FOREWORD
Someone asked me recently what is the value of our club membership. While I
rattled off the figure, something else was on my mind. What is the real value of a
club membership?
Where lies the value? Is it in old decrepit buildings
that scream memories, legacies and heritage,
spanking new facades that assert hopes, expectations
and desires… or is it in the heart of its members?
I prefer to think it’s the latter that builds a club,
because while we can buy hardware, it is the “heartware” that defines a club. Members make and mark
a club. Dollars make sense to operate, manage and
sustain, but nothing rules like the heart.
And it is the heart of Jurong members that have made
so many of our past fund-raising events a success.
Time and again, members and friends of Jurong
Country Club have turned out in droves to raise
funds and help disadvantaged families in Singapore,
especially those around the Jurong area. When the
2004 Tsunami hit our neighbour, Jurong’s heart-ware
was once again tapped to rebuild many destroyed
lives. This year’s recently concluded YHI Jurong
Open Charity Golf was no different. I am heartened by the response shown by
members and friends, and would like to take this moment to personally thank
everyone who has contributed to the success of the Open.
Definitely, the value of a Jurong Country Club membership lies in our heart-ware
– our heart for our friends and compassion for our neighbours, coupled with an
unmistakable passion for life!
A passion that has kept the walls of the Club ringing even as they need repeated
coats of paint to keep them spanking new. Despite our maturing Golfers’
Terrace looking far from the polished expensive cafes of some newer clubs,
members and guests favour its casual intimacy. Diehard fans of the Sunset
Terrace enjoy its laid-back serenity, especially in the muted evening hours. And
though continually plagued by various maintenance problems that require real
attention, our golf course continues to enjoy almost full capacities, and we
continue to draw more. If the success of the recent Korean Night is anything to
go by, our club is positively “happening”!
So as we enter the final quarter of this year and prepare for new waves of change
in 2010, I hope one thing will not change in Jurong. That is the heart of our
Jurong members. May it always burn with passion for golf, compassion for our
friends and light the halls of the club with the ferocity of a tigress defending her
den.
To this end, I bid you all join me as we celebrate the renewal of family ties with
our annual Lantern Festival on 27 September. Then on 16 and 17 October, let
us celebrate our friendships with hearty German fare and bountiful steins in an
extended 2-day long Oktoberfest!
In the words of my German friend, Ein Prosit!

FOREWORD
Dear members
As I have mentioned during our Dialogue Session on 17 July, we are making
plans for a major course upgrade sometime in 2010. For information, our last
golf course re-construction took place 17 years ago and it is in need of a major
upgrade. For the record, local golf clubs upgrade their courses between 6 and
13 years after construction or renovation.
The problems we have to face on a constant basis in an aging course such as
ours are numerous and costly. We have serious drainage problems on both
nines, turf is severely contaminated with weeds especially nutgrass, excessive
organic matter build-up, mutation of turf on the greens resulting in inconsistent
putting speed, tight golfing corridor on the front nine which restricts sunlight
and airflow, an obsolete irrigation system and shrinking greens. Maintaining
an aging course has become very expensive and if we are to remain status quo
we will have to spend an additional $1million a year just on patchwork repairs
with no significant improvements to the course on the whole.
With the course upgrade targeted for next year, a Golf Course Upgrading
Committee has been formed and we are in the final process of selecting a golf
course architect to prepare a conceptual design for a walking as well as buggies
on course with minimum changes to the existing layout but with bigger greens,
improved drainage and irrigation system. With new turfs species both on
fairways and greens, we should see our course reclaiming its past glory as one
of the best courses in Singapore.
By now, members would have known that the Club has awarded a 3-year
contract with effect from July to Pan West Private Limited to operate the Proshops and driving range based on the highest tender price. Members would
now have a wider choice and be able to enjoy a wider range of golf products
right at our own doorstep.
Since the beginning of 2009, the Club has signed seven more fully reciprocal
agreements with Haderslev Golfklub in Denmark, The Links Kennedy Bay
in Western Australia; three clubs in West Malaysia namely Kota Permai Golf
and Country Club Selangor, Kajang Hills Golf Club Selangor and Staffield
Country Club Negeri Sembilan; Kelab Golf Sarawak in East Malaysia and
Tokyo American Club, a social club in Japan. We are still actively looking into
expanding our list of reciprocities.
I am also proud to announce that our 33rd Jurong Open Charity Golf held from
28 to 30 Sept was concluded with resounding success! For the first time, we
managed to raise over $200,000 in aid of Charity. This achievement is all the
more momentous considering the recovering economy. We now have more
funds to disburse to our adopted charities, and this is without doubt due to the
concerted effort and commitment of ALL involved in this event – from the staff/
management to members, friends and sponsors. THANK YOU for the team spirit
and camaraderie!
Until next time, cheers!

Road Widening Works Along Jurong Hollow Tining
& Sand Top
Town Hall
In line with the Government’s plan to transform Jurong into Jurong Lake District, Dressing
the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has already commenced road-widening
works along congested roads surrounding and leading to the Club, starting with
current closures at Jurong East St. 12. More closures and re-routings can be
expected as the LTA carries out its road works in phases from now till 2011.
Changes can also be expected along Jurong Town Hall Road itself as LTA adds
an extra lane each to both directions of the stretch of road from Jurong East
Central to AYE.
Though these works have minimal impact upon the Club itself, except for slight
adjustments to the Blue Tee of Hole 4, we would like to caution members to be
more careful as they drive to the Club.
The Club will be carrying out hollow
tining and sand top dressing on the
greens from Monday 31 August to
Friday 4 September. There will be
no night golf during this period, and
golfers will have to play on temporary
alternate greens.

Roll Call
We welcome the following new staff to the JCC family. We are certain the
additions will enhance our services to members as we strive to be the premier
golf club in Singapore!
Three “Heads” Are Better Than One
With this belief, the Club adds three new dynamos to the Management Team, K.
Sangkuni P. Kunjan, Tan Chow Jin and Selena Lim. Sangkuni, or better known as
SK, joins the Jurong team as Head of Golf while Chow Jin helms both the Sports &
Recreation and F&B departments as the new Head of Lifestyle. Selena adds punch
to the dynamic duo as the Club’s new Sales & Marketing Manager.
A 16-year industry veteran, SK has extensive experience working in major
countries within Asia. Well equipped with the knowledge of golf operations,
course maintenance, turf management as well as course maintenance machineries,
the Club is looking forward to tap on his expertise for our impending course
upgrading project. As an accomplished golf professional with accredited teaching
qualifications, his inputs on training modules for junior golf development have
proven to be highly effective for Asians. Most recently, SK oversaw 2 major
Amateur events in Indonesia, which today are recorded as the Largest Amateur Golf
Championship in Indonesia. Amongst other achievements, SK was instrumental in
turning around a bleeding Club to a profitable one.

Golf Course Upgrading Committee
In view of the club’s major golf
course redevelopment plan, the Club
recently formed the Golf Course
Upgrading Committee (GCUC) to
oversee the project’s development
and progress. Formed in April
this year, the GCUC is helmed by
Captain Bobby Wee with ViceCaptain Joe Pereira, with members
Naranjan Singh, Tony Yue, Ting Sa
Tee and Jeffrey Yu. Each comes with
their expertise to complement the
project, in various fields such as soil
investigation and engineering.
Historical Facts
The idea to upgrade the course was
first mooted in 2006 when it was
recognised that, since its initial
modeling works 17 years ago, the
Club has not embarked on any major
upgrading of the course to improve
and increase its value.
Current Progress
The current golf committee is continuing preparatory
work that began two years ago. Tenders have been called
to invite golf course architects to draw up a master plan,
engage quantity surveyors and invite irrigation consultants
– all expected to be completed by the end of October.
Plans will be prepared for members’ approval at the next
AGM in March.
On top of the above problems, the back nine suffers
additionally due to it being completely backfilled from
swampland. The 6m of peaty soil is followed by soft clay
underneath, and as many knows, the back-nine suffers
from a high water table. These affect the course’s drainage
system and members’ quality of play.
Detailed Studies
The GCUC aims to address the above problems with the
overall redevelopment of the course, while improving the
course and allowing for a versatile concept for walking,
buggy-play and night golfing. The committee also aims
to increase the putting surface, introduce good open
drainage concepts to improve surface run-off, review the
length of certain holes for safety reasons, re-align tees,
as well as install new smart irrigation systems with wall
to wall coverage. Certain trees will also be transplanted
to increase sunlight and allow airflow to the turf grass, as
well as introduce more appropriate trees for the back nine.
Comparative studies were done between the JCC course
and other notable courses in Singapore. Some of the more
popular courses reported a trend of remodeling their
course every three to ten years, with continuous upgrades
being carried out even when the course was remodeled
just a year ago. In contrast, our course has not been
upgraded for 17 years.
Current Problems
The golf course has been facing various problems, such as:
• most of the sub-soil drainage pipes are choked and not
in proper working condition
• insufficient sand capping on the fairways and rough
12
• contamination of nutgrass (weeds) on about 85% of
the tee boxes and fairways
• organic build up of at least 150mm in most areas
jurong country club
Future Aims
The committee expects that the project will take about a
year per nine-hole and work will most likely start on the
front nine first, once members give their nod of approval at
the coming AGM.

Interim Improvements On
The Course
Rip raps, otherwise known as “rock armour”, were erected around
the ponds of the second nine to prevent erosion. As many know, our
second nine sits on a soft clay ground and erosion inevitably occurs
due to ground movement. The rip raps help to strengthen the pond
edges while adding character and a touch of natural beauty to the
pond.

CLUB SCENE
Meeting The
Members
Some 30 members and their spouses
turned up for the Meet-the-Committee
Members (MCMN) Night on Tuesday
14 July at the Ficus Ballroom. This
regular get-together allows our new
members opportunity to meet and
mingle with the Club’s General
Committee members as well as our
fellow members. What do our new
members think of the Club and our
efforts to welcome them into the JCC
family?
Prentice Mark Forsyth
New Transferable Golfing Member
The MCMN is very useful. It feels good that
the committee members take time to come
and meet us new members. It’s a very
worthwhile session, and I get to meet new
members. In fact, I really appreciate the
Management talking about the upcoming
activities, it gives me an orientation on
what’s happening.
Why I joined the Club? Well, actually I’ve
played in Jurong Country Club frequently
with friends who are members, and I was
looking for a golf club, since I already own
a social club. I like the way the course is
managed and marshaled here. There are
no planes going over all the time, and the
management has really shown me some
sincere efforts in the way they manage the
club. It really does seem like the Club has
done their homework on the costing and
planning of the golf course redevelopment,
and I hope that members will support it too
to move the plan forward. With the time
left on our lease, it is really worthwhile to
redevelop the course and add more value
to the club.
Tan Han Tiong
New Transferable Golfing Member
I think the MCMN is a good gesture by the
committee to welcome us new members
into the JCC family. It’s really a good
opportunity for us to get a chance to talk
to the committee members one-on-one,
which I may not have opportunity to do
otherwise.
I joined the Club because it’s convenient,
within the vicinity of my home. I also like
the Golfers’ Terrace and the layout of
the golf course, which allows me to play
both day and night. I hope that there will
be more space to expand and develop
the club further, like maybe adding an
additional course in future (laughs). I know
it sounds difficult at the moment, but it’s
just an idea. I find it good that the Club’s
constantly trying to improve!
Khin War War Moe
New Term Social Member
Gordon Scott Henderson
New Term Golfing (Basic) Member
I personally find the MCMN enjoyable.
I joined the Club mainly because it has
night golfing and it’s near to my work place
and home. It allows me more opportunity
to play golf (laughs). I really like that the
Club is very friendly, and that the golf
medals are so well organised. I even get
phone call reminders for my slots – well
done! I am frankly looking forward to the
golf course renovation and a chance to
play a nicer course. In fact, my wife is also
just beginning to learn golf and it’s good
that the Club has an executive course,
which allows her to practise on the course,
without any feelings of pressure. It allows
her to play quite easily.
16
jurong country club
I think the MCM is really helpful in helping
me integrate into Jurong Country Club.
All the committee members are very
kind and sincerely welcome all the new
members. I feel like I truly belong here.
That’s what made me choose Jurong over
other clubs – I am very impressed by how
the committee members treat all the new
members and I want to be a part of it.
On top of that I definitely like the location,
its vast size, its great facilities and last
of all its quiet and peaceful atmosphere
that does wonders for me. I love the
restaurants (the Green Banyan) and hope
that the sauna will be available the whole
day for all members, as some members
are missing out on this wonderful treat due
to their busy schedule. I also hope for a
steam-room as this will complement the
sauna and make the Club’s facilities more
complete!
CLUB SCENE
Welcomed Transparency
The Eugenia Room was packed to the door on Friday 17 July as almost
one hundred members crowded the hall for the Club’s first Kopi-Chat
session. Initiated by the Channels and Communication Committee,
which is headed by the Club’s Vice-President K K Lim, the Kopi-Chat
is aimed at increasing the levels of transparency in club governance
while at the same time improving two-way communication between
members and the policy makers of the Club.
The informal dialogue session started promptly at 7pm even as
members continued to stroll in and pull up chairs with dinner in
hand. Club President Dr Tan Cheng Bock started the ball rolling
with an overview of the Club’s current position before handing
the mike over to Captain Bobby Wee, who took the floor through plans for a
major redevelopment of the golf course. Members were given a comprehensive
presentation into the trending patterns of various golf course upgrades by
other clubs, as well as problems faced by our current aging golf course, which
was last upgraded 17 years ago. By the end of the insightful session, the floor
unanimously welcomed the proposed change, even after being informed of
the estimated fees that may have to be levied upon members in order to ensure
the plans pull through. Dr Tan took to the floor once again before ending the
night’s session to share the progress of the hotel development project and
give insight into further plans for a

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL
Club Champions 2009
009 – Chia Chong Zheng
For the second year running, Chia
Chong Zheng and May Goh defy
the typical description of golf being
a gentleman’s game. Seventeen-year
old Chong Zheng and petite May once
again scrambled the golf denomination
when they beat other players to defend
their Club Championship, each with
a massive nine-strokes difference from
their leading opponents.
We took a few minutes of their time to
find out what drive these focused and
determined players.
BH: Congratulations on being crowned Club
Champ once again! How does it feel being the
youngest two-time Club Champion?
CCZ: Thank you! It definitely feels great to win
this title again, and being the youngest player to
win the club championship twice is beyond my
expectation.
BH: Tell us, how was this year’s Competition
different from last year’s?
CCZ: Well, just by looking at the scores this
year, the club championship has taken a
big step to reach another notch higher! The
competition within me as well as my fellow
competitors was immense and this definitely
bodes well for the years to come.
BH: Any particular pressure to perform “up to
expectation” and win the crown? How did you
cope with it?
CCZ: I had immense pressure from my friends
and some fellow competitors. They told me:
“This title is yours for sure! No one can take
this away from you! “I humbly took in their
comments. But I tried my best to remain
focused and managed to stick to my game
plan.
BH: So share with us, what was your game
plan?
CCZ: I feel that statistics is a very important
aspect in golf. Statistics meaning the number
of greens and fairways in regulation hit during
a round. Hence, my main game plan was to hit
most of the fairways, which then gave me the
chance to hit the green in regulation for a good
chance for a birdie, or at worst a 3-putt bogey.
This game plan helped me to remain focused
when it comes to the tee shot and that gave me
the advantage over my opponents.
BH: Tell us! Did you also think that “Ah! This
one’s mine!” for the Club Championship, or that
you’ll score this for sure?
CCZ: Yes, at times this thought flashes through
my mind before and during the round. However,
having lost a competition due to complacency
before, I remembered those incidents. Thus,
18
jurong country club
Chia Chong Zheng
I told myself not to be over-confident and
complacent, do not be too satisfied, and to
keep pushing to play even better.
BH: You were also a top-favourite to win in
the HSBC Youth Challenge, leading on the
first day, but lost on count-back. Any take on
that?
CCZ: Well, I did my best on the last day, but
Joshua Ho (the winner of that event) played
exceptionally well that day. Although countbacks aren’t the nicest of ways to determine
the winner, I’ll accept it and take the positives
out of the 2-day event!
What his flight mates thought of his game?
Jimmy Goh:
Chong Zheng

has well-rounded
skills and very

BH: After Edwin Pereira, you are the only
16-year old to win the Club Championship
twice in a row in almost 30 years. Any advise
to younger golfers who aspire to be in your
spot one day?
Leon See:

Club Champions 2009 – May Goh
BH: Congratulations on being crowned Club Champ once again! How does it feel being the twotime Club Champion?
MG: Elated! I want to thank God for being my pillar of strength, my coach for his support and last
but not least my good friends for their encouragement and love.
BH: What have you been doing to keep yourself in top form for the Club Championship?
MG: I focused on my short game this year especially on my chipping and putting. I trained hard
on my irons so that I can have higher percentage of green regulations.
BH: You are a regular on the course. Did you find this year’s Competition different from last
year’s? What’s better and what’s worse?
MG: Yes, last year, we played off the silver tee and unless you are a long hitter, green
regulations is an issue. This year we played off the Red tee, which is shorter but a good drive
is needed. The second shot is crucial – it has to be precise and accurate in order to be put on
regulations. For some holes, I used my 3 Wood instead to tee off so that I could place my ball in
play. And the weather for the first two days were exceptionally “hot”, it really drained you when
you need to stay focused on your game. Even then, I thoroughly enjoyed the competition and the
company.
BH: Any particular pressure to perform “up to
expectation” and win the crown? If yes, from
whom and how did you cope with it?
MG: Well, it is natural for one to feel pressured
in any competitions, especially so when you
are defending the title. Bob Rotella’s book “Golf
is a Game of Confidence”, taught me to stay
patient and accept the imperfect shots and
move on to the next hole. I have learnt to keep
my mental sound and strong through each
round, put aside all the “expectations” and just
enjoy each round as it comes.
BH: You met 8-time winner Irene Tan again in
this year’s Competition… any thoughts?
MG: I have always enjoyed playing golf with
Irene. Besides, it is the course that we are
challenging and not any individual.
May Goh
BH: Although you had a bad day on the 2nd round where you lost to Irene by 5 strokes, you
were still leading by 6 strokes overall. Share your thoughts on how it felt and what kept you
going?
MG: It was a very hot and humid Saturday for the 2nd round… the heat was utterly unbearable
and I could feel the sun “burning” my skin!!! It was difficult to stay focused throughout the game.
My tempo was very fast and I couldn’t sink in putts… I tried to stay calm and patient at the green,
and kept drinking water to avoid dehydration.
BH: On the final day, you returned in top form and left Irene behind by a total of 9 strokes
overall… any reflections?
MG: I woke up in the morning feeling very relaxed and filled with confidence, and I put day two
behind me. I thank God that the weather was very nice on Sunday… especially after the rain. I
stayed focus and smiled even when I had a bad shot and I was able to sink in more putts and
thus keep my score low.
BH: So how do you stay relaxed?
MG: (laughs) By singing! It is one of the formulas I often use whenever I feel unsettled to calm
myself down! I have learnt over time to take one shot at a time and count your strokes only
after you finish your game. In addition, you must trust your swing and keep your swing thoughts
simple. Follow your game plan. The key factor to playing good golf is CONFIDENCE!

Golden Boys and Girls
At the recent “Fun in the Sun” Swim Meet hosted at The Pines on Sunday
31 May, a group of our junior swimmers flew the club flag high when
they returned with 18 Gold medals for Jurong Country Club.
This is only the second year running that our Jurong swimmers entered the
Meet and we are honoured that our boys and girls did us proud. Here’s a
little insight into what these little dynamos thought about their win.
Aaron Siow (10)
I’m overjoyed! This is
my first time winning
an event and it makes
me happy to finally get
a trophy! I hope to win
first place for my next
individual event… but I
need to work hard on my
butterfly stroke…
Catherine Loy (9)
I want to win more medals for
the September AIMS! Training
and focus helped me win this
event… I’ll double up for the
next. I like winning because
it makes me feel like I am a
special swimmer. My mantra?
Never give up!
Huang Kangsheng Carson (13)
I like to win because it shows that at
least I’m getting something out of my
training. I want to thank my coach for
pushing me on and on and on during
training, and that has been what
helped me in adding more medals
to my shelf! Training and focus is
really important in any competition
and I hope that at the next event, I’ll
win another award or two!
Goh Wei Jie (14)
I enjoy competitive
swimming as much
as I enjoy living! So
my aim is to win the
next event! I believe my
endurance helped me
win!
Amanda Baey (13)
My parents and friends, plus
training and focus of course,
helped me win. To me, winning
is a reward for my hard work…
but I also enjoy Badminton!
Ong Guan Lin (11)
Focus and hard work helped me
win… For my next event, I want
to break my Personal Best for
backstroke! Swimming is to
me like an exam, challenging
all the difficult questions (eg
personal best time)!
FROM THE COACH
So, Coach Leonard, the guy who made
it all possible! This is only the Club’s
second time joining the competition,
what did you think of the team’s chances
BEFORE the event?
I was more concern about the process of
getting the team ready for the swim meet
than winning it. When we won 18 out of
the 22 events, I was pleasantly surprised!
When JCC was crowned the overall
winner, what was your reaction?
My first reaction was surprise, but the
kids had really done the club proud! It
was also their hard work from all the
hours of training.
What did you think worked for this
year’s competition that was missing from
last year’s?
We were better prepared and the kids
were mentally ready compared to last
year. They believed they would do better
this year…
20
Who did you think were the brightest
stars of the competition?
Catherine Loy, Goh Wei Jie, Ong Guan
Lin, Amanda Baey, Malcolm Baey
What are your hopes for the swim team?
To be able to have a finalist in next year’s
national swim meet.
What kind of training regime did the
team go through?
Technical, Tactical, Mental
With this win, will you be putting them
through a more strenuous training
programme with higher expectations?
I will plan according to their ability and
take it one step at a time, as I would not
want the kids to lose interest at this stage
of their “swimming career”. Let us build
a stronger swim team for the future and
increase the participation rate of the
“Learn to Swim” program.

GOLF RULES 101
Pace Of Play
Help prevent slow play by practicing the tips below:
1 Plan your shot while walking to your ball or while others are playing.
2 Line up your putt when others are putting.
3 Be ready to play when it is your turn.
4 Walk briskly between shots.
5 Walk directly to your golf ball; don’t follow others unless assisting in a

search.
If riding, take several clubs with you to your ball so you won’t have to
walk back to the cart.
Don’t step off yardarge for every single golf shot; develop an “eye” for
distance.
Be efficient with pre-shot routine.
Take quick practice swing.
Play a provisional ball if you think the original might be lost outside a
water hazard or out of bounds.
Leave your clubs on the side of the putting green towards the next tee.
Exit putting green promptly after holing out.
Unless experienced, play the standard tees, not the championship tees.
Thought Of The
Month
Golf is a gentleman’s game, so even
when we lose our balls on the green,
let’s not allow that to affect our
temperaments and make us lose our
heads. Remember, your game can
be affected by the carelessness of
the players before you, and similarly
the enjoyment of the players after
you can be affected by your lack of
consideration.

Club Championship Special
Chong Zheng Retains Title
Chia Chong Zheng retained the Club Championship, outscoring his rivals over
four days of competition. Chong Zheng was again the runaway winner by a
massive nine strokes, the same margin he scored over the runner-up last year.
His four-round aggregate score of gross 293 was also very much improved from
his winning score of 305 last year.
Jesse Elliot Yap, who finished third last year, put up a fine display over four
rounds that earned him the second spot. His aggregate total of 302 was eleven
strokes better than Leon See in third place. Leon’s four-day total gross 313, was
seven strokes better than the next in line.

May Reigns Queen Again
Reigning ladies’ champion May Goh proved again that she is the one to beat
when she overcame the challenge of 8 top lady golfers Jurong currently had
to offer. It was May’s first day’s score of gross 80 that shot her into the lead
which she held on till the end of the championship. Her winning gross of
253 was nine strokes better than 8-time champion Irene Tan, who had to play
bridesmaid for the third year running.
In the scramble for the runner-up spot, Irene scored a three-day aggregate of
262, which was just enough to nudge Mill Lim off by a single stroke.

Matchplay Championship
Chong Zheng Scores A Double
Chia Chong Zheng won both the Club Championship and the Matchplay
Championship title last year, a double win for the very first time. This year, the 17
year old had already secured the Club Championship in June and, in the Matchplay
Championship for Men held on 18, 19, 25 and 26 July, as the top qualifier, he proved
once again that he was simply the best by
beating the rest to complete his second double
in as many years.
In the knockout rounds, he beat Joe Pereira
by going seven up with five holes to play in
the quarterfinal. In the semifinal, he overcame
Stanley Ang by four and three. It was in the final
that he proved his mettle. After being two holes
down with eight holes to go in the match against
2006 winner Leon See, Chong Zheng took the
next five holes to go two holes clear which he
held on to win on the 17th green.
Leon, who was the second best qualifier, had
reached the final by beating Jimmy Goh in the
quarterfinal by three and one, and sent Gene Kwek packing by winning one up in the
semi-final.

Matchplay Championship
May Hits Three In A Row
Two-time Champion May Goh was back to complete a hat trick of consecutive
wins in an event she had completely dominated since 2007. As soon as the
draw for the knockout stage of the competition was finalised, it looked quite
unlikely that new names would be inscribed onto the Ladies’ Matchplay
Championship Trophy.
At this year’s Matchplay Championship for Ladies held on 18, 19, 25 and 26
July, May was the second best qualifier with eventual runner-up Jang Sang Yi
heading the list of qualifiers. In fact with both players reaching the final, it was
a repeat of the 2007 final in which May had triumphed by six and five.
The final was a closer affair with Sang Yi not giving an inch, taking May right
through the full 18 holes and the game into extra holes. It was, however, on the
first extra hole that the tie was broken when May managed a par with Sang Yi
struggling for a bogey.

Richard and Etty Ruswita
Come Out Tops
Richard Ling (24) played some scintillating golf and came out
on top of the Men’s division during the Captains’ Day golf event
held on 11 July. In fact, it was a runaway win for Richard, who
amassed 49 stableford points, as four of his closest challengers
managed only 37 points.
Of the foursome, Teru Kawai (10) had the best score based on
a countback and deservedly took second place while
Tan Swee Teck (24) edged out Vincent Tan (14) for
third place. Vincent’s score was good enough for
fourth place while Naranjan Singh took home the
fifth prize.
Captain &
Richard Ling
Scores in the ladies’ division were fairly close. Etty
Ruswita Ochiai (16) returned with 40 stableford
points for her victory. Junior golfer Gwendolyn Wee
(27) won the second prize, a point behind while
another junior Rebecca De Foe (34) took third spot
on countback from Soodendra (36) when both
returned with 36 points.
Ladies’ Captain &

Captain Bobby Wee contributed all the 50 lucky draw prizes for
the event plus 6 lucky draw prizes for GAs, while Lady Captain
Loh Ju Fern contributed prizes for the golf competition. Angelia

From Laps To Loops
The weekend of 24 to 27 June witnessed a mass assortment of 24 swimmers
aged between 8 and 16 lugging all types of sleeping bags and other personal
artillery as they prepared for a 3D4N Swim Camp at none other than JCC’s
Eugenia Room.
Scoff not at the idea! The Eugenia Room was only a doorway to fun and exciting
places. From the parquet-lined Eugenia, the campers were ported to Tampines
SAFRA for exciting archery, bowling and more. So our water babes had the
opportunity to learn more about other sports, as well as glean (otherwise
unavailable) swimmingg tips
p and more from Coach Leonard.
The success of our annual swim
camp is spurring us to organise
more gatherings in future for our
sportsmen and women of the

Squash Friendly With Warren
Our senior squash team
visited the Warren Golf And

a round of friendly matches.
Both sides put up eight
players each to compete in
this competition. Though
we were playing away, our
players fought hard as they
ran, puffed and tumbled
their way through these
gruelling matches against
our very tough host. Both
sides fought to a 4-4 draw,
with Warren complimenting
JCC’S oldest player, 69-year
old Chow Hoi Sung for his
sportsmanship.
The long and hard fought
matches were well appreciated by all the players as it provided excellent
workout for all the participants during the hot afternoon. Our host later treated
players to
o a ssumptuous buffet and hopes were exchanged that when we invite
Warren to JCC for a return

Absolutely Korean!
Glorious Korean food and heart-pumping entertainment ruled the Golfers’
Terrace on Saturday, 25 July as it was transformed to fit the night’s Korean theme.
From as early as 5pm, luscious smells of Korean delicacies wafted in from the
Terrace tempting guests to satisfy their rumbling tummies as soon as possible.
This of course could not drown out the heart-thumping beat of Korean drums
as one and all geared to welcome the Ambassador of Korea to Singapore, His
Excellency Kim Joong-Keun. Rousing entertainment kicked off with song and
dance performances to top Korean hits. It did not matter that we could not fly
in the Wondergirls – one of our own girl groups from a Singapore-based dance
academy roused the crowd just as wonderfully. A “Samulnori” dance troupe was
even specially flown in to invoke blessings and good luck for the audience and
guests were treated to a wonderful surprise when Mediacorp
celebrity Mrs Jing Ying Ji stepped on to the stage in a colourful
traditional Hanbok! Mrs Jing, who has made Singapore her
home for the last 30 years, gave an absolutely delightful Korean
drum performance, and even shared anecdotes on how she
adjusted to life in Singapore in the early days and met and fell
in love with her husband.
We had an absolutely glorious night and are certain
that many wished the night would never end! To
those who missed our fun and excitement, join us
next year for an even bigger better Korean Fiesta!
