A skeleton found beneath a car park in Leicester in 2012
was eventually identified as Richard III, sparking renewed
interest in the life, death and legacy of someone known
most broadly as Shakespeare’s most notorious villain. It was
a moment when history, literature and science intersected,
a tension that provided a foundation for this production.
The Almeida’s space welcomes the audience and
performers into the same room with a rare intimacy. The
opportunity to pair this space with an actor like Ralph
Fiennes, who emanates the muscularity and steel of
immeasurable experience, and is as known for the intensity
of his work on screen, was compelling.
We are delighted to share this production of Richard III
worldwide through our first Almeida Live cinema broadcast
with Illuminations Media and Picturehouse Entertainment,
and in encore international screenings throughout the
summer.
