Weijun first
caught the
attention of TV viewers with
his resounding Win at the
1999 Asia-wide Star Search
– Singapore. Steadily, Nick
gained recognition as the
actor with multiple talents. His
minor stint in Fashion with his
runner-up win at Teenage
Magazine Model Search
and walking for Vietnam
Fashion Week, led up to
him becoming an actor and
performing artiste. A singer,
host and an actor not just
on TV but also on stage,
as a stage actor and more
interestingly, as a Chinese
Opera artiste.
Teochew Opera may
seem passe to many of
his contemporaries but
Nick holds a deep interest
and true appreciation for
this traditional art form. His
passion and hard work
have seen him through
commendable public and
charitable performances
as well as representing
Singapore to perform in
countries like Hong Kong,
Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei,
Malaysia and Shanghai
for the 2012 Shanghai
International Arts Festival.
With his feet firmly planted
on the ground, he strives to
do better each time. Nick is
the First actor in Singapore
to master the unique art
of Mask Changing. For
the past two years, Nick
has been in the guidance
of a professional Mask
Changing Master from
China, learning through
practice on the art of Mask
Changing. Nick only started
performing Mask Changing
on stage last year in April.
He creatively promotes
Chinese Opera and Mask
Changing performance in
a hybrid genre that fused
western magic techniques
with the traditional Chinese
opera dance. With many
years of harvesting his talent
in Chinese Opera since he
started at the age of 13, now
meet Nick – the performer,
opera artiste and magician.
In 2011 Nick started his own
events company “Tok Tok
Chiang Arts and Culture
Events Management”
showcasing his services
from being an opera
artiste to a stage singer
to a fun-loving host in his
most affable ways. Tok Tok
Chiang also plans and
conceptualizes cultural
events and workshops
for corporate companies,
museums, shopping centres
and schools. The workshops
educate and create
awareness amongst the
students and even working
adults, to acknowledge
their dialect group roots and
appreciate something so
elaborate and historical of
an art form. This initiative by
Nick Shen through Tok Tok
Chiang, stems from his avid
passion for this performing
art and to still keep it alive, or
at least appreciated.
