Duration:2004-2008
Euclid RTP 3.20 project
Probably the largest coordinated R&D effort (9 M€), on SHM systems for
aircrafts and vehicles
Partners (Spain): Airbus, INTA, EADS Military.
Partners (EU): WIWEB, DEMEX, RISOE, PATRIA, VTT, EMMECON, ALENIA,
CIRA, FOKKER, NLR, BAE SYSTEMS, QINETIQ, SF.
Project Objectives: prototype demonstration of modular structural health
monitoring system for military platforms.
Objectives Spain:
- Investigate the behaviour of structures with FBGs bonded or
embedded.
- Test the ability of FBGs and all the measurement system chain to
perform correctly in real flight tests.
- Test the use of sensors to detect stresses and damage.
UPM Responsibilities:
- Provide technical support.
- Manufacture the optical sensors.
- Assist in results interpretation.
- Project coordination Spain

Modifications and improvements in the measurement
chain (sensor characterisation, data acquisition,
development of in flight capability measurement
devices) (UPM).
Characterisation sensor performance in composite
and metallic structures (INTA-EADS-UPM).
Sensor ability to remain functional after curing
process (Airbus-INTA-UPM).
Embedded sensors do not change significantly
structural behaviour (Airbus, INTA).
Very good sensor performance during during flight
trials (EADS-UPM).
Sensors ability to detect structural behaviour
produced by damage (Airbus).

Airbus-UPM
Transversal Stresses Effect
This technique presented is then a
very valuable tool to detect and
evaluate the progression of failure in
bonded lines of composite monolithic
structures.

INTA
Test system to characterize
the behavior of FBGs
embedded in Composite
materials probes.

EADS-CASA
Flight test trials with FBGs were
done by EADS-CASA. UPM
assisted with technical support.
