Message From the
CHAMBER
On behalf of the Board of the Branford Chamber
of Commerce, we are proud to provide this Town
Guide and Membership Directory as an informational piece that you will be able to use throughout
the year. The Chamber is steadfast in its mission to
work with our members, the town, and the greater
community to enhance the economic development
of Branford while helping to ensure it is a good
place to live and work. Our organization has been
an integral part of the community for more than 50
years and we remain committed to providing our
members with:
— Networking and promotional opportunities
— Government information that is essential to
business owners
— Ongoing opportunities for personal and
professional development
— Opportunities to enhance the community
While we move through periods of good and bad
economic times, the Chamber remains a fixture. At
heart, we are an organization that provides a service—which is opportunity. Our Board of Directors
is committed to innovation and creativity, and actively embraces new technology regularly; this has
resulted in the Branford Chamber being referred
to as one of the most progressive in Connecticut. In
keeping with that mandate, we will continue to test
new ideas and create innovative programs that are
designed to ultimately enhance the services to our
membership. This is our pledge to you. So in 2011 we
urge you all to join us in making the connection.
Sincerely.

strives to keep up with and take advantage of the best (and most cost
effective) technologies available. Members
have the opportunity to market via email to
a substantial list of business owners and residents in the area. With the help of additional
vehicles such as Facebook, members can
also get their message out to another type of
consumer. Through tireless research, Chamber President Ed Lazarus has identified the
software company that will power the new
chamber website.
When we think about new technologies
as they relate to marketing, we must understand that they are simply tools that help us
draw in potential customers. Websites are the
cyber front door of every organization and
are a critical element in how each business
positions itself. With this in mind, 2011 will
bring the launch of a new Branford Chamber

website that should provide an amazing array
of benefits to our members.
Imagine a Chamber website that allows you
to have your own information page where
you maintain contact control, where you can
enter a password and at any moment learn
how many people are reaching your website
through the Chamber, and that provides you
the opportunity to either create your own discount or informational coupons to post on the
Chamber’s website or to sell your own product from the Chamber’s online store. Having
a special event? No problem. Just forward the
event to the Chamber and your event will automatically be placed on the member’s calendar of events! These are but a few highlights
of what our new site will bring members.
Consumers, tourists, and business owners
who use it will find this is a “go to” place for
valuable information. So what are you waiting for? Take a look: www.branfordct.com.

Welcome
to Branford, CT
Live…
Work…
Play…
Branford is a vital community
with a strong economic base, low
taxes, and excellent schools and
municipal services. One of the
greatest assets of our town is the
spirit of volunteerism and civic
involvement –- citizens working
together to make Branford an
active and caring community in
which to live.
The economic strength of
Branford is reflected in the diversity of companies found
here. This includes an established manufacturing presence,
a growing biotech community,
medical research firms, and innumerable small, independent
retail and service businesses.
With 20 miles of coastline on
Long Island Sound and more
than 4,000 acres of protected
open and/or undeveloped space,
Branford is home to a great variety of scenery and habitats.
There are endless opportunities
to enjoy the outdoors, from hiking and cycling to kayaking the
Thimble Islands.

I
f the residents of Branford aren’t yet the shoreline’s
healthiest, it’s not for lack of opportunity. With specific health and patient care facilities like American Red
Cross of South Central Connecticut, VNA Community
Healthcare, and Harbor Health Services, Inc., the area is
fortunate to have plenty of resources in its backyard. Add
to these the new Soundview YMCA and other fitness facilities across town and getting and staying in shape is a
snap. Later, when muscles are fatigued and need a break,
locals and visitors can turn to one of the many area spas
for a massage or other wellness services!
Along with bountiful local offerings, the Chamber
hosts regular Women in Business events that often focus
on health. Attendees will enjoy learning about what options are available to enhance their appearance and better
their mental health, while enjoying a delicious lunch and
mingling with area business people.
Contact the Chamber for details on the next Women in
Business event. Hope to see you there!

usiness might come first, but the Branford Chamber (BCC) is just as dedicated to providing fun for
its members and the community! Beyond regular
events like the popular Business After Hours, the
Branford community is encouraged to attend the many social events the Chamber offers throughout the year. And
likewise, the Branford Chamber loves to take part in what
the community has to offer.
In the fall, the community is invited to a dinner. With
past themes that have varied from dinner dance to dinner
theater, the event is always a crowd pleaser. And at the holidays, the BCC joins the Branford Recreation Department
by gathering members to march in the annual Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting.
As summer draws near, don’t forget to make plans to attend the Annual Branford Festival on Father’s Day weekend. During the festival, the Chamber hosts the Craft &
Community Expo, which draws thousands to the Green
each year. When July hits, so do the cymbals as Blue Plate
Radio’s Branford Jazz on the Green gets going each Thursday evening on the Branford Green. When summer is in
full swing, it’s time to call the Chamber for tickets to the
annual Lobster Clambake at the
Owenego Inn. Steamers, lobsters,

ranford, Connecticut has long
been recognized for its welcoming downtown center and the
quality of stores and restaurants that are
represented. The picturesque New England streets around the Green are lined
with boutiques and great places to stop for a
bite. However, great dining, shopping, and
beautification opportunities are sprinkled
generously throughout the entire town.
Highly rated, unique restaurants add a
level of quality and diversity to the menu
here that few small towns can rival. Wellknown for its strong culinary traditions
and eclectic sampling of flavors, Branford
is always eager to add to its restaurant community. Each of Branford’s unique neighborhoods has a gem that it can be proud
of. Merchants and restaurant owners take
great pride in their businesses and the rapport they have with customers. As a result,
Branford has cultivated a selection of shops
and dining establishments that has residents of other towns flocking to the town,
and perhaps even envying its residents.
Well-known destination shops for tourists and local shoppers abound in Branford,
and mom-and-pop-style businesses of all
kinds are at the core of the retail and restaurant community, while some of the best
local beauty and style talent can be found in
the various hair and nail salons throughout
the town of Branford.
Many shop owners have grown up in
Branford and have instilled not only their
knowledge of their products to their staff,
but also what it means to be a part of a
small community –- every festival, group
run, and quick coffee stop could yield a
potential customer.

ranford is lucky enough to have a plethora of
community and civic organizations. From the
Community Dining Room and Branford Food
Council that keeps residents fed to SARAH, Inc, which
assists disabled people, the quality of life in Branford is
second to none.
While many of these organizations are staffed with volunteers, others are a blend of paid and volunteer personnel. Regardless of the structure of organization they serve,
these individuals are dedicated to providing resources and
a better place to live for others. In many of these organizations, the focus is on education, health, or finding alternatives to financial hardships. These dedicated groups are
paving the way for Branford to help its residents to grow
and flourish, regardless of their situation.

nonprofit groups or community organizations and how you
can get involved.

good number of our
members provide
professional and
business services. From accountants to office equipment suppliers and all in between, they
provide a great resource for
the entire membership and the
community. Should you have a
need for a computer consultant,
Internet developer, attorney,
employment agency, bank, financial planner, or consultant,
be sure to look at our member
directory for contact information. Many in this group of service providers belong to
a professional organization and require a license that
binds them to strict codes of ethics.
Business and financial service providers have generously provided their expertise to many Chamber
professional development programs and events. You
will find many of these providers participating in
the Chamber seminar series. Business consultants,
insurance consultants, accountants, and employment
agency personnel have spoken at or served on a panel
during our leadership program conferences. The leadership program assists businesses in developing their
personnel for the next step in management and the
personal development of the individual. This program
is presented approximately every two years. Call the
Chamber to inquire when the next program begins.
A portion of our website at www.branfordct.com is
dedicated to the Small Business Resource Center. Here,
you will find articles written by members for members,
containing advice and insight that caters to the needs of
businesses. There have been articles written by an attorney on succession planning, by an insurance consultant
explaining the new world of medical insurance and the
HSA, by an advertising director on avoiding advertising mistakes, and by employment agencies and consultants on hiring and employee development, as well as
articles on choosing a bank and choosing an accountant
and many more. Articles are added frequently. Go to
our website for the contents of these and other articles
designed to help grow your business.

ranford is a prime location both to live and to do
business, according to two local experts on the
subject: Craig Fuchs, a commercial real estate
broker with H. Pearce Company, and Susan Mullane, a
residential agent with Weichert Company.
The realtors agree that Branford is a dynamic place to
buy and sell real estate. On the residential side, Branford
benefits from having one of the longest shorelines of any
town in the state.
“There are plenty of sandy beaches for recreation and
family fun,” Mullane said. “Branford is fortunate to have
plenty of inlets and harbors that are conducive to boating
and other types of recreation. This helps attract a diverse
group of people to live in the town, which in turn helps
make for a vibrant cultural atmosphere.”
According to Fuchs, the town’s diverse portfolio of
businesses and full complement of support services make
it attractive to commercial interests.
“Branford has a good cross mix of industries including
technical, medical, retail and computer-based businesses,”
he said. “The different areas of town are complementary
to each other, with the different types of businesses situated appropriately.”
These businesses are served by a skilled work force. In
addition, Branford benefits from a good public transportation system that includes a bus line and the Shoreline
East train service, both of which allow ease of movement of skilled workers from outside Branford.
The town also benefits from a consistent
Grand List of taxes and a triple AAA bond rating, Fuchs said. This makes Branford very attractive to businesses that need a location.
“Although Branford has plenty of businesses, they
tend to be ‘tucked away’ as not to disturb the otherwise
residential aspects of the town’s character,” Mullane said,
adding that it is important that the majority of the town
is served by public sewer and water, and by natural gas
lines and high speed cable communications services.
“Residential customers love not having to worry
about septic and well issues,” Mullane said. “Businesses find that these services make Branford a good
choice to locate here because they have certain requirements for the physical plant of their operations.”
Both agree that Branford’s sense of community,
small town New England charm, diverse real estate
price ranges, and beautiful Main Street area make the
town a great place to live and to do business.

and buried treasure on Connecticut’s
Shoreline, and one pirate’s name is whispered again and again: Did Captain William Kidd hide his treasure here?
It is possible. Kidd was in Connecticut in
the late 177thh Century, not long before he was
tried and hanged for piracy in 1701. But did
Kidd bury his pirate’s booty somewhere on
the Thimble Islands, as the story goes?
Captain Bob Milne, owner of Thimble
Islands Cruise, says probably not.
Milne has been captaining his cruise
ship around the Thimble Islands in Stony
Creek for 24 years. He says Kidd wasn’t in
Connecticut to pillage, rather he was trying
to clear his name.
After all, Kidd didn’t set out to become
a pirate. He was a merchant with a family in New York city. Kidd was hired as a
privateer and, through a series of events,
stumbled his way into piracy.
“He was actually a very respectable
Scotsman,” Milne says. “Really, he only
ever attacked one ship.”
“Most important for him was to clear his
name, and he thought he had worked out
a deal and [the authorities] said, ‘Just come
up to Boston and we’ll clear your name…’
but they shackled him and threw him in
jail and brought him back to England and
tried him and hanged him by the neck.”
On his way to Boston, however, Kidd
stopped in the Thimble Islands, which
Milne says “would have been a good hiding

But what about that pirate’s plunder?
“I hate to burst any bubbles, but it’s a long
shot,” Milne says, although he adds that it’s
likely Kidd may have left behind some of
his spoils in Long Island.
“He was friends with the Gardener
family and he stopped off [on Gardener’s
and, Long Island] and told them what

he was up to,” Milne says. “He left
there, said he had business to do and would
be back for it. Who knows what the value
of that was?”
It’s Milne’s guess that the Gardener chest
contained mere trinkets, or an occasional
gold coin, however.
Jane Bouley, Branford town historian
and vice president of the Branford Historical Society, says that Kidd would not have
been a rich man before his rendezvous
with the hangman’s noose.
“One reason the stories came into being
is that when he was captured, he had no
money, so he must have hid the treasure,”
Bouley says. “It was expensive to own
boats, have crew.”
And even if he did have gold to bury,
Milne says the Thimble Islands would
have been an unlikely hiding place.
“As far as massive amounts of gold or

to bury treasure on a Thim-ble Island anyway because
they’re granite,” Milne says.

High Island has been co-owned by The
Buccaneer Club for more than a century. “At
one time, all the cottages were painted black
and they flew pirate flags,” Bouley says. “So
the tradition of the legend continues.”

Were There
Throughout history, the citizens of Branford have contributed to
every aspect of the nation’s growth.
The earliest inhabitants of the area, then called “Totoket” or Land
of the Tidal River, were, of course, Native Americans. Part of Middletown’s larger Mattabeseck tribe, the Totokets were “discovered” by
Dutch explorer Adriaen Block in the early 1600s.
After the area was settled by the English in 1644, the town’s name
became Branford—presumably after Brentford, England, Branford’s
official sister city. Life for early settlers was centered primarily on the
town green, where the church was located. And while farming was
always a mainstay of local life, Branford’s deep harbor made it an accessible port, and by the 18th century growth was steady. When the
railroad came in 1852, big industry came with it, including Norcross
Brothers Granite Quarry, which would supply the granite used on the
Statue of Liberty.
European immigration continued, with the Irish in 1854, the
Scandinavian and British quarry workers in the 1880s, and the
Eastern Europeans, Germans, Italians, and others in the 1890s. But
perhaps the period of greatest transition was the turn of the 20th
century, when the town became a summer resort area. On a typical

BRANFORD OPEN SPACE

T
■ By Ed Lazarus
he Branford Land Trust is a
non-profit organization founded
in 1967. Its mission is to preserve
open space in Branford and to promote
our community’s appreciation of Branford’s diverse natural features.
Over these 43 years, the Land Trust
has acquired approximately 850 acres of
priceless open space in Branford, in addition to holding conservation easements on
another 340 acres.
More than 1,000 households and businesses support the Land Trust’s mission
through membership. Many more enjoy
our trails; join us for guided walks, lectures, or children’s programs; and visit our
award-winning website.
We protect diverse natural environments that include tidal salt marshes, wetlands, upland forests and meadows, and
even a few tiny islands in Long Island
Sound. The many areas that are not too
fragile for pedestrian access are available
for walking, bird watching, cross-country skiing, or just enjoying a few quiet
moments.
Sound property management practices
are critical to the protection and maintenance of land that we hold in trust for the
public good. We must monitor the physical status of Trust parcels to insure that the
purposes of the donor are being honored.
We must also monitor to ensure that property rights are not being violated by unauthorized users. We have a moral obligation
to maintain Trust property in a natural
state and prevent degradation, so that it
will be available for our children’s children
in an unspoiled state. Please join with us to
make this happen!

The Connecticut Economic Digest, a Connecticut Department

of Labor publication, describes Branford as “a vital community

with a strong economic base, low taxes, and excellent schools and
municipal services. The town is rather unique among the shoreline towns east of New Haven in that it has encouraged substantial development in well-defined districts.”
With a robust local economy and a diverse business community
of bioscience, manufacturing, healthcare and service industries,
and retail, Branford businesses include: Alcoa Howmet, a leading manufacturer in the aerospace industry; CAS Medical, among
Connecticut Technology Council’s “Top 40” fastest growing technology companies; and soundRunner, recognized nationally as a
retail leader for exercise and active lifestyle products.
These companies recognize that Branford offers what every company wants: full municipal services (e.g., water, sewer),

NONPROFITS IN BRANFORD:
Healthy Hearts for a Healthy Community
How nonprofits can help your
business:
■ By Emily Gangi, Harbor Health Services
S
horeline nonprofits provide a safety net for our community’s most vulnerable residents. That safety net includes
basic needs like food, shelter, and clothing; it also includes
healthcare, childcare, education, training, career counseling, and
recreation.
It is well known that shoreline nonprofits make Branford and
its surrounding towns a healthier and happier place to live and
work. What you may not know is that Branford’s nonprofits and
their employees are hugely active in their communities, volunteering and giving back just as much as, if not more than, their
for-profit counterparts. What you also may not realize is that
Branford Chamber nonprofits include some of the shoreline’s
largest employers; VNA Community Healthcare employs more
than 550, the SARAH family of organizations employs more
than 300, and Harbor Health Services employs more than 100.
Our Shoreline nonprofits are an essential part of our community
and there are numerous ways to support them.
To learn more, visit the Community & Civic Organizations section
on page 34.

any Branford residents, even those
who have lived here for years, confuse the town’s West Main, East
Main, North Main, South Main, and Main Streets!
But the “Main Street Conundrum” is just part
of Branford’s charm. (Some might say Branford
makes it easy to get in, but hard to get out, because
we never want you to leave!)
Geographically, the streets make sense. But it’s
not always easy to find the correct Main Street,
even with GPS. Enterprising drivers can make
an educated guess by looking at a map and dividing Route 1 into thirds. It also helps to know
that North Main Street is just north of main
Main Street, and that South Main Street is just
south of Main Street. All clear, right?
In any event, even a newcomer is likely to
eventually hit all the Mains if he wants to explore what Branford has to offer. Starting at
the city’s westernmost end, a trolley lumbers
toward Shore Beach. The Shore Line Trolley Museum was incorporated in 1945 and is
home to nearly 100 vintage vehicles, artifacts,
and trolleys. The trolley once provided service
from downtown New Haven, through East
Haven, and into Branford (it began running
on July 31, 1900). The line was extended to
Pine Orchard and Stony Creek, but was discontinued in 1947. A trolley now takes passengers from East Haven into Branford’s Short
Beach, and offers a glimpse of life before the
automobile ruled the road.
The town Green is one of Branford’s biggest
draws, and is often bustling with people coming and going from the many stores, restaurants,
and ice cream shops. The Green hosts activities
all year, from concerts to festivals to men and
women playing Frisbee with their dogs.
In the town’s east end, Stony Creek is known
for its Thimble Islands. This quaint area includes a small beach, a few shops and spots to
grab a bite, and the docks where tour boats are
boarded. Reserve a spot on a tour to hear about
the area’s ecology and history, including the legend of Captain Kidd. Just before spring arrives,
seal watches are available as well!
So, from west to east or east to west, explore
all that Branford has to offer—and don’t worry
about which Main Street you’re on!
At the town’s west end,
beyond Route 1’s most commercial segment, is Lake
Saltonstall, several farms, and
a network of trails maintained
by the Branford Land Trust.
Indian Neck
Home to both John B. Sliney Memorial Park and Foote
Park, Indian Neck has been
an attraction for tourists since
the mid-20th century.
Stony Creek
This quaint, harbor neighborhood is home to the Stony
Creek Puppet House and is
the launch point for Thimble
Island cruises, a quarry, and
the Stony Creek-Thimble Islands Historic District.
Short Beach
This two-mile-long beach
community is located in
the Branford’s west end, is
bordered by East Haven to
the west, and includes several small islands including
Kelsey’s Island.
Hotchkiss Grove
Home to a small beach,
Hotchkiss Grove is a small
community located between
Indian Neck and Pine Orchard that is best known
for Hotchkiss Grove Day, a

held every August.

The Chamber is proud to be a part of a community
that is proud of its heritage. We are proud not only of
our members who stand behind the growth of our
community, but also who offer the following monthly events: Networking, Young Professionals Events,
Women in Business Seminars, New Members Receptions, SCORE Business Counseling Sessions, Business
After Hours Events, and Multi-Chamber Events.
The Chamber gets the word out to the Branford
Community and builds personal business relationships
with educational seminars, legislative breakfasts, and a
planning conference. Visitors can stroll through town
and enjoy Branford’s unique shops and restaurants.
And the town comes alive with community holiday
celebrations with the annual Tree Lighting and Parade on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
Make Branford your ideal destination. Spring travelers can take pleasure in biking, hiking, nature study,
fishing, and outdoor relaxation. Take a stroll on the
green, stop in for fine dining, or go shopping in the
town’s charming stores. Attend a Women in Business
seminar, the State of Town Breakfast, and the Shreda-thon document shredding party held at the Branford Chamber of Commerce.
The Branford Festival is held annually in June on
Father’s Day weekend. This event brings together
businesses, family, and friends with music, a road race,
crafters, vendors, and food all weekend. Come join
in on the fun with the Lobster Clambake and Fireworks at Branford Point or take a boat ride around
the Thimble Islands.
Branford is particularly enchanting during the
holiday season, when the town’s finest traditions come
alive for October’s Cabaret dance, and November’s
Annual Holiday Parade. Visitors can stroll through
Branford’s unique shops and restaurants, and enjoy
the local happenings, such as Family Day on the Town
Green or Touch-a-Truck at Branford High School.
The Chamber also gets the word out to the Branford
community to attend or take advantage of the following events: Shred-a-thon, Cabaret, Candidates Forum,
Annual Dinner, and the Holiday Parade.

Is it radical to ask that your life savings get some
attention? Hardly. That’s why we’re built to have one
financial advisor in each office. Someone who’ll focus
on you. And your nest egg. Join the nearly 7 million
investors who know. Face time and think time
make sense. www.edwardjones.com
