August Evangelist 2016
The Evangelist
August 2016
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?
You have made them
a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor.
(Psalm 8:3-5)

A Word from our Interim Rector
"Waiting for the Soul to Catch Up" (the title of an article
written by Terry Hershey in Trinity News, the magazine of
Trinity Church - St. Paul's Chapel in New York City) is a title
that caught my eye. This unusual title comes from a story
that the author quoted in which she told of an American
traveler on safari in Kenya. This traveler was loaded down
with maps, timetables, agendas. He had an enormous amount of supplies,
luggage and "essential stuff." He was delighted when on the first morning and
then the second and the third mornings they all awoke early, traveled fast and
went far into the bush. On the fourth morning, however, the porters refused to
move. The American was incensed and complained that this was a waste of
valuable time. He demanded to be told what was going on. The translator told
him that the porters were waiting for their souls to catch up with their bodies!
What a concept - waiting for our souls to catch up with our bodies.
We are still in the midst of the summer season and so it is a good time for us to
be conscious of giving our souls the chance to catch up with our bodies. We
often seem to live our lives at a frantic pace and that is true for people who are
retired as well. If you do an internet search, you will even find a large
assortment of book-a-minute books. The books take the important parts and
eliminate all that is not considered essential so that the book can be read in a
minute. Can you imagine that? How sad that we have let our lives get so very
busy that we need abbreviated books since we simply do not have the time for
anything else.
During the remainder of this summer, take some time to slow down, take some
time to review how you live your life. If you have a vacation planned during
these final weeks of summer, why not include some time to simply be, to let
your soul catch up with your body. If you have a few extra evenings at home
because of meetings that are cancelled for the summer, do the same. We all
need to take care of ourselves; we need to slow down, spending some quiet time
reflecting, letting our souls catch up with our bodies.
If you are a student returning to school, remember to take time to let your soul
catch up with your body. It is so easy to get overwhelmed with schoolwork.
Please be dedicated to getting your work complete while at the same time
being certain to take necessary time to rest. This applies to parents as well.
Our Search Committee has been working at a feverish pace. It is exciting work
but even they need to remember to take some time to slow down. If they are
overworked and stressed, then they might easily miss God's direction in
choosing a new rector for St. Andrew's.
Just a few short weeks ago Mary and Ron Piotrowski suffered the tragic
deaths of their daughter-in-law and her unborn child. They will grieve this
death for many, many months to come. My prayer for them is that they take
all of the time that they need to let their souls be nourished so that they might
find a way forward. Our gifts of sympathy cards and phone calls are all a way
to help them as they grieve. Mary was priest to so many at St. Andrew's and so
it is very understandable that you may feel a desire to provide care and
support for her. This is a difficult time but it is important to remember that the
Bishop is now pastor to Mary and Ron. He will find ways for them to receive
the support that they need. We can certainly help by keeping them in our
prayers.
Our lives this summer have been deeply touched by the violence, terror and
deaths throughout the world as well as in our country. Continuing to live our
lives at our frenetic pace it is possible to go from one act of terror to the next
without really comprehending what this is doing to our world, what this
continuing violence is doing to our souls. Please take some time to reflect and
pray asking God how you can best help to bring about peace and hope in the
lives of our community.
I hope that you will take some quiet time during these remaining weeks of
summer to allow your souls time to catch up with your bodies.
Blessings, Grayce
A Word from our Deacon
Recover, Rejoice!
Some of you know of my love and deep respect for the 12
Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. The study and "working"
of these steps has truly changed my life and has played a
crucial role in making me open to the transforming love of
Christ. I was participating in a Bible study with friends
from AA when I had my own personal spiritual transformation 21 years ago
that set me on the path I am on today.
The 12 Steps have been used to effect change in so many different areas of
life starting with addiction but also in areas of other dysfunction and
sometimes just as an agent of change. And it works! The 12 Steps were
originally formed by a group called The Oxford Group which was led by an
Ecumenical minister and based on the Biblical principles of acceptance, faith,
atonement, forgiveness and ministry to others. Sound familiar?
Richard Rohr wrote in his book, Breathing Under Water, "I believe that Jesus
and the Twelve Steps of A.A. are saying the same thing with a different
vocabulary:
We suffer to get well.
We surrender to win.
We die to live.
We give it away to keep it."
In this book, Richard Rohr explains the value and he uses the 12 Steps of AA
to address the changes taking place within us, our families, our churches and
our society. He teaches those who are unfamiliar with the steps and those who
tend to use the steps only when crisis hits, how to use them on a spiritual level
so that we can effect change in our churches and communities. I highly
recommend this book and would love to have a book study on it for those who
are interested.
At last year's AZ Episcopal Diocese Convention we talked about how to bring
12 Step meetings back into the church as a form of outreach. Now at St.
Andrew's we are inviting 12 Step groups to share our space. But we don't have
to limit ourselves to only hosting these groups. We can use the steps ourselves
to help us through this time of transition in our own church. For those who are
having a difficult time, these steps are a valuable tool for working through the
process. For those who don't feel any angst, the 12 Steps and Richard Rohr's
book are fabulous guidelines for how to reap the rewards of a healthy
community.
I invite you to take the first step:
"We admitted we were powerless over people, places and things, that our lives
had become unmanageable."
Or as we read in the book of Matthew,
"And when Jesus looked at the crowds, he felt sorry for them because they
were harassed and dejected, like sheep without a shepherd".
Come join me as we learn to be agents of love and transformation not only in
our own church but in our communities and in our rapidly changing world!
With much love and affection, your Deacon,
Deirdre
P.S. My current involvement with 12 Step Recovery is with Compulsive Eaters
Anonymous-Honesty, Open-mindedness & Willingness, or CEAHOW (pronounced "see how"). This is a program of weight loss and
management. We meet at 9:30 am on Saturday mornings in the Parish Hall at
St. Andrew's. The only requirement for attendance is a desire to lose weight.
Youth News from
Julie Williams
Well, it has happened again...summer has flown by and
we are ready to get back to school on August 3rd. Each year
it seems to go quicker and quicker or maybe all the kids are
just growing up faster! We've had a fun summer of family
trips, Chapel Rock Camp, and anticipating the start of a new
school year. We had Sunday School twice over the summer
and are planning to start Sunday School again every
Sunday beginning August 7th.
Once again, I would like to say THANK YOU ALL for helping the kids reach
their goal of being able to attend a week of summer camp. Josie H., Josie W.,
Analiz, and Angeleah all attended camp. Each of them enjoyed meeting new
friends and reconnecting with old ones at Chapel Rock. All of the girls returned
home eager to go back next summer.
Happy Summer to all!
Love & Blessings,
Julie Williams
Health news
As I reflect back on my experience this July at Camp 60's
More or Less, I find it hard to pick just one aspect of camp
that was my favorite. It wasn't just the programs around
the theme "Balancing Physical, Mental and Spiritual
Health" although they were very informative and the
presenters gave us much to think about and new skills to
practice. It wasn't just the music although it was a pleasure
to listen the choir perform and participate in the Holden Prayer Service. It
wasn't just the laughter generated by the performers in the Talent Show
although we all felt happy and relaxed afterward. It wasn't just the delicious
food prepared on site and served by people who enjoy what they do. And it
wasn't just the opportunity to participate in the morning and evening worship
services that joined us by our beliefs. It was all of the above and 54 strangers
from around the state coming together to share the experience and leaving at
the end of camp with new ideas and new friends. This was my fifth summer
camp. And it just keeps getting better. I am already planning to go in July
2017. I hope some of you will join me!

are, we will finalize our schedule. Meanwhile, we plan to
hold our Orientation for prospective volunteers on
Thursday morning, September 15th. The exact time has not
been decided but all the details about Orientation will be posted in The Weekly
in late August.

Warden, Irene Croft, Phillip Valance, Julie Williams, Deirdre Moulinier, William Crowley
and Linda Rachel, Recorder
Absent: Jeannette Sasmor, Margaret Kelley, Peg MacMillan, Gary Livermont, Treasurer
Eucharist: Grayce Rowe; Linda Rachel - Devotional Reading.
Called to Order: Grayce Rowe.
Old Business:
Vestry Minutes of May 12, 2016: Phil Valence motioned for approval, Monte MacConnell
seconded. Minutes approved and accepted as amended.
Update: Windows - Monte MacConnell: Glazing- Monte is still pursuing optimal vendors
to provide the glazing work discussed in May. Window Washing: following general
discussion, Linda Rachel moved to have the windows washed twice a year. Monte seconded
this motion. The motion was approved with the twice yearly schedule to be determined at a
later date. John Haney's "Window Works" to be the vendor.
Signage: Don Harr bought lumber for new roadside signage on 89A. The work is in
process.
Hearing Aids: Most hearing aids are not working properly. Monte has no information
regarding maintenance of these aids. Grayce and Phil suggested Shirley may have this
information.
Action Item - Monte to follow-up.
Telephone/Internet - Linda Rachel: Objective (multiple voice mail & upgraded Internet
bandwidth/speed). Following much follow up with current telephone/internet providers it
was determined they either cannot provide the upgrades we desire or are cost
prohibitive. We are NO LONGER under contract with Century Link. There are NO early
termination fees. The Suddenlink proposal appears to offer the desired upgrades while
saving money. There was general discussion regarding our contract with Century Link and
the possibility of being part of a Diocese wide master contract. It was suggested the Canon
for Communication could provide the answer. Monte MacConnell moved that contingent
upon the answer from the Diocese we proceed with Suddenlink. Jim Hose seconded the
motion. The motion carried and was approved.
Action Item: Linda Rachel to follow up.
New Business:
New Vestry Member: Jim Hose introduced William Crowley as the nominee to replace
Carolyn Stillman's position. Monte MacConnell made a motion to accept his
nomination. Linda Rachel seconded the motion. Motion carried and was approved.
Treasurer's Report: Deferred until the July meeting. Treasurer on vacation.
Finance Report- Phil Valance: Phil stated the finance committee was making good
progress on the manual. He further advised the vestry of the preliminary budget schedule
and it was agreed this would be the focus of the next Vestry meeting on July 28th at 2:00
p.m.
Rector's Report - Grayce Rowe:
1.
The Rector and Senior Warden are now meeting no less than once a month and find
communication is essential.
2. It was suggested the Senior and Junior Warden's meet regularly as well.
Search Committee Report - Jim Hose:
1.
Things are happening fast. Going forward we will be included in emails. The job
posting is up on the website
2. Still working on Parish Profile.
3. The website is getting updated and in a couple of days the information will be
available locally.
4. The Search Committee is working with Brian Belanger to develop Interview Questions.
General Discussion:
1.
Outreach - Greg Noyes is the coordinator for the 12 step group.
2. Stillman Reception: Deidre will speak to Kelly about a "singing bowl" as a gift for the
Stillman's. The Vestry will host a reception on the 25th in recognition of the years of
worship and service from the Stillman's at St. Andrews. Monte MacConnell to order
cake. We will have finger food and salads. Jim Hose to quarterback.
Respectfully submitted, Linda Rachel

Shindig Update: Putting the "FUN" back in fundraising!
The Fundraising Committee, consisting of Jan Haury, Jim
Hose, Fran Karuzas, Linda Rachel, Jean Valence, and myself,
has been busy planning for St. Andrew's social event of the
year, Savor the Flavor-A Harvest Extravaganza. This event will
be held on Saturday, October 8 at the home of Linda and John Rachel. See the
related ad below for details. This important fundraising event will require the
participation of all parishioners to ensure its success. St. Andrew's operating
budget includes $11,500 expected income from Shindigs. Income from Shindigs
so far this year has totaled $2,075, so we will need to clear $9, 425 to meet this
budget goal.
You can support this event by attending, donating auction or raffle items,
underwriting expenses, or work preparing for the event. Last year's Danson
Under the Stars was a huge success thanks to the generosity of parishioners.
We may not have Ted Danson this year, but we will have a beautiful venue,
delicious food and wine, entertainment, and the best company you could wish
for. Please plan to attend Savor the Flavor-A Harvest Extravaganza and be
prepared to have fun while financially supporting the ministries of St.
Andrew's.
Savor the Flavor
A Harvest Extravaganza
Saturday, October 8
Attendees will be treated to a delightful harvest celebration at the home of
Linda and John Rachel on the banks of Oak Creek off Page Springs Road. The

dinner with wine pairings, a raffle and live auction.
Dress is casual elegant with comfortable footwear.
Shuttle service will be provided.
You are encouraged to invite guests to this major fundraiser of the year.
Donation: $100 per person
All proceeds support St. Andrew's ministries
Reservations will be accepted starting July 25

In Memoriam:
Melissa Catherine Milloy, 40, of Phoenix passed
away suddenly on Tuesday July 5. Melissa was
beloved by her many friends, family, and students.
Melissa was born in Cheverly, MD and grew up in
Budd Lake and Belle Mead, NJ. She attended
Montgomery High School and was a stand out cross
country runner. Melissa attended Virginia Tech,
where she originally majored in Organic Chemistry
before transferring to English. After a short stay in
Albuquerque to attend the University of New Mexico,
Melissa moved to Arizona in 1997 to pursue her
masters in English at Arizona State. Her studies there
focused on the influence of nature in our lives and
wilderness as a literary character. Melissa met her
husband, George Piotrowski of Flagstaff, AZ, while at
ASU in 2001. They were married in Sedona in 2005
and lived in Tempe, then later central Phoenix. Melissa
and George were expecting their first child, a son to be named Matthew James, this
December. Melissa taught English at Mesa Community College and started a private
tutoring company to help her students prepare for college. She loved all animals, nature,
and her family and friends very much. She is survived by her husband George, her father
Jim Milloy of Basking Ridge, NJ, mother and step-father Linda and Allan Sager of Tracys
Landing, MD, her grandmother Dorothy Carroll of Upper Marlboro, MD, her sister and
brother-in-law Kelly and Tim Gray of Medway, MA, and six wonderful nieces and
nephews. A memorial celebration of her life will take place at 11am Saturday July 16 at All
Care Mortuary Garden Chapel, 1541 E. Thomas Road, Phoenix, AZ. The family is
requesting that instead of flowers, please donate in her name to the animal charity of your
choice.
