Hot Melt
Hot Melt adhesives are solid polymers that melt when subjected to
temperatures of between 80 and 220 ºC and solidify again quickly
when it cools down. The Hot Melt adhesives are 100% dry
substances and are applied in a melt without the use of water or
solvents.

Electrospinning
A high voltage is applied to a polymer solution such that charges are
induced within the solution. One electrode of the voltage source is placed
into the solution and the other is connected to the collector. When charges
within the solution reached a critical amount, a fluid jet will erupt from the
droplet at the tip of the needle resulting in the formation of a Taylor cone.
The electrospinning jet will travel towards the region of lower potential,
which in most cases, is a grounded collector. A web of solid randomly
oriented nanofibers is deposited on the surface of the grounded collector.

III. TRENDS AND NEW MARKETS
The technical textiles sector
obtained by coating, laminating
and functionalization is a highly
technical,
very
competitive
market and in a constant growth.
In 2011, for example, nearly 8%
of laminating companies in the
EU were Spanish (27), with a
turnover of 400 million euros
(European total turnover= 8.000
million euros).
Coated / laminated technical fabrics demand
distribution at European level, in 2011(Detrell A.
The European Coating and Laminating Sector.
TCL2012).

III. TRENDS AND NEW MARKETS
In Europe, hotmelt technology is a
fully developed technology , which
started to come into use in the
early 2000s, with the development
of new laminating sytems, new
membranes and new adhesives.
Nevertheless, it did take about 10
years to reach its true potential and
the leading technical finishing
companies
are
already
incorporating it into their production
processes, starting to generate
technical articles with a high
demand.
Sales evolution (data in million metres) of
waterproof-breathable articles in the EU (Detrell A.

III. TRENDS AND NEW MARKETS
Trends
Use of additives to obtain special features which are not provided by
the finishing products available in the actual market.
New technical finishing products more environmentally friendly and
health safer (fluorocarbons C6-C4 versus C8/PFOA, phthalate-free
plasticizers, glyoxalic resin with "zero formaldehyde”,N-P base
flame retardants).
Coatings/prints with conductive polymers or metallic particles

New possible markets
Printed Electronics: Flexible substrates for the electrical/electronics
sector, using conductive inks, conductive polymers or resins treated
with metallic nanoparticles.
Textile Architecture: Outdoor fabrics, high tenacity PES base, coated
or laminated with fluorinated polymers.
Thermal and acoustic isolation: Through coating process, using
micro/nanostructured treated with UV/IR reflective particles
Manufacture of technical finishing eco-sustainable machinery that
favor the low consumption of water, energy and chemicals, allowing
to obtain functional fabrics and even directly made-up garment.

CASE I: THERMOCHROMIC COATINGS
Objetive
 Camouflage military uniform, It is intended to move from a
arid camouflage to a wooded camouflage through a change in
Tª, 35-39ºC. Thermochromic dyes and auxiliary products are
studied for their use by frame printing process. It is very
important to stabilize lightfastness result.
 Firefighter suit , It is intended to detect high temperatures
and warn them in a visual way through changing the color of
the fabric, at 60ºC and at 80ºC. In this research, dyes and
auxiliary products that could be used by knife coating
technology, should be studied.

Conclusions / next steps
The chromatic range must combine the change of the
thermochromic pigments color with the textile substrate base color.
Durability and color fastness in some cases can be improved
(following steps)
It is possible to create fabrics that change color in a 'smart' way,
induced by an external stimulus ( in this case, temperature change)
Using simple conventional techniques and processes (such as
printing or knife coating), it is possible to apply a thermochromic
finishing with highly technical end-use applications.

Conclusions
Hometextile, can be multifunctional product as acoustic and light
absorbent with fire retardant properties.
Hometextile, as a decorative element, can achieve that the sound,
coming from a source, will be irradiated homogeneously in all
directions, to obtain an ideal diffuse sound field, avoiding
reverberations.

V. GENERAL CONCLUSIONS
Additivation of coating paste to improve technichal performance
such as resistence to abrasion or to molten metals, or to obtain new
properties such as color change, is possible by using specific
additives.
A major effort must be done in formulation to avoid several
problems. Application techniques and processes required to obtain
this coating functionalization are very simple and conventional.
Final obtained textile articles should present a balance between
functionality and durability.
