Beaufort
Beaufort has consistently been a favorite vacation
spot for residents and non-residents from around the
Eastern US. Known as a prominent fishing village
for many years, Beaufort has also been known as a
former pirate town after “Black Beard” used Beaufort
as a place to moor his boat while on his voyages.
The streets are lined with trees and historic homes
dating back to the 1700s.
Situated in the heart of the town’s historic district, the
two-acre Beaufort “Historic Site” encompasses six
authentically restored buildings, including the Mattie
King Davis Art Gallery, as well as the Old Burying
Grounds. The historic site serves as a testament
to the Beaufort Historical Association’s dedication
to the continued research and documentation of
the peoples, customs, lifestyles, and artifacts of
Beaufort’s past, and its efforts to preserve the town’s
historic identity in the future.
Located just 75 miles from the Outer Banks via ferry,
150 miles from Raleigh/Durham, and just 40 miles
from New Bern, Beaufort is easily accessible via
Highway 70 east and highway 101. The Beaufort
drawbridge will be replaced with a new high span
bridge and will be removed upon completion of the
new bridge. This will give the Beaufort Inn a clear
view to the North and South.
With a population of 68,434 full time residents
Carteret County is lively all year around. In the
summer time the population significantly increases
with visitors and vacation home owners. With the
81 miles of sandy beaches, excellent diving, bird
watching, boating, and fishing there is always
something to do!
