FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK…
Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Francis de Sales
Parish,
This Wednesday is the Feast of the Exaltation of the
Holy Cross. This feast has its roots in a historical event
that took place in the early 4th century. St. Helena, the
mother of the Emperor Constantine, went to Jerusalem in
order to search for the holy places associated with the life
of Christ. While there, she razed a second century pagan
temple, which was said to be built over Christ’s tomb, in
order to make room for Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher,
which her son would build. During the excavation,
workers found three crosses, one of which was identified
as the cross of Christ.
The cross has become a central symbol of Christian
belief. It represents Christ’s triumph over sin and death,
and stands as a symbol of hope for all who suffer and
struggle in this world. The cross reminds us that God is
with us in the midst of our trials and struggles. It is
stands as a sign of Christ’s self-giving, saving love. We
venerate the cross as a sign of our faith, and we place all
our hope in Christ crucified and resurrected!
God’s Blessings,
Fr. Jim Schuerman
Queridos Miembros de la Parroquia de San Francisco de
Sales,
Cristo crucificado y resucitado!
Que Dios los bendiga,
Padre Jim Schuerman

UPDATE ON THE MILLION
HOURS OF VOLUNTEERING
CHALLENGE
The chalice is back! Don’t be
disappointed by the amount of wine in
our chalice. Originally our challenge
included St. Benedict’s and St.
Catherine’s Parishes in addition to our
own St. Francis de Sales.
Circumstances did not allow for their
participation. Does that mean that we
are giving up on our goal of a million
hours? It is more than an extremely
aggressive number. What we have
done alone in our parish is
phenomenal! We have seen more
volunteerism this year than in many
years.
Granted, some of our
parishioners have been giving many,
many hours consistently for a long
time. This year many who have never
volunteered have stepped forward.
We had close to 150 parishioners
assist at Farm Technology during the
hottest days of the summer. Project
2017 and the Renovation Committee
members have each put in hundreds of
hours, hours at Food Pantries, taking
care of the Altar, singing in the choir,
Bible Study and so much more. Add
to that, the parishioners who have
added an hour here or there by helping
a friend or neighbor and we at St.
Francis can be very proud. All of these
hours big and small add up to a vital,
alive parish. We should be very proud
no matter what the final total in
November when the Holy Year of
Mercy ends. We are not done yet, so
keep those hours coming. Fill out the
form below and drop into the
collection basket or the boxes at the
church entrances. You can email to
me at [email protected] or
call (630) 310-4703 or drop them off
at the parish office. Thank you to all
who have contributed hundreds of
hours or one hour. Every hour is
important!
