Veteran's Day
Program
This year the Laurens-Marathon
Community will celebrate
Veteran's Day with a focus
on Military Music. We are
pleased to have National Guard
First Sergeant Don Samuelson
as our guest speaker. First
Sergeant Samuelson is a former
Commander of the 34th Army
Band. We are pleased and excited
to have him as our guest speaker.
Everyone is invited to attend.
The program will be Monday,
November 11, and it starts at
10:00 A.M. in the LaurensMarathon School old gym. The
Laurens-Marathon band and vocal
will also participate.
DONALD E. SAMUELSON,
ENLISTED BANDLEADER
First Sergeant Samuelson was born
and raised in Fairfield, Iowa, and
graduated from Fairfield High
Biggest Little Paper In Town!
School in 1960. Upon graduation
he enlisted in the 34th Division
Band, Iowa National Guard. After
returning from Basic and Advanced
Infantry training at Ft. Leonard
Wood and Ft. Dix, he attended
Parsons College, graduating in
1964 with a Bachelor's degree in
Business Administration. Upon
graduation from college, he
entered the automobile business
and remained in that occupation,
owning his own dealership for
fourteen years, until retirement in
2006. In June of 1964, he married
Jeanne Tracy; they have two
children, Michael and Beth and
one grand daughter; Maggie Bice.
Upon retirement, Don & Jeanne
moved to Ankeny, IA.
The First Sergeant's military
career has taken
him through all the
noncommissioned officers
educational courses (honor
graduate at the Advanced
Course) including
graduating from the United
States Army Sergeants
Major Academy in July 1995.
His career spanned 42 1/2 years
and from 1992 - 1995, he served
as Commander of the 34th Army
Band. During this period, the
Band successfully deployed to
the country of Greece to support
the United States Embassy. He
was appointed First Sergeant of
the 34th Army Band 1997 and
served in that capacity until his
military retirement in 2002.
Since retirement from the
active service, he has been a
member of the Iowa Military
Veterans Band, serving as
secretary from 2006-2013. He
also continues to serve in the
Honor Guard out of Camp
Dodge, Iowa as a bugler at
ceremonial events and funerals.

Johnson Attends Ronald Reagan Commemorative Dinner
Connor Johnson attended the Annual Ronald Reagan Commemorative Dinner at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines on
Friday, October 25th.

School. Simpson College, located in beautiful Indianola, just south of DesMoines, Iowa, is a four-year liberal arts college,
offering undergraduate courses with over 81 major and minor degrees from which to choose.

Ava Long Attends Oakland
Raiders-Pittsburg Steelers
Game
Ava M. Long and her grandfather Emmit Pfost attended
the Oakland Raiders/Pittsburgh Steelers NFL football game
recently.
Ava received the royal treatment from the Raiders. They
received tickets to be on the playing field before the game.
Ava received an NFL football from Sebastian Janikowski,
friend of her father and Raiders kicker for the past 14 years.
Rich Gannon, former Raiders quarterback who now works
for the NFL, invited Ava to the NFL radio booth.
Ava’s father, Craig Long, worked for the Oakland Raiders
for 8 years as Public Relations Manager. They had excellent
seats as they were in the Raiders section with the coaches and
players’ wives and friends.
The Oakland Raiders beat the Steelers 21-18! Ava was
amazed at all the cars and people at the game. She had a
wonderful time.

Students Participate in College Application Day
The Laurens-Marathon College Application Day was a success for our Seniors
who are planning on attending a post-secondary institution after they graduate.
We had over 20 college applications completed on Tuesday by our Senior class.
Some students had already completed applications and just made requests to
have transcripts sent to the schools that they applied to. We appreciated the
help from Ryan, an admissions representative from Iowa Central, who spent
the morning helping students complete applications, as well as the many local
colleges who donated prizes for our students. We are hoping this will become
an annual event for our seniors, and to continue building relationships with
local colleges and businesses.

Library!
Approximately 137 well costumed
people enjoyed the Magic of Larry
Dunbar at the Laurens Public Library
on Halloween night. This is the
tenth year he has totally enchanted
our patrons as he does tricks ranging
from card tricks to sawing a girl in
half!

When magician Larry Dunbar arrived at the Library the other night, he informed me that this was the 10th year in a
row that he had been here for Halloween. Time flies! I’m pleased to report that attendance was amazing yet again – our best
count is 137 (you know how hard it is to get a count on those little monsters?) The kids were totally enthralled as they tried
to figure out just how he was doing all those things! As he was packing up his bags of tricks, I asked him to please put us on
his calendar for next year so we can continue this great tradition.
Jean Kyle enjoyed reading Christian fiction books, so when we got some memorials for her, we completed our Karen
Kingsbury collection in her memory. Donors to this collection are Ron & Pat Harms, Jeanette Korrect, Deb Hertz, The
Stitchers and the Kyle family. In addition to those, we also received the following novels: Winners by Danielle Steel (CD
Book too!), Accused by Lisa Scottoline, A Nantucket Christmas by Nancy Thayer (our resident Christmas book fanatic says
this is one of the best ones she’s read this year!) and Candlelight Christmas by Susan Wiggs. In nonfiction we received The
Pioneer Woman Cooks : a year of holidays : 140 step-by-step recipes for simple, scrumptious celebrations by Ree Drummond and
The Four Doors : a guide to joy, freedom, and a meaningful life by Richard Paul Evans
We’ll be closed all day Monday in honor of Veterans Day, so stop and pick up enough to get you through.

Oehlertz on Relay Team
Headed to State
L-M Sophomore, Destini Oehlertz is one of four girls on
the Storm Lake Girls Swim Team 200 Medley Relay team
that has advanced to the State Swim Meet.
The Regional Swim Meet was held on Saturday,
November 2 in Fort Dodge where the 200 medley relay
team qualified with a time of 1:57.1 earning them 5th
place, qualifying 24th to a trip to the state meet. The
State meet will be held on Saturday, November 9th at
Marshalltown.

Memory Lane receives a new handicapped drinking
fountain generously donated by John, Peggy, Ryan, Parker,
and Spencer Sones.
A lot of muscle was needed to pick up the drinking
fountain and install it on the base. Tim Fischer, Dave
Evans, Jr., Rick Woodley, Thaine Hopkins, and Dean
Oleson are shown after getting the job done.

Stacey Lane Bailey,
34, of Des Moines
died on Friday,
October 25, 2013,
of complications
of breast cancer. A
memorial visitation
was held from 5 p.m.
to 8 p.m. on Monday,
October 28 at Iles
Dunn's Chapel.
Memorial services
were held at 1 p.m.
on Tuesday, October 29 at Iles
Dunn's Chapel followed by burial
of her urn at Sunset Memorial
Gardens Cemetery.
Stacey was born March 1,
1979 in Des Moines. She was a
graduate of Lincoln High School
and William Penn University.
She worked as an Associate
Buyer for Carson Pirie Scott in
Milwaukee, WI before returning
to Des Moines to be near family
and work as Assistant Manager
for The Limited. Stacey loved her
work and remained a hardworking
employee even throughout her
illness. When not working,
she enjoyed scuba diving and
maintaining close relationships
with her family and friends. She

was a strong woman who never
complained as she struggled with
cancer. She will be remembered

Commercial Ag Weed, Insect, Plant Disease Course Set
Pocahontas County will offer the Commercial Ag Weed, Insect and Plant Disease Management Continuing Instructional
Course (CIC) for commercial pesticide applicators Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013. The program will be shown at locations
across Iowa through the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Pest Management and the Environment (PME)
program.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the course runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The registration fee is $35 on or before
November 6 and $45 after Nov. 6. To register, contact Dianne Dirks at the ISU Extension and Outreach office in
Pocahontas County by phoning 712-335-3103 or email [email protected].
The course will provide continuing instructional credit for commercial pesticide applicators certified in categories 1A,
1B, 1C and 10. Some of the topics to be covered include pesticide handling; personal protective equipment; pests, pest
management and pesticides; and pesticide stewardship.
Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) Continuing Education Units (CEUs) in Pest Management will be offered at this program.
Any interested participant should bring his or her CCA number.

Iowa 4-H New Volunteer Training
New 4-H Volunteers supporting Iowa 4-H’ers and their families are being supported with training and tools in a two part
Orientation scheduled for the evenings of Tuesday, December 10, 2013 and February 11, 2014. Their ‘Tool Kit’ will
provide club resources to: • help their families, • work with youth, • learn new skills, • help the community, • meet and get
to know people in the community, • develop leadership skills, • use personal skills and knowledge, and • learn more about
community efforts and activities.
One of the things that distinguishes 4-H from other programs and makes us strong is the role of volunteers. All 4-H
clubs must have adult leadership. Volunteers have been an integral part of the success of 4-H since the 1920’s. Adult 4-H
volunteers serve as club leaders, project leaders, camp counselors, etc. Some
volunteers work directly with youth and others serve as trainers and mentors.
All 4-H volunteers have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to
positive youth development.
State 4-H New Volunteer Training is designed for new 4-H Volunteers
committing to a long term experience working with 4-H youth as club, project,
Clover Kids leaders. Volunteers committing to these roles are required to attend
a state supported new volunteer training within their first 12 months of being
screened and approved as a 4-H Volunteer.
Region 6 (Buena Vista, Cherokee, Pocahontas, Calhoun, Sac and Ida counties)
training will be held in Storm Lake at the Buena Vista County Extension Office
as follows: Part 1- December 10th 6pm – 9pm and Part 2- February 11th 6pm –
9pm

Yard and Garden: Dealing with Fallen
Leaves
At this time of year homeowners clearly understand why another term for
“autumn” is “fall.” With the slightest breeze, shade and ornamental trees send
a shower of leaves to carpet the lawn, drive and sidewalk. Horticulturists with
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach answer homeowners’ questions
as they decide how to deal with fallen leaves. To have additional questions

Do I need to remove the leaves on my lawn? Turfgrass plants use sunlight,
water and nutrients to manufacture food. In fall, lawn areas beneath large trees
are often completely covered with leaves. The leaf debris prevents the turfgrass
plants from manufacturing and storing food prior to winter. A thick layer of
leaves (little or no grass is visible) will need to be raked up and removed. It’s
possible to deal with a thin layer of leaves (areas of grass are clearly visible) by
chopping them up with a mulching mower. Small quantities of shredded leaves
will filter down into the grass canopy rather than rest on the grass surface.
How can I accelerate the decomposition of leaves in my compost pile?
Leaves contain high levels of carbon and small amounts of nitrogen. The
microbes that decompose leaves and other types of organic matter require
nitrogen for their own metabolism and growth. A compost pile composed
mainly of leaves decomposes slowly because the leaves don’t contain adequate
levels of nitrogen for the microbes.
To promote decomposition, mix leaves with grass clippings or other materials
high in nitrogen. If possible, shred the leaves prior to composting. The smaller
the size of the material, the faster it will decompose.
Construct the compost pile in layers. Each 6- to 8-inch-layer of plant
material should be topped with 1 inch of soil or compost. A small amount of
an all-purpose garden fertilizer, such as 10-10-10, can also be added to supply
nitrogen to the microbes. Continue to build the compost pile in layers until it is
3 to 5 feet high.
Finally, water the pile regularly and turn it about once every two weeks.
Can leaves be used as a mulch? Shredded or composted leaves are an
excellent mulch for vegetable gardens, raspberry plantings, perennial flower beds
and around trees and shrubs. While the leaves of some trees, such as oak, are
acidic, they can be safely used in the yard and garden. An oak leaf mulch has
little effect on soil pH.
Leaves are a poor winter mulch for strawberries and herbaceous perennials.
Plants covered by leaves over the winter months may be damaged due to excess
moisture trapped under the leaves. Clean, weed-free wheat, oat or soybean straw
is an excellent winter mulch for strawberries and perennials.

October 21, 2013
The Utility Board of Trustees of Laurens, Iowa met in regular session at the Municipal Building, 272 N.
Third Street, Laurens, Iowa, at 5:30 p.m. on the above date. Present were Trustees Richard Main, Ben
Storms and Jerry Runneberg. Also present was General Manager Chad Cleveland.
The agenda for the October 21, 2013 meeting stands approved as presented.
The Board of Trustees and General Manager did a tour of the Electric and Communications facilities.
No specific action was taken.
The minutes of the September 18, 2013 meeting stand approved as presented.
Motion by Trustee Storms and seconded by Trustee Runneberg to approve the list of bills for
September 2013 in the amount of $608,938.25. Ayes: All. Nays: None. Motion carried.

The Trustees reviewed the Utility Funds Report. The Board had received rate quotes from Laurens
State Bank and West Iowa Bank. Motion by Trustee Runneberg and seconded by Trustee Storms to
purchase two (2) $100,000.00 CDs from Laurens State Bank. One of the CDs will mature in 7 months
and the other CD will mature in 12 months. Ayes: All. Nays: None. Motion carried.
Discussion was held on the new Generation Plant project. According to the Engineer both GrundmanHicks and HK Scholz still have the punch lists to address as well as providing the engineer with “As
Built Drawings”. Until these items are addressed, the engineer will not start closing out the contracts.
Discussion was held on the first draft of the 2014 budget. No specific action was taken.
There being no further business, on motion and vote, the meeting adjourned at 10:40 p.m.
