Market Analysis: Charleston, SC
Ten years ago, “Chucktown” had a single Country station
– iHeartMedia’s WEZL, which averaged a 7.7 share according
to Nielsen Audio. In 2008, Cumulus added WIWF and average shares grew to 10.2 for the format. Three years later, Apex
added a third Country station – WCKN. Since then, listening has
continued to increase to a three-station average of 13.0 shares as
of Fall 2014. Country Aircheck takes a closer look at the market
and how this Country power trio competes in a race that seems to
get tighter with every book.
WEZL PD Brian Cleary says there
are several reasons for increased Country
listening, including the natural growth in the
popularity of the format. “Part of it, too, is that
the population here grew a little more than
8% since 2010,” he says. “Some of the people
who’ve come into the market have brought
a country sensibility; they’re fans. With the

who like country has grown as well.”
Sand Tunes: When WCKN launched in 2011, its focus was
more of a classic/hit current blend. An August 2013 rebranding
as “New Country, Kickin’ 92.5” brought its music more in line
with WEZL’s “New Country for the Lowcountry” and WIWF’s
“Nash FM 96.9.” A seven-day Mediabase analysis of Current/
Recurrent/Gold percentages for each station shows WEZL at
46/32/22, WIWF at 44/30/26 and WCKN at 47/28/26. On
average, songs played on all three stations are from 2012 or
newer, and while their currents lists look pretty similar, only two
songs make the top five on all three (5/7-13): Keith Urban f/
Eric Church with “Raise ‘Em Up” and Tyler Farr’s “A Guy Walks
Into A Bar.”

The story begins two years ago when singer/songwriter Trevor
Rosen told his co-publishers – Wrensong/Reynsong’s Ree Guyer
Buchanan and SmackSongs’ Shane McAnally and Michael
McAnally Baum – he’d formed a band. McAnally produced a
few songs and the trio pitched Old Dominion to the majors. “Everybody passed,” says Buchanan. “We looked at each other and
said, ‘We have these sides – let’s just keep going.’ They’d been
playing a lot of club dates and we’d seen the reaction. Fans were
loving it.”
Buchanan, McAnally and Baum created ReeSmack and turned
to Sirius/XM’s John Marks in January 2014. Marks loved what
he heard and gave the group’s “Dirt On A Road” some spins.
According to Buchanan, reaction was immediate. “We had haters,
we had lovers,” she says. “And right away we started selling. It
sold about 25,000 digital downloads in two months.”
When those early figures still failed to attract major label
attention, “we looked at each other again and said, ’Let’s just
keep going,’” says Buchanan. “We decided to form a bigger
team.” That team, comprised of Thirty Tigers, Morris Artist Mgt.’s
Clint Higham, publicist Ebie McFarland and then-indie promoter Pam Newman (now in-house at Thirty Tigers) met weekly
to strategize and build OD’s foundation. Marks requested a second single and “Shut Me Up” had similar satellite radio success.
Newman began working terrestrial radio last July, getting about
20 stations on board. ReeSmack released the band’s EP in September and Marks requested a third single.
“When we released ’Break Up With Him’ in October it was
apparent right away that it was going to be the biggest single,
because we started selling between 4,000 and 5,000 digital
downloads a week,” says Buchanan. “And that’s when we started
getting major label interest.”
Negotiations with RCA began last November and in March,
Old Dominion finalized their deal with the label. In addition to the
impressive sales the band was already generating, Buchanan says
the tipping point was the momentum OD’s team had spent two
years building.
“Artist development is now in the hands of publishers and
producers,” she says. “There aren’t very many major labels and
they’re so full with the acts they are already working. Now the
labels have the luxury of jumping on things that are actually
selling. It was happening with Old Dominion and they could see
that. The days of signing an act that has nothing going on – the
labels just don’t have time to do that. And we do have time.”
Buchanan says she, McAnally and Baum never intended to be a
record label; they were just trying to create an outlet for their writ-

ers [OD’s Matt Ramsey is also signed to SmackSongs]. “We are
the farm team,” she says. “Our goal was always to get a major
label deal for them. Because as a little independent, you still need
Country radio and all the terrestrial radio stations playing your
record. The majors do that the best.”
Having said that, she adds if the right project came along, she
would absolutely step back into the game with Thirty Tigers. “I’d
love to take an artist all the way with them,” says Buchanan. “A lot
of people dream about stuff but they don’t actually put in the hard
work that goes with it. This team put in the work and the time. My
whole philosophy in anything is, just do something – and something will happen. And this was a beautiful example.”

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE
1. Elvis: When I was younger my dad
had an Elvis cassette that we would play
non-stop. We had lots of long car rides
singing Elvis. My dad has an incredible
voice. Any vocal talent I have comes
from him. I grew up watching him and
trying hard to sing just like he did – and
singing Elvis was the main way to do it.
2. Marty Robbins/Cool Water: My
grandpa is a great storyteller. He would

recite that song as if he was completely
parched in the desert. We’d all just die
laughing. I remember the day I finally heard the song. I was so
confused because I thought it should’ve sounded just like my
grandpa told the story. Marty Robbins’ music is so vibey; he was
such a crooner.
3. Dixie Chicks: I was obsessed with their albums in high
school. Their harmonies, Natalie’s voice and that songwriting
style were a huge influence on me.
4. Indigo Girls: I freaking love their harmonies. They were a
big influence too. You can hear that a lot in my music.
5. Bulgarian Women’s Choir/Ergen Deda: I grew up in a
choir. We sang in 14 languages so I grew up with a lot of world
music. Some of my favorite songs when I was younger were
Bulgarian Women’s Choir songs – things that no one else knew.

things you wouldn’t normally think you’d like.
Highly regarded music you’ve never heard: Rita Ora.
She’s so beautiful and I see her modeling but I don’t think I’ve
ever heard her sing. I’d love to hear what she does.
An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Adele.
I think she’s so good, but I didn’t understand the obsessiveness
and how successful she is worldwide.
Music you played incessantly: When I was little I would sing
the song “Love Potion No. 9” all the time. My parents had to
stop me.
Obscure or non-country music everyone should listen
to right now: People should listen to Sturgill Simpson’s
Metamodern Sounds in Country Music.
Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: One of the first
albums I bought was Ace of Base. I loved them.

Congrats to Tyler Farr, Norbert Nix, RJ Meacham,
David Friedman and the whole Columbia promotion staff
on landing this week’s No. 1 with “A Guy Walks Into A Bar.” The
gold-certified track is the first single from Farr’s current album
Suffer In Peace and his third chart-topper (“Redneck Crazy,”
“Whiskey In My Water”).
And kudos to Kris Lamb and the rest of the Dot promotion staff on securing 38 adds for Steven Tyler’s “Love Is Your
Name,” topping this week’s board.
Paisley Launches Crushin’ It Tour
Arista’s Brad Paisley opened the Crushin’ It World Tour at the
Susquehanna Bank Center in Philadelphia Friday (5/15) with help
from Capitol’s Mickey Guyton and Valory’s Justin Moore. CBS
Radio WXTU morning show producer Kevin Crockett was there
and shares some highlights.
“Mickey was great and it was actually her first big tour-type
show,” Crockett says. “She talked to [MD/afternooner] Razz beforehand and asked how many people to anticipate. He casually
told her there’d be about 18,000, so she gave him that look like,
‘Say what?’ But she’s crazy talented and Justin is worth the price

Lilbuddy Toons’ Wade Bowen puts an
industry spin on the artist interview:
The first time I heard myself on the
radio was in a commercial and I thought
that was the coolest thing ever. It was for a
show in Amarillo and they were playing my
song in the ad. I almost wrecked the van.
One time on a radio tour we
randomly walked into a station – we had
been visiting another station in the city and
the label guy said, “This guy won’t return
my calls so we’re just going to show up.” It
was awkward. We forced him to meet with
Wade Bowen
us, and it was kind of cool to watch him. He
listened to the record, actually pulled people into the conference room
and completely did a 180. That doesn’t happen a lot.
Hold My Beer: Vol. 1 (with Randy Rogers) is old school. It’s
fiddle and steel and as country as country music can get. It’s sad and
beer drinkin’ and depressing, the way I feel country music should be. And
it’s a record you can dance to. I grew up begging my parents to take me
Saturday nights to the dance halls that were family-oriented, not the bars,
and let me ask a girl to dance. It was so much pressure and so much
fun. This record encompasses all of that. It showcases our friendship that
we’ve had for years, it showcases our bands and our influences, which we
listen to while we drink beer after the show every night.
I do a lot of embarrassing things. The most embarrassing
thing ever involved this acoustic tour Randy and I do. I’m a Dallas
teams sports fan – Cowboys, Rangers Mavericks. The Mavericks won
the NBA Championship, and I had a little too much to drink, and we
were in San Antonio – Spurs country – playing for about 3,500 people and I accidentally said something about the Mavericks winning
the championship. There were 3,500 people booing me.
If I could be stuck anywhere other than home, I would love
to go back to and maybe live in Ireland. My wife and I are going
back in December. I just eat potatoes and stay drunk – that’s the
theory there. It’s an amazing place.

each one,” Crockett
says. “It was ourselves
and some winners for
three or four songs. It’s

running all over the place performing. It’s like you’re Norm from
Cheers just sitting there taking it all in.”
A warm, fuzzy and fun moment came during a band jam. “I
don’t know how many guitars he gave away, but there were a lot,”
Crocket promises. “One went to this little kid that he’d brought
onstage to play a round of Mario Kart on the massive video
board. They gave him a headset to protect his ears and the band
just jammed around him while he played the video game in front
of everyone. Here I am a 29-year-old man and I was jealous!”
“He closed with ‘Alcohol,’ his encore,” Crocket continues. “And
I’m pretty sure he opened with ‘River Bank.’ He’s won Entertainer
of the Year, so he gets it for sure. He’s relentless up there and it was

music, both new and familiar. His gold category plays 247 unique
titles to WEZL’s 206 and WIWF’s 211. WCKN has seven gold titles
that spin 10 times or more, while WIWF has only one that spins
that often, and WEZL doesn’t have any. “I have the ability to go out of
the box and play stuff that maybe they won’t,” Doll says. “I try to find
certain songs I know they’re not going to play and just play the gold
library that they don’t. A good example is ‘Raised On It’ by Sam Hunt.
It’s probably the most country-sounding song on that album and it’s
one of those I’m playing just to play.”
When it comes to quantity, WCKN plays more music – 353
titles on May 13 compared to WEZL’s 293 and WIWF’s 291. While
middays are the same on all three stations at 14 songs per hour,
WCKN plays more songs per hour than either of its competitors
during all other dayparts, with the biggest difference in mornings.
WCKN is at 12, with WEZL and WIWF playing seven and eight
songs per hour, respectively.
Doll says the biggest difference for his station is in the talent.
“We’re local,” he says. “[iHeartMedia and Cumulus] run great
radio stations, but where we’ve been able to hold our own is in
our ability to be 100% local. Everybody’s here.”
Both WEZL and WIWF have local talent in middays and
afternoons. In mornings, WCKN’s local host Andy Webb is up
against The Bobby Bones Show on WEZL and America’s Morning Show on WIWF. At night, WEZL has WMZQ/Washington’s
Michael J voicetracking, while WIWF airs Nash Nights Live.
Cleary thinks ‘EZL still has an edge. “We have a little bit of
the advantage with the heritage we have in the market,” he says.
“The WEZL’s been The WEZL for 35 years, so people get that. Not
that you should ever [take it for granted], but there’s more attention now paid to branding, particularly with everybody diving in
on the new country, so we’re making sure there’s a definite WEZL
element to every single thing we do. It may even be overdone that
way, but we’re all trying to carve that same piece out.”
And the elbow room is getting squeezed. WEZL’s P12+ lead
has averaged two to three shares over WIWF and WCKN, which
have consistently been within a share of each other. But Fall
2014 Nielsen Audio diary ratings have WEZL, WIWF and WCKN
showing a 5.4, 4.1 and 3.9, respectively. It’s the first time since
WCKN’s launch that the three stations have been within a share
and a half of one another. (Ed. Note: Requests for comment from
WIWF were not returned by press time.)
“Of course the competition’s tough every day,” says Doll. “The
content for the most part is king, and when you have guys like
(WEZL afternoon team) TJ & Ric across the street, who’ve been in
the market for 20 years and have a huge following, it’s definitely
a huge battle.”

Cleary says the other programmers are worthy competition. “It
pisses me off,” he jokes. “You’re talking about three stations that
have market grade signals, three quality companies, and whether
it’s Garret or Bill [West, WIWF’s PD], they’re not dummies. They
know what they’re doing. You’ve got to be on your A-game, and
that raises us all up because you know you can’t take the competition for granted. But it would be nicer if one of those other stations

New Country Aircheck/Mediabase Reporter Weights
These are the new weights for Country Aircheck/Mediabase Reporters and Activator reporters, based on audience estimates from the Fall 2014 Nielsen Audio ratings. Weights for stations in PPM markets use a three-month average of Oct.-Nov.-Dec. AQH Persons. The weights are calculated using
this formula: Market rank is multiplied by 10 and then added to the station’s AQH Persons. A station’s weight is determined by dividing the adjusted
AQHP by a number that is 10% of the leading Country station’s AQH (in this case WUSN/Chicago’s 26,130 adjusted AQHP and, for Activators, WFRE/
Frederick’s 9,630 adjusted AQHP.) This calculation assigns a weight for each panelist on a 1-10 scale. These new weights are effective with this week’s
Mediabase Country chart as printed in Country Aircheck.
