Elk, also known as
Greenwood was a
lumber port at the turn of
the century. This tiny
community is perched on
the cliffs above the
Pacific overlooking rocky
coves and sandy
beaches. Many find it
very healing here as well
as an ideal place to recreate! Restaurants,
lodging, the healing arts
and the great outdoors
are all present.

QUEENIE’S
ROADHOUSE CAFE
L ynn Derrick,
“Queenie” for short,
loves to cook. Here, in
her cozy cafe by the sea
she prepares gour met
breakfast and lunch from
the freshest or ganic
ingredients she can get
her hands on. “Breakfast
is something I look
forward to anytime of the day”, Queenie states. Dining
is indoors or out - sit down or to go. Guests with clean
and human-friendly dogs are welcome on the open air
front patio with fabulous oceanviews. The eggs, fresh
vegetables, fruit, meats and cheese come from
Mendocino or northern California farms and ranches.
Always organic are the mochas and espressos, fresh
green garden salads and homemade bread. Breakfast is served all day and for
lunch you can savor delicious homemade soup, veggie or 1/3 lb grilled burger,
fresh fish from local fishermen and a variety of gourmet specials served
throughout the week. Mendocino micro-brewed beer, Big River organic coffee,
herb tea and fresh squeezed juice complement your meal. Queenie gets energized
when she is at the cafe and the warrior/chef in her displays boundless energy, a
far side sense of humor and her big heart comes out. There is only one place like
Elk in the world and only one Queenie’s Roadhouse Cafe. Open 8am-3pm,

No matter what the weather, the
day or the mood of the highway, the
oceanview Elk Store (circa 1927)
stays open 363 days of the year
offering freshly brewed or ganic
coffee, snacks and local and organic
Califor nia products. Friendly
proprietress Pat Jelen, who bought
the store in spring 2003, always has tips & advice for locals and tourists alike.
The deli case is stocked with over a dozen each of cheeses, breads and
sandwich meats for a picnic at the beach (and yes, sandwiches are made on the
premises). Premium Mendocino County wines and beers, mineral water, locally
harvested fruit juices and sodas line the cooler shelves. Packaged and bulk fresh
produce (some from local farms) is available year around. Health foods, vitamins,
pet food and shelves of canned and packaged foods await. Across the highway is
Greenwood-Elk State Park and a lofty trail which leads down to the broad sandy
driftwood scattered beach and spectacular Elk Cove.

"We are hesitant to leave the most wondrous little piece of heaven we've
found on this earth. The magic of it is beyond our ability to express."
Another, who has returned year after year wrote: "Thank you for two
wonderful days. The views, solitude and food were unsurpassed. The ocean
provided such constantly beautiful entertainment we rarely strayed from you.
Some moments were spent dreaming of many return visits."
The Cafe offers breakfast, lunch and
dinner to guests. The cuisine is superb,
with the chef creating a myriad of fresh

SANDPIPER HOUSE INN
Nestled among the rugged cliffs
of the Mendocino Coast and overlooking the dramatic ever changing Pacific
Ocean lies the Sandpiper Inn located in the rural coastal village of Elk. A
perrenial garden greets you at the front porch of the inn. Inside you'll find
accommodations furnished with antiques and down comforters to cuddle you
on misty nights.
Ed and Althea Haworth are the innkeepers of this private and romantic
setting built in 1916 by the Goodyear Redwood Company. The inn is located
just a short drive from the village of Mendocino for afternoon shopping and
dining out. Local Mendocino wineries are also nearby for an afternoon of
wine tasting. You may choose to simply enjoy exploring the driftwood strewn
beaches of the area or watch the beauty of the untamable ocean. Upon
returning to the inn in the late afternoon a fire glows in the central hearth.
Homemade cookies and wine are among the many amenities offered for
returning guests. The house boasts spectacular ocean views and a rare
private beach in the cove below.
Accommodations include five unique guest rooms with queen and king
sized beds, private baths, ocean and garden views.
All rooms offer a
fireplace and one has a private deck and another a garden terrace facing the
ocean. Rates of $155 to $260 include a full breakfast and are based on
double occupancy. A two night minimum is required on weekends. The inn
is unable to provide for children or pets and smoking is restricted to the porch
or deck.

When Bill and Cynthia Courtney left the corporate world and moved to Elk
they created a lifestyle and destination by renovating an abandoned ranch.
Two Guest Houses await - the Gardener’s Cottage with “full on ocean view”

Children and adults eyes light up at discovering the farm animals, gardens,

Nighttime a stillness descends on the ranch and it is time to star watch. Hot
tubers and star watchers view owls, bats and ring tailed ferrets at night. Be

NAVARRO RIVER STATE BEACH
For years campers and
recreational vehicle owners
could camp overnight for free
at the broad expanse of beach
to the south of the Navarro
River. Westport Union Landing
State Beach, 30 miles north,
used to be the same way; then
newcomer property owners
overlooking the beach started
to complain about the "freeloaders". Some of those "freeloaders" were working class family men and women who owned homes in Ukiah
and Willits, but worked in the nearby woods or fished and found the long
commute over mountain roads undesirable. Now both beaches have been added
to the inventory of the California State Park System. Improvements mean a use
fee is initiated and only those who can pay get to play on the beach. Navarro
River Beach was the last free access beach on the Mendocino Coast. Access is
acquired at the southwest corner of the forest green Navarro Bridge on Route
One just before it joins Hwy 128. The road is often partially submerged and the
pot holes can be deep.

ALBION RIVER HARBOR,
FLATS CAFE and CAMPGROUND
Beneath the Albion River Bridge on a broad
river valley flat that once was the home of the
first tidal water powered sawmill in California
(circa 1852) is the Albion River Fishing
Village, campground and Flats Cafe. A small
general store and close proximity to the
mouth of Albion River makes the campground a good spot to fish from for ocean
going perch, salmon, big ling cod, abalone, sea urchins and crabs. In the Flats Cafe,
reasonably priced breakfast and lunch of homemade biscuits & gravy, omelettes,
cereal, fresh fish & chips, deli sandwiches and New England clam chowder is served.
Available for big groups and open camping, the fee is usually $22/night for tent
camping, $25 for water & electricity and $28 for full RV hook-ups ($5 day use and
$2 per dog). There are also hot showers and bathrooms. Schooner's Landing is
secluded by steep cliffs and dense ridge top forests. This riverside campground is well
insulated from the flat and its heavy bridge traffic. River side campsites (day use $10,
tent site/$25, RV hook-up $30 and weekly rates from $105)).

HERITAGE HOUSE
The most prominent and famous vacation destination on
the Mendocino Coast is the Heritage House, located just
south of Little River and the town of Mendocino. The history
of Heritage House is colorful. In the late 1800’s San
Francisco beckoned growth and the gold rush brought an
army of eager pioneers to the mountain’s and forests. “Bring
me hardy pioneers the size of mountains,” was a suitable phrase; and they came to
the redwood forests by land and sea. Schooners were loaded with redwood by
cliff’s edge, which was destined to become San Francisco victorians. The coastline
and forests around Heritage House are lined with historic secrets now lost in the
storms and mist of a hundred years, but for displays in a few glass showcases at
Heritage House.
When the Dennen family arrived from the state of
Maine in 1877, they brought with them a love of
the sea and a determination to build new and better
lives. How many of us have arrived to these golden
shores to do the same? And how many of us truly
succeed? In 1949 Lauren and Hazel Dennen
purchased their property and began creating
Mendocino’s first country inn. Over the years
famous Heritage House moments have been shared
with America. Film stars Alan Alda and Ellen
Burstyn brought new meaning to aging gracefully by
arriving as young lovers and retur ning as
grandparents in the film “Same Time Next Year”.
Today sixty six cottages, rooms and suites are
scattered over 37 acres of spectacular gardens along
the rugged Pacific coastline. You’ll share this
dramatic and bold, yet very civilized setting with the
soft gaze of deer, the rainbow blur of hummingbirds
and the social antics of the Muscovy ducks. Guests
are pleased to find that no two rooms are alike. The

LITTLE RIVER INN
It was a dream
come true for Silas and
Margaret Coombs to sail
around the Hor n in the
mid 1800s, leaving their
log cabin in Maine to work
the
woods
around
Mendocino and by 1853
build a rather luxurious
homestead. The Little
River household was
always a haven tired
travelers could look
forward to since the days
when visitors arrived by stagecoach.
Hospitality became a more serious matter
when Cora Coombs and Ole Hervilla were married
and the spacious parlors became lobbies and dining
rooms. Eventually the pastures and orchards were
transformed into a beautiful 9-hole golf course overlooking the breakers of Van Damme
Cove. Sunny pictures of Ole picking fresh abalone for that night's dinner hang in the bar as a
reminder of the bountiful past. Today, Cora and Ole's children Danny Hervilla and Susan
McKinney; the inn's fourth generation, continue the tradition of family hospitality.
Remodeling of rooms is done with the confidence of longtime owners so improvements don't
detract from the historic feel of the place.
There is quite a selection of accommodations to choose from at Little River Inn. In the
historic Inn (circa 1853) are Victorian rooms with commanding views overlooking Van
Damme Cove with its surf-tossed rock outcroppings. To the north, nestled into the hillside,
are two-story rooms that open out onto spacious balcony walk-ways with sweeping ocean
views. To the south, amid the meandering gardens, are a variety of units, each with a
commanding view of the seascape, a cozy woodburning fireplace, and some have a twoperson luxury tub. The oceanside units on the Van Damme House and Mallory House
properties offer the most tranquil respite. These luxury units look out over the bluffs to
coves and crashing waves, with fireplaces to warm the soul after a luxurious dip in the hot
tub on the deck. Massages or body treatments are on-site at Third Court Salon & Day Spa.
How does a round of golf followed by a feast of charbroiled steak sound? Golfers are
delighted and frustrated by the myriad of ponds and walls of trees which teem with fish and
wildlife. It is not uncommon to have to shoo a resident deer from the tee box. Or one can
bicycle, run or jog in the redwood canopied forest of neighboring Van Damme State Park.
The dining room is superb! Using the freshest products from the bounty of Mendocino
county, seafood from Noyo Harbor and vegetables harvested from local gardens, Chef Silver
Canul celebrates traditional American cuisine with a cooking style that reflects the distinctive
flavors of his Mayan heritage. Served in a garden setting, the dining room menu is a la carte
so that guests can choose from the savory selection of starters, salads and entrees. Ole’s
Whale Watch Bar, open nightly, serves cocktails and a bar menu worthy of the panoramic
ocean view. Room service is offered from both the dining room and bar.
Here you are surrounded by the lush greens of gardens and forest, the clear blue sky and
the aquamarine hues of the cove and open sea. Little River Inn has been lauded for its
exceptional hospitality for four generations!

Proprietors Joan and Jeff Stanford know how important convenience is to weary
travelers and have carefully engineered such an environment into their lodge at
Mendocino. So relax, your worries are over as soon as you book in at Stanford Inn by
the Sea - Big River Lodge. Special workshops and off-season packages are available.
Animal lovers, vegetarians and retreat leaders become addicted to good health at
Stanford Inn by the Sea.
The lodge is majestically set back on a hillside just off Route 1. Surrounded on 3
sides by thick forest, it commands sweeping views of the moody Pacific and the
Victorian Village of Mendocino. Just a stone's throw to the north, the Big River empties
fresh water into the temperamental Mendocino Bay. The daily drama of strong river
current, tidal action and at times huge waves constantly resculpts the sandy beaches.
Mother Nature's ongoing aquatic ballet is visible from the large picture windows of your
room. Memories of moments spent in front of the crackling fireplace while sipping
complimentary wine and gazing at the rocky headlands and ever changing beaches
linger long indeed. Each room is tastefully decorated with colorful comforters, four
poster feather beds, and an array of unique antique furnishings and fixtures. All have
private baths, televisions, VCR's, coffee makers, telephones, sundecks and toasty
fireplaces (from $265/2). A wonderful champagne breakfast is served the next
morning with organic produce from the inn's certified organic gardens.
The vegan and vegetarian cuisine at Raven’s Restaurant is superb. The menu
includes dishes from waffles and eggs portabella to vegan specialties. Dinners are a
festive affair featuring dishes such as tofu & wild mushroom Wellington, seapalm strudel
and ricotta tart. The wine list features wines made from organically grown grapes.
If you are lucky you may spot deer gently grazing in the meadows or beneath the
apple trees. Ducks, geese or koots glide over the mirrored surface of the fresh water
trout pond; depending on what season it is. Llamas also graze the meadow and you
can canoe Big River Estuary with the tides. Guests love the fact that the woods are
literally at their doorstep. The sea terrace upon which the lodge was built has several
unusual micro-climates and soil conditions which are conducive to growing a large
variety of flowers and vegetation. The lodge is surrounded by thick forests of fern,
California grand fir, bull pine, redwood and cypress. Jeff has extensively landscaping
the grounds. Jeff and Joan know how special the environment is at their exceptional
lodge. They invite you to personally experience this gentle setting in the rugged Pacific
