Thomas Niel to Perform at CTK
Thomas Niel will perform at the Cathedral of Christ the King
as part of the 18th Annual Summer Organ Festival on
Wednesday, June 27 at 7:30 pm. Thomas has served as
Organist of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in
Lafayette, Louisiana since 1992. In 1995 he became that
parish’s Director of Music as well. A native of Lake Charles,
Louisiana, Mr. Niel began his study of music there with Jerry
Crews and later with Fred Sahlmann of McNeese State
University. He graduated as Valedictorian from LaGrange
High School in Lake Charles before pursuing the Bachelor of Music degree on
scholarship at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where he
graduated with honors, an organ student of Robert Anderson.
As Director of Music and Organist, Mr. Niel is responsible for nearly all the
music that occurs at St. John Cathedral, including four weekend masses, high
holy days, and all weddings and funerals. As director of the Cathedral Choir
he has produced two compact disc recordings, “Cantique,” and “Christmas
Night.” Mr. Niel has also published music under the aegis of GIA Music in
Chicago.

JUNE 17, 2012
Stewardship of Treasure
How shall I repay the Lord for his goodness to me?” Psalm 116
Today, Ezekiel describes how God nurtures the trees to give shade and a dwelling for birds.
This reading is linked to St. Mark’s Gospel that features Jesus telling the parable of the
mustard seed. This seed is one of the smallest of seeds, yet grows to a plant large enough for
birds to nest there. Faith in Christ, too, may start out small, but when nurtured through the
Eucharist and other sacraments, prayer, and the Word of God, can grow to be very powerful.
We, as faith-filled stewards, know that as our discipleship in Christ grows, so, too, does our
stewardship obligation in building the kingdom of God.
Peter’s Pence Collection Next Week
Next week our diocese will take up the Peter’s Pence Collection, which provides the
Holy Father with the funds he needs to carry out his most important charitable
works. The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression,
and natural disasters. Through your generosity, we can cast the peace of Christ
upon the world.

CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE KING
History of Father’s Day
The idea of celebrating
Father's Day Festival was
given by Ms. Sonora Dodd,
a loving daughter from
Spokane. Her father, Henry Jackson
Smart, single-handedly raised Sonora
and five of her siblings after the death
of her mother during childbirth.
When Sonora attended a Mother's
Day Sermon in 1909, she thought that
if there is the day to honor mothers
then there should also be a day to
honor fathers. Sonora worked
relentlessly for years to ensure that the
idea of Father's Day became a reality.
In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge
first recognized Father's Day. In view
of the massive popularity of the
festival, in 1972, President Richard
Nixon established a permanent
national observance of Father's Day to
be held on the third Sunday of June.
Over the years, the concept of
celebrating Father's Day spread
beyond geographical boundaries.
Today, millions of children across the
world express gratitude for their dads
as they celebrate Father's Day.

CTK-CKS Staff Challenge
It was a balmy summer afternoon. The air was thick with anticipation. On one
sideline, the Hatfields (Faculty & Staff from Christ the King School)….on the
other, the McCoys (Staff from the Cathedral). Both were ready to do battle to
determine the ultimate whiffle ball champion for 2012!
Great fun was had by all as the Staff of the Cathedral hosted the Faculty & Staff
from Christ the King School for the first ever CTK-CKS Staff Challenge. After
dining on every athlete’s favorite lunch, The Varsity, teams headed to the
Greenspace for the game. Official events began with an opening flag ceremony
and national anthem, complete with a “fly over” courtesy of Fr. Michael and his
remote control airplane.
Competition was fierce and not without a few unfortunate injuries. We’ll keep the
final score a mystery, but rest assured it was a great team-building event for all.
Plans are already in the works for a re-match next summer. Play ball!

Rainbows Program
The Cathedral of Christ the King will
offer the Rainbows
program during the
2012-2013 school year
to children in the Atlanta community
who are in pre-K through eighth
grade. Rainbows is an internationally
recognized organization that provides
peer support groups for children who
are dealing with emotions resulting
from a core-family loss such as death,
separation, divorce, deployment,
deportment, incarceration or
abandonment.
The 22-week Rainbows program will
meet at CTK on Tuesday evenings
from 6:45-7:45 pm, beginning with a
Parent Info Session on September 11,
2012. The program is open to all
members of the Atlanta community
and cost for the program is as follows.
$20/child for CTK parishioners and
CKS school families in grades 1-8
$25/child for non-parishioners in
grades 1-8
For Pre-K, cost is $50/child due to
increased cost of program
materials
The Rainbows curriculum emphasizes
listening and communication skills to
help participants sort out confusion,
anger and other emotions.
Participants, in age-defined groups,
are guided through activities and
reflections to help them begin the
healing process. Families should be at
least 6 months past the core-family
loss for this program to be most
effective. For more information or to

This calling to the ministry of
catechist is a vocation. That call is the
voice of the Holy Spirit. (NDC, 228)
The word catechist comes from a
Greek root word that means “to
echo.” Through your life and your
teaching as a catechist you are a
person who echoes the Word of
God. Catechists teach through their
words and example to help nurture
the spiritual growth of our young
children. The four aims of catechesis
are:
1) To proclaim the Christian message;
2) To prepare for Prayer and
Worship;
3) To build community;
4) To motivate for Christian living
and service.
Preparation and training includes
introduction to content,
understanding of catechetical process
and spiritual growth opportunities.
Classes begin on Sept. 9. Please

ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
JUNE 17, 2012

WELCOME FROM THE PASTOR AND
CATHEDRAL STAFF
Dear Friends in Christ,
On behalf of Archbishop Wilton Gregory, the Clergy and
staff, I welcome you to the Cathedral of Christ the King. I

you are new, I hope and pray that you will join us and be
part of the community of Christ the King. If you are passing
through or visiting the city of Atlanta, I hope you enjoy your
worship experience and please visit us again.
If you would like to know more about our parish, you can
visit our website at www.cathedralofchristtheking.org or

May we, this day and all the days of our lives, know, love
and serve as Jesus did.
Prayers and Blessings,
Father Frank McNamee, Pastor
