on sale for £5 from Aunt Sally’s and
Food Weighhouse in Bedale called Freeway No 1 in aid of the Friarage Hospital orthopedic
department. David had two hip replacements in 2012 and 2013 and had it not been for the
care he received from the Glebe House Surgery and the hospital, he would now be in a
wheelchair. David is hoping to raise £1,000.
Prostate Cancer Charity Cycle Ride Five members of Bedale FC completed the 2-day, 146
mile Football League London to Amsterdam sponsored bicycle ride in aid of Prostate Cancer.
The ride was in memory of a dear friend of the football club, Steve Garbett who died last
year from Prostate Cancer after a 10 year battle. They were joined on the ride by Preston
North End manager and ex Bedale High School pupil Simon Grayson, Steve’s son David
Garbett and 5 of his friends from Leeds making up a team, of 12 called Team Garbett. Simon
was involved in a lot of fund-raising through his football contacts and he held a celebrity
football game at the R&R Ice Cream Stadium in March. Team Ipswich Town raised a massive
£55k from 70 riders closely followed by the 12 Team Garbett riders who to date, have raised
an incredible £40,025.83 plus an additional 25% in gift aid. Team leader David Garbett who
received the orange jersey from the organisers for raising the most money by an individual of
just over £4k said ‘this was a very emotional weekend for me but the support I received,
especially from Simon Grayson and Preston North End and my close friends, was truly
magnificent. My dad would be so proud of all our efforts and would be chuckling to himself
looking down on how challenging we all found the ride.’ The whole event is expected to raise

Bedale High School’s HMS Heroes Commemorate VE Day
On Friday May 8, 14 students from Bedale High School took tea to the residents of Benkhill
Lodge Residential Home which gave them the opportunity to talk about VE Day with people
who were actually there. Cpl Mike Charman, a serving soldier and historical interpreter also
attended wearing WW2 uniform with replica newspapers of events from 70 years ago.
Several of the residents are over 100 and each had written a paragraph about their
experiences. One of the residents, Doreen was in the RAF for 5 years as a flight mechanic
working on bombers and Lancaster bombers. She met her husband, a mid-upper gunner in the
forces and they went on leave to get married. The students were deeply enthralled by the
accounts of WW2 and VE Day in particular. Four Y7 students accompanied my Mrs Gill Hoile
attended St Gregory's Church last Wednesday lunchtime to celebrate the lives of those
given in WW1 and the surrounding areas. There were representatives from Crakehall Primary
School, Bedale Primary School and RAF Leeming Primary School. Wooden crosses were placed
in a sand tray to remember those who gave their lives and the primary children also wore
sashes with the names of the fallen soldiers written on them. Some of the primary school
students said prayers and Abby Wilkinson Y7 read from Matthew 5 ‘The Sermon on the
Mount.’

presentation assembly at Bedale High School with trophies awarded in their memory. The
Richard Blanchard Cup for basketball was awarded to Connor McDonald, the Richard
Blanchard Cup for rugby was awarded to Matthew Taylor, the Danny Davies cup for
improvement in football went to Toby Cerrato, the Jonny Miles cup for effort went to
Christopher Armstrong and the Becky Robinson cup for effort went to Hannah Bowe.

Aysgarth School is delighted to announce that four of its 1213 year olds have won awards to their chosen senior schools.
Christian Totty was awarded a scholarship to Uppingham
after convincing them of his sporting prowess. He has a
number of accolades under his belt at Aysgarth including top
try scorer for the 1st XV, captain of swimming and member
of the 1st XI football and 2nd XI cricket. Barnard Castle
recognised George Southall’s sports where he has excelled in
the school from playing prop for the 1st XV, a valuable
member of the 1st XI football team and also 2nd XI cricket.
Alex Bowman put on an impressive display for Shrewsbury
School to award him a Design & Technology exhibition and
Cheltenham College recognised Theo Kace as an all-rounder
by awarding him an exhibition for Art, Music, Drama and
Sport.
Adrian Grayson received an award from Dickie Bird OBE at Headingly before the test match
against New Zealand for his 51 year service to schools cricket.
BEDALE REALLY HAS GONE BIKE CRAZY
On the same day that the football club were cycling between England and Holland, father and
son team, Martin and Steve Revis, along with 11 friends were taking part in the 140 mile
Whitehaven to Sunderland Coast to Coast cycle ride with 5,000 metres (16,000 feet) of
ascent to raise funds for Yorkshire Cancer Research in memory of Christopher Revis who
died from skin cancer in 2011. These two charity rides were preceded the weekend before by
a group of 60 pupils and staff from the high school embarking on their annual Coast to Coast
3-day cycle ride. Setting off from Morecambe way with pebbles in pocket, the groups
ascended over 1,500 metres before a fish and chip supper and overnight camp at
Appletreewick campsite. Day 2 saw spectacular views over the Vale of Pickering and the
North York Moors with the final day through Dalby Forest before the two mile procession
into Scarborough’s North Bay where they were greeted by parents and friends. This is the
7th time Bedale High School has taken on the Coast to Coast challenge led by teacher Mark
Sellers and it the aim is to remove all the pebbles from the west coast and deposit them in
God’s Own Country.
On Friday June 5, Bedale Primary School held a French Breakfast to raise money for the
Friends of Mettupalayam charity, a community project in rural India that the school and its
staff have supported over the years. As well as helping improve French language skills, the
breakfast raised over £120 for the charity. Thank you to everyone who helped, including
Bedale Tesco Express who kindly provided many of the refreshments on offer.
Joely Newell, a Y8 pupil at Bedale High school has undertaken the longest bike ride she has
ever completed in one day to raise money for charity. With the support of her dad, Steve
Newell they started out in Ripon and headed towards Easingwold, through the Howardian hills
and on to Malton, eventually finishing in Bridlington, a total distance of 72 miles. The whole
journey took seven and a half hours including short breaks for food and drink. Joely set
herself a goal this year of raising money for a charity and chose Operation Smile UK. She
chose to raise funds for Operation Smile UK who are a children’s medical charity. They
provide free reconstructive surgery for children and young adults born with facial
deformities, predominately cleft lips and cleft palates. Joely has a cousin who was born with a
cleft palate which was why she chose to support this charity. In addition she plans to raise
further monies by selling items donated by friends and family at her local car boot sale. Her
sponsorship so far will exceed £500 and will be matched pound for pound by Barclays Bank.
Charity golf. – There will be a charity golf day at Bedale Golf Club on Monday July 20
involving a Stableford competition ¾ handicap in teams of four with the best two scores to
count, and trophies and prizes for the longest drive and nearest the pin. Companies are

Book and Postcard Fair. – This bi-annual event will be held in Bedale Hall on Sunday October
11 between 10am-3.45pm with admission costing £1 for adults and children under 14 free.
There will be rare antiquarian, interesting and unusual books for sale as well as a vast number
of old postcards bought and sold and home-made refreshments are available all day. For more

Brass band. – The Bedale Brass Band will be performing at an outdoor service on Sunday at
Crakehall, at Snape for the annual show on Monday August 31, at Great Smeaton for the
Smeaton Feast on Sunday September 13, in the market place for the Christmas tree lights
switch-on on Saturday November 28 and at Middleham church for a carol concert on Friday
December 18. There will also be a collection at Catterick Racecourse on Sunday September
20 and the car boot sale in the park on Saturday October 3.
Forthcoming gig. – In association with the Hemelvaart Café, Skinny Living will be appearing
live at the Chantry Hall on Saturday July 17 at 7pm. Tickets cost £12 and all profits will go to
St Gregory's Church. Skinny Living is a new band based in Wakefield and is a pleasant blend
of vocalists, songwriters and musicians with different musical backgrounds and influences.

Walking for health. – There is a 1 hour walk from the leisure centre on some Thursdays at
10.15am for a 10.30am start organised by the Hambleton Strollers. The walk is usually over
flat land with a leader and finishes back at the centre with a cup of coffee. The group are on
expanding their walks, which are all flat ground, risk assessed and volunteer leader supported,

Knit and Natter. - Come along for a coffee with others who enjoy knitting to the Golden
Tortoise in Sussex Street, Bedale from 1pm on Thursday. If interested, speak to Janet.
Dance orchestra. - Bring a chair and picnic to the grounds of Thorp Perrow Arboretum on
Saturday July 18 for 7.30pm. The performance by the Mr Swing Dance Orchestra will
feature the sounds of Frank Sinatra, Harry Connick jnr and Tom Jones. This is a ticket only

Postage Stamps. - an appeal is made for supporters of the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity to
save used stamps and leave them in the box at the back of St Gregory’s Church or post them
through the tourist information centre letter box.
Volunteers. - Dales-Care is looking for additional volunteers to complement and work alongside
its current team. This could involve working in the day centre, helping in the kitchen or
delivering meals on wheels. If anyone has a few hours to spare and would be interested in

Community Forum. - The Bedale and villages community forum will meet in Bedale Hall at
7.30pm on Thursday July 16. This is a community partnership which will exist to facilitate the
improvement and regeneration of Bedale and its surrounding villages. Future meetings will be
held on, Thursday September 17 (AGM) and Thursday November 19.

THE ASSUMPTION OF MARY
On the feast of Mary we celebrate a special favour that God gave to Mary, our Mother. The
Assumption means that Mary was taken up into the glory of heaven not only with her soul, but
also with her body and is celebrated on August 15 every year. Jesus, the Son of God was born
from Mary's pure womb. So when Mary died, God the Father and Jesus, would not let the
body of the Mother of God be spoilt. This was her reward for her love of God and her years
of faithful prayers and suffering.
Now Mary is in heaven. She is queen of heaven and earth. She is the Mother of Jesus' Church
and queen of apostles. Every time Mary asks Jesus to give us graces, he listens to her
request. After the resurrection from the dead, we, too, can go to heaven with our bodies. Our
bodies will be perfect. They will not suffer illness anymore. They will not need any more food
and drink to keep alive. They will be beautiful and splendid. If we use our bodies now to do
good, those bodies will share in our heavenly reward. As we celebrate the feast day of Mary,
we can ask our Blessed Mother Mary to guide, protect and care for us.
MY LIFE AT ST GREGORY’S
My Mother decided that I join the St Gregory’s Church Choir. I am now beginning my 71st
year as a member of the choir and I would like to think of the Church as my second home. So
at the age of 8, I began a journey that I have really enjoyed, and these are a few of the
things that have happened during that time. When I started my long stint in the choir we had
18 boys and 9 men. The choir master was Stanley Megson, or Uncle Stan as he was known to
everyone. In those days the boys received points, 1 per service and 3 if you attended the
morning and evensong services. Then, at the year, we received a penny for each of the
points we had received. In those days it was Matins and evensong every week. On the first
Sunday we had a Communion Service at 9am, sang to the settings of Merbecke, then Matins
at 11am, evensong was at 6-30 pm. We had to arrive early to have a run through the chants
for the Psalm, Venity, Te-Deum and Benedictus and sang to the Hymn tunes. On
Ascension Day the boys had to go up the church tower and sing Hail The Day That Sees Him
Rise. Tom Attwood, the church verger rang the 6-55am curfew bell but not that morning, he
also rang it at 5-55pm every night. This was followed with a procession up to the “Observer
Post” situated behind Willow Drive in Aiskew. It is not there now. We got there at the
bottom of the churchyard over a rickety bridge over the beck and had a short service. Most
Sunday mornings we were entertained by Tommy Thompson (Wanda’s father) who was the
headmaster of Aysgarth School and took a few services at the church. He took me home to
Rand Grange following the service. The Diocese held a choir festival every year, when all the
church choirs in the Diocese met at the cathedral every year and sang a special evensong to
various settings. This was continued after the cathedral services were ceased to exist with a
joint service with the choir of St Mary’s at Richmond under Dr Bull. Then Uncle Stan was
called to go to war and Ronnie Waring from Northallerton took over the choir. He was
assisted by Gladys Kettlewell and Mrs Shepherd for quite a few years. The rector at that
time was Harold Hodson, and he was quite a character, a very kind and helpful man. When Mr
Marshal the milkman was ill, Rev Hodson took over the milk round. He liked playing snooker
and was seen at the fire station very regularly but the fireman couldn’t beat him. He always
used the excuse that he had a meeting to go to. He took evensong at Leeming Bar church and
took the firemen with him in his pony and trap. Yes, he was a horsey person and followed the
hounds regularly. He had a wedding once and entered the church, left his horse outside and
came in with his spurs jangling under his cassock. He was rector until 1951 and his successor
John Massingberd-Munday was also in the horse business but he bred horses. Uncle Stan
came back from the war and continued as choirmaster. In 1948 the first changes were
made when we got new choir stalls, as they are today. The old ones were removed and the
choir sat on chairs on soil until the new ones arrived. These arrived with other pieces of
furniture, the pulpit, the altar and reredos in the north aisle, which was originally the High
Altar in the East.
All of these were given by Ethel Milman Procter Beresford Peirse in memory of her family. I
was now getting older and was elevated to the back row now and sang alto with Teddy Kay for
quite a few years and when he died I was on my own. In 1950 the choir were part of the
pageant telling the history of Bedale. Ken Easby played Father Tyme and spent the whole
evening walking with a scythe over his shoulder very slowly from one end to the other. Tom
Plummer then later on Don Fraser became organist because Uncle Stan had retired by
now and to quote him “Peter, I am not having you singing like a woman. Get down to the other
end and sing bass with Syd Grundy,” a position I still have today. It was about 1970 that
women and girls were introduced, the boy’s voices had broken and no more were joining. At
this time, Andrew and the late Jenny Woodhouse ran the new communicants guild or
pathfinders. They went all over the Deanery and when Andrew either became head or decided
to go into the ministry the pathfinders finished. During this time I was on the Deanery Synod
and Norman McDermid appointed me stewardship adviser a position I held for two years.
During this time, the Queen came to Ripon Cathedral and gave out the Maundy Money and
Anne and I went to the service representing the Deanery. Tom and Nellie Attwood from St
Gregory’s were receiving the money. In 1979, Richard Boyton became organist and still is
playing today. At that time the organ was an Abbot and Smith pipe organ and was renovated in
1975. It continued to cause problems and when Richard went away on holiday, the organ
almost packed up, but on his return he got the organ to function once again. Richard and I
decided rather than spend £75,000 on restoring it once again, we could buy a new Makin
organ for £18,000. After many letters to the DAC, we won our case and in 1985 the present
organ was installed. At that time we helped by Mike Cole who understood Makin organs. The
other changes were the altar rail in the Lady Chapel was replaced, the lights in the church
were changed in the 1990’s, and the bookcase and shelves under the tower were replaced in
memory of Alan Joyce, who sang with me in the choir. I was honoured to be asked to
be churchwarden by Ambrose Hutton-Squire and became the rector’s warden. He appointed
me every year which is why we had three wardens until Simon Rudkin decided to abide by the
rules and no one can hold that position for more than 6 years. I had to retire but was elected
after two years. I was really upset when I found out in March this year that, after some 38
years’ service, I was not re-elected. I suppose it was time to go, but I would have liked to
have done another year, then retire gracefully.
I would like to thank everybody who I have worked with over the years and will continue to
keep a close eye on the future of St Gregory’s.

FAREWELL D&S TIMES
The pressure on regional newspapers must be immense with shrinking advertising revenue and
alternative ways for Joe Public to access the news. The Darlington and Stockton Times has
been reduced over time to about 3 editions to cover the whole region and it has relied on the
goodwill of a small army of local correspondents to gather news from their towns and villages
to keep that section of the paper alive and in good health.
For this very time-consuming role, the correspondents are paid a pittance. No-one does it for
the money I can assure you but it is a token gesture from the newspaper for a job well done.
Imagine my dismay to receive a letter from the editor informing me that our pittance was to
be reduced by a massive 40%. What profession would accept such a massive and arbitrary
reduction in wages?
Well not this one I am afraid. As the correspondent for Aiskew, Bedale, Burrill, Burneston,
Carthorpe, Crakehall, Exelby, Hackforth, Hornby, Leeming Bar, Leeming Village, Newton-leWillows, Patrick Brompton and Thornton Watlass, the June 26 submission was my last. I have
loved serving these villages to the best of my ability and I can pride myself on getting lots of
good, local news into the town and village section of the D&S Times.
I too however, have been left as exasperated as my many suppliers of photographs and news
stories over recent weeks at the way these have failed to make it to press. I understand the
pressure of space in the newspaper but it is soul-destroying when so much time is put into
creating these local interest stories and then nothing happens. It is a complete and utter
waste of my time to do this if they don’t make the cut. Time for someone else to take up the
mantle.
I am reluctantly bowing out at the top having enjoyed my years as a local correspondent but I
won’t be taken for a mug and unfortunately, I don’t want to be a part of the new regime. I do
thank all my contributors for their support over recent times and I wish the new editor,
deputy editor and reporters the very best for the future success of the D&S Times.
