Presidents Welcome
Welcome to Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club’s
Junior Activities (Nippers) program for 2015-2016
Noosa Main Beach and Peregian Beach
On behalf of the Management of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club, I would like to welcome our returning and
new junior members together with your families to the 2015 – 2016 Life Saving/Nipper season here at Noosa and
Peregian beaches.
Our Club has always held the junior program in the highest regard and is proud of our results in educating our junior
members in surf safety and awareness together with fostering future patrolling Life Savers and Surf Life Saving
competitors.
We are most fortunate this year to have yet again a highly motivated Junior Activities Committee led by Sam Smith,
who enjoys the full support of not only her committee but the Club’s Management Committee and membership.
This year will see our operations continue at two beaches, Noosa and Peregian, where we have invested in
renovations, new equipment and craft purchases to ensure that our junior members receive a balanced and varied
exposure to Surf Life Saving skills and some good old fun in the sun and surf.
I would encourage you all to make yourself known, to Sam and her committee, Anthony Fox, Damien Cogill, Tim
Morrow, Damien Smith, Steve Tindall and Craig Upson, so as you might engage yourself in the program. In that
regard there are a variety of roles in which we can all help and you will find the junior activities group a most
welcoming and fun lot at the morning set up, BBQ’s, Water Safety and wash down sessions.
So can I again welcome you all, and encourage you all to engage with Age Managers, Water Safety Supervisors,
Coaches, Team Managers and BBQ Co-coordinators, so that our Nippers and youth can have a rewarding, fun,
productive and safe 2015-2016 Surf, Nipper Season.
Yours in Life Saving
David James - President
WELCOME
Director of Junior Activities
On behalf of the Junior Activities Committee (JAC), I would like to welcome all returning and
new families to the 2015/2016 Nippers season. The newly elected committee have been hard at
work and we are very excited about the season ahead. With some great new initiatives and a
new coaching regime, we will be working to ensure all members have the best opportunities
available to them.
The Nippers program is designed to introduce children aged between 5-14 to surf lifesaving. It is
a fun outdoors activity that grows a child’s confidence, and teaches valuable surf awareness
skills. Our aim is to provide a safe, family-friendly and fun environment for our Nippers. I believe
that all kids living on the coast should be equiped with the best skills and knowledge for safe use
of our Australian beaches. Our Nippers today are the next generation of Surf Lifesavers.
The Nippers Sunday’s are a great way for all family members to get involved in Surf Lifesaving.
Each Sunday is a huge logistical undertaking and it is imperative for the smooth running and
safety of our children that ALL families contribute in some way. There are many ways you can
contribute from the set up and pack up of equipment and BBQ assistance, to enrolling in a program to become an Official, Age Manager or Water Safety Officer. If you would like more information on any of these opportunities, please email [email protected]. The Club
will happily provide you with support and assistance in completing these courses as well as the
flexibility to work around your available hours.
Six years ago when I enrolled my eldest son in the Nippers program, I did not expect one day I
would be the Director. I knew straight away that I wanted to assist in some way and enrolled in a
Water Safety program. The skills and fitness that I gained through completing my Surf Rescue
Certificate has been extremely rewarding and has introduced me to the Surf Club community.
I would like to formally acknowledge the Management Committee for their support. There are
many men and women who volunteer their time and work tirelessly in the background to make
sure the Noosa Nippers program continues well into the future.
Please take the time to read this booklet thoroughly as it is a wonderful source of information for
the 2015/16 season.
I would also like to thank all of you for your support of me as Director. I feel very privileged to
hold the position and look forward to the season ahead.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT AT NOOSA NIPPERS
BOTH PARENTS/GUARDIANS MUST BECOME MEMBERS OF THE CLUB AND
PROVIDE ASSISTANCE FOR CHILDREN TO PARTICIPATE IN THE
NIPPER PROGRAM
Tasks such as Age Group Managers and assistants, fundraising activities, carnival officials,
beach set up/pack down and BBQ duties are all vital for the program to run at its full potential.
Volunteers are also needed for specific activities, mid-week training, surf carnivals and Nipper
Sunday’s. It is of great importance that the committee has a depth of personnel to call on during
the Nipper season.
It is a club requirement when a Nipper competes at carnivals that a parent
assists with a role relevant to the event.
Officials
An official role is either judging, marshaling competitors, presenting medals, recording results or
starting races. This season a level 0 Officials course will be held at the NHSLSC and through out
the year level 1 courses are run at the Sunshine Coast Branch Head Office in Mooloolaba.
Please register your interest for attending a course with administration at
[email protected]
Water Safety
Water safety officers mainly spend their time in the water on Nipper Sundays and carnivals either
on rescue boards, swimming with tubes/fins or being markers and monitors for the wade and
swimming races. A Surf Rescue Certificate or Bronze Medallion is required to be a Water Safety
officer. Please email [email protected] or call in to the office to speak to Anna or
Greg to discuss and register your interest in one of our next courses.
Beach Setup Task Force
Responsible for the set up and pack down of equipment at carnivals and Nipper Sundays.
Depending on the amount of volunteers we have, you may be asked to help on a number of
occasions. If you wish to help please contact the Steve Tindal, Age Manager Coordinator.
It is a requirement of both the Club and Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) that ALL members
(including parent Associate Members) over the age of 18 hold a Blue Card (Police Check). As
parents, involved with Junior Activities, you are required to complete an application, or if you
already hold a valid Blue Card complete a confirm application which will be submitted to SLSQ
for processing.
The Blue Card Working with Children Check is confirmed by the Commission for Children and
Young People and Child Guardian. This process is confidential and assists the Club in
our duty of care for providing a safe environment for your children.
Application forms are available via download from the NHSLSC website (lifesaving library or how
to join Nippers page) www.noosasurfclub.com.au. Alternatively forms can be collected from
Club Administration during opening hours.
Two forms of original identification are required to be presented with delivery of this form.
AIMS OF NOOSA SLSC NIPPER ACTIVITIES
The aims of Noosa Nipper activities are to:

Promote and teach safe participation and enjoyment of Australian waterways through
education in all aspects of water safety, personal survival, aquatic competitions, lifesaving
and resuscitation.

Promote fun and enjoyment in the water and beach activities.

Encourage children to develop finely tuned water skills through education classes,
competitions and Surf Lifesaving activities.

Encourage long term involvement with the Surf Lifesaving movement.
Nipper Sundays are the foundation from which we build our basic surf and competition skills
along with awards and accreditations such as the Surf Rescue Certificate.
Each age group has an Age Manager with one or two assistants. The Age Manager is responsible for the education, training and organisation of the group. The coaches of water and beach
activities have overall control of the mid week training sessions.
The Noosa Junior Activities are run by the Junior Activities Committee (JAC) which meets on a
monthly basis to discuss future planning and current operations.

Junior Preliminary Skills Evaluation Process (U6-U14)
Updated – May 2012
SUNDAY NIPPERS AT NOOSA HEADS SLSC
Each Sunday begins with a short meeting on the beach at 7.45am at both Noosa Main Beach and
Peregian Beach in front of the club house (may vary depending on conditions). All children and parents/
guardians are required to attend these meetings to find out what is happening for the particular session
and to hear about what is happening in the Club as a whole entity.
Prior to the 7:45am briefing, parents MUST complete the sign on sheet to register their children for the
specific Sunday and check the parent help roster to see what role they have been assigned for the
session. Parents who have not been listed as being required for assistance MUST remain at the beach
for safety reasons (in accordance with SLSA Policy). Look for the sign on table just past the BBQ’s to sign
on.
Once signed on, the Nipper must place and secure their Nipper cap on their head and then assemble with
their age group & Manager (groups are clearly marked with flags). Everyone will proceed to their
designated areas for the commencement of the day’s program once the meeting is finished.
Any child, who arrives to sign on without a Parent/Guardian present, unfortunately will not
be able to participate in the morning’s activities.
No child should be left on the beach unsupervised by a Parent/Guardian.
Age Managers require assistance in water safety and teaching the children skills.
At least one parent is required to be present at all times MUST hold Blue Card (see information
about working with children check on pages 7&8). However, only water safety officers are able to
assist with water activities.
Once the parent/guardian has signed their child out the Nipper can then remove their cap.
For u6 & u7 age groups the finishing
time is approximately 9.15am.
For u8 - u14 age groups the finishing
time is approximately 10:15am.
NIPPER CLUB AND VICE CAPTAINS
Each year the Club chooses Nipper captains and vice captains from the ranks of the u14’s. We
encourage our young members to embrace leadership roles within the club. When selecting
Club and Vice Captains it is the club’s intention to further develop our young leaders.
The selection process is an application and interview conducted by members of the
Management Committee.

COACHES PROFILES
HEAD COACH -
DARREN MERCER
Darren began Nippers at the Thirroul Surf Lifesaving Club in NSW when he was 7
years old. He went on to compete at many Branch, State, National and International Championships. At the age of 17, Darren began his professional Ironman
Career, winning his 1st endurance race that same year. He continued to dominate
the Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain series for well over a decade. His specialty was Endurance racing, winning 5 Manly Gold races and 1 Coolangatta Gold in 1991. Darren
was also successful in winning the NSW State Ironman title 5 times and he is also a 02 time Australian Ironman Champion.
On top of these achievements Darren has represented and Captained the Australian Team
numerous times.
During his many years of involvement in Surf Lifesaving, Darren was awarded The Order of Australia Medal
(OAM) for his services to the movement in January 1992 and he has also been inducted into NSW Sporting
Hall of Champions.
Darren is a Level Two Surf Coach and began his coaching career by programing and coaching himself and
his brother along with the help of their father John on the South Coast of NSW throughout their long and
very successful careers. He was a Nipper Age Manager and Board Coach to many Mooloolaba Nippers,
who thrived and developed great training ethics and fantastic surf skills under his guidance.
Darren went on to become The Junior Development Officer and Senior Board Coach, winning the u15 point
score at the 2008 and 2009 Australian Titles. From these great achievements Darren was invited to become
the assistant coach of the Queensland Cyclones Team, where they won the Interstate Championships.
As Head Coach of Noosa, Darren is excited and enthusiastic about setting whole club training programs (u8
years to Masters) with the support of Noosa Heads newly appointed coaching staff.
BEACH COACH
-
OMAR BAKHACH
A Level 2 Beach Coach and Level 1 Sports Trainer, Noosa Heads SLSC Beach
Coach Omar Bakhach first obtained his surf bronze in 1977 at a notoriously wild
beach on the Victorian coastline called Gunnamatta Beach. He competed at local
and state competitions but his involvement in surf lifesaving eventually took a back
seat for surfing and spear fishing.
In the early 2000's, Omar became involved with Sunshine Beach SLSC where
whispers had got out about his experience in beach competition. He began coaching flags, sprints and relays to a squad of nippers from
Sunshine Beach, Noosa, Peregian and Coolum.
In 2010 Head Coach, Darren Mercer,, invited Omar to join him at Noosa. Omar
has coached
athlete development and high performance squads for SLSQ and provided speed and agility training to visiting surf sports competitors and sporting clubs.
Omar’s athletes have gained numerous gold, silver and bronze medals at local, state and national competition.
Omar’s knowledge of and experience in beach sports has been recognised through an invitation from SLSQ
to be a committee member on the 4 person State Beach Sports Panel.
After 5 great seasons at Noosa, in 2015/16 Omar hopes to mentor some new junior beach coaches to help
with the development of junior competitors and assist with building a succession plan from Junior ranks to
Senior ranks.
NIPPER COACH
-
Tom Britten
Tom is excited to take on his new role as Nipper Coach at NHSLSC, which will see
him take charge of the development of coaching programs to expand opportunities for
Noosa’s next wave of Junior athletes.
Tom’s sporting history includes representative rugby, swimming, boxing and kayaking.
He also has competition experience in surf sports, athletics, triathlons and mixed martial arts. His experience with sport started at 13 in kayaking and by the age of 18 he
had competed for Australia on three different occasions. Tom also ranked fourth in
the world for kayaking in the over 1000m k4 under 18 years. It was during this time
that he met and engaged with many international coaches and soaked up every
aspect of passion for sport.
His coaching experience began at 16 when he volunteered to help introduce kids with
disabilities to kayaking. Volunteering inspired Tom to start development coaching for anyone who needed
help. By 2010, he was coaching squads from his local club consisting of kids from 8 years old through to
Masters.
Now Tom is Sunny Coast resident ready to push Noosa Nipper to the top!
Tom’s mantra:
My passion and enjoyment for coaching does not come from knowing more or having people look up to
me, but to assist people with the same passion and enjoyment as those that helped me. During this time I
have found myself being able to communicate with young kids and influence their skills by implementing
physical goals and helping them achieve these with hard work, enjoyment and persistence.
This is the direction I pursue in my sessions to develop young athletes and also young people that are
able to succeed outside of sport.
Jordan Mercer
Mermaids Coach
Lachie Lansdown
Beginner Board Coach
Girls only sessions for female
competitors only will be run by the very
talented and inspirational Jordie Mercer
during mid-week training once Nippers
Sunday’s are up and running.
Sessions for U8 - U14 beginners will be
run by Lachie who is not only a patrolling
member of the NHSLSC, but a world
class board paddler & all round fun guy.

WHERE DOES NIPPERS TAKE YOU
A primary objective of the Junior Activities program is the introduction to the senior club
after the age of 14. From here members are asked to perform beach patrols utilising
skills learnt during their junior years. A Surf Rescue Certificate can be undertaken at age
13 in preparation for the years of lifesaving ahead.
The reward for those who continue on to the senior ranks is considerable. In return for a
members patrolling service, the Club offers a range of facilities and services such as
comprehensive coaching programs, gym access, a large array of life saving skills and
awards, and competition opportunities. Juniors initially enter into the Under 15 category
and will undergo the Bronze Medallion qualification, at 15 years of age.
SURF EDUCATION CERTIFICATES (AWARDS)
Each Nipper has a yearly Award to obtain prior to advancing to their next year level. They will learn
and demonstrate the required skills on Nipper Sundays. These awards must be obtained prior to
31st December each year.

COMPETITION (CARNIVALS)
Who can compete:
u8 - u14 age groups compete at carnivals. There are no competitions for u6 & u7 age groups.
Any nipper who has completed their competition level run-swim-run can compete, however he/
she must obtain his/her age award before competing at Branch or State.
Competition is quite possibly the most successful recruiting tool for the Surf Life Saving
Movement. The Surf Sports program offers a wide range of competition events, such as beach
based, surf and pool water events along with events such as R&R, march past and multi skill
events such as first aid and champion lifesaver.
There are events for all age and skill level,
culminating in the Junior Queensland Championships each year.
Where are carnivals held:
Carnivals are mainly held on the Sunshine Coast, with some travel a little further afield. Some
u11-14 carnivals occasionally compete on the Gold Coast.
How long do the carnivals go for:
u8 - u10 Carnivals are usually held over one day whereas the u11 - u14 carnivals can be held
over two days (Sat & Sun). Most carnivals marshal approx. 7.45am, with a club warm up being
held at 7am. Carnivals involve long hours so be prepared to be at the beach most of the day.
Early arrival is required to assist with Club tent set up
How to enter:
You can access carnival nomination forms via the Nippers Carnival page on the Noosa Surf Club
website. Alternatively you can ask your Age Manager for a copy on Nipper Sunday or collect
from the breezeway near the office, before the carnival closing date (normally about 2 weeks prior to the carnival). The costs to enter a carnival is covered by the club, as long as the JAC Team
Selection policy is adhered to. If the Nipper does not attend the carnival or pulls out after the
closing date the club reserves the right to recover the cost of the entry fee.
No Child will be entered into a carnival without parental assistants being advised on the
carnival nomination form.
What to Bring?
Each club has a tent set up on the beach that we provide for competitors. We ask parents to
bring their own umbrella and chair and sit nearby if space under cover is limited. Everyone will
require plenty of water and food to last the day, sunscreen, hat, club swimwear and warm clothes
if the weather/wind turns.

DEPARTMENT: J AC
SUBJECT: Team Selection Policy
AUTHORISED BY: Junior Activities Committee / Management Committee
ISSUE DATE: 27/07/2015
VERSION: 1
PAGES: 2
SCOPE
This policy applies to members of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club who compete in all age groups in Nipper
carnivals (ages U8-U15).
OBJECTIVE
The objective of the Noosa Heads SLSC Selection Policy is to select the strongest team or teams to represent Noosa
Heads SLSC in each age group (we encourage all Nippers to compete and represent NHSLSC).
POLICY
- The Relevant coaches, (JAC will be in consultation with Age Manager/s) are to select teams in accordance with the
Selection Policy Objective.
- Coaches/Age Managers will select teams primarily based on ability and performances at carnivals including but not
limited to;
- State Endurance Titles
- Match Races i.e. Paddle Offs/Run Offs
- Rainbow Carnival (U11-U14 only)
- Maroochydore Carnivals
- Club Championships (U11-U14 only) - Branch Titles

Other factors to be considered are availability, willingness to compete, commitment to training
(attendance & performance), illness/injury, past performances, consistency

Results at Carnivals and Club Championships will carry great weighting than results at Club Training
Days and Match Races.

Results will be recorded to the best of the recorder’s ability (recorder will be age manager for each age
group) and submitted to the office within 5 working days of each carnival. These results shall be used to
assist in the assessment of team selection.

Age Managers are encouraged to consult with the relevant coaches in deciding team selection.

At the start of the season when there have not been many carnivals, team selection will be based on the
previous season and/or pre-season training.

Due to the complexities of the Board Rescue event, teams should be presented by the Age Managers to the
respective coaches for approval. Board Rescue competitors are encouraged to train and compete in their
teams from early in the season to develop combinations.

There is no right of appeal/protest for team selection, except for the Branch & State Championships. Any
notice of appeal/protest for Branch & State teams must be lodged in writing to the JAC chairman/woman
within 5 working days of the team/s being announced.
TEAM SELECTION POLICY CONTINUED…

The JAC Executive shall appoint an impartial panel to assess each case.

Any individuals who voluntarily withdraws from the team after the first marshalling call for that event
may not participate in individual events for the remainder of the carnival. This presents a team member
withdrawing to conserve energy for their own individual event at the expense of their team members who
may have been waiting at the carnival to compete.

Substitutions in teams may only be made on the day of the carnival by Age Managers, in consultation with
the relevant coaches and the Team Manager. Any changes must be made in accordance with SLSA rules,
and should only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

If parents/caregivers wish to dispute/discuss a team selection they MUST NOT approach the Age Manager
or any parent. Parents should contact the Team Manager or JAC Chairman/woman.

It is inappropriate for parents to approach Age Managers or other competitors with complaints about team
selection or negative comments about any competitor’s performance. Such behavior will not be tolerated
by Noosa Heads SLSC. Equally poor sportsmanship and “sledging’ by competitors will not be condoned
and will result in exclusion from individual events and/or removal from the beach as a minimum. This is
in line with SLSQ’s Members Code of Conduct (found on page 24 of the Nipper Handbook).

HISTORY OF NOOSA HEADS SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB
The first step in the formation of the Noosa Heads SLSC occurred on the 1st April 1928 when the
Alexandria Club visited Tewantin and the Heads to give a display for local men. And so began the
“Cooroy Royal Life and Surf Club” with first committee: Bob Geraghty; George Sanby; Don Braddock
and Jock Daly.
A public meeting was held on 9th April 1928 at Cooroy and on the 30th April the name was changed to
Noosa Heads Royal Life and Surf Club. On 24th September Mr Vaughn was appointed Captain and
building a shed on Noosa Beach was first discussed that October.
December 2nd saw the first examination of active members conducted by Mr F Turner and on the 9th
December 13 members qualified for the Royal Life Saving Society still water and Surf Bronze, thus
qualifying to patrol the beach.
On the 25th February 1929 the first Annual General Meeting was held with approximately 20 members
in attendance and in October of the same year a Club House was placed on the beach.
In May 1931 the name was changed again to “Noosa Life Saving and Surf Club”.
Since then the club has continued to patrol the beach with the proud record of no lives lost on Noosa
Beach while Life Savers were on patrol.
Over the years there have been many rescue situations that involved a certain degree of risk; as a
result several of our members received Bravery Awards.
In the 2008/2009 season the club underwent a major refurbishment. We are now very proud to have a
clubhouse rated as one of the finest on the Sunshine Coast with “the best seat on the beach”.
In October 2014 the club took over patrol operations at Peregian Beach and took on the task of
running Sunday Nipper sessions at both Noosa Main Beach and Peregian Beach.
Our supporters’ club is run very successfully by a committee, and provide a great source of
finances for “active” needs to ensure we can continue to provide the best in public safety,
community involvement and leadership, youth development, beach management and surf sports.
