Story from the ground
The 2,200 AIDS patients who we treat in Zimbabwe are extremely important to our
charity and are our “core business”.
However, it is worth describing an additional event, brought about by Dr. Carlo
Spagnolli’s unwavering willingness to help the people in need. It is the “Neurosurgical
approach for hydrocephalus”.
Hydrocephalus, also known as "water in the brain," is a medical condition in which
there is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the cavities of the brain. This may cause
increased intracranial pressure inside the skull and progressive enlargement of the head,
convulsion, and mental disability. Hydrocephalus can also cause death.
Dr. Carlo was informed about the fact that a neurosurgeon from Rovereto, his native city,
Dr. Conti, had recently been training some colleagues in Ethiopia, all “general surgeons”,
on how to treat this medical condition through a simple and inexpensive new technique.
Dr. Carlo thought “why not in Zimbabwe?” and started the process to make it true.
He had to find the financial support, to gather the doctors willing to be trained, get the
required permissions to hold the course and allow Dr. Conti to operate in Zimbabwe. Then
the babies to be operated had to be found and helped to travel to the L.Guidotti Hospital.
Eleven general surgeons and three nurses received training and 11 babies were
successfully operated, to their mothers’ joy.
This is a “sustainable” project, i.e. to teach local people to do what they need, providing
technical assistance and information. Now the local doctors know where to purchase the
shunts and catheters, at a cost of €37.00, and know the technique, which they will teach to
other colleagues.
A tiring project, fully successful.
