From the Vicarage…
At the beginning of May around one hundred and fifty Churchwardens from
all the churches around Halstead and Braintree gathered at St. John's,
Finchingfield, for their annual Licensing Service, led by the Archdeacon of
Stansted. There is a tradition of offering hospitality before the service begins,
however, laying on a decent buffet in a Church for such a large number of
people is quite a challenge and so I would like to take this opportunity to say a
big thank you to all those from the four churches in this benefice who
provided lots of delicious food and wine for the occasion. There wasn't much
left over, which speaks volumes!
This month St. John the Evangelist Church, Cornish Hall End will be
joining in with the celebrations for the Queen's ninetieth birthday. On
Saturday 11th June Hadstock Silver Band will be performing in the grounds of
the Church from 3.00-5.00pm. Tea and cakes will be available, and if anyone
would like to contribute a cake or raffle prize, please contact Liz Hicks (01440
730565).
The recent Church Fete in aid of St. Mary's, Wethersfield, was a great
success, with something of interest for all ages. The sun shone, lots of people
came along and enjoyed themselves in the lovely garden at Wethersfield Hall,
at the kind invitation of Ben and Leonora Walmsley. Our thanks go to Ben
and his hard-working team of helpers for organizing such a happy village
event. St. Mary's will be holding a Flower Festival during the weekend of
18th-19th June. The Hedingham Singers will be giving a concert in the Church
on Saturday 18th June at 7.30pm and there will be "Songs of Praise" at
6.00pm on Sunday 19th June.
On 23rd June voters across the United Kingdom will decide on whether or
not we continue to be part of the European Union. Justin Welby, the
Archbishop of Canterbury, recently said that there is no "correct" Christian
view about the referendum: “My hope and prayer is that we have a really
visionary debate about what our country looks like.” There will be a service
of prayer and reflection at Chelmsford Cathedral on Thursday 16th June at
8.00pm (organized by Churches Together in Essex and East London), and the
Church of England has issued the following prayer as the referendum
approaches:
"God of truth, give us grace to debate the issues in this referendum with
honesty and openness. Give generosity to those who seek to form opinion
and discernment to those who vote, that our nation may prosper and that
with all the peoples of Europe we may work for peace and the common
good; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."
Yours ever,
Colin Wilson (Revd.)
Churchwarden's Notes
Just looking back to last Sunday I would like to say a huge Thank you
to Ben and Leonora Walmsley for hosting the Church Fête in their
lovely gardens I know there was much planning and preparation
involved but it was certainly worth it. Lots have said how nice it was to
have an "Old Fashioned Fête"
Now to June's activities. As I mentioned last month, we are holding our
Flower Festival on the 18th and 19th of June, a week earlier than usual,
to take in the Concert arranged by the" Hedingham Singers". The choir
give their performances in Churches and various organisations to help
raise funds for specific needs. They are helping us with the roof.( See
photo of the state of the Nave roof at present!) Their program is light
classical and songs from shows. Tickets £10 are now available at the
Post Office in Wethersfield, or from Sarah Pilgrim, Eve Newell or on
the door. Do come along it should be a very pleasant evening’s
entertainment, and a chance to have a look at the flowers.
Each year many of you are kind enough to make donations towards the
flowers in memory of a special person or to celebrate a special
occasion; we hope you will feel able to support the Festival again this
year. Cheques should be made payable to Wethersfield PCC, or
donations in cash can be given to Sarah or me. If you are a tax payer
please use one of our Gift Aid envelopes, this will enable our treasurer
to reclaim tax and boost your donation by 25%.
We have been running the Flower Festival since 2005 and in that time
have raised over £8500 for the Church - we could not have done that
without your help. Thank you very much.
The Church will be open Saturday and Sunday afternoons 2pm to 5pm
Concert Saturday evening 7 for7.30
Sunday evening “Songs of Praise” at 6 o'clock.
On Saturday June 11th, members of the Village hall Committee are
arranging a Tea Dance in the Village Hall in the afternoon and a
Community Quiz in the evening in celebration of Her Majesty's 90th
birthday please look out for posters advertising these events. Come and
support your Village Hall.
A little PS to finish.
What children say in Church!
Grandson Thomas asked why he didn't get a communion wafer."Why
don't I get a white chocolate button, I know about God too!"

St George’s Day Supper
On the evening of 23 April, over 120 guests were served dinner in
Wethersfield Village Hall by a team led by Liz Townrow and Gwenda
Hall. The evening got off to a dramatic start when St George and his
entourage entered the hall!
Before dinner we held a round of ‘Heads or Tails’, a game where
everyone stands up and places their hands on either their head or tail, a
coin is tossed and those who have matched the result remain standing.
Around 50% of people sit back down after every round, so we rapidly
found a winner.
There was a choice of
venison – generously
supplied by Duncan Smith
– or chicken for main
course and a wide variety
of delicious puddings
made by an extended
network of helpers.
We enjoyed a table quiz on
the theme of England, with
many of the tables scoring
very highly.
The evening was rounded
off over a selection of
cheeses and the chance to
chat to friends on other
tables, whilst admiring the
flowers kindly donated by Kellie-Ann.
The evening raised just over £2000 which will go towards maintaining
and improving the fabric of St Mary Magdalene Church in Wethersfield.

Wethersfield Local History Group
The next meeting will be on Thursday June 9th. The
evening will focus on the Airbase and will be in two parts.
Prof. Vernon Williams from Texas will talk about how the
American forces interacted with local communities during
World War II. Prof. William’s uncle was the rear gunner
who was killed when the aircraft crashed in Shalford, so
he has a special interest in Wethersfield. During his stay
in Wethersfield, he and his group of students will be
interviewing local people who have memories of the
American forces stationed here during the War.
In the second half of the evening, Ross Stewart will update us on the museum project at the Base and also let us
know of any progress in the search for the missing airman
from Wethersfield who was the ‘first to fall’.
As usual, the meeting will be held at the Pavilion,
Hedingham Road, at 8.00pm. £2 at the door, to include
refreshments. All welcome.
WW1 Centenary Bellringing
On May 25th a Quarter Peal of 1260 Plain Bob Minor was rung - the
latest in our series to commemorate those of our parish who lost their
lives in the Great War. The parishioner remembered on this occasion
was Private Cecil Stockbridge, aged 19, of the London Regiment. He
served in the 1st/20th Battalion, his body was never found and he is
commemorated on the Walls to the Missing at the Arras Memorial in
France.
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM
