ELA BOYS BASKETBALL
By: Ryan Molloy
Basketball has been very fun this year, especially considering that this was my last year on the ELA
basketball team.
I really enjoyed our last game, even though it ended in a heartbreaking loss against HRK. We
fought until the end, but ultimately we lost by one in a 32-31 game.
I have been playing on the team since fourth grade and I never played in a better and closer game. While I enjoy being
able to sleep in on the weekends now that we don’t have basketball practice, I will sincerely miss playing for Coach
Kowalski and with all of my friends on the team.
SPELLING BEE
Miss Kinzler
Congratulations to Krishna Nair, ELA Building Winner!
On Friday, January 25, 2013, 7th-grader KRISHNA NAIR won East Lake Academy’s allschool spelling bee.
Krishna competed among the following classroom winners:

grader
TARA JANAS
ZACHARY YOUNG
KAITLIN ZELINSKI
KARINA KAVANAGH
The bee took place in front of 125 students and over 20 visiting adults!
The participating students were calm, cool and collected as they were given quite challenging words to spell. Adding to
the excitement, standout 4th grader TARA JANAS, placed in third, where she held her own among Krishna and Karina for
24 rounds! Congratulations, Tara!
Overall, the school bee lasted 41 rounds, where the suspense incessantly built upon
each word uttered. After 40 rounds of a well-fought battle between Krishna and Karina, Karina placed as the runner-up and Krishna winning with the word, recyclable, concluding this year’s bee. As it was Karina’s last ELA spelling bee, East Lake will miss her
in the school bee next year!
Next, Krishna’s is to compete at sectionals on
Wednesday, February 27, at Lake County College at 6:30pm.
Good luck, Krishna! The ELA Spelling Bee
Committee and the entire ELA community are
so proud of Krishna and all of our spellers!

Catholic School Week
Miss McCarthy
Dear Parents,
Thank you for helping make Catholic Schools Week such a success!
The week was filled with activities including the teacher swap, classroom visits with Emily Roman and Brother Brett, mass with Bishop Rassas, faith trivia, and our concluding pep rally!
Students also enjoyed decorating their
classroom doors and guessing the
teacher/staff display outside the gym.
What a joy it was to see the excitement on each of the students faces as
they entered into each activity. Both
the students and staff truly enjoyed
celebrating together!
As always, thank you for your prayers and continued support.
What a blessing it is to be learning at a Catholic School.
God bless,
The Catholic Schools Week Committee

SPANISH HERITAGE NIGHT
Sra. Gonzales
¡Estupendo!
What a great adjective to describe the Fourth Annual Spanish Heritage Night held on Tuesday, January
29, 2013. Since the performance is held during Catholic Schools Week we began with a prayer written last year in honor of CSW and read by this year’s seventh grade.
After thanking God for His guidance, THE FOURTH
GRADE kicked off the night with a dance number from
Brasil to the song “A Galera”.
Choreographed by ELA parent, Mrs. Lori Young, the fourth
grade performed a fun and energetic number.
Following this exhilarating number, the FIFTH GRADE dramatized an original theatre production of “The First Encounter of the Aztecs and the Spanish Conquistadors” written by the 5th grade class.
The fifth grade recently learned about Hernán Cortés and his
encounter with the Aztecs and the ultimate demise of the
Aztecs at his hands.
The students in the class decided to write and act out the
first and last encounter of Hernán Cortés with Moctezuma
and Cuathemoc, the final leaders of the Aztec nation. The
final battle scene was dramatic!
The 6TH GRADE CLASS decided to explore their artistic
talents. The first group choreographed a dance to
“Danza Kaduro”, a Zumba favorite and made it their
own. Dancers included Marissa DeLeon, Kathryn Kurt,
Ben Burkett, Zella Stockhausen, Libby Tancula, Olivia
Sabalaskey, Anya Kavanagh and Amira Samra.
The second group wrote an informative script about
John Lloyd Stevens, the first man to discover the
Mayan temples. The following students were members
of the cast; Meghan Simutis, Emi Gorman, Kaitlin Zelinski, Jacob Trevino and Courtney Carreira.

SPANISH HERITAGE NIGHT
Sra. Gonzales
The 7th grade danced to a mix of “Bamboleo/Hero” by The
Gypsy Kings and Enrique Iglesias. The girls dressed in the
style of a Spanish dancer and the boys donned cummerbunds that enhanced the girl’s costumes.
This dance was choreographed by ELA alumna Mia DiCara, a
sophomore at Carmel Catholic High School.
A big thanks to Mia Di Cara, who spent countless hours
creating and teaching this dance to the seventh grade and
to Mrs. Catalina DiCara for sewing the costumes.
After dancing in last year’s Spanish Heritage Night, the class of 2013 wanted to
show off their dancing skills for the last time to -”Techno Cumbia” by Selena. This
fun mix of line dancing to the Cumbia a traditional Colombian dance made the audience want to join.
Thanks again to Mrs. Lori Young for her choreography skills and for finding such great
dance songs.
While the 8th grade changed for the Finale, the audience was entertained by Zach and Gigi
Young dancing the “Santa Rita” a Mexican Polka in traditional costumes. The dance was
fast and beautiful!
For the Finale, the 8th grade girls and boys decided to write
their own lyrics to some favorite songs.
The girls sang a cover of Taylor Swift’s, “We Are Never, Ever,
Getting Back Together” entitled “Nunca nos olvidaremos”.
The lyrics express the friendships they have made here at
ELA and their many talents.
The “Laurel Street Boys” our 8th grade boys sang “Dime por
qué estudiamos español”, or “Why do we study Spanish?”
A fun and entertaining cover of the Backstreet Boys, “I Want
it That Way”.
What a way to end a wonderful night! I wish the Class of 2013 all the best in high school and hope they continue to
learn and enjoy the Spanish language! Gracias y Adiós to Alida Blendonohy, Christian Carreira, Jack Freeman, Isabelle
Haser, Karina Kavanagh, Charlie Kiernan, Ryan Molloy, Annie Murphy, Shaina Royer, Mary Claire Simutis, Hunter Wolff
After the finale, all were invited to sample wonderful dishes representing Colombia, Spain, the Aztecs and Mayas and
Mexico prepared by the parents. Thank you to all the students for their hard work and to the families for their support
of Spanish Heritage Night. How wonderful was it to see ELA alums and current ELA students in grades Pre-K3- 3 come
out in support of their sibling and friends.
¡Hasta el próximo año!

Daddy-Daughter Dance
Mrs. Lindemann
On February 9 the Second Annual Daddy Daughter
Dance took place and it was another great success.
There was an amazing turnout of East Lake Academy
daughters from 2nd grade through 8th, who spent a
special evening with their fathers.
As the couples piled into the Lake
Forest Club, many coming from
dinner beforehand to have the full
experience of spending time together, the party immediately began with the entertainment.
It was a full night of dancing for
both the dads and the daughters.
The deejay played a variety of music across the generations so everyone could enjoy.
During the evening, the Lake Forest Club provided many
hors d'oeuvres and the Dance Committee provided amazing desserts for everyone to indulge in.
No one wanted to leave the dance and nearly everyone
stayed until the very end. Each girl then took home a lovely winter cap embroidered with the school name.
While the event provided an opportunity for the East Lake
dads to socialize with each other, it also allowed them to
have a special night with their daughters and create
memories for years to come.

APOSTOLIC UPDATE
Maureen Kowalski
We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus, to do good work. Ephesians 2:10
The teachers and students of East Lake Academy are embracing this wonderful season of Lent, as we all prepare for the
joy of Easter! On February 14th, Barb Karacic, Director of Beacon Place, came to speak to grades K-8 to kick off our Lenten apostolic project, where we have invited the students to sacrifice a snack item from their morning snack,
or lunch, for Beacon Place.
Beacon Place (Bridging Education and Community Needs, NFP) strives to feed, educate, activate, train, and empower
children and families with food and technology resources that will enable them to improve the welfare of themselves and
their overall community. They are dedicated to the advancement of the underserved and underprivileged in our society,
and provide job readiness and life skills development for children, teens, adults and families so that they can increase
their engagement and contributions to society.
Beacon Place has four major components: Beacon Lunch Bunch Program, Beacon Backpack Program, Beacon Green (in
partnership with the University of Illinois Extension of Lake County and the Waukegan Public Library), and Beacon Tech
Program. Our students will be offering snack/lunch sacrifices, throughout Lent, to support the Beacon
Lunch Bunch and Backpack Program.
In Lake County, children of families living below the federal poverty level are qualified to receive free or reduced lunches
at school throughout the school year. However, when summer break starts, this meal source ends and hunger begins
for many children. Seeing this need, Barb Karacic started a program to provide free lunches to children aged 3-18, two
days per week. In the summer of 2012, this program averaged 200 children per day coming for lunch and wanting to
stay! This summer, the Beacon Lunch Bunch program will be expanded to include an afternoon of day camp activities,
supported by a volunteer staff of more than 40 high school/college students and 15 adults.
An offshoot of the Beacon Lunch Bunch program is the Beacon Backpack Food Program for kids. While the summer
lunch program helped increase food delivery, many children were still going home to hungry houses on the weekend.
So a program was started to provide a backpack filled with child friendly, healthy, nutritionally balanced and portion controlled food for the children to have at home on the weekend. At the end of last summer, over 200 backpacks had been
distributed to children aged 5-18. At the conclusion of the season, those same backpacks were filled with a supplement
of school supplies, and given back to the children to use for school.
Along with some portion of fresh food supplements like fruits and vegetables, the food donations from our East Lake
Academy students will help to fill these backpacks for children participating in the Beacon Lunch Bunch Program. We
are eager to see our food donations grow throughout the 40 days of Lent, and in turn, bless other children who would
otherwise go without such food!
In addition, all of the ELA teachers and students are praying and offering sacrifices for their Lenten Secret Sacrificer,
who will be revealed to all just prior to Easter break!
Coming up, grades 3-5 and will be volunteering in a food packing event at Feed My Starving Children in Libertyville.
More details on this exciting apostolic project will be forthcoming!
We are truly grateful to all of our East Lake Academy families for
partnering with us to form young leaders who go into the world and serve for Christ!

Principal Update
Recently we sang together… “we will rise again from Ashes, from the good
we’ve failed to do. We rise again from ashes to create ourselves anew”.
This Lenten season at East Lake Academy, we are focused on doing the good deeds that God has
called each of us to do.
Bishop George Rassas was here to celebrate Mass for our school community at the end of January. Bishop Rassas gave us a beautiful reminder of this calling that we each have. He gave the
simple example of picking up a fellow student’s paper in class as to how God is constantly calling
us to do good deeds.
Mrs. Patel
Principal
During Lent, we are focusing on the opportunities before us to do good.


On March 8th the 6th, 7th and 8th grades visited Feed My Starving Children in Libertyville.
The 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will be making the same trip on March 22nd.
Our 5th and 8th graders served at a local PADS shelter in Libertyville on Saturday, March 2nd.
As you can see, it will be a busy time of service for our students. On a spiritual note, the 6 th, 7th and 8th graders will be
attending a middle school Lenten retreat on Thursday, March 28 th. The girls retreat will take place at Marytown and the
boys retreat will be at the Kiernan home.
Academically, we are keeping just as busy. We are extremely proud to report that four of our 8th graders thus far
have been awarded annual scholarship money for their outstanding performances on the recent high school entrance exam at Loyola Academy, Woodlands Academy and Carmel Catholic respectively. As of now, all of our 8th
grade students have been accepted at their high schools of choice. Our students work very hard and it is great to see
the fruit of their labor.
All the students and all of our school families will remain in my prayers
this Lenten season.
Our Seminarians
The 6TH GRADE seminarian is
Connor Danstrom, who is
from Winnetka, Illinois.

ADMISSIONS UPDATE
The Open House was rescheduled for February 21 st
and in spite of threatening weather…again, all went smoothly and attendance was fantastic.
Admissions is very busy with many discerning families. Please keep all prospective families in your
prayers as we continue to grow in our mission at East Lake Academy.
If anyone you know missed the open house and would like a personal tour, please have them call
me to schedule one.
The best way to learn about the mission of East Lake is to witness the teachers and students in Mrs. Elizabeth Simutis

Throughout November and December, we have learned much
about the beautiful virtue of Charity and the many forms in
which it is manifested both internationally and locally.
Dress a Girl Around the World is an organization
Sra. Finlayson
Gaby Guevara, a Regnum Christi coworker from El Salvador,
shared her experience as a missionary working abroad with
Mission Youth in Haiti. Her presentation was impactful and
opened the eyes of our girls to the needs of a world beyond
East Lake yearning to feel Christ’s love through them.
Sidney Czynski also visited us. Sidney is the local coordinator for the Chicago branch of Dress a Girl around the World.
She shared the amazing work this charity does to help impoverished girls both within the United States and abroad.

these clothes – in particular dresses for girls who
don’t own a dress. East Lake Academy’s very own

Dress a Girl Around the World seeks to help build the confidence and self-worth of young girls living in poverty by
providing them dresses. These unique dresses are made with
love and attention to detail by a volunteer using little more
than a gently used pillowcase! Our STRIVE girls were truly
able to see the parable of the mustard seed at work right in
their own town.
The message we received was clear: by using the talents God
has given us, we are able to bless others in meaningful and
powerful ways far beyond what we can understand. So it
was that our girls were able to put into practice all they had
learned about charity, as they lovingly gave of their time and
creative talents to decorate doors for Catholic Schools Week.
To see how they approached this task with love and urgency
truly warmed my heart. Working with these girls gives
me an overwhelming sense of peace that there is
great hope for the world because these children are in
it and wanting to change it for Christ.

CLASSROOM NEWS & VIEWS
PRE-K CORNER
Mrs. Campanella
Recently, the Pre K4 students celebrated the
Chinese New Year.
Children welcomed the Year of the Snake with stories, projects, dance and a special visitor from China!
As part of their morning centers children created a Chinese lantern. As we read, many homes in China use similar lanterns both
to decorate and to bring things like prosperity and happiness.
Students also practiced using chopsticks by picking up cotton
balls and pinto beans. This activity was great for developing their
fine motor skills!
As part of the celebration, we read the story
Sam and the Lucky Money by Karen Chinn.
Sam is upset that his “lucky money” is not enough to
buy any of the toys he wants, but when he sees a
shoeless, old man, he realizes the value of a few dollars to someone who has nothing.
The story stimulated conversation on how, even as a
four-year-old, children can show generosity and kindness.
As a special treat, Mrs. Fedyszyn shared some of her treasures
from China. She told students some of the differences between
their culture and our own.
For example, it is typical for a family to “sweep away” the old to
symbolize their readiness for all the things that the New Year will
bring.
The number 8 is considered to be a lucky number. In Hong Kong
they lit 888,888 fireworks. Mrs.
Fedyszyn also explained the lai see, a red envelope with money
inside. At the end of her presentation she gave a lai see to everyone!

CLASSROOM NEWS & VIEWS
SCIENCE PHUN DAY
Miss Campanella
The January Science Phun day was very cool-- literally! First, we discussed how
frigid winter weather relates to our faith. For example, the pure white snow is
symbolic of a soul cleansed by the Sacrament of Confession. We see this in scripture, "Cleanse me with hyssop, that I may be pure; wash me, make me whiter
than snow" (Psalm 51:9).
Then we investigated the effect of salt on ice. When the salt melts
the ice, the temperature actually gets COLDER. It is called "freezing
point depression," because the mixture has to be at a LOWER temperature in order to freeze. We used this fancy science to make a cold,
sweet treat- ice cream! After measuring out the ingredients and putting that sealed bag inside a bag full of ice and salt, we wrapped it all
in a towel to make sure our hands didn't get "burned" because it was
so cold. We shook up the mixture for about five minutes, and then
opened it up for a delicious snack. It's a fun experiment you could
even try at home!
You'll need:
 1/4 cup milk
 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream
 1 Tbsp. sugar
 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
 Ice
 Rock salt (or sea salt)
 A large towel
 Small Ziploc bag
 Large Ziploc bag
Place food ingredients into a small Ziploc bag,
letting out as much as air possible before closing the bag. In a large zip lock bag, put several cups of ice and about a half cup of rock
salt. Put the small bag in the large bag, and
let the air out of the bag before sealing
it. Then, wrap a towel around the large bag
to keep your hands from getting cold. Shake
the bag for at least 5 minutes, then open it up
to eat your ice cream!
(If you try this, please have adult supervision, as you can get hurt from the ice getting so cold.)
AFTER CARE
Miss Campanella
Creativity continues in After Care!
The second grade boys wrote and performed a short play for the
rest of the group which was completely created from their own
imaginations. Over the course of a few days, they developed a
written script with lines for each person.
Their stage set was made of waffle blocks and they used hot wheels cars as props to tell the
story of a police car chase. The audience of students was so engaged they wanted an encore! The next day, several PreK boys followed in the footsteps of the older students and
made a short play of their own.
We recently learned about the moon’s characteristics, like its craters
and the phases of the moon. After watching a BrainPOP Jr. video
about the moon, we discussed its current phase.
Then, we made a moon project out of Play-Doh. On a piece of paper, we spread the Play-Doh
into a circle, then pretended that a marble was a meteor crashing into the moon. When the
students pressed the marble into the Play-Doh moon, a crater was left behind!

WHAT
IS A
CATHOLIC SCHOOL?
Having just celebrated Catholic Schools Week the question arose in my mind:
What exactly is a Catholic school?
Part of the answer might be practical. “It is a private education provider, which studies have
shown to produce better test scores and graduation rates than public schools and - lower -pupil
cost.” This is true, but hardly inspiring.
A sociological answer might be that it is a community made up of Catholic faculty, staff and
students; yet Catholic schools serve thousands of non-Catholic students as well.
Br. Brett
An academic answer might be that it is a school that includes religion class as part of the curriculum, yet Germany
comes to mind as an example of religion classes in public schools.
I suppose there are experts in the field of education who could do a much better job defining a Catholic school than I
have, but I think a Catholic school is distinctly unique in its identity and mission because of its theological character.
Before Jesus Christ ascended into heaven he entrusted to his apostles and to their successors “the mission to teach all
nations and to preach the Gospel to every creature.” (Lumen Gentium 24) Every bishop, as a successor to the apostles,
is entrusted with a threefold mission: to govern, to sanctify, and to teach.
To establish a Catholic school, it is necessary to have the permission of the local bishop. This is not just about protecting the Catholic “brand.” To establish a Catholic school is to participate in the teaching mission the Church has received
from Christ. To be a Catholic school is more than just having a religion class, or faith and morals class. A Catholic
school teaches Christ. The faith should be present in every facet of education.
Christ is someone “who knew how to teach the essential art: the art of being authentically human”, “the art of living
and dying.” (Spe Salvi 6) The teaching mission of the Church is more than just giving classes on faith and morals. It is
more than just Catechism and CCD classes. It’s about the meaning of life.
A Catholic school is a community that lovingly asserts that life has meaning,
and that it is absolutely true that life is good and beautiful. It gives witness
to the truth that every human being has incomparable value and dignity. It
believes that life is a gift that must be lived to the full. A life well lived must
be full in all its parts: intellectual and academic, faith and character, athletics and arts, service and apostolate. This is what the Church has received
from Christ and wishes to make accessible to all.
I would like to conclude with an idea from Pope Benedict: “joy, the fruit of the Holy Spirit, is a fundamental distinguishing characteristic of Christians.” (Benedict XVI, June 1, 2012) If we are also to take joy as a sign of a Catholic school,
then one glance at our faculty, staff and students speaks more loudly and eloquently than test scores, electronic whiteboards, and extracurricular activities ever will.
Yours in Christ,
Br Brett Taira, LC

man"); that is, providing its students with an integral
formation. Our educational program consists of three
essential elements: teaching, educating, forming.
To teach means to provide the student with the intellectual capabilities, content and skills needed to respond
to the demands of today's society.
To educate means to train the student in the habit of
intellectual rigor, structured reasoning, and in the appreciation of beauty; it means to cultivate sensitivity,
memory, imagination; and finally, to develop the art of
communication and the ability to express oneself clearly and elegantly.
To form is to lead the student to become a person for
others, with an upright ethical code, sensitivity toward
the needs of others- especially the most disadvantaged
- and an openness to human and spiritual values. .

COMMUNITY NEWS
Many blessings and miracles come from our school on a daily basis. Praise God
for all the good news!
Our East Lake Academy MATHletes competed at Carmel High School
on Saturday, February 23rd.
This math contest was for 7th and 8th grade students from various
Catholic schools in the area. Read the results of how we did in the next
ELA Newsletter!
In this way students are prepared not just for professional success, but also for their self-realization as persons and authentic Christians in the various facets of
their personal and professional lives.
