The Marco Island Yacht Club hosted its annual
“Art-Sea” Art Show in late March. The weekend-long
event showcased the non-maritime talents of the club
members, all with a Polynesian theme. MIYC held an
artists’ reception and a luau in conjunction with the show.

Nearly 50 members of the Calusa
Garden Club met for their annual
spring luncheon in April. Many of
the women wore "crazy hats" in
tribute to the luncheon's theme,
Afternoon English Tea, and a contest was held to determine who
wore the craziest hat of all. New
officers were installed at the annual event, which was held at the
Island Country Club.

“Talk Derby to Me,” the
annual fundraiser for the
Upon a Star Foundation,
was held in May at the
Marco Island Brewery, with
dozens of ladies attending
in extravagant hats.
Everybody had their bets
down when, just after the
Kentucky Derby started,
the iconic horse race that
“Talk Derby” is based
around froze on the big
screens surrounding the
party, due to a malfunction
of DirecTV. MIB owner
Frank LaCava donated
the restaurant’s
proceeds to the cause,
and the event raised
$30,000, said Upon a
Star co-founder
Howard Jordan.

Marco has taste, Marco eateries
have tasty treats, and if your
taste in entertainment runs to
sampling a smorgasbord of
specialties, Taste of Marco was
for you. The Annual Taste of
Marco is the island’s signature
food-tasting event, which was
held in April at the Esplanade.
Benefiting the Greater Marco
Family YMCA, the 22nd annual
event gave restaurants the
chance to reach new customers
and lets the public try some of
those restaurants’ signature
dishes, all for a $5 admission
fee and a few dollars in food
tickets.

The Marco Chapter of the Daughters of the
American Revolution (DAR) chose a perfect
historic day to honor two citizens who
continue to make Marco Island proud. It was
on April 19, 1775, that the first battles of the
American Revolutionary War were fought at
Lexington and Concord, Mass.! The recipient
of the DAR Student Scholarship, Camille
Richie, received her award while proud
parents Nancy and Michael looked on. The
recipient of the DAR Community Service
Award, Keith Dameron, received his award
while wife Barbara beamed. DAR Regent
Barbara Messere
was especially
proud to
announce that
Dameron’s
contributions to
our community
were so vast that
when submitted
to the state
DA review,
they won
second place.

Bald eagle enthusiasts put on a
show that was “for the birds” at Nest
Fest, held at Bistro Soleil in April.
In an evening of humor and
seriousness, 145 friends of Marco
Island’s Tract K eagle sanctuary
paraded feathered frocks for a grand
prize. Their efforts were rewarded as
a delighted audience hooted for their
favorites. Money raised will help
support a lease paid by the Marco
Eagle Sanctuary Foundation to keep
Tract K pristine for eagles.
The organization needs $30,000
annually to support the property.
