GREETING FROM ACSS PRESIDENT
Happy
New Year!
It’s hard to
believe but,
the new year
marks the
half way point of the
school year. We have
exciting things to look
forward to in 2014. We
hope you will be part of
the many happenings at
Roncalli.
January 26-February 1
is Catholic Schools
Week. The theme is
Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service. Bishop
Paul Swain will again
join us on Wednesday,
January 29 for the All
School Liturgy, beginning
at 1:30 p.m. in the RHS
gymnasium. Catholic
Schools Week will be
especially memorable for
us as we focus on the life
and legacy of our namesake, Angelo Roncalli.
On Sunday, April 27
Blessed John XXIII
(Angelo Roncalli) and
Blessed John Paul II will
be canonized in ceremonies at the Vatican. We
are planning a series of
events throughout the year
to recognize this special
event, including rededication of the RHS building
in September. The Roncalli All-School Reunion
is June 13-15, with a full
weekend of activities
planned. Bishop Swain
will again be joining us to
celebrate the Sacred Liturgy on June 15. The canonization of Blessed John
XXIII and the 50th anniversary of RHS afford us
this unique point in history
to celebrate.
In January we will be
convening our first meeting of our new Wellness
Council. The Wellness
Council is a cross section
of educators, parents,
board members, food service professionals, students, business leaders and
health professionals. As a
requirement of the federal
lunch program, we will be
updating our current Wellness Policy. Thank you to
the following individuals
who have agreed to help
update the policy. Cari
Berner, Tim Baustian, Kim
Bot, Colette Carrels, Erin
Diebert, Terry Dosch,
Rachel Haigh-Blume, Eric
Lacher, Isaac Lien, Dona
Mangan, Erika McLeod,
Samantha Serr, Mark Stone
and Angel Vermillion.
If you have not been at
Roncalli Primary School
lately, please stop in to
check out the fresh and
colorful painting job that
was completed over Christmas break. Thank you to
Brenda Mitzel and her
many volunteers who
worked on this project.
Painting will continue
during the summer.
Students at Roncalli
Elementary School will
notice new computers in
their lab.

This should minimize the connectivity problems that have
been experienced recently. We
have minimal wireless connectivity at RES, therefore, a wired
lab is the most practical and
cost effective solution.
The Buildings and Grounds
Committee of the Board has
been meeting monthly to review
the capital outlay plan and the
next phase of the Revitalizing
Roncalli Campaign. The Fine
Arts Wing, bathrooms and
changing rooms are the priorities. You will be hearing more
about this as we progress into
2014.
Thank you to everyone who
MATH COUNTS
completed the on-line satisfaction survey. We received
responses from over 100 people. The results are on page 5
of this newsletter.
Mathcounts competition
was held Wednesday, December 11 at Roncalli with eight
area schools present for 7th
and 8th grade.
Thank you to everyone who
remembered teachers and staff
during the holiday season with
gifts, food and most importantly prayers. It was all
greatly appreciated and does
not go unnoticed. This ministry would not be possible without the time, talent and treasure
of so many faithful and faithfilled people.
Our teams both took 1st
place. 8th grade team members were Colton Hellwig,
Austin Cihak, Lucas Goetz,
and Matthew Sperry. 7th
grade team members were
Joseph Goetz, Lucas
Schaefbauer, Audrey Cihak
and Allison Dix. Way to go
Cavaliers. We have been having an excellent season
placing in the top places in
every meet in which we have
competed.

at school!

CALLING THE CLASS OF 2027!
On January 28, Roncalli will host an Open House at 5:30pm at Roncalli Primary School for parents of children who will be ready for kindergarten this fall. The open house will describe our program and answer questions parents may have about their child’s readiness for kindergarten. Childcare
will be provided.
If you know someone we should invite to the open house, please give us their name and address,
and we'll invite them. If you want, we will tell them you recommended them. Remember that we offer
a "bounty" for students that our current families bring to Roncalli. If a family enrolls with Roncalli
and indicates on their registration form that you referred them, we'll credit your tuition account $100
for each student enrolled.
CAVALIER CAMPAIGN SUPPORTS RONCALLI & TUITION
Please support the Cavalier Campaign Annual Fund, which helps fund key operational needs at
Roncalli: teacher salaries, tuition assistance, and educational technology.
We need the Cavalier Campaign as well as our other fundraising resources—including Home and
School, Booster Club, the Roncalli Ball, the Roncalli Foundation, Nearly New, Cavalier Gift Cards,
and others—because tuition revenue does not cover the cost of education. The simple average cost per
student at Roncalli is $6,700 (dividing budget by enrollment). On average, tuition accounts for a little
under 50%. We receive significant support from Sacred Heart and St. Mary’s parishes and from the
other fundraising sources mentioned.
Because of all this fundraising support, tuition at Roncalli is less than tuition at other private schools
in Aberdeen and South Dakota. Average tuition at Roncalli is $550 less than Sioux Falls Catholic
Schools and $1,350 less than Rapid City Catholic Schools.
Please make a gift to the Cavalier Campaign. Your support helps us make up the funding gap, and it
is a tax-deductible way to keep tuition more affordable. Thanks for your support!

"As believers, how can
we fail to see that abortion, euthanasia and assisted suicide are a terrible rejection of God's gift
of life and love? And as
believers, how can we fail
to feel the duty to surround the sick and those
in distress with the
warmth of our affection
and the support that will
help them always to embrace life?”
