The survey was emailed to 889 chapter presidents
asking them to provide feedback and also to forward
the survey to all members of their chapter. After five
weeks the survey received 2,366 unique views and
1,919 responses. This strikes me as a fantastic return.

Trevor Janz, EAA’s Manager of Chapters and
Eagle Flights, was our guest speaker at the
February meeting. Trevor provided a great
presentation where he presented the results of
a recent Chapter Survey. This was followed
by a discussion of ways to retain and recruit
new members.

Sharing “camaraderie” and “knowledge & information” with like-minded people was a big reason
for joining an EAA chapter. “Meetings” ranked
highest in terms of importance to chapter membership, though high responses to “social events” and
“Young Eagles/Eagle Flights” suggests members
value meetings with meaning, ones where they come
together to achieve something
43% of respondents have been a chapter member for
more than 10 years. This aligns with the two biggest
issues chapters reported in a 2006 survey: aging
membership and recruitment.
When asked to use one word to describe what chapter membership means to them, “camaraderie,” “friendship” and “support” were
among the highest repeated responses. This suggests members value meetings with meaning, ones where they come together to
achieve something.
Trevor made several suggestions for retaining current members:
 Always have a greeter at the door to welcome current and new members.
 Utilize the new Chapter Video Magazine
 Plan interesting and fun events – Fly Outs, Fly Ins, Cookouts
 Develop a sense of community and camaraderie
 Do a member survey and act on the responses (take feedback)
While we have a good core group of members, it is always important to pay attention to recruiting new chapter members. Trevor
suggested the following:
 Eagle Flights Program - for Adults
 Chapter Brochures to hand out
 Chapter Business Cards with location/map
 Print Post Cards – The EAA can supply snail mail addresses for all EAA national members within a certain mile radius of your
chapter.
 Dan Majka, EAA HQ Board Member and past Chapter president said he recruited over 20 new members in a year, by simply
wearing EAA and/or aviation clothing and striking up conversations.
 Speak at community organizations – Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, Lion’s and give an overview of what EAA is and what
your chapter offers the community. Also, educate them on GA
 Adopt a Highway (Sign on freeway 24/7 365)
Other Ideas
 Work with other chapters in the area (if available) and join together to grow. You are not competing, by working together you
reach more people and can accomplish more.
 Several Chapters have teamed up and have done a pancake breakfast and split the profits.
 By joining forces with other chapters you can host larger Young Eagle Rallies and fundraisers.
 Utilize local media prior to and after your event.
 Social Media (Facebook) and website.
 Young Eagles Program (with a focus on teenagers)
 Talk with High School and Technical College Shop teachers and recruit students to learn more by helping in your build project.
 RC Aircraft and working with the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA). 2,000 Chapters.
 Plastic Model Building (RC and Model Building Nights)
 Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Aviati
Project Updates:
Trace Blakely’s RV7:
Trace continues to make progress on his RV7. He is in the final assembly stage of the Main Fuselage. All the pieces
are fitted, deburred, and dimpled. Next thing is to start riveting.
Also from Trace, he and his wife Cindy took a ride in their Comanche on Tuesday the 18th to look at Lake Michigan frozen over.
Here is a picture of the ice off Sheboygan. After looking at the ice, they stopped at Manitowoc for a nice lunch at the Airport Diner.
Sounds like a nice trip.
Dick Finn’s COZY Mark IV:
Not a lot of progress in the last two months. We were on vacation over Christmas in Florida and followed that up with a
Panama Canal Cruise. Right after getting back I took a bad fall on some ice and messed up my back. Things are pretty
well healed now and I’ve started work again.
I placed the order for fresh supplies (my epoxy is over 15 years old). I also built a new work table. I left the old one in
the basement in Chicago when we moved here. It was way too big and heavy to move. I had built it as a torsion box
using 2x4’s and 3/4” particle board. The old table was 4’ by 12’. That size worked well for the initial construction but I
can now get by with a smaller table for the remainder of the work. I built this one as a torsion box too but used 1x3’s
and 1/2” particle board. I capped it with a half sheet of 1/8” Masonite that can be ripped off and replaced as needed.
This table is 4’x4’.
New 4’x4’ work table. I built it 36” high then decided
to add casters to make it easy to move around. If the
added height makes it too hard to work with I’ll shorten
the legs a bit.

1x3’s to make it flat and rigid. Perfect for working on a
plane,
I’m continuing my work on fitting the landing gear. The two studs that hold it on have to be hammered in as there is a
slight mis-alignment in the mounting holes. I’m making small adjustments so the studs will slide in and out smoothly.

The landing gear studs are shown above. One slides in
smoothly but the second is way to snug. I’ve been working on the rear bulkhead bushing to make things slide in
and out smoothly.
The fuselage is upside down now. I’ll flip it on its side
nonce the main gear is working OK. I can then adjust
the torque tubes—they’re also a bit tight.

Arrowhead Stadium Flyover:
As you know the budget cuts have eliminated the military flyovers at large events. Well, there's a group of guys in Kansas City who
do some formation flying in their own planes and decided they'd volunteer to pick up the slack. They invited a couple of other groups
to join them and before they knew it they had 48 guys with their homemade RC airplanes signing up to join in.
If they had more time, they probably would have gotten an even larger group as people kept joining and a 49th was added near the
event. One additional feature of the flyover was the use of pink smoke for cancer awareness. The folks from the Guinness Book were
there and are expected to confirm it as the largest formation flight ever. And to top it off the crowd later set the record for the loudest
gathering at a football game.
